EP REVIEW: MUFFIN – ‘MUFFIN’

0

I have started writing this review three or four times but I just couldn’t quite put into words how this left me feeling after listening to the whole EP a few times. The problem is that there is something rather unsettling about MUFFIN’s debut EP, or rather I should say disturbing, both musically and lyrically. This doesn’t mean that it’s something you might not want to listen to, it’s just that it’s not an easy listen. The band did, to be honest, point the way with the single release ‘Welcome To The Modern Age’ which I reviewed a little while back but taken as as one whole hit the EP left me feeling – let’s say – feeling somewhat concerned about the band’s state of mind. But we live in troubled times and art, and that includes music, should reflect that.

So why this is musically disturbing. All of the tracks have these odd off-kilter sounds, frankly startling guitar, or these warped and strange drop-outs, or unexpected tempo changes, or just weird little bits of vocals. So listening to the EP isn’t easy, you need to really listen. A little attention is going to give you huge rewards. And once you’ve done that frankly you can go back and just fucking rock out, because they work on that level as well.

Lyrically the words are important in these songs. This is ‘heavy’ music and I mean heavy in the sense of thoughtful and important. And yes, the music is heavy but there’s light and shade. The way these tracks are put together is, to say the least, impressive. MUFFIN can really play, the vocals are fantastic. What’s going to stand out, at least the first couple of listens, is the guitar. The guitar grinds, it squeals, no sound is left unused but it all hangs together. And then, at least for me, I started to really take notice of the drumming, bloody hell, this is great.

So the EP opens with ‘Miss Direction’, its ominous start is really going to set you up for the EP. And oh boy do I love the cymbal fill (look I like stuff like that, I’m not going to apologise). And then yep there’s a bit of quiet loud alt rock, but wait it’s going to drop-out and then wind-up, but wind-up slowly in fits and starts, and then there is guitar, guitar that screams.

So you might think you have the measure of MUFFIN but nothing – if my review didn’t make you go and listen to it of course – is going to prepare you for ‘Welcome To The Modern Age’. This is drama. So yes, it might start like an alt-rock track BUT then what the bloody hell is going on, it rocks, it rocks hard, and then it suddenly all drops out and it’s spooky. It grinds, it grinds hard, it grinds like Black Sabbath on drugs. The vocals scream. It is nothing less than brilliant.

Quite what ‘Filter Me’ is about I have yet to get a handle on, I think I do then it slips away. It’s not a ‘happy song’, there’s ‘obsession that won’t me let free’, and ‘she’s just a child’. It’s disturbing, and not just because I can’t work out what the hell the song is about. There are spooky bits, loud bits, there are frankly beautiful bits. The vocals positively ooze angst. It is a wonderful thing, even if I don’t know what it’s about.

‘False Profits’ (see what they did there) is one of those tracks that just doesn’t settle into any one particular style, and that makes it very unsettling. You’re just getting into it, and then it veers off into something else. It sounds, and I mean this as a huge compliment, at the start like a System Of A Down track, it’s quiet loud but heavy quiet loud, way heavy. And then this guitar creeps in, a guitar sound I have become obsessed with. It’s like a mutant Carlos Santana sound.

There appears to be a theme running through the four tracks, a theme summed up in the title of the lead single ‘Welcome To The Modern Age’. The songs appear to reflect certain aspects of ‘The Modern Age’ – musically if not lyrically. We live in disconcerting, disturbing and unsettling times people, this is music for those times.

The point of a review, I guess, is to try and tell you whether you should get the thing being reviewed. So should you listen to, and actually get MUFFIN’s EP. Yes, emphatically yes. This isn’t easy music, it’s music that you need to actually listen to properly, it’s difficult and complex. But that makes it more rewarding, it means you can listen, and listen again, and then listen again without getting everything that’s going on. It is a many layered thing.

These songs are the sound of a band making their own music and doing it brilliantly.

ARTIST NEWS: Mica Miller releases ‘The Defender’ 4th April, Defender Campaign, tour dates April 2018

0

Tipped as “One of the best vocalists in the UK” by BBC Introducing and as an “Artist to watch in 2018” on BBC Radio 2 last month, Soul powerhouse MICA MILLAR launches The Defender Campaign ahead of the single’s official release on 4th April 2018 (you can preview the single here https://open.spotify.com/album/3L92lFJsX615nDmNBJl0U7).

