TOUR NEWS: Swervedriver announce 25 year anniversary shows for ‘Mezcal Head’

0

To celebrate 25 years since the release of SWERVEDRIVER’s classic second album ‘Mezcal Head’, the band will be performing the record live for the first time throughout Europe and the UK in May 2018. But more than that, the band – comprising Adam Franklin, Jimmy Hartridge, Mikey Jones and Ben Ellis from Iggy Pop’s band (standing in for the on-sabbatical Mick Quinn) – will also be performing the band’s first album, the seminal ‘Raise’. Their show will comprise of two sets with psychedelia interlude.

Swervedriver’s six album, ‘Remembering Forward’, is set to be released later in 2018

14th May – Hebden Bridge – The Trades Club
15th May Newcastle – 02
16th May Glasgow – ABC2
17th May Manchester – Band On The Wall
18th May London – Islington Academy
19th May Leicester – Dryden Street Social

In 1990 London’s indie-rock guitar scene was developing a distinctive new psychedelic sound: swirling, dreamy, mysterious and very much of the British Isles. One band stood out by hot-wiring that sound with the subversive energy of some American bands of the era and that band was Swervedriver. They had the liquid distortion of shoegaze combined with the cool swagger of Hüsker Dü, Sonic Youth, and Dinosaur Jr – giving them a unique sound and attitude.

Relocating from Oxford to London, guitarists Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge, bassist Adi Vines and drummer Graham Bonnar debuted with a series of landmark Creation Records EPs, Son of Mustang Ford, Rave Down, and Sandblasted. Their full-length debut, 1991’s Raise, to this day is hailed by Pitchfork as an album full of “muscular, scorching guitars” that “still bring the noise like nobody’s business” with Mojo stating that Son of Mustang Ford “remains one of the most glorious tunes to emerge in the wake of the so-called grunge explosion of ’89, matching Adam Franklin and Jim Hartridge’s motorised guitar-weaving with a beguiling, below-the-line vocal melody and lyrics that celebrated the joy of wide-open American freeways.”

The band toured the album extensively, including a lengthy US tour with Soundgarden that brought their wall of sound to thousands. However with both Bonnar and Vines leaving the band not long after, the 1992 EP Never Lose That Feeling looked like it might be Swervedriver’s (albeit scorching) swan song. Then in late 1992, Franklin and Hartridge demoed a new tune Duress, recruited drummer Jez Hindmarsh and set about recording a second full-length album Mezcal Head with Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine/Led Zeppelin), which included their biggest singles Duel and Last Train To Satansville. Touring extensively again, this time with Smashing Pumpkins and Medicine and with new bass player Steve George onboard, their sound was further imprinted on people’s minds.

More roadblocks came to be in their way though: highly revered third album Ejector Seat Reservation came out in 1995 but was never released or toured in the US and although the band returned strongly with their fourth full-length 1998’s 99th Dream, the energy was dissipating and they imploded at the end of an Australian tour resolving to go on hiatus.

Going their separate ways – Franklin moved to the US and released solo albums with his band Bolts of Melody – no-one really knew if the band actually was on hiatus or had split entirely. Then came an announcement in late 2007 that they would be performing at the following year’s Coachella and heading back out on the road. Originally reforming with Hindmarsh on drums followed briefly by the return of Bonnar, they finally settled on Mikey Jones of Heaven and Bolts of Melody and have continued touring and appearing at festivals internationally.

In 2013 everything was ratcheted up several notches when Swervedriver released its first single in 15 years, Deep Wound. Spin Magazine called it a “warm, confidently roiling return” with Mojo adding “those same distorted pop sensibilities remain reassuringly intact” and the band debuted the song on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” in the States.

Their fifth album I Wasn’t Born To Lose You, recorded at legendary studios Birdland in Melbourne, and Konk in London was released worldwide in March of 2015.

VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: Sunflower Bean drop ‘Twenty-Two’, UK dates start 23rd March 2018

0

New York trio Sunflower Bean (Julia Cumming, Jacob Faber, Nick Kivlen) will release their second album in a few weeks, and they have share an incredible, pageant-themed music video for their latest single “Twentytwo,” a song with a powerful and enduring message about resilience and pushing back against expectations.

