Renowned as the first place to hear the essential sounds of the year ahead, Live At Leeds returns in 2020 with an impressive line-up combining some of the most exciting names in modern music and the hottest breakthrough bands on the UK music scene. Previous artists that have appeared at Live at Leeds in the early stages of their careers and gone on to huge achievements include Brits Choice Winner Sam Fender (now headlining arenas and released A number 1 album ‘Hypersonic Missiles’), Pop Sensation Sam Smith, worldwide festival headliners The 1975, online star Freya Ridings, Glastonbury headliner Stormzy, and Ed Sheeran, who recently returned to Leeds for the biggest headline shows in the city since 2006 at Roundhay Park.

A favourite with the Live at Leeds crowd, their set is bound to be an unmissable spectacle and a highlight of the day.

Following of the most hyped debut albums of the last few years Pale Waves will return to Live at Leeds as triumphant headliners. The label-mates and tour-mates of The 1975 have been making a name for themselves as one of the most exciting alternative bands of recent years. Their debut album ‘My Mind Makes Noises’ was full of hits, including “Television Romance’ and ‘There’s a Honey’ and Live at Leeds will follow a host of sold out UK tours, an iconic Glastonbury performance in 2019 and tours with artists like Halsey and Muse.

Easy Life are arguably THE breakout artist of 2019, setting festival stages across the country alight throughout the summer with their mishmash of jazz, hip-hop, funk and punk that sounds like nothing done before . The Leicester 5-piece are being added to Live at Leeds following their recent sell-out show at Leeds University and have a much-anticipated EP Junk Food dropping in 2020. Also leading the charge of new names, making his Live at Leeds debut is Ezra Furman. Bringing his unique brand of indie rock from across the pond, this cult artist gained a mainstream following composing the soundtrack to the hit Netflix series ‘Sex Education’ in 2019. He will appear at the festival in support of his fourth solo studio album ‘Twelve Nudes’ which was released in August 2019 on Bella Union.

Also on the line-up are Beck-inspired Bad Sounds, breakthrough alternative artist Marika Hackman, electronic-pop sensation Self Esteem, Charlatans frontman and indie legend Tim Burgess and UK psych-rock band Temples.

Live at Leeds is well known for giving new artists their first show in the city before they go on to conquer the world and 2020 welcomes a new crop of exciting artists arriving in Leeds for shows early in their careers. These include Aussie fuzz-pop duo Hockey Dad, Norwegian punk art rockers Pom Poko, indie-pop bands FEET and Kawala, Newcastle rockers The Pale White, and alt-synth act W. H. Lung.

Over 55 acts are confirmed on this first announcement, including singer-songwriter James Smith, Glaswegian Art-rockers Walt Disco, and a host of exciting new artists including Jazz-soul producer and Dance to the Radio signee Leo Cosmos, alt rockers Leodis and haunting dream-pop band Artio.

LIVE REVIEW: LØE supported by thysen & The Common View – The Lantern, Halifax – 16th November 2019

I set off to get to The Lantern in what might be described in an excited state, LØE’s single ‘People Have The Power’ (to be released on 8th December) had really piqued my interest, and I was really interested in seeing them live. But before LØE there were two support bands to whet our musical appetites. Let’s get into this.

Now The Common View are one of those indie/indie rock bands. You may or may not know that I don’t like indie that much, there are some bands that are the exception but in general a band playing indie has to do something really good to get my attention. The Common View right from the get go did that.

They did this in two ways – firstly their songs have great tunes and I love a great tune, and secondly they really know their stuff musically. A special shout out here to their bass player who plays a six-string bass, and listening and watching closely they really use that to great effect. I was so taken with the band that I just got into what they were playing. Sure it’s that ‘classic indie sound’ but it has something I just can’t put my finger on that marks them out as great, beyond the fantastic playing and the tunes.

Any final doubts I had about the band faded away as they launched into a rocked out song called ‘Hold Back’. this is not indie or even alt-rock, it’s rock with a psychedelic rock edge. This was frankly startling.

I was left thinking ‘why in the hell I have never heard of, or heard, this band before?’, they’re that impressive. Chatting to one of band after their set I found out they play in Leeds and Manchester quite often, so do check them out if you haven’t already.

Oh my fucking god why in the world have I never seen thysen before. Apparently they’re from Huddersfield which is where, to my eternal shame, I live. How can a band this good, this exciting, come from the place I live in and I’ve never even heard of them. For those not in the know, and I had to look this up, they describe themselves as a shoegaze band.

But this seems badly insufficient to describe what they do. It’s loud, gloriously wonderfully loud. It at times swings into something more space-rock. And at times it kinda reminds me of my fav bands from way back when Here & Now. And this people is just the first song.

Look a whole set of songs like that would be just wonderful but they have more to them than that. This band do melodic and frankly beautiful, and they do almost Bauhaus like post-punk that’s all doomy. And then they go all grinding rock like some mutant Samothrace.

