SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Will Varley shares ‘Statues’ , dates January/February 2018

0

Will Varley has released ‘Statues’, the latest track to arrive from his forthcoming 5th studio album ‘Spirit Of Minnie’, released February 9, 2018 through Xtra Mile Recordings.

Following 2016’s much praised ‘Kingsdown Sundown’ and a sold out show at London’s Union Chapel, ‘Spirit Of Minnie’ marks a distinct change of direction for the singer songwriter, being the first time he has recorded with a full backing band. Produced by Cameron McVey (Massive Attack, Portishead, Neneh Cherry), the new album expands on the pared back musical palette of Varley’s previous sound, all the while retaining his gift for painterly, affirming and immediate lyric writing.

After a run of UK shows the album will come out on the same day he plays his biggest headline show to date at the iconic 02 Shepherds Bush Empire. Will is accompanying the announcement by releasing a brand new track from the album on Spotify and other digital platforms along with his entire back catalogue which, until now, could not be found on any streaming sites.

Aided by McVey’s nuanced, widescreen production and the warm cascading sound of his new band, ‘All Those Stars’ offers the perfect first glimpse into ‘Spirit Of Minnie’, straddling Will’s sound and style from past to present. Counting the likes of Billy Bragg, Valerie June and Frank Turner as his fans, and with tours scheduled across Europe and America, the young songwriter from Deal seems poised for a huge 2018.

TOUR NEWS: Astroid Boys March 2018 tour

0

Astroid Boys have announced their UK headline tour kicking off in March 2018!

2017 saw Astroid Boys release their debut album ‘Broke’, receiving great support from Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, Annie Mac and Target! Their aim when starting the band was to create something new and exciting which they have certainly done and translated perfectly on their debut album. Broke details the thoughts and feelings of a generation who feel unheard and ignored. Astroid Boys took this as an opportunity to really demonstrate their ability to merge two rebellious genres into something of their very own creation.

With the band sitting comfortably between grime and punk/hardcore, their sound fuses together multiple sub-cultures and perspectives—a growth that defines them less as a band and more as a voice for the youth which they will be taking across the UK this coming spring.

Not many artists can say they’ve supported Trash Talk and Deez Nuts, as well as Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash, Skepta and Stormzy, but Astroid Boys have taken their live show to the urban and metal scenes across the UK. Along with an impressive list of tour supports under their belt, they’ve played at Reading & Leeds Festival, Download, Boomtown, Latitude festivals and T in the Park.

ABOUT HANDMADE FESTIVAL:

Handmade is a multi-venue music and arts festival in the city of Leicester. The festival, which is totally independent, is curated by some of the city’s best loved independent venues and promoters, all of whom have been involved in putting on events for decades, working tirelessly to bring great things to Leicester.

Since its inception in 2013, Handmade Festival has gone from strength-to-strength, and has consistently challenged people’s expectations of what a local independent DIY festival can be, and what it can offer in the city. In its first year Handmade took over reclaimed spaces – including an ex-library, the city’s historic guildhall, a church and some of the oldest buildings in the city.

For its sophomore year, the event grew to include the huge Hansom Hall theatre, before growing again in 2015, necessitating a move to the city’s O2 Academy venue filling the spectacular Queens Hall, Scholar and multiple re-purposed spaces around the building. The event saw festival organisers vindicated – creating the perfect “DIY” festival within what would normally be considered a particularly “un DIY” venue. It was a different beast, but it was the perfect festival for the city.

2016 saw the festival strike up partnerships with tastemakers such as Upset, Dork, Last.fm, Witchita Records as well as both PPL and PRS to help curate their estimable line-up, Last year’s line-up also saw the festival utilise iconic venues around the city, which included two stages that featured guest line-up curation from Drowned in Sound and ‘Leicester folk hero’ Grace Petrie.

