SINGLE REVIEW: Bang Bang Club – ‘Melody’

0

So the first thing you’re gonna notice about this track from Sheffield’s Bang Bang Club is that it has a tune (or even, if you’ll forgive me, melody) that is hugely catchy. Then you start to hear hints of things that had me, initially at least, thinking ‘hold on, it’s alternative rock but what the hell else am I hearing’. And then it came to me, this is loaded with sixties pop feel. I mean, yep it soars with that alternative rock thing, but it’s full of catchy little hooks. It has ‘pop sensibility’ in spades (am I sounding like a proper music critic or what? That’s just a tiny bit scary to be honest).

So sound wise what does this thing sound like? Well, I’ve been searching for a way to sum that up. It doesn’t exactly rock out, it’s not a screamingly loud rock track. It’s like a slightly more rocky sounding sixties R’n’B thing but with these yearning alt rock bits. That makes it sound a mess, it isn’t. The whole is great. And watch for the beginning, this has an almost post-punk thing going on, just lovely.

The playing is fantastic, these guys can really play. The drums pound out a slightly swinging beat, the guitars are in a groove. The vocals are just on it.

Look people, this thing has radio hit written all over it, it has enough of that alternative thing to appeal to people who like that, and poppy hooks for everyone else. That’s a clever thing to do. And it’s gonna get your feet tapping at the least and up on your feet if you’ve got any sort of soul. I mean yep you could rock out to this or actually throw some shapes if you’re that way inclined.

The info

Bang Bang Club is a four piece Rock ‘n’ Roll band from Sheffield. The lads have been playing together since Jake forced the others to join his Beatles tribute band at infant school – complete with grey suits and mop tops!

Singer/guitarist, Jake Sissons, is influenced by Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Manics and The Smiths. He became obsessed with music at an early age and can list the entire Beatles discography, release dates included, off the top of his head like Rain Man. He plays with expert precision and is searching for the perfect melody.

Bassist, Adam Eaton, is a panel beater by trade. His workman’s hands provide a unique take on the bass. He plays hard and fast, adding a unique garage grunge sound to the band’s almost poppy melodies.

Drummer, Tom Barker, has a flair for creating interesting beats and relishes hitting those babies hard. He’s known for his relentless rhythms and stomping back beat. His drumming is the primal force that drives the songs.

Guitarist, Sam Leader, is the latest addition to the band. Not only a wizard on guitar, he’s also the band’s resident tech-head. He even wagers the occasional groove-off onstage with Adam. It is a sight!

Today, critically and commercially acclaimed UK dance music duo, Groove Armada announce their long-awaited return to the live stage, with four very special and intimate capacity UK shows this winter.

The shows, their first since terminating touring as a live act in 2013 to pursue DJ-only appearances will feature the full original band and touring setup performing their biggest hits and selections from their incredibly well-documented career that now reaches an impressive 21st Anniversary.

29th Nov – Bristol, Marble Factory
30th Nov – Glasgow, Galvanisers Yard / SWG3
1st Dec – London, Electric Brixton
2nd Dec – Manchester, The Warehouse Project

PRE SALE TICKETS ON SALE: THURSDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 9:00AM

From the big tents of the nineties to some of the world’s most underground DJ booths, Groove Armada’s Tom Findlay and Andy Cato have roamed freely and inimitably through dance music, embracing musical eclecticism with charm, risk and adventure. Having met in 1994, the pair helped shape club culture since the release of their debut album “Northern Star”. – Time after time reaching artistic peaks with underground reverence, genre-defying energy and dominant pop culture impact.

