EP & TOUR NEWS: TV ME ‘A Broadcast from TV ME’ out 16th February, tour February 2018

0

Liverpool based 3-piece pop project TV ME have recently announced the release of their newest EP ‘A Broadcast From TV ME’, a 4-track experimental fusion of psych, art pop and dream pop.

Led by Thomas McConnell, the songwriter of the band – who toured as a solo artist supporting Mercury-nominee, C Duncan, before taking time to hone his writing skills and further explore the incorporation of psych and electronica into a new project – TV ME formed in early 2017 with their debut single gaining instant airplay with BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio, and a signing with Deltasonic Records for their early releases. Offering harmonic vocals teamed with classic song-writing and engaging textures, the newest release from the trio – their first self released project – presents an EP ranging in style from psych-folk to cinematic instrumentals and dance pop whilst still retaining a fresh sound.

The lead single ‘Stitches’ was written in sections by Tom himself over the duration of 15 years, with the beginning piano piece written at the age of 14, the ending written age 10 and middle section ‘stitching’ the piece together two years ago in 2016. Taking inspiration from old videos of Laurel & Hardy, Pinky & Perky and A Hard Day’s Night for sound and lyrics, 60’s and 70’s influences can be clearly heard in both the vocals and guitar track.

Since their formation last year, the trio have landed some notable support slots with the likes of Cat’s Eyes, Flyte and Childhood and have recently embarked on their first UK headline tour in support of their EP release on Friday 16th February, with plans to release their debut album later in 2018.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Albert Hammond JR new album out 9th March, support tour with Franz Ferdinand

0

Albert Hammond Jr has announced his fourth studio album ‘Francis Trouble’ will be made available globally on March 9th. Today, fans can preorder the album and get an instant download of the track ‘Muted Beatings’.

‘Francis Trouble’ explores a deeply personal topic – the stillborn death of his twin brother, Francis, and the lingering effects that event has had in his life and music. In November of 1979, Hammond Jr’s mother, Claudia, miscarried. Although they rushed to the hospital, Claudia and Albert Hammond Sr. were told that the baby was far too premature to live. Albert continued to grow inside of his mother undetected until she was nearly six months pregnant.

Although he had always known of the existence of Francis, it was not until he was 36 years old that he learned from an aunt that part of Francis had remained behind in the womb and was born alongside him – a fingernail. With his music moving in a different path than before, Hammond Jr wondered if this new direction came from another avenue of himself, perhaps emanating from whatever he and the departed Francis had shared for the few short months they had together.

Taking a page from Bowie, Hammond Jr says: “What the music says may be serious, but as a medium it should not be questioned, analyzed or taken too seriously. I think it should be tarted up, made into a character, a parody of itself. The music is the mask the message wears and I, the performer, am the message.”

Working within this mentality, Hammond Jr created ‘Francis Trouble’, an homage to both the death of his twin and his own birth, as well as the complexities of identity that arise because of their intermingling. The number 36 became especially relevant, as he had learned more of Francis’s story at that age, and because he was born on the 9th day of the 4th month of the year. Significantly, the album is exactly 36 minutes long.

Vuromantics have followed up their EP ‘In The Night’ with a brand new single entitled ‘Gold And Blue’, opting to release the single as a free download. Sam Christie of the band says: “It’s something we haven’t done before and with us pushing further into many new areas on our upcoming tour its going to be a great opportunity for new people to discover Vuromantics”

Recorded at Junior Park Studios in their hometown, Sheffield, Gold And Blue’s echoes of Sheffield music legends can be found within their music; it teems with The Human League’s electronic pop output – deep, smooth vocals over instrumentation that’s captivating, interchangeable, and most of all – refreshing as the band deliver a wonk funky synthpop taste of whats to come in 2018.

Jake Christie of the band said “It’s got that 80’s Gary Numan & Talking Heads vibe going for it. What we did was adapt the track more to sound studio quality with real time drums and huge layered up vocals”. Callum Hall of the band added “We have been gigging this track live for sometime, you can really hear the progression in this”

FESTIVAL NEWS: Long Division announces first acts and format

0

Long Division takes place in Wakefield 1st/3rd June 2018. Billy Bragg will headline the festival at the stunning Wakefield Cathedral.

