ALBUM & GIG NEWS: Binker and Moses release ‘Journey To The Mountain Of Forever’ June 2017, play Hull Jazz Festival July 2017

0

Binker Golding and Moses Boyd are a semi-free jazz saxophone and drums duo. They are among the frontrunners of a loose yet interconnected group of London-based jazz musicians that are influenced by the music that surrounds them, including grime, hip-hop and electronica as well as jazz. Like their US counterparts, they’re connecting with a new, younger audience.

Born either side of the Thames – Binker north in Edmonton, Moses south in Catford – the pair met eight years ago and toured extensively as members of Zara McFarlane’s band, recording three albums for Giles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings. It was during the onstage sound checks with McFarlane that Binker and Moses started developing their duo improvisations, eventually bringing the idea of recording them to the attention of Gearbox Records, the vinyl-led record label and vinyl mastering studio.

Their debut album, Dem Ones, kickstarted a sensational period for the duo, earning them a string of awards including Best Jazz Act at the 2015 MOBO Awards and two wins at the Jazz FM Awards 2016: UK Jazz Act of the Year and Breakthrough Act of the Year. They were also voted Jazz Newcomer of the Year at the 2016 Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

From the beginning Binker and Moses have been building a strong young audience base performing in the more intimate rooms away from the traditional jazz venues, such as Brilliant Corners in Dalston and Deptford’s Job Centre as well in bookshops, cafes and record stores. In these situations they can play without amplification, often ‘in the round’ and facing each other, drawing the audience in to their uninterrupted sets that continually ebb and flow, building to tremendously powerful crescendos.

The new album

‘Journey to the Mountain of Forever’ is a two record set: the first disc features the duo on their own, while on the second they are joined by the great UK free jazz saxophonist Evan Parker, trumpeter Byron Wallen, harpist Tori Handsley, tabla player Sarathy Korwar and drummer Yussef Dayes.

Disc / LP One: The Realm of Now
1.The Departure; 2.Intoxication From The Jahvmonishi Leaves; 3.Fete By The River; 4.Trees On Fire; 5.The Shaman’s Chant; 6.Leaving The Now Behind
Musicians: Binker Golding – tenor saxophone; Moses Boyd – drums

Disc / LP Two: The Realms of the Infinite
1.The Valley Of The Ultra Blacks; 2.Gifts From The Vibrations Of Light; 3.Mysteries and Revelations; 4.Ritual Of The Root; 5.The Voice Of Besbunu; 6.Echoes From The Other Side Of The Mountain; 7.Reverse Genesis; 8.Entering The Infinite; 9.At The Feet Of The Mountain Of Forever

SINGLE REVIEW: The Kicklips – ‘Hillywood’

0

Boy do The Kicklips pack a lot into the 2 minutes 33 seconds of their latest single. At the heart of it it’s a very ‘Sheffield’ piece of indie rock but wait there’s lots of other sounds in there. Hints of 80s heavy rock, some distinct psychobilly stuff and that’s just on a couple of listens. That’s clever, to pack all of this into one short track and not have it sound like a mess. On top of this there’s some great lyrics – which you can actually hear.

I like this, I like it a lot. ‘Why’s that?’ I hear you ask. Well it’s the raucousness, the fact that it sounds live, it sounds like a band playing together, not like it’s lots of takes that have been pieced together. But it’s the best live sound you’ve heard in a long time. It’s that these guys know how to play – the playing on this is fabulous. And more importantly they know how to put a song together, and how to leave you wanting more.

So the very least you could do is to spend 2 ½ minutes of your time listening to this, and then I might suggest, getting it. Getting it so you have it it to hand when you need to a blast of raw raucous energy.

The single is available on Spotify, Deezer, Soundcloud and Google Play.

The info

The Kicklips are a three piece indie riff-rock band from Sheffield. Heavy 80s guitar riffs combined with punchy, mellow bass coming from the varying influences of the band. SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Luke Sital-Singh single ‘Oh My God’ available, May 2017 tour

0

‘Oh My God’ is the new single from Luke Sital-Singh, available to stream & download now. It’ is the third track to be taken from the Bristol-based singer-songwriter’s new album ‘Time Is A Riddle’, which will be released on May 12th on Raygun Records / Red Essential.

“Turns out relationships are difficult and worthwhile, complicated and calming, confusing and transparent, exasperating and tranquillising,” says Luke of ‘Oh My God’. “Basically the all time greatest thing to write songs about.”

The follow-up to his 2014 debut ‘The Fire Inside’, ‘Time Is A Riddle’ was recorded in Donegal on Ireland’s west coast with producer Tommy McLaughlin (Villagers). McLaughlin recruited a small group of local musicians, with Luke and the band slotting together effortlessly to record the album in ten days.

“There were big windows looking over the hills of Donegal, and it was raining the whole time, which was perfect for me,” says Luke. “We were playing and singing at the same time in this lovely big live room, with so much bleed, just the way records used to be made.

