0

Glasgow’s CATHOLIC ACTION have announced a fourteen-date UK headline tour next year that will see them bring their raucous live show to venues across the country

Frontman Chris McCrory says: “In Memory Of has been a long time coming for us, and it wouldn’t have happened were it not for you. It’s a record we’re incredibly proud of and we hope you are too. So, we’re thrilled to be heading out on a headline tour of the UK to perform tracks from In Memory Of and more for the people that made it happen. Thank you! And see you in February.”

Following the release of their acclaimed debut album ‘In Memory Of’, Catholic Action toured with alt. rock trio Kagoule this November which included a stop at the iconic 100 Club. The band have also just been confirmed for SXSW in 2018 alongside other British rising stars including The Magic Gang, Nadia Rose and Shame, firmly cementing their place as one of the most exciting ones-to-watch for 2018.

Catholic Action also recently shared the video for their latest single ‘Black & White’. One of In Memory Of’s standout tracks, the track was written by frontman Chris McCrory, as a reaction to finding out about the death of David Bowie.

Electronic music pioneers Way Out West (AKA Nick Warren & Jody Wisternoff) are back – not only with a brand-new album recently released on Anjunadeep; a label renowned as a hotbed of talent, but now also with a much-demanded fresh UK Tour. The internationally acclaimed duo crafted a formidable reputation over the course of the astounding 25 years that they have worked together: from peaking at #15 in the UK Singles Chart to touring live globally and remixing the likes of Orbital, Unkle, James Holden, St.Etiene and Ian Brown.

This unique seven date tour of the UK’s most authentic underground venues is a welcome return to the limelight for the pair and is set to have more than a few surprise sin store.

“The new LP continues to feature both of our eclectic influences and we were able to tour the music live on the road whilst we wrote it. We can’t wait to get back and tour UK venues with the full show.”–Way Out West

Way Out West’s flaring creative output seemingly never ceases –a style demonstrated by their recently released album “Tuesday Maybe”. The album marks the end of an eight-year release hiatus that has done nothing but render the pair’s return as emphatic and as welcome as it could possibly be.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: DeStijl’s « debut » released March, dates February 2018

0

Dance floor calibrated electro rockers DeStijl release third album « debut » on Glasstone Records. UK Tour dates have been announced to coincide.

Montpellier’s finest DeStijl take influence from classic British anthems on brand new studio release «debut». Somewhat ironically titled for a third album, DeStijl have mined their impressive contacts of Mancunian talent to help produce an album of 12 new songs released on March 5th on Glasstone Records.

DeStijl was founded in the late 90’s by P. DeStijl and John Cleary. After a long slow marinade, 10-years in the making, the band released their acclaimed concept album ‘The White Stripes’ in 2011.

In 2012, the band recorded ‘Something Wicked In This Way’ in Manchester with former I am Kloot guitarist Yves Altana as producer. The album also featured an abundance of star turns and featured performers such as Peter Hook (Joy Division & New Order) on bass and Julie Gordon (Happy Mondays) on backing vocals.

DeStijl returned to Manchester early last year to record their new album, titled « debut ». This new album includes 12 songs, more dance beats, but draws greater influence from rock music. Again, they invited very talented people from Manchester such as Monica Ward and Louise Turner on backing vocals. The album is also mixed by Danny Saber, former Black Grape member and producer for The Rolling Stones, Joe Strummer, Public Enemy, Michael Hutchence, Seal, Marilyn Manson …

DeStijl release « debut » on March 5th 2018 on Glasstone Records.

DeStijl are Fred Vernay (vocals), P. DeStijl (keyboards & composing), Pat Robert (guitars) Eric Manchon (drums).

February 12th @ Hyde, Corporation Pop
February 15th @ Manchester, Fallow Cafe

GIG NEWS: Plan B at Haydock Park Racecourse 21st July & The Lightning Seeds at Aintree Racecourse 18th May

0

The Jockey Club Live are excited to reveal two incredible performers who will be coming to the North West this summer, in their first announcements for the 2018 summer season. The BRIT Award winner, cultural commentator, critically acclaimed director and actor, and musical maverick Ben Drew aka Plan B will headlining Haydock Park Racecourse on Saturday 21st July, with Liverpudlian Legends The Lightning Seeds opening the season on Friday 18th May with a special hometown show at Aintree Racecourse.