Wakefield’s Long Division Festival has announced its return after a fallow year in 2017. After taking a year off to take stock and better understand what he wanted the festival to be, festival founder and director Dean Freeman and the newly expanded Long Division team are bringing it back bigger than ever with an expanded line-up and broader programme with a host of free entry and paid events taking place in venues all across the city and regions thriving art and creative community.

Leading the announcement is folk and roots icon Billy Bragg who will be headlining the festival hot on the heels of his acclaimed mini-album ‘Build Bridges Not Walls’ which was released at the end of 2017. Joining the ‘Bard of Barking’ at Long Division will be Scottish troubadour King Creosote who will be making his return to Wakefield after three years, ex-Ash guitarist Charlotte Hatherly and Helen Marnie of lauded electronic outfit Ladytron.

Also on the bill are Leeds indie-legends Cud, Long Division favourites and psych-punk duo The Lovely Eggs and avant- jazzers Shatners Bassoon. As ever, new music and making the arts accessible to all is at the heart of what Long Division is about and as such they have booked some of the most exciting new bands to come from the West Yorkshire region including post-punk three piece Drahla who have had support from Loud & Quiet, DIY, BBC 6 Music and Dork among many others, pillars of Leeds’ thriving DIY scene Galaxians and 6 piece fuzzy-lo-fi soon to be heavy hitters Team Picture.

When asked about reviving the festival and booking for the festival again, founder Dean Freeman said: “It’s wonderful to be back in the game of announcing artists and projects again. Taking a year out in 2017 was tough because we were just bystanders, whilst the world turned on without us. I don’t think it’s often a festival like us has that luxury, to step off the treadmill and really think about what it wants to be. We learnt our passion isn’t for people up on a stage playing guitars; it is for culture and how it brings people together. It’s also a passion for our city and for creating opportunities for artists and performers where there can often be too few”

Alongside the music, Long Division will be hosting an exciting number of arts and cultural installations and events which will be unveiled over the course of the next few months that will include a collaboration with Wakefield Artwalk, as part of their 10th anniversary celebration and the Arts Council England supported “A Manifesto For A New Wakefield” Which will include brand new Commissions, the first of which is from Jamie Lockhart of Wakefield’s Mi Mye. Taking inspiration from a songbook from 1851 owned by his Great Great Great Grandfather, who was a Piper for Queen Victoria, Jamie will create a new piece of work exploring his and his Grandfather’s journeys from their homes on the far North Coast of Scotland to London and Wakefield.

Long Division 2018 will take place in a host of venues across the city including: Wakefield Cathedral, Warehouse 23, Wakefield Town Hall, Elizabethan Gallery, The Red Shed, Wakefield Beer Exchange, Jolly Boys’ Tap, Neon Workshops, Wakefield Precinct and many more TBA.

Long Division was founded in 2011 and is dedicated to promoting independent, creative and forward-thinking artists and creating engaging and unique new work. It is Wakefield’s largest festival of Music & Culture and has hosted artists including British Sea Power, The Cribs, The Fall, Ghostpoet, Ash, Pulled Apart By Horses, The Wedding Present, Robin Ince, Josie Long and Simon Armitage.

This year Long Division is presented and supported by Wakefield Business Improvement District and Arts Council England. Manager of Wakefield Bid, Elizabeth Murphy said about the festivals return: “Long Division is a unique event in the summer, which attracts visitors from far and wide. As a Business Improvement District we want to make Wakefield more welcoming, more attractive and a better place to do business and Long Division helps us achieve that by attracting a diverse audience for its eclectic music offer. Wakefield Bid looks forward to welcoming musicians and music fans from around the UK to enjoy the music and the rich cultural offer that the city has for everyone.”

TOUR & ALBUM NEWS: The Bellrays announce March 2018 dates, new album due 2nd February

Punk. Funk. Rock. Soul. The main ingredients in a potent witch’s brew that the Bellrays have been mixing for a long time now. Returning with their first full new album since the release of ‘Black Lightning’ in 2010, ‘Punk Funk Rock Soul Volume 2’ follows the release of ‘Volume One’, the four-track taster EP released in 2017 as an appetiser for the main feast. ‘Volume Two’ arrives February 2nd via Cargo Record UK.

“We take our ear where our heart lives in simple song writing, making ourselves and hopefully all who hear it feel good,” explains singer Lisa Kekaula. “We are proud of its simplicity and love how the new songs sound like old friends. This release is a collection of songs that illustrates why we do what we do. We are not 20 year olds and that’s okay. We are proud of our mileage and journey and PUNK FUNK ROCK SOUL validates our comfort in what music means to us. Viability, trend and meaning are up to the eye of the beholder…we like to rock.”

