SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Calum Scott with Leona Lewis ‘You Are The Reason’ out now, Calum tours April 2018

0

Calum Scott is joined by vocal powerhouse and 3-time Grammy nominee Leona Lewis on a stirring rendition of his hit single, ‘You Are The Reason.’ Listen HERE.

“Working with Leona was a dream come true,” says Calum. “As a fan, I first remember watching her on TV before going on to grace the globe with her incredibly beautiful voice. Now having the honour of working with her on one of my own songs is completely surreal and the passion and raw emotion she brings to our duet makes it even more special to me. I can still hardly believe that we did it!”

Leona adds “I remember the day Calum sent me this track, I sat listening at home and had it on repeat. It’s one of those powerful songs that touches your heart and such a beautiful ballad, everyone knows I love singing them! Calum’s performance on it is stunning and I loved being able to join him to make this duet version.”

TOUR NEWS: Ohm From Ohm Tour

0

The tour features the acerbic, indietronica stylings of Rodney Cromwell, the brooding, electro-cabaret sounds of The Frixion, the soaring dark electronic anthems of Nature of Wires and the immersive audio-visual spectacular that is Vieon, all combining to present an eclectic and energising mix of electronic music which is sure to entertain. If you are a lover of electronic pop, from the coldwave of Gary Numan through to the spectacle of Jean-Michel Jarre, then this is the perfect gig for you.

Rodney Cromwell

Combining vintage analogue synths, an indiepop sensibility and acerbic wit, Rodney Cromwell evokes the synthpop sound of the past while still sounding forward-looking and fresh. From Catford, Rodney Cromwell is the project of Adam Cresswell, founding member of John Peel favourites SALOON & acclaimed electronic two-piece ARTHUR & MARTHA.

He has been featured by BBC6 Music, RNE3, Electronic Sound Mag, Huffington Post, Electricity Club & more.

The Frixion

Singer and lyricist Gene Serene emerged from Berlin’s hedonistic club scene. Synthesist and producer Lloyd Price is best known as a collaborator of SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK’s Martin Degville and a member of MASSIVE EGO.

Together as The Frixion their sound mines both classic synthpop and Weimar Cabaret to make a unique and engaging soundscape.

Nature of Wires

Nature of Wires from Herefordshire formed in ’86 and until ’94 Andrew Stirling-Brown (vocals) & Gary Watts (synths) toured and released music with a melodic and muscular take on the synthpop sound.

A six month break lasted 20 years before their love for music was rekindled. Collaborating with Californian vocalist CountessM they produced their first LP for 23 years “Cyber Rendezvous”. In 2016 Tim Powell-Tuck joined the band on drums.

Vieon

Conceived in 2009 in a box room in Coventry, Vieon is the brainchild of synth wizard Matt Wild. Influenced by pioneers such as Jean-Michel Jarre & filtered through the soundscapes of 80s electronic film scores, Vieon blend the sounds of the analogue past and dystopian future with synth hooks and epic solos to create evolving, emotive, spacey electronic music. Live Vieon create a distinctive, immersive and engaging audio-visual experience that’s not to be missed.

SINGLE REVIEW: Obez – ‘They Don’t Know Me’

0

There is, as they say, a first time for everything; and this is the first time I’ve reviewed a single by a grime artist. So my way in, and the reason I said yes to reviewing it, is the sounds (produced by Bolus). This track has the most infectious groove people, but it’s the little touches that make it spring into life, make you sit up and listen.

And the words are positive, they’re about getting what you aim for. In fact after reading about Obez and exchanging emails with him, it’s the positivity that appeals both in what he’s trying to achieve with his songs and this track in particular. ‘This is a song for people who feel like they aren’t being heard,’ Obez says. ‘Don’t get the respect they deserve, and who are ready to stand up and do something about it.’ And the delivery is a dream, I love the fact that Obez is true to his roots. Just take a listen, there’s no way he could come from anywhere else but Yorkshire.

So what we’ve got is a hugely danceable groove, great positive words delivered well. It’s a winner, I’m a convert to Obez’s music.

So I guess we have to address the fact that some of you may not be fans of grime, well I’ve never been a great fan – I like the odd thing here and there – but this track has great potential to crossover. This isn’t just for fans of grime, hiphop or rap. You like music with a groove you can dance to, this is for you. Like songs with great words, this has that.

