FESTIVAL NEWS: Rebellion Festival returns 6th-9th August 2020

Although the memories, the hangovers and the hearing loss of this August’s immensely successful Rebellion Festival are still vivid and fresh, with hardly a pause for breath, the Rebellion Family are already hard at work planning next year’s event and 39 bands have already been confirmed for 2020.

Scheduled to take place Thursday August 6th to Sunday 9th 2020 at it’s home, the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, Rebellion Festival is now wildly recognised as the largest gathering of punks in the world and continues to grow every year.

2019 saw one of the most prestigious line-ups yet, with iconic acts from every corner of the globe rubbing shoulders with a multitude of thrilling up and comers. The Stranglers, Descendents, Fear, Spear Of Destiny, The Damned, The Skids and many more all topped the stages and left lasting impressions. Although very much at the early stages of booking, the bands confirmed for the 2020 event already include some surprises and many returning favourites. Jimmy Pursey’s legendary herberts Sham 69 will be returning to the festival for the first time since 2015, whilst former Crass frontman Steve Ignorant will be performing a full Crass set. Also returning are The Dickies, Angelic Upstarts, GBH, Anti Nowhere League, UK Subs, Neville Staple Band, The Boys, Scream, Toxic Reasons, MDC and many more.

AMONG THE CITIZENS have announced a new single ‘In Your Car’, set for release on 11th October 2019 amidst a run of UK headline shows.

Proving it’s not all about your Vorsprung durch Technik, the East Anglia four piece switch it up a gear with a sleek and essential new addition to their repertoire.

Fitted-out with the slick manoeuvrability of Two Door Cinema Club at their performance-best and hued with the neon glow reminiscent of Phoenix’s indie-electronica essentials, ‘In Your Car’ sounds at once tangibly classic and vibrantly modern.

With production by the esteemed Jon Hucks (Spring King, Years & Years) and with additional mastering by Mike Cave (Lewis Capaldi, Charlatans), ‘In Your Car’ sees the pair take the wheel to deliver one of Among The Citizens’ most polished and electrifying releases to date.

Among The Citizens are an indie/alternative band based near Peterborough, UK. Inspired by a range of artists from new-wave luminaries The Cure and Echo & The Bunnymen, to the distilled atmospheric indie-pop of more contemporaries such Jaws and Hunny, the quartet channel their influences into their own definitively dreamy sound. Infusing lush synthesisers, infectious chorus-washed guitar lines and impassioned vocals, the band have caught the ear of radio supremos the likes of Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson (BBC 6 Music), BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio who have all spun their tracks to date.

FESTIVAL NEWS: Musicport Festival 2019 – Late additions

With less than 4 weeks until the 20th Musicport Festival founder and director Jim McLaughlin believes it is the strongest line-up in its 20-year history. With over 3/4 of the tickets sold people are advised not to wait too long before booking as there is no guarantee there will be tickets on the door. There are also still spaces at Indoor camping for those wanting to get the full festival experience (although admittedly it does have central heating, full kitchen facilities and showers).

Jim McLaughlin says “We are really excited by this year’s programme … there are too many potential highlights to actually single out any in particular as in lots of ways this can be seen as a “Best Of Musicport” line-up to celebrate our first 20 years. We are also expecting to be able to announce a major new initiative at this year’s festival which will provide the basis for major developments to take the festival forward for the next 20 years. “

Late additions to this year’s published line-up include :

· Lemn Sissay will be doing an additional performance on Sunday morning on main stage due to his current high profile (number one in The Times Best Seller list this week) as the theatre might be rather full for his Saturday one

· Paul Armfield – ‘A hidden treasure, heir apparent to deathless troubadours such as Tim Hardin ’Paul will be performing Saturday and will be involved compering and performing on the village tour (21st -25th)

· Phoebe Ophelia Douthwaite – “Finding Folk “(Arts Council funded and highly rated One-Woman Theatre Show). A late stand-in for Talaro who had visa refused twice.

· Fie Fie Fie – They got a standing ovation when they last played the festival.

· Lence – Impressive young Leeds rapper closing Friday late on North Sea Stage

· The FM Organ – a playable drone instrument, built by Yorkshire artist Napoleon IV -using 10 FM transmitters and 27 FM radios. It will be installed in the basement of La Rosa Hotel just over the road from the main venue and free to view /interact with throughout weekend.

