VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: Hannah Aldridge video for single ‘No Heart Left Behind, tour in July 2017

0

In literature and in songwriting, the American South is where writers go to face their fears. Hannah Aldridge doesn’t just dip her pen into the well of the South, the Muscle Shoals native embodies it. With every song, she’s facing down demons of a life once lived from substance abuse to failed relationships and scars from the lashes of the bible belt.

‘Gold Rush’ is Hannah Aldridge’s second album, a follow up to her 2014 debut ‘Razor Wire’. While that album launched her career, drew the attention of music writers and sent her touring across the world, the new album shows a more mature and introspective artist with more life experience – and music experience – under her belt.

“I start writing with ‘this is how I’m feeling and I need to talk about it.’ Doing that helps me sort out my own thoughts on it. My music is an introspective look at the things that happened in my life. It’s me trying to sort through and put feelings into words,” she said.

Hannah Aldridge is the daughter of Muscle Shoals legend Walt Aldridge. An Alabama Music Hall of Famer, Walt Aldridge is a prolific and decorated songwriter of countless Number One and Top Ten hits recorded by the likes of Lou Reed, Reba McEntire, Travis Tritt, Earl Thomas Conley, Ricky Van Shelton, Ronnie Milsap, and Conway Twitty.

Mixing her personal life and the sounds of her hometown, Hannah Aldridge’s new album also draws in influences from across the rock genre. Working with people with one foot in country music and one foot in rock, Hannah Aldridge makes a fresh kind of Southern Rock styled by Southern Gothic storytelling. You can hear it in the new album’s ode to burning out, or in the yearning of ‘Burning Down Birmingham’, and anthem-for-the-lonely ‘No Heart Left Behind’ – a track that is shot-through with wild riffs.

Recorded at Creative Workshop in Nashville, Hannah Aldridge worked with Muscle Shoals writers such as Mark Naramore, Tosha Hill, Matt Johnson and Brad Crisler and artists such as Andrew Combs, Ashley McBryde, Don Gallardo, Ryan Beaver, and Sadler Vaden on ‘Gold Rush’. She teamed up with Jordan Dean and M. Allen Parker, who were instrumental in working on her new album, and finally finishing by calling on her Dad, Walt Aldridge, to master the record. In total, Hannah Aldridge compiled a team of distinct talents to work with her. With their help, Hannah Aldridge has put together a progressive, creative and memorable body of work.

“It’s about being self-destructive,” Aldridge said of her new album. “That is the underlying tone. The album goes back to when I was younger, and after touching on that, to now. In ‘Aftermath,’ the very first line is: ‘I was born in a crossfire.’ It starts from day one.”

About The Little Unsaid

Recent winners of the Steve Reid InNOVAtion Award for boundary-pushing new music creators, The Little Unsaid have spent the last year travelling the UK and Europe, leaving audiences emotionally rapt with a live show that’s been described as ‘a thumping depth of passion, recalling the intensity and melancholic overtones of Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen.’

Led by Yorkshire-born songwriter and multi-instrumentalist John Elliott, the band have just completed their forthcoming album, Imagined Hymns & Chaingang Mantras, recorded with Radiohead engineer and acclaimed film score producer Graeme Stewart. Stewart’s touch lends a sweeping, cinematic quality to the album’s ten deeply personal songs, written during Elliott’s recovery from post-traumatic stress disorder after a year of ongoing personal trauma brought his life and music career to a standstill.

With a rigorous work ethic and a genre-spanning approach to songwriting that embraces elements of electronica, folk, jazz and alt-rock, it’s no surprise that Elliott and the band have attracted the attention of the Steve Reid Foundation, formed in honour of the ground-breaking Miles Davis and Fela Kuti drummer. Working with a diverse range of mentors through the foundation’s award programme, including Gilles Peterson, Floating Points and FourTet, the band are embarking on an album launch tour in the UK this spring, culminating in a return to major festivals including Glastonbury. It’s here on the live circuit that the band have steadily built their reputation for creating electric, emotionally-charged performances, and this remains where their hunger lies.

“These songs were all born out of a search for meaning in the darkness we all find ourselves in at some point in our lives,” Elliott explains, “and for me and the band, getting out there and sharing them with people is a really powerful thing. That magic that occurs when the music and the energy of an audience creates sparks, that’s what we’re always chasing. There’s an immense feeling of unity in those moments, and I think we all need that more than ever right now.”

TOUR NEWS: Joseph Parsons announces co-headline tour with Doghouse Roses for April 2017

0

Touring with latest release ‘The Field The Forest’ (out in the UK on 12 May 2017), accomplished the rock songwriter hits the UK this April for a run of shows the length and breadth of the country, with co-headliners Doghouse Roses.