Speaking on the return of Groove Armada’s live show Andy Cato said: “The live show is what defined us. Refining a genuinely live dance music experience became an obsession, from minute sonic details to the number of sides on the lazer glitter ball. The reward was a lawless and electric 15 years on the road; runs at Brixton so long it felt like we lived there, the loudest ever recorded cheer at Lowlands, taking over Centennial Park in Sydney, Saturday nights in Barrowlands, air traffic control on the phone to the Other Stage at Glastonbury, once you start… We did all this with the best on and off stage crew ever assembled. The vibe in the camp was special and radiated. Behind the scenes, from cooks to truckers, we’re always asked if we’ll get the gang back on the road. If we’re going to do it one more time, it’ll be when we’re 21” – Andy Cato

A pioneering combination of performance and electronics, the Groove Armada live show rapidly evolved into one of the very best in dance music, taking electronic music out of the clubs and on to main stages at festivals all over the world.

From Glastonbury to Sydney the shows, packed with era-defining hits like ‘I See You Baby’ and the Grammy nominated ‘Superstylin’ were defined by their display of live instrumentation, impressive visuals and soaring guest vocal performances.

The 21st Anniversary UK Tour kicks off at Bristol’s newest live music venue The Marble Factory on 29th Nov before heading to Scotland to recently refurbished Galvanisers Yard / SWG3 the following evening 30th Nov. 1st Dec see’s Electric Brixton host Groove Armada’s much anticipated capital show before the tour bus embarks for Manchester’s prominent The Warehouse Project on the 2nd Dec.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Fabled album ‘Short Stories’ due out 28th September, 15 date tour starts 1st October 2018

0

Formed in 2014, Fabled is the brainchild of saxophonist/clarinettist, Sam Rapley. Following on from the success of their recent EP, the band have been performing extensively across the UK building a loyal fanbase and writing material for their debut album ‘Short Stories’. As the title implies, the album interprets collection of short stories tackling subjects such as life, love, and death told through richly atmospheric and expressive music, which draws from Rapley and his fellow musicians shared love of jazz ensembles, literature, classical musicians, world music, modern composition and indie-folk.

Originally from Manchester and now living in London, Rapley has been quickly solidifying himself as one of the most exciting up and coming musicians and composers in the scene. As well as playing in Fabled, Rapley plays regularly as a sideman with BBC Radio 3 Next Generation artist Misha Mullov-Abbado Group, Troykestra, Maria Chiara Argiro Quintet, Waaju and Ralph Wyld’s Mosaic.

Looking at his recent work it’s easy to see how such a multifarious source of styles and genres have collided on ‘Short Stories’. At times the album calls to mind the likes of Mammal Hands, Gogo Penguin, Polar Bear and Tigran Hamasyan whilst undertones of Debussy, Ravel, Peter Broderick and Lau can also be heard throughout. Tracks such as ‘Old Owls’ capture the raw intensity that can be heard throughout the current London scene. Whilst elsewhere, tracks such as ‘Dove Stone’ and ‘H.G’ are heavily cinematic with mellifluous sax and clarinet lines layered over idiosyncratic guitar and piano parts, which provide percussive and rhythmic qualities whilst also intertwining melodies throughout Rapley’s playing.

There is a sentimental poetry to Fabled’s approach to finding new ways to tell age-old stories through their intimate and heavily textured music. Their redolent instrumentation and vast voicings speak volumes in the absence of words, giving contemplative life to the stories laid out by the band. Albums that manage to merge such a wide variety of styles and exhibit such a multitude of musical landscapes are rare. Fabled have produced a debut which is both accomplished and distinctive, and this is only the very start of their journey.

Fabled is:
Sam Rapley – saxophone / clarinet / compositions
Alex Munk – guitar
Matt Robinson – piano
Conor Chaplin – double bass
Will Glaser – drums

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Mabel unveils new single, ‘One Shot’, headline tour November/December 2018

0

Mabel has unveiled new single ‘One Shot’, which is available today via Polydor Records. A UK headline tour has also been confirmed to close out an incredible 2018 for Mabel.