The natural, authentic nature of ‘Time Is A Riddle’ reflects Luke’s love of traditional crafts and the Slow Movement. His wife Hannah Cousins is an illustrator and printmaker who designed the album’s vivid cover, a lino print, and Luke will soon embark on a series of special filmed performances in the studios, workshops, foundries and ateliers of a host of Slow Movement crafts people he’s connected with up and down the country, including a Letterpress printer in Bristol, a ceramicist in Glasgow and a knife-maker in Derby.

“I like things that are well made, things that love has been put into,” he says. “It’s why I like the Slow Movement. It’s why I like vinyl.”

With his friends Tom Heron and Paul Steel, Luke is responsible for the popular comedy podcast ‘Idiot Check’. Listen to the latest episode on iTunes

VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: Andrew Combs dates April/May 2017

0

Premiered by the prestigious Rolling Stone Country, The Ry Cox directed film is cinematic in scope with nods to sci-fi and horror, not too distant from Netflix hit show ‘Stranger Things’ and an example of the gifted songwriter’s exciting musical direction on the hotly anticipated album, ‘Canyons Of My Mind’, released on April 7th, 2017 via Loose in Europe.

Combs has also announced his initial tour dates in support of the album, with appearances in Manchester and Leeds and more throughout the spring. Please see full tour dates details below, with more to be announced.

Already catching the attention of UK media with previous release ‘All These Dreams’, including publications Mojo and The Line Of Best Fit, Canyons Of My Mind will no doubt be Andrew’s UK breakthrough. The 11-song set was co-produced by Skylar Wilson (Justin Townes Earle, Caitlin Rose) & Jordan Lehning (Rodney Crowell, Caitlin Rose) and recorded at Battle Tapes Studio in East Nashville, TN and is some of Andrew’s strongest songwriting to date, already receiving support from NPR, American Songwriter and Paste Magazine.

A Dallas native now living near the same East Nashville airport immortalised in the opening sequence of Robert Altman’s country music odyssey, Andrew Combs is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and heir to that 1975 film’s idea of the Nashville troubadour. Well established in the East Nashville singer-songwriter scene alongside friends and contemporary artists Aaron Lee Tasjan, Erin Rae, Caitlin Rose, Nikki Lane, Andrew and his fellow indie artists are creating an alternative Nashville music scene. One which is coexisting completely independently from the glitzy dizzying glamour of mainstream music institution Music Row, born in the dive bars of East Nashville – these young talented musicians are capturing the voice of an American generation. Andrew shows musical maturity on Canyons Of My Mind, tackling political issues on ‘Dirty Rain’, he expresses environmental concerns, commenting on the gentrification and the destruction of America’s industrial and agrarian Heartland. Elsewhere Andrew writes elegant love songs and mood pieces, amounting to a rounded and crafted piece of modern songwriting.

On the ambitious video, Andrew Combs offered, “I loved where Ry’s head was at with this. When I first read his treatment, I knew he was spot on. I dug his plot idea – putting together a story of the hunter and its prey. The premise could have very easily become a sloppy mess of intertwined stories. Instead I think we got a nice, concise video that keeps you on your toes. That is very hard to do, in my opinion. I really appreciated Ry’s attitude – a mixture of professionalism and laid back. His easy going demeanor was key, especially when we were slogging through the cold river to get some daybreak shots.”

Canyons Of My Mind will be available digitally, on CD and 180g vinyl on Loose, available to pre-order now via PledgeMusic.

ALBUM REVIEW: WEIRDS – ‘SWARMCULTURE’

0

I first caught WEIRDS playing on a sunny afternoon at Bingley Music Live and was hugely impressed – both with the music and with the performance. So it was with a sense of anticipation that I sat down for my first listen to the band’s debut album.

I wasn’t disappointed, this album is huge. It’s a whirling maelstrom of a journey. At times delicate, at times growlingly bombastic. There are tunes (tunes you can hum), tracks you can dance to, tracks you can stomp to, and tracks that deserve nothing less than a set of headphones and a darkened room.

For those of you who haven’t heard WEIRDS they are the unholy collision of grunge, sludge, psych, psychedelia, hints of post-punk and acid/space rock, and, yes, poppy hooks. Sometimes you’re going to get all of this in one track. It’s one of those ‘it shouldn’t work but it does’ sounds.

The band have already released ‘Phantom’ from the album, and a video for ‘Valley of Vision’ (which you watch at the top of this review). You can stream ‘Phantom’ below.

This is going to give you an idea what you’re in for come release day. Or perhaps I should say ‘some idea’ because there is much more to the album than these.

The album opens with one of my favourites ‘Things That Crawl’. Don’t let the opening fool you, you’re going to dumped into a heavy riff, it’s one of those ‘what the hell’ moments that WEIRDS do oh so well. The fact that what comes after the riff is something completely different should come as no surprise. This track builds into the most wonderful climax. Just yummy.