Joseph is a prolific songwriter, recording artist and performer with over 20 commercial label releases. Both live and with his recordings, Joseph Parsons has always created his own unique sound. He brings a heart and soul to his songs through energy and emotional honesty, ranging from stories of people caught in hard times to uplifting songs of love and life.

Originally from the musical city of Philadelphia, Joseph Parsons has made his name by consistently delivering exceptional song driven albums alongside a rigorous touring schedule throughout Europe and the US, including last year’s successful tours of the UK and Germany with Doghouse Roses, with whom he tours across the UK again this Spring.

Performing as a duo for these shows, Joseph Parsons will be accompanied by the exceptionally talented guitarist, Freddi Lubitz.

Joseph Parson’s albums are always a journey for the listener and his most recent, ‘The Field The Forest’ (Blue Rose Records), is no exception. ‘The Field The Forest’, is a double EP package that focuses on two distinctive writing styles of Joseph Parsons. ‘The Field’ carries a lighter meditation on redemption & relationships. ‘The Forest’ is an adventurous, heavier rock toned EP that delves into topics of mortality, war and love. Presenting his new material as two bite-sized song cycles is a creative way of facing down the contemporary challenge to the album format. Vinyl junkies in particular will recognise the need at the end of side one, to flip over the disc and immerse into side two.

Joseph Parson’s music weaves elements of rock, folk & soul into his own distinct and authentic sound. Both as a solo artist, and also with his band, his stage shows are dynamic, spirited and deeply moving experiences. Catch the Joseph live at the following UK shows:

Joining Joseph and Freddi for the tour will be DOGHOUSE ROSES. The highly acclaimed folk/Americana duo from Glasgow formed by guitarist Paul Tasker and singer Iona Macdonald in 2006. The tenth anniversary of the Doghouse Roses was marked with the release of their third studio album, ‘Lost Is Not Losing’ (Yellowroom Music) in November 2016 which has subsequently gained superb reviews across the music press. On the week of its release it was album of the week on BBC Radio Scotland, and the Daily Express declared that it ‘delivers an extraordinary punch’.

Previous years have seen the Doghouse duo establish their reputation through the UK and Central Europe, touring on their own and as members of U.S. based alt-country collective The Willard Grant Conspiracy. Two full length studio albums released in 2008 (How’ve You Been All This Time?) and 2010 (This Broken Key) garnered critical acclaim with R2 magazine stating that the music “mines the best of Scottish and American musical influences”, while Rolling Stone Magazine said “In Iona Macdonald’s singing resides a loveliness that cannot be taught.”.

ALBUM REVIEW: Sandra’s Wedding – ‘Northern Powerhouse’

0

If I’m honest I wasn’t that sure about ‘Northern Powerhouse’ until I hit ‘Death Warmed Up’ during my skim listen – well you know we have to decide whether we review something somehow. A tale of couple falling apart in a dying town, this song grabbed my attention. Featuring an additional female singer, part country blues and a whole lot of clever lyrics, I listened to this quite a few times right there and then.

Having found a way into the album I went back and listened a whole lot closer. What is important here is the words – these songs are about relationships, unemployment and looking back at our lives. There’s humour and clever word play. Some of this is laugh out loud funny. Some of this is rather sad. And they all come with a distinctively northern slant.

OK so the words are important but these are songs right, so the music is important. For me I got hints of 80s’ singer/song-writer bands like Squeeze and The Housemartins and all sorts of folk and country. Oh and ‘Death Warmed Up’ grabbed my attention because it starts off sounding like one of my favourite bands Hijak Oscar (sadly no longer with us). It’s that dual male/female vocals and twangy guitar thing. What I really liked is that the band aren’t afraid to change musical styles to match the songs – from big rock song to country they do it all, and they do it really well.

So we have great words and great tunes played well. So what makes this quite as good as it is. Well it’s a grower, it charms you. It’s one of those sets of songs that creep up on you and worm their way into your head. Over my repeated listening I went from “well that’s quite nice” to “That’s some clever lyrics” to “why can’t I get that song out of my head”.

You could speed up this process by switching around the album to start off with. I’d suggest starting with ‘Death Warmed Up’, skip forward to ‘Death By Hanging’ for a bit of black humour. ‘Hollywood’ would be my next choice, a lovely rather sad tale of a former ship building town. And then go right to ‘Losing Faith’ – an indie rock song. The playing on this is fabulous. Now go right back to the start and listen to all the tracks, really listen because the words are really really important. You’re going to have your own favourite tracks because there’s something here for everyone.