Your head is messed with but in a beautiful way by this band. I was left reeling. And yes, it goes without saying, but I’m going to say it anyway, but this band can play. There are sounds that you just can’t work out quite where they come from, the drumming is fantastic. And visually it’s ‘can’t take your eyes off them’, their singer – who also plays a mean brilliant guitar – just seems to twist and move all over the small Lantern stage. I’m guessing I’m the only person in West Yorkshire who hasn’t heard of them, but if you, like me, haven’t seen them do that as soon as bloody possible.

And so to LØE. LØE play instrumental progressive alt-rock. If you’re already into something like that that then you can skip the next paragraph OK.

I sensed as I wrote ‘instrumental progressive alt-rock’ that some of you got slightly twitchy, or decided to skip this section of the review completely, or worse. But I’m going to urge you to keep an open mind for this isn’t really an adequate description of what they do.

For what they do is a show – each of their songs (the band use that to describe what they play) comes with a film running behind them, and ‘found’ speech. The music, the speech and the film combine into something greater than the parts. And each of their songs is about something, the band say ‘LØE’s music tries to capture and reflect triumph, heroism, anguish and struggle throughout society. Not as a political stand, but to hold a mirror up to humanity’.

For this to work, with the music being so upfront, it better be good, and it is it, it’s better than good. The songs each have their own individual mood and structure. And unlike a conventional song, the music changes, although they have an underlying structure. It’s the twists and turns in each song that hold your attention. And the songs can be melodic, they can rock out, there’s just variation, it’s not all samey at all.

This isn’t to say that I didn’t find it surprising that I’d find it so compelling, I did, but this was a wonderful surprise. I have to admit it took nearly half of their set to get it, but once I’d got it I loved it. I liked it so much that I intend to go see them ‘for fun’ not to review them. This isn’t your usual ‘live band experience’ but it’s great, go and see them, go and see them with an open mind.

SINGLE REVIEW: Thick Skin – ‘Collateral’

Thick Skin describe themselves as an emo band, now emo is one of those types of music I find it difficult to get a handle on to be honest. I feel kinda more comfortably describing this as a punky alternative rock that, crucially, does not do the quiet/loud thing. What it does do is guitars to the max, raw roaring guitars. Combine this with vocals that positively rock and you have something that has been ‘on heavy rotation’ here at LSF Towers since I was sent the review stream.

So, I hear you say, what makes this stand out from anything else that falls into this sort of music? Well, for a start the way that the guitars work together – they intertwine and mesh, the varied guitar sounds. And then there’s some really nice, I mean really really nice, drumming going on. And some really great backing vocals. Oh that and the fact that this is dark, almost doomy. But in there is a tune, yep try it, you can hum along to this.

So stripping back all the ‘this is XXX type of music’, this is a rock song, a brilliant, inventively put together, dark rock song. Play as loud as you dare.

Thick Skin are an Emo band, who hail from the punk scene in Leeds, Thick Skin formed in late 2018 with a dark and gloomy edge to their melodic sound. With members of past bands; WSTR, Calls Landing, These Minds, Beach Head & Hinges.

Following a productive first year as a band, playing shows supporting Single Mothers, Culture Abuse and Muskets. Headlining a hometown festival and an explosive weekender with Sibling for their farewell shows. Thick Skin plan to show the world what they’re made of and Collateral is the first instalment of that.

Lead Singer Jason says, “Thick Skin started after former bands parted ways and I felt a need to put everything I’d been working on out into the world and what better way to do it than with some of the best pals I have. The first year was all I could have wanted, we played with some incredible bands and the response we’ve had from our first tracks was amazing!

THE MONOFONES collectively are a rumbling drum, a heavily distorted guitar which sounds like a dying tractor, and a female voice by which you wouldn’t want to be reprimanded. LIVE REVIEW: Radius Opera: The Fire Of Olympus – Todmorden Hippodrome – 9th November 2019

Zeus (Robert Glyndwr Garland) complacently addresses his people. But he is not as secure in his power as he thinks. Troublemakers Prometheus (Sophie Dicks) and Epimetheus (Elspeth Marrow) have got in. What is more, he is in for trouble with his flunkies. Hephaestus (Michael Vincent Jones), a police chief who can dish it out but not take it, resents Zeus’ bullying. He lets Epimetheus escape. And when Zeus tells ambitious assistant Pandora (Charlotte Hoather) to go and set a honeytrap for Epimetheus, she realises how little he really thinks of her. Her gorgeous angry aria ends Act 1.

In the end Zeus is replaced by humans, but the fire is still out there.

The opera was composed by Tim Benjamin, who also combined with Anthony Peter to write the libretto. It is mainly in eighteenth century style, though the music for the rebels is freer and more expressive. The orchestra, under music director Ellie Slorach, consisted of strings and oboes. A strong cast of singers was supported by a “chorus of a thousand voices”, recorded from several choirs. Sometimes singing and sometimes speaking, they give a sense of the latent power of the people.