Plan B’s sophomore album, The Defamation Of Strickland Banks, achieved quadruple-platinum status, selling over 1.4 million copies in the UK alone, and hit the #1 album spot on release. It saw him win both a BRIT and three Ivor Novello Awards. Following this, his 2012 directorial debut (and accompanying album) iLLManors saw him smashing boundaries with his creative style of overlapping stories and interweaving rap-narrative, boldly addressing socio-political issues with his often brutal cultural commentary, seeing Ben nominated for his fifth BRIT Award, nominated for his first Mercury Music prize, and once again hitting #1 in the UK album chart. He will be releasing his eagerly anticipated fourth album ‘Heaven Before All Hell Breaks Loose’ on 14th April via Atlantic Records.

Ian Broudie’s Lightning Seeds have made an astonishing impact on the nation’s musical consciousness. Forming in Liverpool in 1989, the band went on to have commercial success throughout the nineties with hits including ‘Pure’, ‘The Life of Riley’ and ‘Lucky You’. Their biggest and most unforgettable hit came in 1996 with ‘Three Lions’ which is fondly remembered by football fans as sending the England football team off to Euro ’96, and was a number 1 hit in both ’96 and again in ’98. Previously announced for Aintree Racecourse is multi-platinum selling artist Craig David, who will headline on Friday 15th June.

Tickets will be on sale at 8am on Friday 26th January via http://www.thejockeyclublive.co.uk, with a presale available to customers at 8am on Wednesday 24th January. Tickets are priced starting at £30 (Aintree) and £35 (Haydock). There will be limited child tickets available, with all all T&C’s available on aintree.thejockeyclub.co.uk and haydock.thejockeyclub.co.uk. There will be hospitality packages available to suit all budgets.

In addition to Aintree and Haydock Park, The Jockey Club Live will be hosting live concerts across Sandown Park, Newmarket, Market Rasen and Carlisle racecourses this summer.

VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: FIZZY BLOOD Release Video For ‘ADHD’, tour with Spring King later this month, headline tour February

0

Leeds band FIZZY BLOOD have revealed the new video for their single ‘ADHD’.

The track is written from the experiences of guitarist Paul Howells, who is diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Created by Richard Biggs and Jolyon White, the team behind Channel 4’s 2016 campaign We’re the Superhumans, the video gives viewers an insight to living with ADHD, visually depicting hyperactivity and inattention. The condition affects up to 5% of children and can often go undiagnosed, even in adults.

“I was diagnosed with having symptoms of ADHD along with type 2 bipolar disorder at the age of 21 and I guess my experience of it was playing on my mind when I sat down to write that day.

When we were discussing the song with Richard & Jolyon, the super talented and creative guys behind the video, they suggested trying to capture the experiences in the lyrics, but visually, and we all thought this was a brilliant idea… It immediately spoke to my personal experiences of living with ADHD. The end result is weird, hyperactive, and fucked up – we love it” – Paul Howells (guitars)

An alternative 360° of the video is available on Fizzy Blood’s Facebook page.

The end of January will see Fizzy Blood hit the road with Spring King, alongside Calva Louise. This will be followed by the band’s first UK headline run in February.

Fizzy Blood have spent early 2018 in the studio working on the follow-up to Summer Of Luv. Watch this space for further announcements.

SINGLE REVIEW: DENSE – ‘Irreversible Knot’

0

This, boys and girls, is a trip, a trip through a wall of sound. It batters you, it hypnotises you, it leaves you drained. Drained in a fucking great way.

DENSE play psychedelic garage rock, it’s loud, it’s just loaded with fuzz, noise and guitars roaring away. After a deceptively restrained start ‘Irreversible Knot’ comes at you in waves, there are lulls, but these just give you time to prepare for the next surge of thrilling guitar noise. But there is a throb, a throb that beats through the track, a throb that hypnotises, a throb that anchors the noise. And there are vocals, vocals that vibrate and echo, that just add the thrill.

But listen again, (and in my case listen again and again) and you notice that there is a more than just noise, there is structure, there is even at times a tune you could hum. And those vocals are sounding sweet, this guy can sing. The guitar noise is controlled, there is clever use of effects. And the drumming is subtle where it needs to be, and then it lets go where it needs to. And the bass, well the bass is cool. There is space in this track outside of the loud bits that is great, and you can hear everything, it doesn’t descend into a morass of sound unless DENSE want it to.