In 2018 Handmade will be filling all of O2 Academy Leicester’s venues as well as spaces within University of Leicester Students Union and Attenborough Arts Centre making it the festival’s biggest event to date.

Speaking about this year’s festival, co-organiser John Helps, says “This year’s line-up is a big step up for Handmade and an important one for us to take. We want this year’s festival to challenge people’s expectations of what Handmade can be and what we can do with a “DIY” city festival. We hope people are just as excited about it as we are.”

Over the past 5 years, the festival has seen sets from artists such as: Frightened Rabbit, Twin Atlantic, British Sea Power, IDLES, Pulled Apart By Horses, Deaf Havana, We Are Scientists, 65daysofstatic, Swim Deep, Los Campesinos, Dry the River, Dutch Uncles, Slaves, Bo Ningen, And So I Watch You From Afar, Shonen Knife, Eagulls, Honeyblood, Iliketrains, Rolo Tomassi, Nine Black Alps, Three Trapped Tigers, The Twilight Sad, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Sam Duckworth, Johnny Foreigner, Tangled Hair, Tellison Sky Larkin, Sulk, Maybeshewill, Kagoule, Jaws, Shame, Goat Girl, HMLTD, Happyness, Haus and Her Name Is Calla, with comedy performances from Robin Ince, Rob Deering, James Acaster and many more.

GIG NEWS: Heather Findlay and Friends – Expect a Magical Night of Musical Delights

0

Rarely playing in her hometown of York, internationally acclaimed singer songwriter Heather Findlay will play a one-off Snowstorms and Icicles Winter Concert at York Central Methodist Church on Friday 8th December. Heather won’t be alone, she will be supported by duo Odin Dragonfly, which features Angela Gordon of Mostly Autumn and up and coming performer Scarlett Gordon who will open the show.

A stripped-back show, the winter event will feature the all singing, Heather Findlay quartet ensemble – Heather Findlay on lead vocals, acoustic guitar and woodwind; Sarah Dean on the harp, piano, flute and woodwind; Martin Ledger on numerous guitars and not to mention the newest member of the group Joska de Langen on piano, flute and acoustic guitar.

The intimate winter concert has been created to celebrate the first year anniversary of Heather’s winter album ‘I Am Snow’, which has been hugely popular and has received rave reviews. Heather Findlay says “We loved performing the folkier material from I Am Snow last winter and have actually just made a new recording of another couple of traditional tunes; ‘Gaudete’ (which went down an absolute storm last year..!) and the gorgeous ballad ‘The Snows They Melt The Soonest’, which we’ve only just worked into the live set. I love having a band where everyone swaps and changes instruments and this line-up is no different with Sarah picking up flute for the latter, and Joska playing acoustic guitar on a few numbers too! The new record will be available on the night. Copies will also be up for grabs leading up to Christmas, and as a download too so please keep your eye on the website for details”

Tickets are £10 each (advance booking) or £12 on the door and can be purchased at www.heatherfindlay.co.uk.

The winter concert will take place on Friday 8th December in Room One of the York Central Methodist Church on St Saviourgate and doors open at 7pm with the show starting at 7.30pm.

NEWS: Help Musicians UK has launched its new 24/7 mental health service ‘Music Minds Matter’

0

The country’s leading independent music charity, Help Musicians UK (HMUK), has launched its landmark new 24/7 mental health service ‘Music Minds Matter’ for anyone working in the music industry.

The Music Minds Matter service is the industry’s most comprehensive yet – combining advice, signposting, clinical pathways and professional therapeutic services, including counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Uniquely, the service also provides access to the charity’s grant funding, and individuals may also access advice on legal issues, debt and benefits. This is a first for the British music industry.

Those needing help and emotional support can call 0808 802 8008 free of charge, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

HMUK has provided help, support and opportunities to empower musicians at all stages of their lives for 96 years. During 2016, HMUK’s Health & Welfare team experienced a 22% increase in requests for help from musicians across the UK, and in total last year, the charity spent £1.9 million helping these individuals.

