TOUR NEWS: The Church October/November 2018 dates

0
Broken Hands

In 2018, paisley underground pioneers – THE CHURCH – are enjoying a year of unique celebrations in honour of their seminal album: Starfish.

With the LP hitting the 30 year mark, the cherished Australian band behind classic singles ‘Under The Milky Way’ and ‘Reptile’ will be returning to the UK this Autumn for a series of special shows.

Landing in late October, the brief run of UK shows includes a handful of The Church headline gigs, as well appearances in support of kindred spirits Fields of the Nephilim as their very special guests.

Starfish 30th Anniversary Tour – 2018 UK Dates

Mon 29th Oct – Manchester O2 Ritz (with Fields Of The Nephilim)
Tues 30th Oct – Bristol The Fleece (The Church plus support from Rodney Allen)
Wed 31st Oct – London O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire (with Fields Of The Nephilim)
Thurs 1st Nov – Birmingham 02 Institute (with Fields Of The Nephilim)
Fri 2nd Nov – Edinburgh The Liquid Room (The Church only)

For these upcoming UK shows, the band will perform a selection of gems from the band’s career, which now spans an incredible 38 years and 26 albums.

What started out with a sold-out appearance at the Meltdown Festival in London on the personal invitation of curator, The Cure’s Robert Smith earlier this Summer, 2018 has been something of a landmark year for The Church. Multiple tours of the US and a warmly received string of dates in the UK earlier this year including a sold-out fan convention in Shepherds Bush (which witnessed the band perform their second album The Blurred Crusade in its entirety for the first time ever in this country), has made this a year to remember.

From there, the list of hits, band and fan favourites is long. Myrhh, which leader Steve Kilbey described in his memoir Something Quite Peculiar as the definitive Church song. Ripple, from the masterful Priest=Aura. Almost anything from 1982’s The Blurred Crusade.

Expect songs from Hologram of Baal, itself celebrating its 20th anniversary. And, of course, there’s The Unguarded Moment, the single that launched the band onto world stages on its release on its release in 1981.

But this is not just a nostalgia trip. The Church have been revitalised since 2014 with the addition of guitarist Ian Haug, formerly of another iconic Australian band, Powderfinger. Haug’s first outing with the band was on the acclaimed Further/Deeper, which yielded a new dynamic set-closer, the infinitely pyschedelic and earth shaking Miami.

Last year’s Man Woman Life Death Infinity strengthened the bond, cementing Haug’s place with long-time fans, as well as with the rest of the band: singer, bass player and songwriter Kilbey, fellow guitarist Peter Koppes and longtime drummer Tim Powles. “Ian is a big part of the band now,” Koppes says. “He’s a consummate, intuitive musician with fantastic tones.”

Koppes goes on to sum up the band. “Music is like inner space and we’re astronauts,” he says. It’s a spellbinding thing, it’s hypnotising. That’s why people like it. It takes them into another world and we’re here to open those doors.”

The Church’s strange journey remains an endless sea of possibilities. In 2018, it’s time for the band to celebrate one of their crowning glories, but always with an eye to the future. Further. Deeper. The Church truly are a rock band for the ages.

The Stranglers’ Back on the Tracks 19-date UK Tour kicks off in Belfast on 28th February culminating in what is bound to be another rousing finale in Manchester on Saturday 30th March.

During a hectic year of touring the Southern Hemisphere, Europe and the UK, The Stranglers have also been busy writing and rehearsing new material so audiences can expect to experience some of these new cuts, alongside classic favourites and lesser performed numbers drawn from their eloquent and extensive catalogue spanning over forty years.

First formed in 1974, the band’s no bullsh*t attitude was embraced by the punk movement of the late’70s, with their first three albums (Rattus Norvegicus, No More Heroes and Black And White) being released within an astonishing 13 months of each other, scoring hit singles such as Peaches, No More Heroes and Walk On By. Further success was to follow with Always The Sun, Strange Little Girl and the mercurial Golden Brown, amongst many others, earning the group 24 Top 40 singles and 18 Top 40 albums

Masters of their own highly original sound, that combines a brilliant melodic touch with dark aggression and effortless cool, The Stranglers are now recognised as one of the most credible and influential bands to have emerged from the punk era.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: William The Conqueror announce new album ‘Bleeding On The Soundtrack’, November 2018 dates

0

WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR announce new single and reveal the title of their forthcoming Ethan Johns produced album.