Composed, arranged and produced by Mica with additional production contributions from Drum & Bass pioneer Goldie (MBE) and James Davidson (together known as Subjective), the hard-hitting third single is released as part of a campaign launching on International Women’s Day to celebrate societal heroes and raise awareness of social and cultural issues. Collaborating with Director Simon Brooks, Producer Dan Jackson (ITV), Art Director Gian Grainger and Producer Karen Gabay (BBC/ITV) the unique and innovate concept is sighted by Mica as being “born out of the song’s narrative and title” which inspired her to explore true stories of altruism and empathy and incorporate them into the songs official music video. A call was published on social media and eventually the stories Mica received, were narrowed down to just two.

On the 8th and 15th March the individuals will share their experiences with the rest of the word though video’s shared on Mica Millar’s social media profiles. The first, a harrowing tale of a woman who was kidnapped by her father at the age of seven and, through the altruistic actions of a stranger, was finally reunited with her mother after almost a decade of separation. The second, the story of a violent attack on a man in Manchester and the unlikely people who came to his aid. Mica is now calling for members of the public who have been saved or helped by a stranger to share their stories online using the hashtag #thedefendercampaign. Two further stories will then be chosen to feature in both the music video and an accompanying behind-the-scenes documentary that will follow later this year.

Performing The Defender alongside exclusive, unreleased material from her forthcoming album as well as previous releases “My Lover” and “Not The First”, Mica’s UK single launch shows will take place at Band on The Wall, Manchester on 4th April, Leaf on Bold Street, Liverpool on 8th April and The Wardrobe, Leeds on 10th April. The events will see Mica perform live with a string duo and all female backing vocal trio who form one half of of her extensive ten-piece line up. Mica will also perform a pre-tour iluvlive showcase at Zigfrid Von Underbelly, London on 12th March.

0

The British rock heroes – fronted by Grant Nicholas and Taka Hirose will top the bill, taking to the main stage for a free show in Rochdale Town Hall Square on Saturday 18 August.

Feeder shot to fame with their debut EP ‘Swim’ in 1996 and since then have accumulated 20 top 40 singles, eight top ten albums and sold over five million records, including three platinum and two gold albums. They’ve played sold-out tours, headlined festivals across Europe and already spent 181 weeks in the singles and album charts.

Famed for their exhilarating and celebratory music, hits including ‘Just The Way I’m Feeling’, ‘Buck Rogers’, ‘Feeling a Moment,’ ‘Tumble and Fall’, ‘Seven Days in the Sun’, ‘High’, ‘Just a Day’, ‘Shatter’ ‘Come Back Around, ’Pushing the Senses’, and ‘Lost & Found’ are just some of the singles the band have enjoyed over their 21 year recording career. Last year ‘The Best of Feeder’ album hit the top ten and this month they kick off their biggest ever sold out UK tour.

Rochdale Feel Good Festival is back on Saturday 18 August, for another showcase of top class entertainment, food and culture. There will be live music across indoor venues, a main stage against the backdrop of the town hall, a quality food and drink court plus family entertainment.

Councillor Janet Emsley cabinet member for neighbourhoods, community and culture at Rochdale Borough Council said: “Each year this festival has exceeded what I thought was possible and 2018 is going to be bigger than ever, with Feeder – one of the best British rock bands of the last two decades headlining. We have another very exciting music announcement later this month. We hope thousands will join us once again to make this another year to remember.”

Ben Boothman, owner of main stage sponsor The Flying Horse Hotel said: “To have Brit rock legends Feeder playing our main stage is a coup for Rochdale. I’ve been a fan since the Echo Park album back in 2001 and they’ve produced some of the most popular and recognisable tracks in British rock. Their live shows are amazing and I can’t wait to see them at Rochdale Feel Good Festival this August.”

SINGLE REVIEW: Birds and Beasts – ‘The Current’

0

I wasn’t expecting to like this quite as much as I do. Look I read the blurb from the band and sounded kinda strange and even plain weird. OK so in common with Birds and Beasts’ other songs this takes an ‘animal based idea’; they say that it’s about how sharks use their electric super-powers to locate food and friends, and that it is “a romantic song of devotion and perseverance that is easy to relate to”. I’m not entirely sure that helps if I’m honest, I’m not entirely sure I get it being romantic.

But the song itself is a hoot, good time sort of country/blues based psychedelia with some frankly out there guitar going on. Actually the more I listen to this thing the more it sounds like some sort of mutant B-52’s track. It’s in those ‘oh so mannered vocals’ and the frankly groovy sound. And those backing vocals. It is strangely addictive, I found myself listening way more times than I actually needed to. And at one point I felt moved to throw some way out there shapes round the living room of LSF Towers – this is music you can dance to, dance madly.

Look as much as the concept might be perhaps strange, the music is great, it’s music that you can wig out to. It’s music that makes you smile. Music that I could imagine just throwing myself round a venue to, with a huge grin on my face. Although I hear voices saying ‘but Frank you like strange stuff, what about us?’. Well come on people we all need to hear music that makes us smile at times, don’t we? We all need music that is just fun.