‘One Shot’ is that classic, contemporary call for girl-power from Mabel, blending her now-instantly-identifiable soulful vocals with a warm palette of global sounds. A sun-kissed live favourite over the festival season (and a track which Mabel’s expansive, impassioned young audience has long-since demanded the release of), ‘One Shot’ is – says Mabel – “so important! After ‘Finders Keepers’ and ‘Fine Line’ I wanted to make another up-tempo, playful track that people could dance to. ‘One Shot’ is about playing hard to get and knowing what you want. I do believe that when it comes to relationships that you have to set the bar high and know your worth so that you never settle, and that’s what ‘One Shot’ is about.”

In 2018 Mabel has truly seen her ‘One Shot’ and taken it, blossoming in both her confidence as an artist, and a still-just-22-year-old still finding her place in the world.

Five weeks in the top 10 for platinum-selling breakthrough single ‘Finders Keepers’ led to Mabel’s nomination for her first ever BRIT Award (Critics’ Choice), extensive European dates with Harry Styles, her sold-out headline tour (including London’s Kentish Town Forum) and increasingly-surreal experiences around the world (from a childhood spent in Sweden and Malaga to walking out at Wembley Stadium). Repaying all her early promise in the process, Mabel has emerged as one of the UK’s most positive, candid young musical role models, with songs that frequently explore everything from identity (sexual, racial, personal), the challenges of modern relationships, and working out who you are and what you want.

‘One Shot’ is a further taste of Mabel’s massively-anticipated debut album, which she has worked on around-the-clock all year and follows early body of work ‘Ivy To Roses’. She has since become one of the top 500 streamed artists in the world, which include Top-15-charting collaborations with the likes of Jax Jones (on recent hit ‘Ring Ring’) and Not3s (‘Fine Line’, ‘My Lover’). A project arguably entwined in Mabel’s DNA – from finding her voice in a musical dynasty to enrolling in music college and writing songs in secret – it’s those dual forces of anxiety but quiet self-belief that ultimately have empowered Mabel to move between those worlds of music, fashion, dance, and art. The results always feel quintessentially ‘Mabel’, and in ‘One Shot’ a vital voice in UK youth culture takes her next step towards international pop stardom.

SINGLE NEWS: Andy Doonan’s eagerly awaited single ‘Somebody Loves You’ set to be released in aid of York Mind

0

‘Somebody Loves You’ tells the story of someone battling with isolation and feelings of inadequacy – something which affects so many but is often overlooked. Andy, who is a huge supporter of York Mind, says “The proceeds of the song download will be donated to York Mind, a mental health charity who support individuals by providing one to one support, finding ways into employment, and providing social opportunities to tackle isolation. They work hard to raise mental health awareness and challenge stigmatisation. Mental health problems can affect anyone at any time, and charities such as York Mind improve and saves lives. If my single can raise just £500 this will pay for someone to attend one of the support groups for a whole year.”

Andy Doonan released a teaser video for ‘Somebody Loves You’ on Sunday with the full video set to be published later on this week. The teaser video has already received rave reviews, has been viewed hundreds of times and has a high demand of people wanting to download the single which will benefit the work that the team do at York Mind.

Since Andy started his musical career nearly a decade ago, he has had huge success from performing at the London O2 Arena to supporting acts such Toploader, The Hoosiers and The Staves and having his music played on BBC Radio 6 Music. He also created his own folk-rock band, Everlate, who were a hugely successful independent band. Alongside his new single, Andy is also working on material which he hopes to release in early 2019.
Andy will be performing the single alongside up and coming performer Molly Teasdale, high energy country band The Rusty Pegs and Bull – a BritPop Rock band who have recently returned to their hometown of York after a successful tour of America on Friday 21 September at York’s Little Festival of Live Music which takes place in the Music Marquee on Parliament Street in York.

‘Somebody Loves You’ will be available to download at www.andydoonan.com from Sunday 16 September with all money made from the single being donated to York Mind. For more information on Andy Doonan or to listen to his music visit www.andydoonan.com.