I wasn’t sure I was going to like this album but I actually found I like it a lot and it’s not the usual sort of thing I go for. It’s the words you see, I love great lyrics, and these are great lyrics. Put these with music that is just well ‘right’ for the songs and it works for me. I’d recommend giving it listen, you could surprise yourself.

Wish I knew why they’re called Sandra’s Wedding though!

The album is now available on CD, iTunes, Amazon, Google Music and Spotify.

The info

Sandra’s Wedding are a four piece band based between Goole and Castleford. The band is Joe Hodgson (vocals) Jonny Hughes (guitars) Tom Hill (bass) and Luke Harrison (drums).

The band’s first two singles have received airplay across BBC Introducing stations, with both making the “Track of The Week” on BBC Introducing North Yorkshire and BBC Humberside respectively, along with airplay on many other local stations.

They made the front cover of the Pontefract & Castleford Express and the Goole Times recently after a bizarre twist – the actual MP for The Northern Powerhouse, Andrew Percy, somehow managed to hear the album, and stated on his Facebook page that “He enjoyed it so much that he would try and mention it in Parliament.” The band commented “We didn’t expect our demographic to be Conservative politicians, so we were quite surprised by this! It did manage to give us some rather unexpected exposure and interest”.

GIG NEWS: Sax Legend Snake Davis hosts night at The Civic Barnsley 5th May 2017

0

The Snake Davis Band (including vocals) joins together in this exhilarating show. Although Snake can play a multitude of instruments, including the guitar and didgeridoo, it is the flute and, foremost, the saxophone for which he is best known.

Currently living close to Barton, the father of three has been keen on music since his primary school years. He said: “I played the guitar and also sang in the school choir. I had a soprano voice in those days. I played the flute a little later but it wasn’t until I was about 19 that I picked up a sax…”

“Before I first began playing the saxophone, music was just a hobby but within three months of picking it up, everything was different. It became my whole life and it was like falling in love!”

Snake performs a myriad of classics such as Baker Street, Harlem Nocturne, Pink Panther and his own solos from Million Love Songs, Moving on Up, Search for the Hero and Change. What’s more, he also tells you a bit more about them, fascinating facts and insights into the music we already love.

Imagine a room full of the saxophone greats; Junior Walker, King Curtis, Clarence Clemmons, Charlie Parker, Michael Brecker and more. Snake can deliver them all; Sultry sax, searing sax, screaming sax, sexy sax, soulful sax. This show has it all. Slide on down to The Civic Friday 5 May to witness the magic of Snake Davis.

Snake Davis is at The Civic on Friday 5 May at 8pm. Tickets are £14 full price and £12 concessions.

The news comes as the four piece prepare to release their much anticipated sixth album on 21st April 2017. Bringing together their trademark hook-laden melodies and sense of urgency with off-kilter rock, soulful grooves and pop sensibilities, ‘Risk To Exist’ is a vital record for our times, raging against the dire state of world affairs in 2016 and crumbling political systems.

Watch the new video for ‘Risk to Exist’ here – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mStNOUpGcw4

Frontman Paul Smith says: ‘The album is, ultimately, about empathy. Some songs are simple messages of solidarity and others are fuelled by anger at the elitist, established order of British society. There’s a questioning of power throughout and a feeling that there must be a different way of structuring our society in order to alleviate inequality. Musically, the songs reflect more soulful and groove-based influences, allowing more space in the arrangements than ever before. The central idea is to align great pop melodies with songs that reflect the state of the nation.”

‘Risk To Exist’ (released April 21st on Daylighting/Cooking Vinyl) was co-produced by Tom Schick (Wilco, Beck, White Denim) and Maximo Park. Keen for the inspiration of unfamiliar surroundings after writing the album in their native North-East, the band decamped to Wilco’s studio, The Loft in Chicago, in Autumn 2016. Recorded completely live, the recording represents another bold stylistic step for the band after 2014’s Top 10 ‘Too Much Information’. Maximo Park have also enlisted Mimi Parker from acclaimed US band Low for the record, whose voice lends its inimitable warmth to five album tracks, including lead single ‘Risk To Exist’.

With 1,500,000 albums and four UK Top 10 albums under their belt to date, Maximo Park have once again shifted seamlessly into a higher gear. They have expertly crafted an infectious pop album for our time, confronting the crucial issues track by track, one monstrous hook at a time.

Following the record shop tour in April, the band will also embark on their first UK tour dates since 2014. Starting at Birmingham O2 Institute 1 on May 5th, the tour takes in London’s Royal Festival Hall on May 12th before ending on May 19th at Manchester Albert Hall.