· Old Time Rags who brilliantly uphold the traditions of Vaudeville, music hall and classic street entertainment.

· A showing of the film of Jeremy Hardy at Musicport ’16 as a tribute to the much-missed comedian.

A whole programme of workshops is now confirmed including the following : Salsa Dance Political Conflict Resolution Through Play , Magic , Cookery Demonstrations ( Randall Romero & guests) Indian Singing, Group Singing , Bollywood Dance , Drum Circle , Somatics , Tai Chi ,Hang Drum Flat Dance, Musical Saw, Spoons. Poetry (John Hegley) and Meet The Artist Sessions (with Ian Clayton)

Young people’s activities: The Makee Marquee has a variety of activities including “Create your own Desert Island” and “Weave Away”, while Captain Kipper will entertain with his special brand of tale-telling and magic – ooh aaarrrr! There will be pop-up magic too from Paul Bower, and a special percussion workshop on the Blundabus … plus henna t-shirts and a junk instrument workshop led by Maurice of the Really Rubbish Orchestra from Northern Ireland.

SINGLE REVIEW: Persian Rug Sale – ‘Summer Holiday’

So I reviewed a single – ‘Left Behind’ – from Huddersfield Punks Persian Rug Sale back in April, that was a blast of joy. I went and saw them play a packed Northern Quarter in Huddersfield, and that was a sweaty riot. So they have have a lot to match with this new single, I needn’t have worried this is a brilliant thing.

‘Summer Holiday’ is a punky thing, a punky singalong thing. And the words of this song are great, they tell a story, they’re sharp and witty. Jack – the band’s singer singer – who I assume writes the lyrics has a way with words. Look any song with the lines ‘I’ll spend the day reading Chomsky, sitting in the sun until the day is done’ is a fantastic thing. And it’s even better when it’s delivered in that sneery drawl that Jack is using.

And musically this track switches – it’s all punky, then it kinda drops outs for this talk singing section – which is where the lines above come from – and then it get gets all sweet harmonies over a pounding beat. It rocks people.

‘Summer Holiday’ is like a condensed version of what Persian Rug Sale do in their songs, it contains all the elements – the punky stuff, the punky sneery rap type stuff – that their songs have all combined into one brilliant, so brilliant, song. It just confirms my believe that Persian Rug Sale deserve to be huge. Stop reading and go listen now.

The Civic has announced that on Saturday 28th September, they will host their first ever Northern Soul All-Dayer. In partnership with Junction 36 Soul Night, the event will take place in The Civic’s Assembly Room. Expect eight hours of Crossover Classics, Rare 70’s and Modern Anthems from DJs Mick Glover, Dean Webb, Kevin Bruce, Mark Benton, Alan Bagshaw, John Hodgson and from Radio Scarbrough’s Soul programme, Kai Rivers.

SINGLE REVIEW: Uncle Buzzard ‘Big Cat’ / Faux Pas ‘That’s My Ego’

Another banger of a release from Come Play With Me (and for those who don’t know CPWM is a not-for-profit label set up to showcase and develop new music made in/around Leeds).

I reviewed Uncle Buzzard’s ‘Hotel Room’ some time back and ‘Big Cat’ has that warped sound thing going on, although it’s much much more warped, kinda swooningly trippingly warped. It’s a beast of many changes. It starts sounding like something from a 70s’ ITV vaguely trendy synth led tv theme but it changes and changes – it even has something that sounds suspiciously like a rock guitar solo, and then it has this lovely trippy atmospheric ending. And this thing has tunes to die for. This is one strangely earwormy track. This makes it sound like a mess of ‘different sections’ but it isn’t, no way, it’s all arranged and played so well that it sounds seamless. It’s huge people.

I’ve not reviewed any recorded material by Faux Pas but I did see, and be hugely impressed, by them playing live. ‘That’s My Ego’ reminds me vaguely of Placebo at points, but that’s only slightly vaguely. This track is a riot of guitar, raw guitar, and pounding drums. Beyond that I really loved the vocals on this, they have a slightly sneery world weary sound I really like. And yep it does that alt-rock quiet/loud thing but the quiet bits are intimate and beautiful and the loud are punk raw people. It has edge.

Played back to back these two tracks don’t seem to have anything in common – I guess that isn’t CPWM’s intent – but they do hang together somehow, hard to say how, but they do.