OK so in an effort to be objective is there anything wrong with this track, nothing apart from the fact it could easily be longer, way longer. Those waves of sound are addictive, I just wanted this to stretch out.

This track left me with one question ‘why in the hell had I not heard anything by DENSE before?’ If you haven’t either I suggest you remedy this immediately by going to their Soundcloud page, there is some fine, fine music there.

If you love loud garage rock or acid rock you’re going to love ‘Irreversible Knot’. Just make sure that you play it loud, way loud.

Blue Rose Code, aka acclaimed singer-songwriter Ross Wilson, released ‘The Water Of Leith’, his first album for Navigator Records, in autumn 2017. A host of stellar reviews culminated in the award for Scottish Album of the Year from The Skinny.

Stand-out album track ‘Ebb & Flow’ was released as a single today, described by Ross thus, “Above the entrance to the Scottish National Gallery Of Modern Art there is a neon sign that exclaims “Everything Is Going To Be Alright!”. The problem that I have with that is I wasted so long waiting for everything to be alright, waiting for something to happen but now, the truth as I see it is that everything is alright. A subtle but powerful difference. There is nothing wrong with right now, that’s what the song is about.”

Teaming up once again with Not3s – the BBC Sound of 2018 nominated rapper whose new, Top-20 single, ‘My Lover’, Mabel also features on – ‘Fine Line’ soundtracks those crossroad moments in a budding romance whilst urging women to take the wheel. “Fine Line,” says Mabel, “is a playful track that I wrote about that fun phase at the beginning of a relationship when you’re trying to figure each other out. SINGLE, ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Ducking Punches drop ‘Distant Shadows’, album ‘Alamort’ out February, dates February-July 2018

0

Limbering up for their eagerly awaited new album ‘Alamort’ (out 16/02/2018 via Xtra Mile Recordings) Ducking Punches are back to whet appetites for the release with a brand new single: ‘Distant Shadows’.

Unafraid to flaunt their literary chops, the title of this latest track is an intended lyrical play on the words of the Ancient Roman poet and philosopher, Horace:

“Pulvis et umbra sumus. (We are but dust and shadow.)”

Offering further insight into the heart of “Distant Shadows”, frontman Dan Allen says: “Distant Shadows is about drifting apart from friends through a lack of trying and a lack of common ground. It focuses on how fickle friendships are not healthy to have in your life. The title is a play on words, taking the line from Horace, and twisting the meaning.”

With its title taken from an old archaic term meaning to be ‘half dead from exhaustion’, ‘Alamort’, the tense and exhilarating new album from Ducking Punches will be released on 16th of February 2018 through the Xtra Mile Recordings label.

Around the release of the album, the band will also be playing a series of live dates including a launch party at London’s The Lexington (16 Feb) and an un-missable hometown show at The Arts Centre in Norwich (17 Feb). Plus, the band are now delighted to announce a slew of shows across the UK for later in the year, with pit stops across Wales, Scotland and England – full dates and details below.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: The Barr Brothers ‘Queens Of The Breakers’ available, tour dates January/February 2108

0
Barr Brothers

The Barr Brothers’ ‘Queens of the Breakers’ is available on Secret City Records, a glowing album that speaks to the raw, elemental power of reflection, forgiveness, loss, and growing up.

Watch The Barr Brothers performed ‘It Came to Me’ live at the Paste Studios in New York: https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2017/09/the-barr-brothers-it-came-to-me.html

‘Queens of the Breakers’ takes its name from The Breakers, a Vanderbilt mansion perched atop Newport, Rhode Island’s rocky coastline. As a teenager, Brad was part of a mischievous group of friends that would descend upon Newport dressed in their mothers’ clothing; the better to shock the tourists. It’s a vehicle for reflection: a tight group of friends that grew apart, now seen through a Terrence Malick ‘Tree Of Life’-like haze.

Featuring brothers Brad and Andrew Barr, and harpist Sarah Page, The Barr Brothers will embark on a massive international tour next month that begins with a European run with The War On Drugs followed by the band’s biggest-ever North American tour to date. See below for all dates.
