VIDEO NEWS: ‘Thank You, Friends: Big Star’s Third Live … And More’ released 21st April 2017

0

Concord Bicycle Music has announced the upcoming release of ‘Thank You, Friends: Big Star’s Third Live … And More. The 90-minute concert film, which celebrates the music of Big Star through an illustrious collective of musicians, had its world premiere at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Tex., on March 16.

It will be available in stores April 21, 2017 as a 2-CD/DVD or Blu-Ray combo pack, as well as a standalone, 2-CD album. Liner notes by GRAMMY® Award-winning writer Anthony DeCurtis and Chris Stamey (from the dB’s, and a founding member of the Big Star Third ensemble) will round out the package.

Big Star’s devastatingly beautiful third album has long been revered by artists and critics as one of the most influential records ever produced. Written and recorded when the legendary ’70s band was primarily a studio project consisting of guitarist Alex Chilton and drummer Jody Stephens, Third (or Sister Lovers, as it was alternatively known) had never been performed in public with the original string and wind arrangements. That changed in 2010, following Chilton’s untimely death just two days ahead of a much-anticipated Big Star performance at the South by Southwest Music Festival. That December, famous friends and fans assembled from far and wide to play a fully orchestrated Chapel Hill, N.C. gig in Chilton’s honour.

From there, the core players (including sole surviving Big Star member Jody Stephens, Mike Mills [R.E.M.], Mitch Easter [Let’s Active], Chris Stamey [the dB’s], plus the Posies’ Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer) took the show on the road internationally, enlisting guest stars and orchestras in each city, and performing not only songs from Third, but also material from Big Star’s first two albums, #1 Record and Radio City. That core ensemble, along with a star-studded cast of guest artists, assembled in April 2016 at Glendale, Calif.’s Alex Theatre for the epic concert seen in Thank You, Friends. Directed by Benno Nelson of Yes Equals Yes, the film includes performances by a who’s who of indie rock, including Jeff Tweedy and Pat Sansone of Wilco, Ira Kaplan (Yo La Tengo), Robyn Hitchcock, Dan Wilson (Semisonic), Benmont Tench, Jessica Pratt, Brett Harris, Django Haskins, and Skylar Gudasz as well as a full chamber orchestra helmed by San Francisco’s acclaimed Kronos Quartet and conducted by Carl Marsh, who wrote the original orchestrations for Third/Sister Lovers.

About Big Star:

Much like Nick Drake, the Velvet Underground, or other critically esteemed artists whose work only gained commercial traction long after its initial release, Big Star’s trademark mix of shimmering jangle pop with a side of elliptical melancholia was originally let loose into a world that just wasn’t ready for it. Formed in 1971 by singer/songwriters Alex Chilton (1950-2010) and Chris Bell (1951-1978), drummer Jody Stephens (b. 1952) and bassist Andy Hummel (1951-2010), the Memphis-based band is now considered to be one of the most influential bands in modern music, having inspired some of the biggest alt-rock artists of the ’80s, ’90s and beyond. An underground core of fanatical enthusiasts kept the fire burning. The Replacements famously released “Alex Chilton,” a song that paid tribute to Big Star’s songwriting genius. R.E.M.’s Peter Buck said, “Big Star served as a Rosetta Stone for a whole generation of musicians.”

Over the course of their time together, Big Star recorded three LPs with producer John Fry at his Ardent Studios. 1972’s #1 Record included the power-pop anthem “When My Baby’s Beside Me,” dreamy “Thirteen” and “In the Street” (famously covered by Cheap Trick for the theme of That ’70s Show). Radio City (1974), recorded after the departure of Chris Bell, featured “September Gurls” (covered by likes of the Bangles and Superdrag). In the fall of 1974, not long after the release of Radio City, and the departure of bassist Andy Hummel, Chilton and Stephens recorded a new album, which was shelved until 1978, after the group had disbanded. That mythic album was released as Third (later reissued under the name Sister Lovers as well), and has long been revered by artists and critics as one of the most influential albums ever produced. Third is included as one of Rolling Stone magazine’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”

Background

Geoff Love, a Todmorden musician, was born in Todmorden in September 1917, to a Todmordian mother and a father of African American and Native American descent. He was educated at Roomfield School in Todmorden along with his older sister who also received music tuition. He learnt the violin second hand from her and had free trombone lessons from his friend’s father, local doctor and Orchestra President, John de Ville Mather. His talent was obvious and he gave up his apprenticeship at 17 to play the trombone professionally, while still performing locally with the Todmorden Brass Band and the Todmorden Orchestra. After World War 2 he formed his own orchestra and went on to become a world renowned musical director. From Todmorden Town Hall to Northgate Leisure Centre and onto the Royal Albert Hall and Las Vegas, Geoff worked frequently with the likes of Dame Shirley Bassey, Dame Vera Lynn, Des O’Connor and Max Bygraves.

