EP REVIEW: Fizzy Blood – ‘Summer Of Luv’

0

THIS HUGE, I’m going to say that again, THIS IS HUGE. It’s music like this that reassures me that music isn’t dead. There isn’t one single ‘filler’ on this EP, it’s all good, and I mean very very good.

The EP opens with ‘PAWN’. Reminding me of some sort of mad cross between Far Eastern music and good old-fashioned US punk, this roars, it rushes, it growls. The guitars scream.

‘ADHD’ has all these touches, clever clever touches – like the occasional pinging sounds (they’re a little cow-bell like). I really adore the vocals on this track, they are all sort of laid back and slightly discordant in places. And the fade-out is wonderful.

And now to my favourite track ‘HAUNTED’. Bizarrely my first thought was that this is some sort of mutant Screaming Lord Sutch thing, it’s the vocals, heavy on the echo and the delivery. You might want to check out ‘Jack The Ripper’. My second thought was The Doors. And then, and then it takes off. Again there are these touches, the mad backing vocals, the weird sounds in the background.

Ah now ‘SUMMER OF LUV’. Quite what are you trying to do to us Fizzy Blood? Do not let the intro to this track deceive you. This is a groove, you can mad-rave dance to this thing – I know this I did. It’s like a guitar based interpretation of one of those summer rave anthems. It even has a little drop-out section.

‘HEALING ISN’T FREE’ is mad, it’s all weird vocals and strange rhythms. It’s a blast and it’s fabulous.

Fizzy Blood’s music is quite difficult to describe, it isn’t easily fitted into any sort of easy niche. There’s all sorts of things happening, it’s sort of punky, sort of psychy, sort of 80s’ rock in places, sort of 70s’ art-rock. What it is, is a groove, it’s a blast. It makes you grin. It grabs you immediately, and then you listen again, and you hear all these things going on, those clever touches – the backing vocals, the layers of sound.

We don’t do star ratings on LSF but if we did I’d give it five out of five. Go get some Fizzy Blood in your life people.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Canshaker Pi release new single ‘Indie Academy’, announce September UK + Europe tour with Spiral Stairs

0

Canshaker Pi’s shows can be described as one big kamikaze run. The Amsterdam-based quartet’s inflammable brand of indie rock is a gleeful but high-stakes affair.

Beneath their fidgety, high-strung stage antics simmers a piercing intensity, one that perhaps comes with a creeping awareness that the days of being young, wild and free will eventually pass. With releasing their new single Indie Academy via Excelsior Recordings, Canshaker Pi frantically capitalize on their youthful zest with a relentless now-or-never stride.

Canshaker Pi is touring Europe this fall, alongside Spiral Stairs (of Pavement-member Scott Kannberg).

TOUR & ALBUM NEWS: The Travelling Band instores and dates, new album ‘Sails’

0

Manchester’s The Travelling Band will this week release their forthcoming album, ‘Sails’, on 25th August 2017 via Sideways Saloon Records/Kartel.

Focused around the songwriting talents and production skills of Jo Dudderidge and Adam Gorman and the rhythmic driving force of enigmatic drummer Nick Vaal, The Travelling Band have been quietly honing what Marc Riley described as “Mancunian Americana”. The resulting album mines a rich seam of influences, with key album track ‘Last Night I Dreamt (of Killing You)’ and the grungy ‘Wasted Eyes’ highlighting the band’s love of American indie rock, but still with that Mancunian twist nodding to Elbow and I Am Kloot. ‘Mopping Forwards’ draws on their time spent in East Nashville and the almost Satie-like melancholic ballad ‘Loser’ belies the darker turn that Jo and Adam’s lyrics have taken.

Beneath the surface of the rockier exterior and beautifully woven string and horn textures, the album’s unexpected darker lyrical themes and noir-esque approach reveal a band navigating stormy waters as personal and relationship issues began to emerge after ten years of hard-hitting life on the road. Two of the five remaining founding members jumped ship during the album’s turbulent recording process, and an album that was essentially recorded live ended up taking a further twelve months to complete.