Uncle Buzzard are George Manson (Lead Vocals and Keys), Danny Blackburn (Drums), Charlie Howard (Guitar and Synth), Greg Lonsdale (Bass), Jake Williams (Guitar). Since forming in late 2017, the band have released through various labels including Bowl Cut Records and Monomyth Records. They all live in the same house and most of them are life long friends, working through rock, hardcore and angsty indie phases before reaching the
swooning-synth based indie they produce today.

Faux Pas are Ru Cowl (Vocals, Guitar) Lewis Egdell (Guitar) and Joey Leyland (Drums). Speaking about the track, singer + guitarist Ru explains “That’s My Ego is about defiance and control. I feel like there is a really small number of things that we really have control over and I think it has a really profound effect on people, mostly negative. I find that a lot of our generation find this frustrating and end up self medicating through drugs and alcohol in an attempt to sedate themselves. Being sedated is bliss but it allows people to basically settle for a life they don’t want without the self belief that they can change things.”

Ru continues “I find a lot of inspiration in the people around me every day, truly remarkable people who have overcome more than anyone should, to find their own success. This song is about taking control of who you are and addressing the struggle of those who feel they cannot. For me Faux Pas is a way of just saying “fuck it im gonna kick the shit out of this guitar for thirty minutes and I’m gonna love doing it.” It used to be a lot more about anger and hatred and whilst the themes of despair for our surroundings are still present it’s more about promoting the feeling of community”.

Following its premiere on Kerrang! Radio, Fresh Blood With Alex Baker and their intimate launch show at the Gibson Guitar Showroom in London, Press to MECO are excited to share their explosive new single ‘Easy Life’, out now on Marshall Records.

Recorded and produced by Richard Craker (DAGNY, Liam Gallagher) and mixed by Shane Edwards (Trophy Eyes, The Libertines), ‘Easy Life’ is the culmination of the Press to MECO’s collective frustrations navigating the turbulent world of the music industry, while having the guts and artistic integrity to stick it out and stay true to yourself.

“‘Easy Life’ was the first song we’d written after the ‘Here’s To The Fatigue’ album, at a pretty low point for all of us. The song talks about becoming disillusioned with the dream you’re pursuing and second-guessing the path you’re on. I liked the idea of comparing the dream to a bad relationship which you know you should give up on, but can’t bring yourself to leave. Obviously, working in the music industry comes with a lot of self-doubt and stress about whether you’ll become successful or not. This song was a good opportunity to vent about this and describe how these feelings can get to you after some time. That being said, ‘Easy Life’ is one of my favourite things we’ve written to date and serves as a good reminder of how fulfilling writing and performing your own music can be. We worked with our talented friend Richard Craker as the producer who we also worked with on the acoustic EP released earlier this year. It’s a great creative relationship we have with him and one we’re hoping to build on in the future.”

Press to MECO is a 3 piece rock band from Crawley/Croydon on a relentless pursuit to harness their sound into a punchy, driving and visceral powerhouse; performing off-kilter, unreasonably catchy songs that are full of twists and turns. A must-hear epilogue to the cinematic showdown that was ‘Matador’, ‘Kids Addicted’ is a brand new addition to the Red Rum Club arsenal. SINGLE REVIEW: Niall Summerton – ‘Love Like Ours’

The press blurb that came with this described this as indie-folk but it’s honestly more indie-country. It has that country twang in it’s gentle poppy feel. Describing it as indie-anything kinda roots it in the now but it’s timeless, it’s not ticking the box of any current genre really. Yes, it has something of a 70s’ ballad in there but it’s an influence not a retro thing at all.

It’s a beguiling thing, I fell in love with this song about 30 seconds in. The fantastic arrangement and Niall’s voice are just beautiful. In my first listen that’s the effect it had on me but repeated listening gave me more to love – some rather lovely backing vocals, the voices buried deep in the sound as it comes to end, a better appreciation of the guitar on the track. It’s so understated musically that it makes you listen all the more closely to it, it draws you in.

And the closer you listen, the more you listen to the words which are great. The story of the song isn’t conveyed through vocal gymnastics or overblown music but gently. This is a song you need to listen to properly.

It has that late Summer night chill-out feel, it’s something you can listen to quietly as you come down from being out, perhaps with one final drink (mine’s an aged single malt with peaty notes by the way). It just makes you feel relaxed and calm.

Look you need to listen to this, it charms you with its beauty, it’s gentle and understated feel.