Despite his international fame his considered himself a Yorkshireman who owed it all to his upbringing in Todmorden; he used to return frequently to conduct Todmorden Brass Band in sold-out concerts. He was one of Todmorden’s first Honorary Citizens, donating one of his gold discs to the town. As a role model for young people across all cultures, he donated his trombone to Todmorden Orchestra so that other disadvantaged children could learn a musical instrument.

“Geoff Love, A Love Affair with Music” will shortly be available to pre-order.

EP REVIEW: Vanessa Maria – ‘Overslept’ EP

0

Vanessa Maria describes her début EP ‘Overslept’ as ‘a trip-hop mini-version of what was formerly known as a concept album. It takes the listener from the small hours to the late morning, expressing the complex feelings of a young person struggling to differentiate daydreaming from real dreams and nightmares’.

It is, if you’ll forgive me, a trip. There’s complex layered sounds, phone messages and all manner of stuff going on. It’s hugely effective and not at all mannered – ‘concept collections’ can all so easily sound too constructed. This is definitely something you’ll want to listen to in one hit.

While I’m not a huge fan of trip-hop this EP had me hitting repeat, and getting something new each time. This is a lovely ‘set’ of tracks that are hugely effective emotional and I really do recommend taking a listen.

One track from the EP – ‘Awakening’ – has been released as a video (you can see this above) and I asked my fellow LSF writer Henrietta to give me her thoughts. She said:

“There’s something fragile and tremulous about the start of this song which hooks my attention right away. It promises a track full of poignancy and pathos and I’m willing it to meet every one of my wildly unrealistic expectations. For some reasons I’m waiting for Bruce Springsteen’s Streets of Philadelphia, which is a bit crazy because this is trip-hoppy, R&B, heavy on the vocal inflections – but it’s got that same sense of intimacy and sadness, that says in big letters ‘This is a very meaningful song’. And don’t get me wrong, I’m not criticising Vanessa for this. it’s a damn good song and performed by a singer with considerable amount of talent.

“Maybe it’s the early mention of ‘drowning in bullshit again’ when I’m ready to get ridiculously ethereal, that throws me a little, but it’s an honest kind of message and the beauty of this song is its attention to detail and finding something positive in the mundane. And I just love the way Vanessa takes you through a whole range of downbeat and day to day experiences before socking you with an unexpectedly upbeat ending … ‘I am grateful… oh so grateful just to be alive.’ And no, it’s never cheesy. There’s a particular delicious moment when Vanessa stops singing to utter ‘Fuck – now I’ve missed the bus’ in her melodious Bradford accent, and I’d defy anyone not to smile at this.

“Vanessa has one of those singing voices that demands your attention. It’s got a edginess, and a combination of little girl naivety and world weary womanhood that draws you into the very heart of the song. Her voice crafts itself round her words and changes pace and mood as the story unfolds. There’s an underlay of sadness, but also a resilience and vibrancy that is quite simply infectious. As infectious as Vanessa herself. You have to see her on the video – smiling and smoking, her hair in a scarf and wearing what looks like a particularly elegant pair of 50s silk pyjamas – as much a naughty child as she is a self confident young woman – and you know this is someone who’d be great fun to spend some time with – witty, wise and reflective, at the same time.

“Catch this young artist while you can. I’m pretty sure she will soon be going places.”

EP NEWS: Hull’s Left Ahead to release ‘Man Kills Everything’ with launch at The Adelphi Hull on 5th April

0

Left Ahead are a 3 piece post-punk/alt-rock band from Hull who have been described as “sticking together the best parts of early Manics with the aggro snarl of classic Dead Kennedys”. That’s a pretty big rep to match but the lead track of the EP ‘Wage Slave’ (listen to/watch the video) is an impressive piece of work that certainly matches the description.

LSF has been lucky enough to catch a preview of the other two tracks on the EP and, while we can’t do a full review, for me the stand-out track is ‘HUS’ = a snarling piece of old-style punk in that Dead Kenndeys vein.

The new EP ‘Man Kills Everything’ can be found on Bandcamp, on the Warren Records website and most major online music outlets from the 5th of April.

You can listen to and buy the band’s 2016 EP ‘Dancing in Hell’ on Bandcamp.

The info

Left Ahead are:

  • Rudy on bass
  • Jack on drums
  • Ash on guitar/vocals.

They have supported a range of artists including: Hamell On Trial, The Lovely Eggs, 2 Sick Monkeys, TV Smith and XSLF. For fans of Black Flag, The Fall, Dead Kennedys, Sleaford Mods and Manic Street Preachers.