I urge you to give it a go people, please don’t be put off by the fact this is a grime track. You never know, you might surprise yourself. This is great music, plain and simple.

The info

West Yorkshire Grime artist Obez having grown up on the streets of Bradford and Leeds, brings a gritty, urban sound to the game. His colourful background includes getting caught up with the gang life, coming close to death, and coming back to be successful in business with the scars to prove it.

Making it in the grime scene in West Yorkshire has been a struggle. Obez, though, hasn’t been one to back down: he’s smashing through boundaries and preconceptions to shine a light on the scene.

CAMPAIGN NEWS: Music Venue Trust launches Fightback across the UK

0

Since the Fightback gig at Roundhouse in October 2016 MVT have been working on a way to develop the concept of fundraising concerts. This week they are officially relaunching Fightback as the public-facing fundraising arm of MVT.

Rather than one-off events, it will be a programme of gigs, large and small, across the UK throughout 2018. Some will be big-name artists, many will not, but all of them will offer music fans the chance to be involved in fundraising for our Emergency Response service, which in 2017 directly intervened to tackle and halt threats of closure faced by 41 Grassroots Music Venues.

Fightback aims to raise £100,000 from over 100 events in 2018 right across the UK. MVT are inviting all venues in the Music Venues Alliance to organise events at their own venues throughout the year in support of the charity’s work. To help them do this, Fightback Events Manager Gary Prosser has created a Gig in a Box – a toolkit to make organising a Fightback show as easy as possible. Resources include:

  • Gig Manual
  • Poster Template
  • Press Release Template
  • Logos, banners and a projection image for the back of the stage

In addition, MVT will help with promotion of Fightback shows, supplying some local press contacts to add to your own and promoting the show nationally.

If you run a venue that is not yet a Music Venues Alliance member then joining is simple and free, just complete the form here: http://musicvenuetrust.com/music-venues-alliance/

Partners

MVT has been working with the music industry and commercial partners to identify key artists and partnership opportunities for Fightback that benefit the charity, the hosting venue and music fans.

They have some big-name artists identifying diary dates for Fightback shows and some interesting partnerships with brands or companies in the pipeline. The aim of these partnerships is to bring to supporting venues a package of benefits that means that not only are venues supporting MVT, they are also getting a great show.

Fightback Events Manager, Gary Prosser explains, “Fightback has been over a year in the making and I am looking forward to working closely with every Grassroots Music Venue in the UK to create some memorable shows for fans of live music all over the UK. We’re building an incredible opportunity for artists and brands to come together to directly connect with Grassroots Music Venues and make a real difference”.

Forthcoming Gigs

Fightback kicks off 2018 with four SOLD OUT shows featuring The Wombats. The gigs are taking place at in GMVs in Milton Keynes, Blackpool, Bradford and Stoke-on-Trent in February in association with Openstage. MVT patron Bright Light Bright Light will headline a show in March at The Horn in St Albans, fresh from touring with Erasure. MVT have set up both a Facebook page and a new website to promote Fightback gigs:

https//:www.facebook.com/MVTFightback/
https://www.mvtfightback.com/
Twitter @mvtfightback

Merch

The website and Facebook page will also sell the related range of limited edition “signature” T-shirts, featuring handwritten lyrics by featured artists. The first shirt, a limited edition I Still Believe lyric shirt by Frank Turner, sold out in days. To celebrate the sold-out Wombats shows and the Bright Light Bright Light show the bands have designed their own handwritten lyric T-shirts. These T-shirts are sold by our long-term partners Jackpot with all proceeds going to MVT. Obviously not all shows will have related merch, but they are building the T-shirt range.

For bands and artists

Please sign up to be part of Fightback. The information form with all the details we need is here: http://bit.ly/FightbackSubForm

MVT have announced ambitious plans to stage 100 gigs at 100 venues in 2018 as part of the Fightback UK campaign. They’re bringing together venues and audiences to stage local events that have a national impact. They need solo, duo, bands, DJs, in all genres to take part in those events, and want to know about you and your band to enable us to create some great events.

This is a big charity push by MVT, but they’re serious about grassroots artists just like they are serious about grassroots venues. MVT will abide by the Musicians’ Union Fair Play Venue scheme guidelines, and will work with you to promote your act and to ensure a great show that makes a real difference takes place.

