SINGLE NEWS: French For Rabbits have released a new single to coincide with a UK Tour in October 2017

0

‘It Will Be Okay’, the follow up to the recent ‘One And Only’ single, was recorded and self produced in Wellington and Christchurch and is available now to download at all the usual major outlets.

Taking inspiration from the likes of Beach House and Hundred Waters, the new single is a beautifully crafted break-up song that’s heart breaking yet strangely uplifting. Without doubt their most expansive and cinematic sound to date, the new single is a hint of what to expect from the band’s forthcoming second album.

French For Rabbits have also announced that they will play six UK shows in October, their first British dates since the release of their debut album ‘Spirits’ in 2014. They start the tour at The Mash House in Edinburgh on the 9th of October and wind up at the Old Blue Last in London on Monday the 16th of October.

Originally formed in Waikuku Beach in 2011 by Brooke Singer (piano, guitar, vocals) and John Fitzgerald (guitar), the duo have since moved to Wellington and are now a quintet following the addition of Ben Lemi (guitar, vocals, bass), Hikurangi Schaverien-Kaa (drums) and Penelope Esplin (vocals, bass, keys, percussion). Since the release of their debut ‘Claimed by the Sea’ EP in 2012, their music has featured in The Vampire Diaries and Being Human and has picked up over 10 million listens online.

LIVE DATES:

OCT 09TH MASH HOUSE, EDINBURGH
OCT 10TH STEREO, GLASGOW
OCT 11TH THE DEAF INSTITUTE, MANCHESTER
OCT 12TH PATTERNS, BRIGHTON
OCT 13TH HY-BRAZIL MUSIC CLUB, BRISTOL

TOUR NEWS: Kerri Watt November/December 2017 tour

0

BBC Radio 2 A-listed singer songwriter Kerri Watt has announced her first ever headline tour, with 14-dates across the UK this November and December.

“I’ve spent the last couple of years supporting some amazing acts across the UK which helped me pick up fans around the country” says Kerri. “I’ve really seen a demand on social media for me to play some headline shows, so it’s definitely the right time for my first headline tour! I’m looking forward to seeing some familiar faces from previous tours plus hopefully some new fans since the release of ‘Old School Love.’ My last show is in my hometown of Glasgow… a perfect way to kick off the Christmas season!

This news comes off the back of Kerri’s recent single, ‘Old School Love’, her first for her new label East West Records (Warners). Whilst continuing to showcase her knack for writing a great hook, ‘Old School Love,’ marked a slight change from her previous two singles, the BBC Radio 2 play listed ‘Long Way Home’ and ‘The Wild’. With a more simple production and mellow instrumentation, it’s a love song that as its title suggests, plays homage to an old school sound. The melody let’s Kerri’s vocal shine, laying bare the honest accessible song writing that has already won her an army of loyal fans.

Over the past year, Kerri has been travelling across the world, performing and writing new material. This includes a track written and recorded with Embrace which she recently performed with them at their two night opening slot for Coldplay at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium – in front of 74,000 – her biggest audience yet.

Kerri’s tour kicks off on November 2nd – Tickets available now! www.kerriwatt.com/tour

FESTIVAL NEWS: Early-morning station gigs to kick off Marsden Jazz Festival 2017

0

Unsuspecting commuters will be treated to two early-morning jazz gigs at Huddersfield railway station on Friday 6 October to kick off the 26th Marsden Jazz Festival.

Location: Huddersfield railway station, St George’s Square, Huddersfield HD1 1JB
Date: Friday 6 October
Time: 7.30am – 9.30am

The Jeremy Platt Trio will perform at the station from 7.30am using a piano which has been donated to the station for passengers to play while they wait for their trains.

The 20-piece Greenhead College Big Band will then take over from 8.30am, helping to lift commuters’ spirits on their way into work.

The gigs will launch this year’s Marsden Jazz Festival which will see more than 150 hours of live music take place at 24 venues this weekend, including more than 70 free gigs.

A performance inside Britain’s longest canal tunnel and a gig featuring a Mercury Prize 2017 nominee are among the highlights.

Chas Ball, Chair of Trustees at Marsden Jazz Festival, said:

“We’re delighted we’re able to kick off this year’s festival with two gigs at the station, and it will be great to see the piano we’ve donated getting used by professional musicians.

“We’re encouraging people to use public transport to get to the festival, and our free jazz bus to get around while they’re there, so I hope festival-goers will try out the piano while they wait for their trains.

“It’s a really family friendly festival and I’d definitely encourage anyone who hasn’t been before to give it a go as the whole village comes alive with the sound of live jazz throughout the weekend.”