So, put your inhibitions to one side, get on your dancing shoes, and throw some out there shapes. AND JUST HAVE SOME FUN.

The single will be launched with a fancy dress party and show at Small Seeds in Huddersfield on the 9th March.

The info

Imagine a parallel universe where David Attenborough left the BBC in the 60s and shared his love of the natural world by starting a psychedelic rock band. With an instinct for memorable pop music, this is a band spreading its wings and evolving fast.

A simple concept underpins Birds and Beasts; all their songs are inspired by animals but reflect our human lives, hopes and dreams. It has proved to be an idea that resonates with people and they have been quick to build a fan-base in their hometown but now have big ambitions to evolve further and spread their wings to a wider audience.

CAMPAIGN NEWS: FIGHTBACK: GRASSROOTS PROMOTER – a new initiative from Music Planet Live and Music Venue Trust

0

Music Venue Trust and Music Planet Live have announced a major new partnership to reinvigorate and diversify the grassroots music scene in the UK. Fightback: Grassroots Promoter is a £100,000 intervention aimed at young women who are passionate about live music and want to learn the skills to become an independent promoter.

FB: GP will make £100,000 in subsidy guarantees available to underwrite 100 Fightback fundraising shows at Grassroots Music Venues promoted by the next generation of young, female, independent promoters

Under 25s who want to promote a show are often put off by the risk or the lack of information about who to speak to, how to get the best deal, or what connections they need. At the same time, Grassroots Music Venues are crying out for new young promoters with fresh ideas. Add into that mix, a lack of diversity in the music industry and it adds up to a series of barriers to young women taking up promoting and adding their unique voice and ideas to the grassroots scene.

MVT and MPL want to change all that with a specific initiative aimed at enabling 100 young female promoters to put on a show at their local Music Venues Alliance member Grassroots Music Venue. FB: GP offers a no-risk financial entry point for young women to take their first step in promoting or develop their promoting skills.

Beverley Whitrick of MVT says: “We want to make a big change to the independent promoter scene in the UK, enabling 100 young women to take a chance on promoting a show they believe in. With their support, we are not only going to raise money for Music Venue Trust, we are going to start the process of identifying the next wave of fantastic new independent promoters and tackle head-on diversity in this sector. There’s not enough female promoters working in grassroots music venues, and we’re going to change that.”

MVT Toolkit:

MVT will supply a toolkit and the contacts these young women need to put on a show. The scheme will match each young promoter with music industry experts who have experience of every aspect of delivering a successful event, professionals who will mentor them through the process. The package of support includes:

  • A Gig-In-A-Box – everything you need to know about how to book, manage and promote a show
  • Support from local Grassroots Music Venues, with leading promoters and music industry professional acting as mentors

A national campaign that supports a local event

Music Planet Live will underwrite the costs on each show to a total value of £1000, giving young promoters the chance to focus on getting it right, creating a great event, and getting the crowd needed without just worrying about the money. Participants in the programme can apply for up to £500 in cash up front to cover any deposits, promotional costs, catering etc. At the end of the show, MVT will create a financial settlement and settle all subsidies and costs. Profits from Fightback shows directly help to keep venues open through the Emergency Response service, bringing an ethical edge to this initiative.

We have created a vigorous process of enrolment and checks along the way to ensure this programme succeeds and that young people get the most from it. We have a major marketing campaign lined up to support the project. We need your help to ensure it succeeds.

How people can get involved

We want to build a coalition of partners to support this initiative:

Local and National Promoters:

50 established promoters drawn from across the industry at all levels and prepared to mentor young people.

Minimum level of commitment required: You will mentor two individuals, providing up to 2 hours of phone or meeting consultation to each as required, supporting the creation of a plan, and providing basic feedback by email. We particularly want to identify role models; successful female promoters. Use of your logo on promotional materials. Supporting quote from a nominated mentor.

Educational Organisations:

Support from educational partners working in music industry courses to identify 100 young women who can support them to make the most of this opportunity.

Minimum level of commitment: Promoting the opportunity to students, specifically identifying young women who have a special interest in working in the live music industry. Supporting students to bring together a coherent plan, including making introductions to experienced industry professionals with relevant skills. Supporting the actual shows themselves so that students have a good chance of delivering a successful event. Use of your logo on promotional materials.

Other Industry Bodies:

They want this initiative to be supported right across the industry and invite you to bring them your own ideas or propose additionality, including financial support.

Minimum level of commitment: Quote in support of the initiative. Use of your social media to promote the opportunity. Support for individual shows where appropriate. Use of logos on promotional materials.