Ironically, it was Spenny, one of the two departing members, who had driven the band to get back in to the studio after the event that Jo has dubbed “the Christmas miracle”. The band made national news when social media rallied round after all their gear was stolen along with their tour van: “what happened made us feel wanted and relevant to people’s lives. The band seemed bigger than just the members,” Jo says. When the van and all the gear was safely returned, Spenny floated the idea of getting straight in to the studio to record a new album live, quickly.

However, despite the initial enthusiasm, the band started to fracture. As the recording process stalled, Jo travelled to Nashville and became inspired by the sense of community amongst artists and musicians in the city’s buzzing East Nashville suburbs. He returned to Manchester with renewed confidence and a desire to create a similar kind of supportive hub back in his home city:

“It seemed an obvious thing to me: if there’s a city in the world that has that collaborative spirit at its core, then it’s Manchester.”

It was out of this new-found optimism that Pinhole Sound Studio was born: Jo and Adam consolidated their instruments and recording equipment into a space which they have turned into a hub of creativity for the Manchester musical community.

“All the bands coming in to record at Pinhole Sound Studio gave us the impetus to finish our own record,” Jo continues. “The songs we had were the sails for the band – all we had to do was find the energy to breathe life in to them.”

SAILS is due 25th August via Sideways Saloon Records/Kartel Music Group and available to pre-order now: http://smarturl.it/sails

1CD; Digital; 2LP Vinyl – https://ume.lnk.to/SMBUltimateHits
2CD; Digital; 4LP Vinyl (Deluxe Edition) – https://ume.lnk.to/SMBUltimateHitsDeluxe

It was recently announced that Steve Miller has brought his entire catalogue of recorded music to Capitol, where he originally began his recording career in 1967. Miller has opened his vault/warehouse of music, footage, photos, memorabilia, artwork, handwritten notes, journals, and more to Capitol/UMe to include in his upcoming releases. Steve Miller Band’s new Ultimate Hits collections, produced by Miller, launch the initiative.

“Selecting material to include in these two collections and revisiting the creation of these recordings I’m reminded of how I learned to make multi-track recordings from Les Paul and play lead guitar from T Bone Walker. I’ve been blessed to work with so many wonderful musicians and engineers and friends over the years. Mostly I want to thank you our fans who come out to our shows and listen to our records. I hope you enjoy this as much I did putting this together for you.” — Steve Miller

Running through Miller’s distinctive catalog is a combination of virtuosity and song craft. His parents were jazz aficionados – not to mention close friends of Les Paul and Mary Ford – so, as a budding guitarist, Miller absorbed valuable lessons from that musical tradition. When the family moved to Texas, Miller deepened his education in the blues, eventually moving to Chicago, where he played with Muddy Waters, James Cotton, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy and Paul Butterfield.

One of the world’s most commercially successful and acclaimed artist/bands in the history of popular music, Steve Miller was a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late ’60s. The Steve Miller Band released two LPs on Capitol Records in 1968: ‘Children of the Future’, and ‘Sailor’, which included ‘Living In The USA’ which became a staple on the new rock radio format. Next came ‘Brave New World’, the band’s third album including the hit ‘Space Cowboy’, and ‘My Dark Hour’, which Miller recorded in London with fellow label-mate, Paul McCartney, who is credited as Paul Ramon.

After the band’s next few albums, ‘Your Saving Grace’ (1969), ‘Rock Love’ (1971), ‘Recall The Beginning’ (1972), and ‘Number 5’ (1970), Miller made some changes to the band, went to Los Angeles and produced his own record in 19 days. That album was ‘The Joker’. The title track became a Number One worldwide smash hit. Miller had crafted a brand of pure pop that was polished, exciting and irresistible that dominated radio in a way that few artists have ever managed. His next two albums, ‘Fly Like an Eagle’ (1976) and ‘Book of Dreams’ (1977), both went multi-platinum, and the hits they generated are among the most recognisable songs in pop music history. Hit followed hit in what seemed like an endless flow: ‘Take The Money And Run’, ‘Rock’n Me’, ‘Fly Like An Eagle’, ‘Jet Airliner’, ‘Jungle Love’, and ‘Swingtown’ to name a few. In 1978, Capitol released Greatest Hits 1974–78.