Director Olivia Bee explains: “I loved metaphorically speaking about the reality of being a woman, but letting that reality exist whilst tapping into the magical blues of Twentytwo in Blue. This song showcases our strengths and individual beauties when we remove the masks that have been given to us by our society, and I wanted the video to reflect that.”

Sunflower Bean will release Twentytwo in Blue on March 23rd – when all members of the band will be 22 years old – and comes almost two years and two months after the release of their critically acclaimed 2016 debut album Human Ceremony. Co-produced by Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jacob Portrait (who also mixed the record) and HC-producer Matt Molnar of Friends, Twentytwo in Blue shows Sunflower Bean stay true to their guitar band core and classic rock-inspired roots, while exploring new sonic textures with more direct and progressive themes. Unlike their debut, which was essentially a compilation of songs Sunflower Bean wrote while still in their teens, Twentytwo in Blue was made in the year between December 2016 and December 2017 and showcases how far the band has come since playing together in their high school days. Pre-order Twentytwo in Blue HERE.

FESTIVAL NEWS: Tramlines Festival Announces Second Wave of Acts for 10th Edition

0

Once again proving itself to be a musical feast, Tramlines Festival today announces a second wave of acts to play its celebratory 10th edition, including Clean Bandit, Mystery Jets, Rat Boy, Milburn, Everything Everything, Shed Seven, The Big Moon, Nina Nesbitt, Lewis Capaldi, Fickle Friends, High Hazels and Oddity Road.

Taking place at the new location of Hillsborough Park in Sheffield from Friday 20th – Sunday 22nd July 2018, the worlds of indie, rock and roll, garage, rap, pop and hip hop all collide when these acts join the previously announced headliners Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Craig David’s TS5, plus Blossoms, De La Soul, Jake Bugg, Reverend And The Makers, Stefflon Don, The Sherlocks, Mabel, and tons more in its biggest lineup yet.

This special installment of Tramlines comes with more festival-style entertainment than ever over four stages including a comedy lineup, pop up cinema, family area, and a brand new Leadmill Stage. The whole of Sheffield will be in party mode when they come together for this momentous version of Tramlines.

The first announcement saw Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Craig David’s TS5, Blossoms, De La Soul, Jake Bugg, Reverend and The Makers, Stefflon Don, The Sherlocks, Mabel, The Magic Gang, Coasts, Pale Waves, Gengahr, Naaz, Mullally, and Stereo Honey all announced. With today’s announcement plus many more to come, Tramlines stays true to its roots of showcasing the internationally acclaimed alongside the hottest breaking talent. It also remains seriously good value for money. Whilst tickets are selling out fast, weekend tickets now cost £69 plus booking fee and are available from www.tramlines.org.uk.

Headlining Stage 2 on Saturday are multi-million record selling chart toppers, Clean Bandit. Few acts have risen through the ranks as quickly as this three-piece, mixing dance music with classical in rousing new ways. From hits like ‘Rather Be’ to ‘Rockabye’ to ‘Symphony’, their crossover style is a favourite at festivals around the world and guaranteed to be a winner at Tramlines.

Tramlines is thrilled to announce that the Mystery Jets will headline the Leadmill Stage on Friday night. The standout British band whose fusion of indie rock, post-punk, psychedelia and prog has made them firm favourites over the course of six albums and more recent singles like ‘Bubblegum’ as well as classics such as ‘The Boy Who Ran Away.’ Then headlining the Leadmill Stage on Saturday are livewires Rat Boy who’ll be bringing more than just guitar music to Tramlines with their raucous live show and on-stage chemistry. Expect tracks from their debut album ‘Scum’ that the band brought to fruition with a little help from Blurs’ Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon.

Back to the festival opening on Friday, experimental Manchester outfit, Everything Everything, will now join Stereophonics on the Main Stage. Coming off the back of their biggest and best album yet in 2017’s ‘A Fever Dream’, which was shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize and received three nominations for the Ivor Novello Award, the band are set to put on a dynamic and energetic show at Tramlines.

Also amongst the latest additions are local heroes Milburn in a not-to-be-missed appearance. Since reforming a couple of years back, the band have enjoyed an incredible couple of years, and have told festival organisers that this will be their “last show for a long time”! Support comes from indie innovators, The Big Moon, who return to Tramlines after a killer performance in 2017.