A powerful work with a strong message.

For the last two years THE LOVELY EGGS have sat back and watched England and the rest of the planet slowly eat itself. Their new album “I am Moron” is the result of their observations, a relentless analysis of a modern culture that is bringing the world to its knees.

“This Decision” is the first single to be released on 10th January – an outright attack on greed and mindless consumerism and a fierce defence of a no frills lifestyle they have chosen to pursue. “This Decision” goes further than capturing the zeitgeist of Brexit Britain. It’s about choice and the lack of choice in society. This decision is all mine. Is it?

“I am Moron” is the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2017 album “This is Eggland”. It is their second album co-produced and mixed by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT, Tame Impala) and continues their journey through Eggland into the unknown.

Throughout their 13 year career, The Lovely Eggs have embraced isolation. Both metaphorically and geographically the married couple have chosen to shun the social conventions of normal life and dedicated their band and their life to the pursuit of what feels right.

Operating out of their hometown of Lancaster The Lovely Eggs are lonely pioneers and self confessed kings of idiocy. Working in an industry whose currency is money, success and nepotism, The Lovely Eggs want none of it. They call out everything fake and plastic about the music industry and demand you to re-evaluate on their terms. They’re undoubtedly the most real band in Britain, operating in a world when true authenticity is hard to find. They have also spent more time on hold to the Working Tax credit hotline than any other band on the planet.

“I Am Moron” was self recorded by the band in Lancaster (“The Twin Peaks of Northern England”) between Lancaster Musicians Co-op and their home. During the recording, Lancaster Musicians Co-op was threatened with closure so the band put their album on hold to fight the eviction.

While the band were writing the album they became fascinated by the Mars One program- a global project which aims to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars. Applicants are offered a one way ticket- never to see earth again. This fascinated Holly and David who drew parallels between this mission and their own isolation as a band.

Continuing the heaviness of “ This is Eggland” “I am Moron” brings more depth to their sound bringing with it a mix of heavy psych, pop and strangeness. Some songs flicker between an earthly realism and the otherworldly loneliness of a one way space mission. While in contrast, Insect Repellent launches a gonzo-style attack against the middle classes and Bearpit questions the essence of working class freedom.

With no booking agent, manager, record label or publisher The Lovely Eggs are truly independent. And this isn’t due to economics. This is by design. From day one. And support for them is snowballing. They are selling out bigger and bigger venues and more eggheads are joining them in their crusade against bullshit.

The tour will lead The Mission through Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Wayne states: “Asking me to write about the anticipation of touring Europe whilst in the throes of a 12 week solo slog around the continent & British Isles is a bit like asking me to explain the taste of egg soufflé after being force-fed boiled eggs every day for 3 months. There is a world of difference between a boiled egg and one that is souffléd. As it is touring solo and touring with The Mission. Hence, we, The Mission, are heading out to tour Europe & Brexit’ed UK in early spring next year. Why? Don’t need a reason, we just fancy it.

Having just toured Europe it strikes me that one thing that unifies people of any & every culture and race is music. It brings people together to celebrate, to commune, to share the experience. This is why I’ve named the tour ‘The United European Party Tour’. Less a political statement (although my personal leaning – and I don’t speak for the rest of the band – veers toward Brexit being a huge backward step) but more a statement about how people can be united regardless of where they are born or where they live or their politics.

Music is about people, emotions, feelings, togetherness; not division, borders, extreme right or left or wanker politicians. So let’s get together, have a sing-song, some fun, and let’s celebrate life and being part of the human family. One thing I wanted to do on this tour to ease the rigours of spending another solid 10-12 weeks on a tour bus is to play two nights everywhere we can. That affords us at least one night in two sleeping in a hotel bed. It also enables us to play completely different sets on each of the 2 nights.”

“Our plan is to play songs one night exclusively from our 1st, 3rd, 5th and so on albums – First Chapter, Children, Grains Of Sand, Neverland, Aura, & The Brightest Light – whilst the other night will be songs exclusively from albums, 2, 4, 6 etc. – God’s Own Medicine, Carved In Sand, Masque, Blue, God Is A Bullet, & Another Fall From Grace. Which set comes on the first night will be decided on the day, so you’ll never know which you’re gonna get first”, Wayne explains, “A little devious maybe but to ensure you don’t miss a beat you’ll need to attend both nights……Ah, come on, it’ll be fun….”

Will Killen has released ‘Overthinking’ – with support from Leeds based label Monomyth Records. Will is a singer/songwriter with a talent for crafting intimate soundscapes and memorable tunes.

After capturing the attention of millions online with the self produced debut EP ‘Write You Out’, Will has recently taken to the road to showcase his three piece live outfit, combining the most intimate of moments with a larger-than-life musical master class.

Overthinking’s heartfelt lyrical content captures the twists and turns of Will’s personal life; a process he describes as both “torture and therapy.”