Skipping neatly over ‘Valley of Vision’ – you’ve already listened to that haven’t you – we come to ‘Old World Blues’. It’s what I can only describe as Tom Waits doing metal. It roars, it screams, it does the blues stomp. It even sounds vaguely like 80s Southern Rock (a la Blackfoot) at one point. Listening tip – turn it up to 11.

‘Black Desert’ is a post-punkish epic, lush and it has this great poppy break. ‘Weird Sun’ smothers you in Madchester sounds, sprinkled with riffs, before mutating into something that sounds like 80s Here & Now, and ending in a sludge workout. It works, it works brilliantly.

Another of my favourites ‘Crows’ is a delicately arranged almost ballad-like track (at least when compared to some of the tracks before). It bends, it’s sinuous. ‘Salamander’s Sister’ weaves it’s musical magic on you. ‘Tunnelling’ is a doom laden track that sets you up for the final track ‘Past Life’. While this may start sounding like it’s going to be a psych influenced rock track, it explodes, it goes all post-punk.

This album is music for people who love music, not just people who buy stuff because it’s labelled with a genre that’s ‘hip ‘n’ trendy’. It’s music produced by a band who know their stuff, who know how to take influences from music they like and turn it into something that is their music.

So, do I love it? Yep I do. Should you buy it? Yep you should.

The album is out on 26th May via Alcopop! Records.

VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: Chris T-T video for ‘A Hole Full of Submarines’, final tour dates announced April/May 2017

0

Chris T-T has spent 20 years making and performing music under his own name, having released his debut 7” single at the end of May 1997. Since then, Chris T-T has always walked his own path, with visionary psych pop, startling humour and unflinching, sometimes discomforting radicalism. He’s released ten solo albums to consistent praise and has played over 2,300 shows worldwide. Ten years ago he joined the Xtra Mile Recordings family, signing in 2007 on the suggestion of fast-rising young singer and fan Frank Turner. He has released four albums with Xtra Mile: Capital (2008), Love Is Not Rescue (2010), The Bear (2013) and last year’s 9 Green Songs.

Chris has announced that the upcoming set of ‘Best Of’ shows and the 2-disc collection will signal the end of the road for him in this guise for the forseeable future. There will be a final London show in the autumn. He will also play a show during Frank Turner’s Lost Evenings four-day residency at the Roundhouse.

Chris says: “Thank you so very much for continuing to support me over the years. You’re a small crew but you’ve been the most beautiful audience and become better friends I could’ve ever hoped for or imagined.

“From 1st June, I’m hoping to try some new projects. I like audio editing and podcasting, so I’m developing ideas there. Maybe I’ll write a book, I don’t know. I’ll always compose and play piano – but if I return to making music publicly at any point, I feel I need to start from scratch and create in a fresh, different way, though I don’t know what that is.”

Whatever comes next, Chris T-T’s body of work so far will continue to inspire, move and amuse listeners new and old.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Louise Distras’ ‘Outside Of You’ out 26th May, tour dates April to August 2017

0

Louise’s path from hardship to heart-felt anthems began when she ran away from home, aged 16, armed with a guitar and the few chords she knew.

Inspired by Nirvana and the punk-rock gateway the Seattle legends provided, Louise turned her back on the bullying that had made her life unbearable and decided to play music for anyone who’d listen.

Her unshakeable belief that “music can change the world” underlines her own story. It certainly changed hers. “I’m standing up for the disenfranchised kids who get picked on at school, the kids outside the box whose world has been changed by the power of music,” the Wakefield born singer says.

These days Louise has more than an acoustic guitar. ‘Outside of You’ comes with the added dynamics of a full band. But she insists that the ethos remains the same – a focus on ‘nu-punk’ for the new generation.

While the undeniable quality of Louise’s music stands her in good stead for any scraps she gets into this year, her perceived status as a ‘protest singer’ is up for debate.

“Growing up as a young working class woman in a post-Thatcher era, these songs and poems reflect that environment,” she says. “The gatekeepers of the music industry have tried to call these protest songs, which is a label that I don’t understand because I’m just passing on my experience as a human being growing up in these apocalyptic conditions of unemployment and apathy.

“You have to wonder why someone simply speaking their mind is considered a protest in the first place,” Louise continues, before conceding that the honesty and personality that fuel her art can both be utilised as powerful weapons in today’s culture of suppression.

You can be sure Louise will carry on saying what she thinks and feels in 2017, as she plays her part in what she describes as “the street revolution”.

‘Outside Of You’ is released as a taster for Louise’s as yet untitled sophomore album.

Following the huge critical acclaim that greeted her debut, ‘Dreams from the Factory Floor’, the single offers a small glimpse of what’s to come. The second album will, she says, “take my songs to a new level with harder hitting lyrics and harder hitting concepts.”

The artistic call to arms has begun, and from humble beginnings, Louise Distras is leading from the front!