Andrew Croughan, Station Manager at TransPennine Express, said:

“It is great to be able to have a piano for public use as a new positive facility at the station. We are always looking for new ways to bring life to Huddersfield station beyond that of simply a place that people go through on their way to and from work.”

Kirklees Green councillor Andrew Cooper, who helped to arrange the donation of the piano to Huddersfield railway station, said:

“I’ve seen pianos for use by commuters being played at Sheffield, Leeds and London St Pancras stations and I was impressed by how they gave a showcase for local talent and entertained people on their way to and from work or holidays.

“Having a piano in one of the busiest railway stations in Yorkshire will provide entertainment to thousands of travellers and be a new element to the musical culture of our town.”

This year’s Marsden Jazz Festival, which is being supported by Arts Council England, Yorkshire Water, Charlesworth Estates Ltd and Kirklees Council, will include a one-off performance by Norwegian cellist and composer Maja Bugge inside the three-mile long Standedge canal tunnel.

Other highlights include a gig by Mercury Prize 2017 nominee Dinosaur, a world premier from Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year Arun Ghosh, and a performance by three world-renowned trombone players – including two-time Grammy award winner Michael Dease.

The festival will also include a Saturday street parade, featuring a nine-piece rock influenced brass band supported by children playing plastic trombones and trumpets, as well as an artisan market in Marsden’s Victorian park.

Performances will take place in the village’s pubs, clubs and other buildings as well as on four outdoor stages including the Grand Central Rail Marquee on the Bridge, overlooking the River Colne. The venue will host seven free gigs featuring youth and community bands during the festival weekend.

The festival’s New Stream gigs will also showcase new and experimental artists and include a three-hour mini festival at Marsden’s Royal British Legion on Saturday night. The gig will feature a triple bill of bands from the UK, Belgium and France in partnership with Match&Fuse.

Tickets for this year’s Marsden Jazz Festival are on sale now and can booked online at www.marsdenjazzfestival.com, by calling 0800 6125 649 or at the Mechanics Hall in Marsden throughout the festival weekend.

The full line-up of over 90 gigs is also available to view at www.marsdenjazzfestival.com/whats-on.

TOUR NEWS: 40 Years of Disco Show dates March 2018

0

For four decades disco has ruled the charts and dance floors and is currently stronger and more popular than ever! The ‘40 Years of Disco’ show is a high-energy hits only live extravaganza! The tour takes in 4 arenas across the country starting at Leeds First Direct Arena on 15th March and culminating on 18th March at Liverpool’s Echo Arena.

Disco started in the early 70’s in the clubs of New York with Studio 54, which opened in 1977, being the most famous. The same year the ‘Disco Fever’ album spent 6 weeks at No.1 and was still there at Christmas. ‘Native New Yorker’ by Odyssey became one of the first major disco hits and they also happen to be on this groundbreaking tour! By 1978 the ‘Saturday Night Fever’ album spent 18 weeks at No. 1 only to be knocked off the No.1 spot by another star act from the ’40 Year’s Of Disco’ tour – Boney M with their album ‘Night Flight To Venus’ (that also spent 4 weeks at No.1). In 1978 the ‘Best Disco Album In The World’ spent 6 weeks at No. 1. Disco has never gone away and is here to stay!

SISTER SLEDGE: The group sold millions of records worldwide with the album ‘We Are Family’ earning them multi-platinum status for sales in excess of two million in the USA alone – and going gold in several other countries. They went onto have multiple disco anthems that include the UK hits ‘Lost In Music’, ‘We Are Family’, ‘Thinking Of You’, ‘He’s The Greatest Dancer’ and the No.1 ‘Frankie’. At present Sister Sledge consist of original members Debbie and Kim alongside Tanya (niece of one of the original members).

TAVARES: For over two decades Tavares had several Top 10 UK singles. They won a Grammy Award for their work on the soundtrack to ‘Saturday Night Fever’ that was recently certified 15 times platinum. 1975 turned out to be their most successful year chart wise with their biggest US hit, ‘It Only Takes a Minute’ – later successfully covered by Take That and sampled by Jennifer Lopez. This was followed by a string of hits including ‘Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel’, ‘Don’t Take Away The Music’, ‘Whodunnit’, ‘More Than A Woman’, ‘One Step Away’, ‘The Ghost Of Love’ and ‘The Mighty Power Of Love’. They were inducted into the RI Music Hall of Fame in 2014. Earlier this year they performed on the CBS Television Special “Stayin’ Alive” – a musical salute to The Bee Gee’s where they performed a duet with R&B star Jason Derulo on ‘More Than a Woman’.