Influential live outfit Shed Seven will play Stage 2 on Sunday and will demonstrate just why they helped shape the sound of Britpop in the 90’s. Just last year, the York outfit continued to lead from the front with their Top 10 album ‘Instant Pleasures’, which mixed melancholy with uplifting albums to great acclaim.

Completing this latest wave of names are emerging talents, Nina Nesbitt, Lewis Capaldi, Fickle Friends, High Hazels, and Oddity Road. Each embodying a unique sound and youthful energy, they are just some of the acts who are set to make a well-deserved mark on the scene in 2018.

As one of UK’s most popular inner-city music festivals, Tramlines’ new home is just 13 minutes from the city centre by tram, meaning it stays connected to the plethora of fringe activities happening all over town. The tenth Tramlines has an expanded site to host even more music lovers and to offer a wider range of world class and new talent performances alongside more great entertainment than ever before.

With more acts yet to be announced for the 10th year, follow Tramlines on social to get the latest updates as they happen. Follow Tramlines on social ‘@tramlines’ or visit www.tramlines.org.uk.

SINGLE REVIEW: LELO – ‘Breathing’

0

Let’s call it Dream-Pop, that’s the closest I can come to describing LELO’s new single ‘Breathing’. It’s lush, it’s layered, it’s bloody hypnotic.

Digging a bit deeper, at least for me I get hints of say Tears For Fears, The Dream Academy, that sort of atmospheric 80s pop. And yes, in that lushness there is a hint of psych. But, and it’s a big but, this ain’t no retro-fest. It’s way up to date.

This song washes over you until you’re submerged and it’s too late to get out. There’s no quiet/loud, nothing overly dramatic, it’s just quietly fabulous. There is delicately plucked guitar, washes of sound and a sparse drum track. And those vocals, they are just calm and measured, drawing you into the song. What I found is that even though there’s a hell of lot going on soundwise, actually the whole sounds like there’s an enormous amount of empty space. Really nice.

LELO tells us that “the song identifies and acknowledges the struggles so many people face; understanding oneself, and making sense of the world around us. it makes reference to the relief we experience once we realise what it is in fact that we could, should, or want to be doing with our limited, somewhat pointless time we have here”. While this made me start thinking that most of what of I do is ‘somewhat pointless’ (perhaps including writing reviews), what it pointed up was that perhaps we should all be living in the moment – just take a moment and breath people – and just do what we like doing.

‘Breathing’ is really rather fabulous, it’s a moment of beautiful calm. And we all need moments of calm in our lives. This should be the soundtrack to those moments.

The track was written, performed and co-produced by solo musician Ronan Peaker, (LELO), and produced by Mickey Dale of Embrace.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Avalanche Party release ‘PORCELAIN’ Ahead Of This Feeling UK Tour In March/April 2018

0

“I’ll redefine your notion of the best a man can be” is the mission statement of rising Yorkshire band Avalanche Party, who have released new single ‘Porcelain’ on Clue Records.

“Porcelain is what The Coasters would have sounded like if they had taken slightly more crack. 1950’s benzo-psychosis of the worst kind. If it seems a good idea at the time then it probably is, hence this song of degradation, food, notions and gardens”

‘Porcelain is released digitally’, and also on 12” limited edition blood red vinyl alongside three other tracks.

Buy here: https://www.musicglue.com/cluerecords/

Avalanche Party were formed by brothers Jordan and Joe, who spent summers in their youth in the Yorkshire dales, camping by firelight, and their winters snowed into their isolated hill top home with nothing but the sounds of Bo Diddley, Link Wray, Wilko Johnson and Jimi Hendrix to keep them company. The boys played their first gig at the age of twelve, and music is ingrained in their being.

The band are now gearing up to headline the This Feeling tour throughout the UK this March/April, and will also play Electric Fields Festival. Further live dates will be announced soon.

ABOUT HANDMADE FESTIVAL:

Handmade is a multi-venue music and arts festival in the city of Leicester. The festival, which is totally independent, is curated by some of the city’s best loved independent venues and promoters, all of whom have been involved in putting on events for decades, working tirelessly to bring great things to Leicester.