If you’ve been looking for a way for your band to get involved, this is it. #FIGHTBACK

TOUR NEWS: Spear of Destiny announce 35th anniversary tour May/June 2018

0

Hard to believe we know but it is true, Kirk Brandon has now been leading SPEAR OF DESTINY for 35 years.

SPEAR OF DESTINY were formed in 1983 after the demise of Kirk Brandon’s post punk iconic rockers THEATRE OF HATE. (Brandon had also, before TOH, been the main man in every punk rockers favourite band of that era The Pack)

The current line up of Spear is the longest serving to date and features Adrian Portas (New Model Army / Sex Gang Children), Craig Adams (Sisters of Mercy / The Cult / The Mission) and Phil Martini (Jim Jones and the Righteous Mind) on drums. Long time Brandon cohort Steve Allan-Jones will be covering the keyboards.

On April 6th 2018 SPEAR OF DESTINY will release their 14th studio album “Tontine” The album has been fully funded from a private fan pre-sale of “Tontine”. The album will be officially released for Brandon’s own Eastersnow Recording Company label imprint and will be available on CD, Vinyl and Download.

The current live show pulls on songs from all 35+ years of SOD. The classic’s Liberator, Mickey, Rainmaker, The Wheel, Never Take Me Alive etc… are all found sitting closely alongside newer fan favourites such as Sputnik, Suicide God, Judas, Lucky Man & Berlin! Berlin!’.

As 2018 is the 35 anniversary of the band’s iconic debut long player “Grapes of Wrath” live shows throughout the year will most certainly feature a good smattering of GOW tracks for good measure.

TOUR NEWS: Nick J.D. Hodgson announces dates for April 2018

0

“Oh My God I can’t believe it, I’m going on tour” – NICK

This was never the plan when Nick left Kaiser Chiefs in 2012. The plan was to stay at home writing and producing for other people. After five years of writing songs with everyone from Shirley Bassey to Rat Boy via Mark Ronson and John Newman, the plan changed.

His solo album ‘Tell Your Friends’ came out on 26th Jan 2018 to great acclaim: album of the week in the Sunday Express, 4* in the Evening Standard and Dork Magazine (‘Hodgson’s innate genius shines brighter than ever before’), whilst The Sunday Times revelled in ‘this lovely album’s artless, low-fi approach’ and Q Magazine noted that Hodgson’s ‘ear for a winning melody remains acute’.

The April tour will be his first since the arena and festival headline slots with Kaiser Chiefs when Nick played drums and was the principal songwriter. He will be joined by his fabulous new band, including members of Howling Bells and The Dead 60s. Expect to hear the new album alongside a few indie anthems courtesy of his back catalogue.

15th – Birmingham, The Actress and Bishop
17th – London, 100 Club

TOUR & ALBUM NEWS: OTHERKIN announce April 2018 dates, live album out 6th April

0

Fresh from touring with The Amazons, OTHERKIN have announced a new UK tour, ahead of a new live vinyl album which captures the band in all their raw ‘n’ ragged concert glory.

2017 was a landmark year for Otherkin. Having opened for Guns ‘N’ Roses at Slane Castle, rocked Download and Leeds/Reading festivals and toured with punk rock legends The Dead Kennedys, they released their debut album – “OK” – in September. This was immediately followed by an epic, fifty-one gig, ten-thousand kilometre jaunt around seventeen European countries, finishing with a triumphant, sold-out, homecoming show at Dublin’s Button Factory just before Christmas.

Recorded at concerts in Hamburg and Berlin last autumn; “Deutschland K.O.” is a punk-rock Polaroid of a band thriving in their natural element – the sweaty rock ‘n’ roll rooms where hearts are broken like noses, dreams are born, shoes are lost and the mosh-pit rules.

“Deutschland K.O.” will be released on Rubyworks’ vinyl and digital on Friday 6th April. Otherkin fans attending any of the UK tour dates will be able to buy the album at the venue ahead of the official street date.

Otherkin UK tour dates:

Tuesday 3rd April The Garage (Attic Bar), Glasgow
Wednesday 4th April Jumpin’ Jacks, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
Thursday 5th April Jimmy’s, Manchester
Friday 6th April Camden Assembly, London
Saturday 7th Muthers Studio, Birmingham