SINGLE REVIEW: Sunflower Thieves – ‘Two Halves’

0

‘Two Halves’ is a deceptively simple song. It has this lovely beautiful lifting feel and a tune that you’ll find coming back to you. But without Amy and Lily’s vocals it would be a really nice thing, but with their vocals it’s haunting, it’s mesmerising, it’s beautiful. It’s the voices that make this song, voices that seduce you, voices that weave their delicate way deep into your head.

If I’m being honest pop-folk is one of those types of music that usually leaves me, how shall we say, cold. I usually find it neither one thing or the other but Sunflower Thieves’ take on it had me won over in the opening seconds of the song. It’s that lovely simple guitar and sparse keyboard with those voices. By the time the drums came in I was totally hooked. It’s poppy but wonderfully delicate and gentle.

And I opened by saying it’s a deceptively simple track but simple is really hard to do well, you have to know how to use space, and everything just has to be right. You can’t hide things under layers and layers of sound. Sunflower Thieves do simple really well. And because it’s simply arranged things jump out at you (well not really jump, it’s not that sort of song but you know what I mean) – there is just the most wonderful use of cymbal on this track, there’s a bit where it just sort adds a wash of texture, the guitar is gently loose, the keyboards are so sparse, so simple but oh so effective.

Sometimes all you need is something that gently washes over you and soothes your worried mind, ‘Two Halves’ does that beautifully.

The single is available on all major streaming and download platforms.

TOUR & ALBUM NEWS: The Tea Street Band announce Winter 2018 dates, ‘Frequency’ out 9th November

THE TEA STREET BAND have announced details of their new album ‘Frequency’, to be released November 9th on Modern Sky UK.

The band have now announced a run of additional UK shows as follows:

The first track to be taken from the Tea Street Band’s new album is ‘Feel It’, now available to stream now and as an instant grat with album pre-orders. ‘Frequency’ is the cult Liverpool band’s follow-up to their 2014 self-titled debut, which gained support from tastemakers such as Huw Stephens, John Kennedy, Janice Long, Clint Boon, and Rob Da Bank, and saw The Tea Street Band travel as far as Australia and South Korea on promotional duties.

Listen to ‘Feel It’

The Tea Street Band follow in the tradition of tunefully idiosyncratic Liverpool bands like The Coral, The Lightning Seeds, and Shack, though their blissful Electronica sounds like none of those bands. Rather, The Tea Street Band are closer to artists like Tunng and This Is The Kit, blending instrumentation with synths and beats. Like so many Liverpool artists, at the heart of The Tea Street Band is a keen ear for melody. Driven by propulsive hooks, their songs grab from the get-go, often building to a euphoric rush.

Recorded over a year in Liverpool’s fabled Parr Street Studios with Chris Taylor (Ian Brown, Millburn), ‘Frequency’ is a big leap forward for The Tea Street Band. “The writing process was different than the first album,” says frontman Timo Tierney. “We wrote it together, with all of us having a massive input on each song, the title and the art work (photo By John Johnson, designed by Dom Foster). It’s all of ours. We have all pushed each other musically and that can be heard on songs like ‘Sacré-Coeur’ and ‘Marseille Blues.’”

The Tea Street Band: Timo Tierney (vocals, guitar), Nick Otaegui (bass, vocals), Lee Smith (guitar, synth) and Dom Allen (drums).

TOUR NEWS: The Slocan Ramblers October-November 2018 Tour

0

Rooted in tradition, fearlessly creative and possessing a bold, dynamic sound, with a reputation for energetic live shows and impeccable musicianship, The Slocans have been winning over audiences from RockyGrass to Merlefest and everywhere in between.

Influenced by artists such as The Stanley Brothers, Norman Blake and Steve Earle, the band instil both the old and the modern into their music and on Queen City Jubilee, The Slocans’ showcase their unique blend of bluegrass, old-time and folk with deep song-writing, lightning fast instrumentals and sawdust-thick vocals.