Since its inception in 2013, Handmade Festival has gone from strength-to-strength, and has consistently challenged people’s expectations of what a local independent DIY festival can be, and what it can offer in the city. In its first year Handmade took over reclaimed spaces – including an ex-library, the city’s historic guildhall, a church and some of the oldest buildings in the city.

For its sophomore year, the event grew to include the huge Hansom Hall theatre, before growing again in 2015, necessitating a move to the city’s O2 Academy venue filling the spectacular Queens Hall, Scholar and multiple re-purposed spaces around the building. The event saw festival organisers vindicated – creating the perfect “DIY” festival within what would normally be considered a particularly “un DIY” venue. It was a different beast, but it was the perfect festival for the city.

2016 saw the festival strike up partnerships with tastemakers such as Upset, Dork, Last.fm, Witchita Records as well as both PPL and PRS to help curate their estimable line-up, Last year’s line-up also saw the festival utilise iconic venues around the city, which included two stages that featured guest line-up curation from Drowned in Sound and ‘Leicester folk hero’ Grace Petrie.

In 2018 Handmade will be filling all of O2 Academy Leicester’s venues as well as spaces within University of Leicester Students Union and Attenborough Arts Centre making it the festival’s biggest event to date.

Speaking about this year’s festival, co-organiser John Helps, says “This year’s line-up is a big step up for Handmade and an important one for us to take. We want this year’s festival to challenge people’s expectations of what Handmade can be and what we can do with a “DIY” city festival. We hope people are just as excited about it as we are.”

Over the past 5 years, the festival has seen sets from artists such as: Frightened Rabbit, Twin Atlantic, British Sea Power, IDLES, Pulled Apart By Horses, Deaf Havana, We Are Scientists, 65daysofstatic, Swim Deep, Los Campesinos, Dry the River, Dutch Uncles, Slaves, Bo Ningen, And So I Watch You From Afar, Shonen Knife, Eagulls, Honeyblood, Iliketrains, Rolo Tomassi, Nine Black Alps, Three Trapped Tigers, The Twilight Sad, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Sam Duckworth, Johnny Foreigner, Tangled Hair, Tellison Sky Larkin, Sulk, Maybeshewill, Kagoule, Jaws, Shame, Goat Girl, HMLTD, Happyness, Haus and Her Name Is Calla, with comedy performances from Robin Ince, Rob Deering, James Acaster and many more.

The festivals incredibly diverse line-up and has earned them plaudits from the likes of Kerrang!, NME, Drowned in Sound, DIY, The Line Of Best Fit, Louder Than War, Q, GQ, Clash and many more.

LIVE REVIEW: Antony and Friends, Central Methodist Church Todmorden, 24th February 2018

0

These concerts usually feature one or two players beside Antony Brannick himself, but this time we got Carisse White and Jenny Sheldon on flute, Diana Doherty and Karen Gordon on oboe, Rachael Gibbon and Tamsin Curror on clarinet, Diana Monahan and Ben Hardy on bassoon, and David Robinson on contrabassoon. Add on David Leys on cello, Kate Findlay on double bass, and Deborah Allon, Nick Barber, John Page and Jenny Nicks on French horn and you get “Ensemble Amici d’Antony”.

The concert opened with Richard Strauss’s dramatic Serenade for thirteen wind instruments (in E flat major, op 7). David Leys ably soloed in JS Bach’s tranquil and melodious prelude from suite no 2 for solo cello (in D minor). Antony gave us a spirited performance of Claude Debussy’s piano piece “Jardin sous la pluie” (Garden in the rain). The four French horns played first C M von Weber’s lively “Der Freischutz Fantasie-Quartette” (fantasy quartet based on the opera ‘The Marksman’) arranged by A E Harris. The horns gave a hunting atmosphere (why is music about hunting generally so jolly?). Then they concluded the first half with Lowell E Shaw’s jazzy “Frippery no 4”.

After the first half came my favourite piece of the evening, including nearly all the musicians, Anton Dvorak’s Serenade for Wind instruments (op 44). This started with a lovely stately tune, moved on through lively and flowing sections, and ended with a return to early themes.

The next Antony concert is on 24 March, Todmorden Central Methodist Church, at 7.30 pm, featuring Beethoven and Brahms.