Memories make us who we are – they are the story of our lives – but we also find ways to deal with trauma by hiding from tough realities, and the hardest stories to tell are the ones we have to painstakingly piece together from the shards and splinters of long-buried memories… On their new single, William the Conqueror delve deep in to the darkest recesses, gathering clues to unravel a mystery of misplaced worship, adolescence, addiction and the road to recovery.

‘Bleeding on the Soundtrack’ is the first track to appear from their forthcoming album of the same name, recorded at Real World and produced by Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon, Laura Marling, The Jayhawks).

Laid down in one blistering take, the track builds from controlled intensity to an explosive climax as Naomi Holmes’ looping bass and Harry Harding’s powerhouse drums drive Ruarri Joseph’s vocals to deliver the soulful confessions of the song’s dramatic narrative.

“I was lucky enough to be in the room when this went down. All I had to do was sit and listen to an amazing band deliver an incredible take of an enviably honest, well written song.” Ethan Johns

EP REVIEW: Fizzy Blood – ‘Pink Magic’

0

The songs on Fizzy Blood’s new EP are perhaps not as immediate as the tracks on their last ‘Summer of Luv’. But that’s not a criticism, the fact that you have to listen that bit more closely means you hear the strength of the material that much better.

So, this EP contains two tracks that the band have released, two tracks that LSF didn’t, for some strange mysterious reason, review, so let’s get down to the review.

The EP title track ‘Pink Magic’ opens to synth throb and then a stomping hypnotic beat. And then there’s the vocals, vocals over that throb with of all things a sort of old school metal guitar stab. This thing rocks people. And those huge choruses just take you places you’re gonna love. This thing throws guitar at you, guitar that thrills, guitar that dares you to turn it way up. And it does this thing, it just changes and changes, one moment it’s all guitar heavy riff, the next it’s just voice over that throb. It’s the twists and turns that thrill.

‘CFO’ surprises you with that intro, it’s almost dance summer hit. And then the guitar roars in, guitar that is heavy, way heavy. But there’s a tune in this song, a tune that is just lovely. And that way heavy guitar and summer hit thing continues, sounds weird, works great.

And now to what has become my favourite track from the EP ‘Strangers’. After the heavy guitars of the first two tracks this is going to come as some surprise. It’s virtually classic pop-rock. It’s so so classy it hurts. It’s smoky, it’s keyboard heavy with this lovely bass thing thing going on. The thing with this track is, and I pulled this off on one of my friends, you could play it to someone you know and they’d swear blind it was some huge poppy rock track from the 80s, and then spend quite some time trying to remember the name of the band. But it’s not retro, it’s bang up to date. And it has this bit where is suddenly goes all post-punk for a bit, love that.

The closing track ‘Illusion’ has this sound which almost reminds me of early solo Robert Plant in places. It mixes keyboards and guitar. It has this ‘Kashmir’ thing going on. It soars. The vocals on this are wonderful. It’s epic.

The songs on this EP show there’s definitely a progression from their previous material, a progression you might describe as sounding more developed, and more sure. Yeah, there’s that throw a whole load of stuff into the mix thing that Fizzy Blood do but it’s subtle, it’s clever and it’s hugely absorbing. What results sure ain’t indie rock, it’s something else. What’s for sure is this is classy, that shines through.

TOUR & SINGLE NEWS: Sam Fender November 2018 dates, ‘Dead Boys’ out now

0

The fast-rising young Tyneside musician recently shared the moving video for Dead Boys, a devastating new track that laments the ever-growing global issue of male suicide. It is lifted from a forthcoming debut EP.

Sam Fender knows his way around a hook and a melody, and he combines them here with knowing words that reflect issues both pertinent and pressing. Acerbic and poised, Sam’s ever-present eye, ear and mind for social consciousness, political awareness, and delivered with his cavernous vocal should declare Sam Fender as the real deal.

Recently signed to Polydor Records, Dead Boys is Sam’s most powerful statement to date. Raw, both in its subject matter and in its delivery, this silent epidemic of male suicide grows louder by the week, and this extremely likeable, driven new voice brings the topic to the fore. Crucially, the song’s poignancy isn’t at the expense of a brilliant, belting tune. A song for the masses.

EP, SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Soeur Announce ‘FIGHT’ EP out 17th November, release new Single ‘FIGHT’, tour dates September – November 2018

0

Soeur showcase their abrasive side, announcing their tension-building new single ‘Fight’. The track focuses on the journey of blindly following something, questioning it, and wanting to fight against it.