In response to this, HMUK commissioned the University of Westminster and MusicTank to undertake the world’s largest academic study into mental health and the music industry. The findings of the report ‘Can Music Make You Sick?’, led to HMUK’s pledge to launch the Music Minds Matter service by December this year, as well as initiate the music industry’s first Mental Health Taskforce in collaboration with music industry partners, organisations and stakeholders. Further information: https://www.musicmindsmatter.org.uk/the-study/

HMUK’s approach with Music Minds Matter is to provide individually tailored support and access to appropriate resources. In particular, the new 24/7 service will provide:

  • Listening and emotional support
  • Support and advice in getting a diagnosis
  • Signposting to additional services that can support issues around mental health, addiction, eating disorders, sexual harassment, and homelessness
  • CBT, counselling, advice on debt, welfare benefits and legal issues
  • Links to the charity’s Health & Welfare grants

Advice can also be accessed by emailing MMM@helpmusicians.org.uk (please note a 48-hour turnaround)

ALBUM & GIG NEWS: Nick Hodgson announces debut solo album ‘Tell Your Friends’ out 26th January, plays Brudenell Leeds 18th December

0

Nick Hodgson has announced his debut solo album ‘Tell Your Friends’. Set for release on January 26th 2018 on his own label imprint Prediction Records and available to pre-order here

As main songwriter and founder member of Kaiser Chiefs, Hodgson already has an enviable record of global hits under his belt, including number 1 single ‘Ruby’ and ‘I Predict A Riot’. Since leaving the band in 2012 he has written and produced for other artists, and has seen success in this new world with the likes of Mark Ronson, John Newman, Hurts and Ratboy.

A solo career was not something Hodgson was even considering, as he explains: ‘It was a long time since I’d written a song just for myself…and then I wrote Thank You”.

‘Thank You’ was written one night in Leeds when Hodgson was suffering from man- flu and waiting for an email that never arrived about a track he had co-written for another artist. It proved a pivotal moment in the making of ‘Tell Your Friends’, and was quickly followed by first single Suitable and RSVP in the same week: “I suddenly thought, OK, let’s make this a proper album.”

All the tracks were written and recorded at Hodgson’s home studio in London in the summer of 2017. And as quickly as the ideas came to fruition, the album was completed when he “…couldn’t write any more and knew that it was finished.” It was produced alongside Dave McCracken (Ian Brown, Depeche Mode) whom he met on the Ivor Novello judging panel, highlighting again the serendipitous creation of Tell Your Friends.

Hodgson played all the instruments himself, aside from a guitar solo by Kaiser’s cohort, Whitey on Feel Better, violin on Don’t Forget To Go To Sleep courtesy of Anna C Hodgson, and My Own American Dream features The Music’s Rob Harvey (keeping it in the Leeds family) on backing vocals.

Adept at his craft, Tell Your Friends marks Hodgson’s leap from band member to solo artist, and is a collection of songs that sees him expressing himself in a more personal way than ever before: “The lyrics are very honest, I wanted to express myself on this record, delve a little deeper and draw out some feelings I’d never touched on in songs before… I’d mainly written with someone else’s voice in mind, so the lyrics would reflect that. I would shy away from writing very personal things, but with this album I thought there’s no point doing it unless it’s honest.”

Encompassing his knack for a melody, the album basks in his ability to conjure a great lyric and punchy chorus, be it about love, frustration or fear.

Tell Your Friends is released through Prediction Records on 26th January 2018 and available on all formats via all usual outlets and is available to pre-order here

The official video for Suitable is out now. It was directed by Nick’s wife Anna in Suffolk one summer morning at 4.30am as the sun rose. It was filmed on an iPhone using a £4 selfie-stick with some pretty sleepy and confused cows as spectators

Nick J. D. Hodgson supports The Cribs at Brudenell Leeds, 18th December 2017.