In recent years, Miller has immersed himself in the blues once again. And, as always, whether he was riding the top of the charts or exploring the blue highways of American music, he is playing and singing with conviction and precision, passion and eloquence. At this stage of his life, in 2017, Miller feels more fulfilled than ever. He recently moved to New York, where he is on the Board of Jazz at Lincoln Center and on the Board of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Musical Instrument Department. And, of course, he continues to record and is currently on tour.

TOUR & EP NEWS: Young States announce October 2017 dates, release ‘Past Truths | Present Lies’

0

Young States are pleased to announce a number of mini tour dates after sharing their new single ‘Over It By Now’ recently on Upset. Taken from the forthcoming EP, ‘Past Truths | Present Lies’ – out 29th September.

Tour dates as follows:

Saturday 7th October: Manchester Aatma
Sunday 8th October: Bournemouth The Anvil
Monday 9th October: London Surya
Friday 13th October: Birmingham Cogs Bar

Hailing from Norwich, Young States are a four-piece band specialising in energetic and passionate punk rock.

Formed at the end of 2014, the band met at a music school in Norwich. Guitar and vocalist, Libby was on a sound engineering course, the others on music performance courses. Guitarist, Amy got Young States together as she was bored of seeing male band after male band, and wanted to form an all-female group. She approached the others in the corridors of college after seeing them carrying their instruments.

With a love of Brand New, Kids In Glass Houses, Defeater and Mallory Knox, Young States quickly wrote and recorded their debut EP ‘Down to You’ which saw them receive play from Scuzz TV, BBC Introducing and features in the pages of Kerrang!

New EP “Past Truths | Present Lies” is about personal growth and letting go of the things that have previously caused you pain.

Lead singer and bass player Georgia says: “All the tracks on the EP have different meanings to some extent but the common thread between them all is that they’re all about my own (not-entirely-happy) feelings I’ve experienced in the past. The idea for the EP name comes from saying that I experience these exact feelings at the moment wouldn’t be true.”

‘Past Truths | Present Lies’ was produced by Drew Lawson (Roam/Summerlin/Me Vs Hero) and mastered by Grant Berry (All Time Low/Roam/Boston Manor) who gave the EP it’s Midas touch. After finally perfecting their sound, Young States are ready to go places they’ve never been to before. Anthemic, dark and melodic in equal measure, this is their strongest statement yet.

Young States are:

Georgia Leeder – Vocals/Bass
Libby Irons – Guitar/Vocals
Amy Jeffery – Guitar
Molly Draba-Mann – Drums

SINGLE NEWS: Fizzy Blood unveil ‘ADHD’ ahead of Reading & Leeds Festivals

0

“ADHD is a song of contrasts. The lightheartedness of the music and the seriousness of lyrics don’t really match up which gives it that little extra edge. It’s like a prescription written on a sandwich board” – Benki Inkley, Vocals

‘ADHD’ saw its worldwide radio premiere on last nights BBC Radio 1 Rock Show alongside an exclusive interview. The track drops just before the band’s performance on the hallowed grounds of Reading & Leeds festivals, marking the culmination of a heavy year of touring.

“Being a band based in Leeds all you hear, all summer long is ‘Ahh so you’re going to Leeds Festival right?’. In years previous we’d have said with broken hearts a collective no. We’re all buzzing to now actually reply to those people with ‘yeah see you there!’. Without a doubt, it is our favourite festival in the UK, and it’ll be an exciting first for many of us to check out Reading festival too. We love mud so much!” – Benji Inkley

Forthcoming EP SUMMER OF LUV follows colossal debut EP Feast (2015), which generated widespread praise and fuelled shows alongside Allusondrugs , The Virginmarys , Max Raptor and The Dead Kennedys .