“Following a conversation with an old friend, I was inspired to write about how he’d fallen in love with the idea of protecting his country but ultimately left the army despising what he was fighting for. Like many of our songs, it’s meaning transcends this particular situation”, explains guitarist and vocalist Tina.

Anya, who also shares guitar and frontperson duties, continues “I think it’s easy to accept what we are taught, but it is only by questioning it that we truly learn. Whether it’s a war, an abusive relationship, a mental illness or a society-instilled stereotype, this song reminds us that we have the power not only to stop fuelling the cause but to actively fight against it”

Fight follows previous single ‘Track Back’. Both will feature on Soeur’s forthcoming EP Fight, which will be self-released on 17th November.

Produced by Mat Sampson in Bristol’s Bink Bonk studio, the EP captures Soeur’s genre-defying and overwhelming range, from stomping alt-rock as seen in Out Again, to the grungey, PJ Harvey undertones captured in Quiet It, or the emotive and heartfelt Whole Me. Musically Soeur are far from formulaic, the only consistency being the flawless dual vocal between Tina and Anya which intertwines throughout the EP.

“The songs are all, in some sense, about post-traumatic growth. I think wherever there’s personal growth, there’s always some sort of fight involved. People often project the best of themselves (especially on social media), giving us all the illusion that nobody else is struggling, when in reality, we all endure our own battles every day. The title, for me, is both a reminder that we have the strength to fight those battles and an acknowledgement that the fight itself is a fundamental part of change”
– Anya, vocals & guitars

FIGHT Track Listing
1. Quiet It
2. Track Back
3. Whole Me
4. Out Again
5. Fight

The artwork for Fight takes influence from the Japanese art form ‘Kintsugi’, which consists of shattered objects being repaired using gold glue. Anya explains, “We loved the concept that the aftermath of destruction can lead to the creation of something more beautiful. I certainly feel that in a lot of ways, my emotional scars have made me a better person. I believe we are not so much defined by the way we break as we are the way we choose to put ourselves back together”

VIDEO, ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Novo Amor video for single ‘Utican’, debut album out 19th October, October 2018 tour

0

NOVO AMOR has unveiled the official video for his new single ‘Utican’. The track is the latest to be taken from his forthcoming debut album ‘Birthplace’, to be released on 19th October via AllPoints.

Much like the video for the album’s title track – which seeks to address the monolithic problem of plastic in our oceans and was awarded Independent Video of the Year at the AIM Awards earlier this week – the storyline for the ‘Utican’ video also centres on a topical and emotional issue, befitting of the cinematic nature of Novo Amor’s music.

Speaking about the ‘Utican’ video concept in more detail, director Ethan Graham shares: “It’s a culmination of meanings – from a young boy’s realisation of looming adulthood and sexuality, to he and his father coming to terms with the loss of his mother.”

“His memory of her is slowly deteriorating and the only way he can hold onto this is by wearing her dresses and applying her make-up the way she used to when he was
a little boy.”

“It’s an emotive coming-of-age story that nurtures a masculine relationship in a beautifully delicate way.”

Expanding on the thoughts behind the song itself, Novo Amor shares: “Musically, Utican represents a proud, celebratory realisation that you don’t need something in your life. You are no longer a resident of your past.”

“The name ‘Utican’ refers to the idea of becoming a resident of Utica, a place in which I’ve spent a fair bit of time and started to feel at home. Utica is more of a metaphor for that time of my life, rather than the actual place.”

Working from this home studio, Novo Amor – the moniker of Welsh singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist Ali Lacey – has received acclaim for a catalogue of beautiful and melancholic songs which have the ability to effortlessly transport the listener to another realm. On ‘Birthplace’, the sounds of his home bleed in – the distant chatter of a party across the street, Bonfire Night fireworks, the seagulls that congregate on the building site next door. Even the sound of the late-night recording hours Lacey kept to avoid the sounds of construction seem to make their presence felt: “I think there’s something calming about working at night,” he says. “You can focus on smaller details and sounds.”

Marking the release of his debut album, Novo Amor will embark on a full band tour of the UK, mainland Europe, and North America throughout October and November. As a follow on from the issues raised in the ‘Birthplace’ video, Lacey has teamed up with two UK charities – Julie’s Bicycle and Energy Revolution – to limit the environmental impact of his shows. The aim of working with these charities is to minimise waste at shows and balance fuel consumption & Co2 emissions. A self-applied ‘pollution tax’ will be used to generate clean, renewable energy through projects such as wind power generation and reforestation in India.
