TOUR NEWS: Ward Thomas announce 22 date Tour  for Spring 2017

22 year old twins Catherine and Lizzy made history with their stunning major label debut when it reached the top spot in the U.K. Album charts, by becoming the first ever UK country act to achieve the feat. On top of that extraordinary achievement, the album stayed in the top five for three weeks: a rare accomplishment.

Written in Nashville in 2014, ‘Cartwheels’ was the song that kick started the entire writing process for the album. Reflecting on experiences of young women (and men!) everywhere, it tells the sad tale of someone who refuses to accept that a relationship is over. The heartbreaking story is brought to life by the sisters’ stripped back vocals and beguiling harmonies.

Ward Thomas were barely out of their teens when they became country crossover stars with their independently released 2014 debut album ‘From Where We Stand’ which sold over 25,000 copies in the UK.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Alabama 3 release ‘Blues’ and tour to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the band’s formation

0

‘Blues’, released on CD, vinyl and available to download, is their thirteenth long player and was recorded and co-produced with Wizard (Chemical Brothers, Dizzee Rascal, X-Press 2, Wiley, DJ Fresh, M.I.A./Diplo, Chase & Status) at Dean Street Studios. The ten tracks here are full of their trademark chain gang clarion calls, bittersweet dope laments, sleazy whiskey rhythms, wailing harmonicas and the obligatory Delta slide. Possibly their most complete and finest album to date, this is essentially a straight up Rock’n’Roll record and is all the better for it!

After two glorious decades, the Alabama 3 line up of Larry Love (lead vocals), Rev. D Wayne Love (vocals), Rock Freebase (Guitar), Steve Finnerty (Guitar), Wizard (Decks), L.B. Dope (Drums), Rev Be Atwell (Backing Vocals), The Spirit Of Love (Keyboards) and Harpo Strangelove (Harmonica) are as relevant as they were when they formed in Brixton and set about crafting their groundbreaking debut album ‘Exile On Coldharbour Lane’. They’ve since released a string of genre defying albums and have continued to thrill audiences all over the world while many of their contemporary’s have imploded or simply disappeared.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: The Pigeon Detectives release fifth album ‘Broken Glances’ 24th February and March/April 2017 dates

0

Formed in 2002 The Pigeon Detectives are Matt Bowman on lead vocals, Oliver Main and Ryan Wilson on guitars, Dave Best on Bass, and Jimmi Naylor on drums. Friends from school and having known one another since they were 12 the band enjoyed a meteoric rise starting in Leeds where they signed with Local label Dance to the radio, and growing into the UK Music scene rapidly with their first record ‘Wait for Me’ going on to sell over half a million records and resulting in headlines at London’s Alexandra Palace and Leeds’ Millennium Square arena one year after release.

‘Broken Glances’ is a more eclectic LP than previous albums and was recorded with Richard Formby; a producer associated with bands like indie crooners Wild Beasts, leftfield London vocalist Ghostpoet and ‘mind-expanding synth pioneers’ Spaceman 3. Speaking about the move to work with a more leftfield producer singer Matt Bowman says

‘We wanted to work with someone that would challenge us in the studio and put us out of our comfort zone, not let us take any easy ways out with songs. Richard did this and made us change our approach completely from previous records. We ended up ditching a lot of tunes that had a sound that could have been on the first albums as a result.’

There is also a more reflective theme throughout ‘Broken Glances’, with the band having spent years touring songs from their youth they describe as ‘aspirational’ they are now writing more about the experiences they’ve had and documenting where they’ve been. A theme that is apparent in album tracks like the brooding ‘Postcards’, the claustrophobic ‘Wolves’ , and the sparse arrangement and raw lyrics of ‘Falling in love’.

Touching on the themes of the album Matt explains the shift in the band’s outlook:

‘We’ve spent a decade writing songs for our fans, songs they could scream out loud to and go wild to at gigs! On this album we felt we owed it to them to actually deliver something real that documents the journey we’ve all been on together. With this record we sat back from it a bit and it created more freedom to write without any kind of agenda, and with more emotional ups and downs across the album. That’s why these songs don’t necessarily smack you straight in the face like previous albums. But if you listen hard enough and take some time over the record..you’ll realise it’s an ode to everyone that’s ever bought an album or turned up to a show”.

‘Broken Glances’ follows platinum selling debut record ‘Wait for Me’ (charted at number 3 in the UK album chart), gold selling ‘Emergency’, third record ‘Up guards and at em!’ (all released on renowned Leeds label Dance to the Radio), and ‘We met at Sea’ (released through Cooking Vinyl Records). As with previous albums ‘Broken Glances’ is accompanied by a UK tour, with the band’s dedicated live following able to catch them at UK Festivals in 2017 following the album’s release on 24 February.