Produced by Chris Coole, one of Canada’s pre-eminent folk musicians, Queen City Jubilee marks a profound step in the band’s growth both as songwriters and interpreters, the Slocans’ old time and folk influences shining through on originals like ‘Makin’ Home’, ‘Mighty Hard Road’ and ‘First Train in the Morning’, while their passion for rippin’ bluegrass and interpreting traditional music is showcased on ‘Mississippi Heavy Water Blues’, ‘Sun’s Gonna Shine in my Back Door Someday’ and ‘Riley the Furniture Man’. The three dedicated instrumentals on the album, ‘Down in the Sugarbush’, ‘New Morning’ and ‘Shut the Door’, reveal their collective influences and the direction taken on Queen City Jubilee.

The Slocan Ramblers came out of Toronto’s gritty bluegrass scene, playing late-night bars to boisterous crowds in a city once called Hogtown for its industrial pig meat industry. The dusty grit in banjo player Frank Evans’ voice fits perfectly into an older world of bluegrass that still remembers its roots in working class communities. Perhaps that is why they’re more Louvin Brothers than they are Ricky Skaggs. Some of this comes from their long-term interest in and respect for old-time Appalachian traditions. Evans moves back and forth between clawhammer and Scruggs-style banjo, while mandolinist Adrian Gross has the speed and aggression of Big Mon himself in his playing. Thundering bassist Alastair Whitehead has a softer voice than Evans, but with a hint of world-weary wistfulness. Guitarist Darryl Poulsen’s as steady as a rolling train, shovelling coal into the red-hot furnace of racing bluegrass tempos.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Sunshine Frisbee Laserbeam announce new album ‘Blackout Cowboy’, tour dates through November 2018

0

What of the bands that can’t stop writing? How do you keep up? Like Bob Pollard and R. Stevie Moore before them, it’s something that must just be there, in the blood. Over the last few years, Sunshine Frisbee Laserbeam have been putting out quality material at an alarming rate – 100+ songs, and if it wasn’t for the day jobs, there’d have been far more – whilst never quite fitting in to any one pigeonhole long enough to be branded with a genre. So, where to start? Here. “Blackout Cowboy” is that record. It could as easily be their debut. A fresh slate from which to start from. A band with 100 songs distilling everything that makes them great down to just 8 new songs. Like a record from the 70’s, succinct and compact, total confidence in the material.

Early lo-fi offerings in the form of two EPs, a self-titled album, and a Halloween single secured the then three-piece a regular spot on the Birmingham music scene, as well as frequent invites to towns and cities up and down the country. A couple of increases in headcount (most recently Junior Laidley on keyboards and percussion) and the purple patch writing sessions around “Blackout Cowboy” have allowed the band to move away from the lo-fi aesthetic they once adhered to, and are now able to work the same unique approach to songwriting into an ever expanding range of hooks, riffs and drones that fill any room they play.

Dark lyrical matter permeates throughout the record, as does black humour and the band’s gift for melody. From the power-pop rush of opener “Running From A Ghost”, through to the Malkmus-esque closer of “Mind Control”, there’s both variety and an almost endless slew of good ideas throughout. From the thick guitar tone that brings “All The Way Over The Edge” to life, to the melodic invention across “Blackout Cowboy” and “Meatloaf To The Camera”, there’s no let up across the record. And on “Mrs JR Hartley” the band even channel the neurotic energy of those early Weezer songs, in contrast to that most English of references in the song title.

Some bands hit their stride a few records in, and some bands hit it out of the park entirely: this is Sunshine Frisbee Laserbeam making a strong claim for the latter.

Sunshine Frisbee Laserbeam UK tour dates

02 Nov – The Lanes – Bristol
03 Nov – Sunflower Lounge – Birmingham
04 Nov – The Castle – Manchester
05 Nov – Wharf Chambers – Leeds
08 Nov – TBC – Cambridge
09 Nov – Rough Trade – Nottingham
11 Nov – Old Blue Last, London