ROSE ROYCE: The LA group Rose Royce had a massive hit with ‘Car Wash’ which was on the album soundtrack of the 1976 movie of the same name that starred Richard Pryor and George Carlin. The 2 million selling soundtrack gave them a two further hits ‘I Wanna Get Next To You’ and ‘I’m Going Down’. The follow up album 1977’s ‘In Full Bloom’ featured the hits ‘Wishing On A Star’, ‘Do Your Dance’ and ‘Ooh Boy’, going platinum. Their third album ‘Rose Royce Strikes Back’ (1978) featured the killer ballads ‘I’m In Love (and I Love the Feeling)’ and ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’. Their greatest hits album reached the No.1 spot on two separate occasions in 1980 spending 34 weeks on the chart. Many major stars have covered their hits including Mary J Blige & Madonna who did a heart-wrenching version of ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’.

BONEY M: Everyone knows the name and everyone knows at least one of their songs. The group had massive worldwide hits with songs such as ‘Daddy Cool’, ‘Sunny’, ‘Ma Baker’, ‘Rasputin’, ‘Hooray! Hooray! It’s a Holi-Holiday’, ‘Belfast’ and ‘Painter Man’. Audiences worldwide have been thrilled by the energetic visual performances of all their well-loved songs. ‘Rivers of Babylon’/’Brown Girl In The Ring’ reached No. 1 for 5 weeks and stayed in the charts for an astounding 40 weeks. It is the 7th biggest selling single of all time in the UK, selling over 2 million copies. The band also had the Christmas No.1 that year with ‘Mary’s Boy Child’, which is No.10 in the biggest selling singles of all time, selling in excess of 1.8 million copies. They are also the only act to have 2 all time best sellers in the Top 10! This line up features original member Maizie Williams.

THE REAL THING: The multi-million selling soul band features their three original vocalists Eddie Amoo, Chris Amoo and Dave Smith who are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their debut hit single ‘You To Me Are Everything’ this year. The single reached No 1 in the UK. The trio have sold over 3 million singles that also include the hits ‘Can’t Get by Without You’, ‘Whenever You Want My Love’ and ‘Can You Feel The Force’.

ODYSSEY: One of the most successful soul/disco acts of their era that culminated in the early 1980’s when they topped the UK charts with ‘Use It Up And Wear It Out’. They scored several other Top Ten hits in Britain and throughout the world. From their debut album emerged their first smash single – ‘Native New Yorker’, an international hit late in 1977. After that the hits then came thick and fast – the long running ballad ‘If You’re Looking For A Way Out’, a brilliant re-working of the Lamont Dozier classic ‘Going Back To My Roots’ and ‘Inside Out’ amongst others.

GEORGE McCRAE: Was a prime mover on the early disco front. Disco kings Harry Casey and Richard Finch of KC & The Sunshine Band both produced and wrote his output with McCrae securing a hit on his first try with “Rock Your Baby,” it topped charts in 1974 around the world. Other hits include It’s Been So Long’, ‘I Ain’t Lying’ & ‘I Can’t Leave You Alone’.

VIDEO, EP & TOUR NEWS: Charlotte Carpenter video for new single ‘Shelter’, new 4-track EP out October 20th, dates October/November 2017

0

Charlotte Carpenter has released the new video for ‘Shelter’, the lead track from her new four-track EP to be released October 20th digitally and on 10” vinyl through her own imprint, Let It Go Records.

“The video for Shelter represents my personal journey of liberation of being a woman and a musician,” explains Charlotte. “It’s a long road, and when there’s life in one hand and a business in the other it can be sometimes hard to juggle but gradually you feel that confidence seeping in, where you know exactly what it is you want. I really wanted that to be conveyed on screen, so I pushed myself to perform in a way I haven’t before”.

Starting out slow and moody, Charlotte chugs openly on her guitar as the band build to a tantalising chorus before they cut back down again. ‘Shelter’ is dynamic and cinematic in its scope and vision and is one of Charlotte’s best creations yet.

“Musically, Shelter fell into a guitar driven song and by the time it was finished I’d realised it had a James Bond feel I wasn’t expecting at all,” continues Charlotte. “When we started the recording process we sort of looked that feel in the face and wanted to make it as cinematic as possible, and see the track as different scenes as well as a song. I wanted it to feel intense, desperate and give the listener a sense of yearning. I adore what we did with chamberlain section towards the end, it becomes really uneasy and probably why I feel like I’ve written some sort of unofficial Bond number.”