GIG & SINGLE NEWS: Vukovar play Golden Lion Todmorden 12th November, release ‘The Three Shades’

0

‘The Three Shades’ features – and quite how the band managed this we don’t know – 80’s cult movie star, ‘Queen of the B’s’ Dawn Wildsmith. Vukovar’s release is accompanied by the b-side ’33/08/45 Mourning of the Conqueror’. There’s also a mesmirising video which you can view right here on this page.

We asked our writer Frank – who reviewed the band’s album ‘Voyeurism’ – what he thought about the single.

“‘The Three Shades’ is – and I’m not apologising for using this word – beautiful. You might not get this right from the start but it’s going to creep up you. Musically this is both classic post-punk – heavy on the bass and snare drum – and a droney, psychy thing going on on top – there’s a lovely light vocal and what sounds like a mono synth holding it together. And then there’s the layers of heard and barely heard voices. While you may be thinking that heavy bass and snare can’t be beautiful, here it is. It’s what that foundation has layered on top of it, and how those layers are put together, that is wonderful.

“I just found myself sinking further and further down into the music as it washed over me. Frankly, four and a half minutes of this is nowhere near enough.

“The b-side ’33/08/45 Mourning of the Conqueror’ is a haunting tone-poem. It sounds like some incidental music from one of those strange 60s horror films. It’s both moving and strangely scary. And very very hypnotic.

“I said this in my album review but this is music that rewards you if you really listen to it, there’s a lot going on it Vukovar’s music that you might not get on your first, second or even third listen”.

The single is available as a free download on Bandcamp

Described as songs with a play, ‘Really Really Want’ tells the tale of a group of middle-aged women, who find themselves increasingly imprisoned by work, relationships, their own inner voices and drawers full of control underwear. Together they come to the only logical solution – form a girl band.

Lisa-Marie Baker who alongside her sister Catherine Cowan founded Vesper Walk says:

“The band started trending the theatrical boards two years ago when we took The Fallen Angel Show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, since then we have been working on weaving a multitude of art forms together. Really Really Want is funny, examines the joys of your average mid-life crisis, poignant, and filled with original quirky songs that Vesper Walk are known for. We have been working hard to create a highly entertaining and thought provoking show, which we hope to take to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017..”

The show which will be performed by professional musicians and actors Lisa-Marie Baker, Catherine Cowan, Lucy Charnock, Amie Robertson, Joyce Griffiths and joining the Vesper Walk cast for the first time – Katie Western and Joanna Huntington.

GIG NEWS: Chango Spasiuk – Accordion Magic & Deep Swing

0

At home in Argentina, Chango Spasiuk is considered the new hero of chamamé, the music ‘with the deepest swing in Argentina’; a warmhearted, accordion-based style that taps into native Guarani, Spanish, Criollo and Eastern European roots. Its natural home is the red lands and lush jungles of north-east Argentina, where Spasiuk was born to a family
of Ukrainian immigrants.

A fiery and sensitive virtuoso on his accordion, he brings rare charisma to his live performances: his rapt, dervish-like stage presence and his extraordinary ensemble make for music of profound beauty and feeling, infusing melancholy with resilient optimism.

Winner of a BBC World Music Award and nominated for a Latin Grammy, Spasiuk makes a long awaited return to Britain with this autumn tour – not to be missed!

The Line-up

This year’s headliners are none other than Geaorge Clinton with Parliament Funkadelic. George Clinton one of the inventors of funk music is one of the last of the A-list in a category of greats that includes James Brown, Bob Marley, Prince, Otis Reading, Miles Davis, Fela Kuti! And guess what – he still has one of the most electric live shows out there! Playing with the 16 piece Parliament Funkadelic, one of the tightest bands in history, expect all the big tracks!

What you hear is not a test, the mighty Sugar Hill Gang will be in town! No doubt their performance of ‘Rapper’s Delight’ will be a massive highlight.

Another gamechanger coming to Camber is The Sugarhill Gang – although credited as being one of the groups to have actually invented hip hop in the late 70’s, you listen to records like Rapper Delight and it could equally stand up as a straight-up funk record! This is a chance to see genuine pioneers, with the surviving original members. A piece of history featuring some of the biggest dancefloor bangers performed live!

Good times ambassador Norman Jay rejoins along with the undeniable Mr Scruff. The psychedelic quintet taking the UK by storm, Flamingods will also be providing a spectacular live performance with Wormfood’s United Vibrations & Nubiyan Twist.

It doesn’t get more soulful than UK legend Omar, who adds his signature sound to the bill alongside Akua Naru, delivering her undisputed live show.