FESTIVAL NEWS: Tramlines Festival 2018

0

The 10th edition of Tramlines Festival will feature various stages of music, comedy, cinema, and its biggest lineup yet all based at Sheffield’s Hillsborough Park.

Sheffield’s Tramlines will host its 10th anniversary at Hillsborough Park from Friday 20th – Sunday 22nd July 2018. The celebratory move will mark the first Tramlines to be held on just one site. With it comes a bigger capacity – licenced for up to 40,000 people – and the space to programme more festival-style entertainment than before. New additions include a comedy stage, pop-up cinema, kids and family area, a stage programmed by Sheffield institution, the Leadmill, and local legend, Jon McClure (Reverend and The Makers) and much more. Organisers are pulling out all the stops to not only make the 10th anniversary the most memorable yet, but a huge celebration of everything the Steel City has to offer. Tickets are now on sale from £35 plus booking fee and available from the Tramlines website.

From its inception in 2009, Tramlines Festival has been on a continual journey of growth and progression. Its first major move came in 2015 when Tramlines doubled its main stage capacity with a move to Ponderosa Park, followed by a move out of the city centre venues in 2017 and into Sheffield’s parks, to become an exclusively outdoor festival. Over the years, The Libertines, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Sister Sledge, The Charlatans, Public Enemy, Basement Jaxx, Dizzee Rascal, The Coral, All Saints, Kano, Metronomy, The Cribs, Kelis, Primal Scream, and Toots and The Maytals are just a few of the big names to have graced the Tramlines stages. Whilst the lineup for the 10th year is yet to be announced, it is guaranteed to be its biggest yet, featuring the internationally acclaimed alongside the hottest emerging talent.

The move to Hillsborough Park means Tramlines can stage a truly spectacular event with more space to roll out extra entertainment akin to a traditional greenfield festival. In total, four stages will make up Tramlines Festival 2018 including two stages of world-class music from the soon-to-be-announced, genre-busting lineup.

New stages

New for 2018 is a stage curated, on alternate days, by leading indie venue, the Leadmill and ‘The Reverend’ Jon McClure. The Leadmill will programme an alternative, heritage music offering on Saturday evening, whilst the Reverend’s Sunday Service, takes over the following evening. By day, this stage will induce belly laughs via the country’s leading comedy talent, programmed by Tramlines in conjunction with the Leadmill.

Also brand new for the 10th year is the Library Stage. With an overarching leftfield vibe, it’s the place to check out contemporary live performances from a variety of emerging talent.

The 10th Tramlines sees the return – and the expansion of – Into The Trees, a new area that was introduced in 2017. A ton of kids and family friendly entertainment has been programmed throughout the day, and post 7pm, an exciting bill of party DJs takeover for a night of dancing!

LIVE REVIEW: Antony and Friends, Central Methodist Church Todmorden, 27th January 2018

0

Three string players joined Antony Brannick for a programme consisting entirely of the melodious music of Dvorak. Antony Brannick played the piano throughout the programme. It began with the Sonatina in G Major played expressively by Jonathan Whitehead on violin. This opened assertively and moved on through various moods to a thoughtful end. Then came the reflective “Waldesruhe” with David Leys on cello, and after that Fritz Kreisler’s arrangement of Dvorak’s music, the dynamic “Slavonic Fantasie”, which featured Andrew Rostron on violin.

In the second half Antony Brannick, Andrew Rostron and David Leys really gelled in the Piano Trio in G Minor (op 26). This had a dramatic opening, followed by a serious Largo and a lively, staccato Scherzo, ending with a vivid finish.

LIVE REVIEW: An Evening in Vienna, Todmorden Town Hall, 20th January 2018

0

Todmorden Orchestra gave us an evening of Viennese music, mostly by the most prolific of the Strauss family, Johann Strauss II. There were also his brother Eduard’s lively railway-themed polka “Bahn Frei”, the Toy Symphony, attributed to Leopold Mozart, featuring toy musical instruments, and Franz Lehar’s elegant Gold and Silver Waltz. The audience got to sing along in the Egyptian March, and the programme finished with the well known Blue Danube waltz and the clapalong Radetzky March. A programme to liven up a winter’s evening.