The EP is complimented by another new song called ‘Hey Mr Cowboy’, a tremolo shimmering breathy moment of pure blues angst that seeps straight into the listener’s heart, completed by previous releases ‘Fire’ and ‘Lately’, featured for the first time on vinyl.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Son Of Dave ‘Music For Cop Shows’ out 27th October, November/December 2017 dates

0

Son Of Dave is back with a new offering from upcoming album, ‘Music For Cop Shows’. ‘Daddy Was A Wolfman’ is iconic writing from the blues maverick, laying down a beatbox shuffle groove, then wild harmonica hooks and his usual wry wit and catchy vocals. Maybe this time there’s insight into who the daddy, Dave, is. Maybe not.

The track precedes upcoming album, ‘Music For Cop Shows’, Son of Dave’s 8th album. The album loosely ties ten new songs together as an imagined 1970’s cop show soundtrack. Several of Son of Dave’s tunes have already been placed in modern crime shows such as Preacher, Breaking Bad, and Bloodline, which appears to have been an inspiration for the album title. There’s no shortage of cryptic humour as usual.

The ‘Daddy Was A Wolfman’ video (directed/edited by Luke Parry) follows a recent theme of using old b-movie public domain footage mixed with animations from Steven Plunkett who’s captured the character in a half Mad Magazine, half Ralph Steadman kind of way. Just his own style really, but it helps some people to hear names.

Son of Dave will also be supporting the record with a full UK tour, followed by other European and North American touring (see dates and details below).

About the album

The artist himself on upcoming album ‘Music For Cop Shows’ says:

“I got the call from Mr. Big of Big Records, you know? They got another tune into yet another crime drama. They keep asking for more though. so I made this record for ’em. ‘Stick that in your soundtrack’.

“I fantasise ’bout making the theme song to a 1970’s cop show. Time travel is hard on this old Bluesman’s bowels however. These days, telly’s heavier and harder I think. Not many heroes. Even the news seems scarier. Maybe this will help things from being too damned serious. The truth is bloody awful enough, I hope you find this blues a bit sexier than rising crime rates and sponsored terrorism!”

PRE-ORDER HERE – https://sonofdave.lnk.to/musicforcopshows
AVAILABLE ON CD, LP & DIGITALLY

Recorded in London at Space Eko East Studios with long-time co-producer Alex McGowan the songs build upon S.o.D.’s usual beatbox and bass grooves layering up harmonica riffs just like in the live show. Some tunes go a bit further and S.o.D. plays keys, guitars, and all sorts of percussion. It’s all played and sung by the man himself, with “Blues Organ” and “Hey Aye” the only exceptions, being recorded with super-producer Jimmy Hogarth, with whom he made the album ‘Blues At The Grand’ a few years back.

The info

Son of Dave is fifty years old, and has lived for twenty-one years in the UK, hailing originally from Winnipeg Canada where he was steeped at a young age in the blues-bar tradition. His resumé is long, having had many other successes along the way. He plans to perform until his 80s at least, pointing out that there is no pension plan for Bluesmen, and that the whole live-fast-die-young game is for kids who can’t handle their booze (or for their managers simply after publicity). Returning to his roots in R&B, Son of Dave has racked up 1400 shows over 5 continents and released 7 albums. Over the years SoD has supported Supergrass, Iggy & The Stooges, UB40, Yardbirds, Heavy Trash and jammed with Spinal Tap and Neil Young, Cindi Lauper, Jon Spencer, and many more. No stranger to TV and Film, he has performed on Later With Jools Holland (BBC UK) and Taratata (France 1), whilst his music has also been used in the likes of Netflix thrillers Breaking Bad and Preacher. A maverick Bluesman. A one-man harmonica and beat-box experience.

EP & TOUR NEWS: Trudy and the Romance ‘Junkyard Jazz’ out 17th November, October/November 2017 dates

0

The upcoming Junkyard Jazz EP was recorded in former vicarage with Stockport’s Eve studios with producer David Pye.

“For a while I’ve wanted to write a record with the swagger of Jonathan Richman. Jonathan like the Beatles, Beach Boys and Springsteen cheers me up whatever the weather. My head was still a little mashed after someone I care about deeply got badly, Twist It, Shake It. Rock & Roll is a record for the stiff necks to lighten up a little; to love and understand what you actually want and not listen to the gang.

See where it goes with a new flame. A true friend loves you for who you are. I’m an old soul and I miss the old world.

Rock & Roll, shake up the world and get on with it. Don’t be cynical, try to not be boring.
Hopefully this record will stir up that melancholic purple in your heart and give you a big fat old grin whilst doing so.”

Junkyard Jazz EP is being released by B3SCI and will be available on all DSPs and limited edition 45 RPM 12″ vinyl on the 17th of November.

Trudy head off on a UK headline tour this autumn supporting The Fall in Newcastle and Happyness in London along the way.
