TOUR NEWS: Elvis Depressedly April 2017 dates

0

Following on from the reissue of their cult favourite ‘Holo Pleasures’ EP and their incredibly successful first ever UK live shows early last year, Elvis Depressedly will be playing the following dates later this month:

Apr 23 – Brighton, UK @ The Joker
Apr 24 – Leeds, UK @ Brudenell Social Club
Apr 25 – Manchester, UK @ The Star and Garter
Apr 26 – London, UK @ Kamio

The info

Elvis Depressedly is Mathew Cothran and Delaney Mills. Mathew and Delaney live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

Elvis Depressedly stares straight into the void and airs their own blunt perceptions about it through their music, but it’s never been the band’s intentions to bring you down even if it says so right there in their name. Mathew Lee Cothran (also of Coma Cinema) and Delaney Mills – alongside a revolving cast of friends and collaborators – have been taking the monoculture’s obsession with a dystopian world and turning it into their own wry joke in their homespun quarters of South Carolina from the very beginning. Since 2011, EPs and singles built with a bare necessity of instruments and production tools have recorded a memory box of self-healing guitar-pop laced with an Ambien trance, but with Cothran quitting his day job and resettling in Asheville, NC with Mills after the release of 2013’s Holo Pleasures to focus his efforts on their latest full-length New Alhambra, an increased currency in time has resulted in Elvis Depressedly’s most definitive listen yet.

‘Holo Pleasures’ is a 12 minute cult favourite EP amongst the DIY scene and has spawned many bands from its sulky muddled influence, whilst in many ways, New Alhambra is an auditory homage to what has shaped lead singer Mathew Lee Cothran’s life. Its title, as any hardcore pro-wrestling fan will recognize, credits the Philadelphia arena that birthed its most legendary and extreme version of it, and the use of samples from wrestling shows serve as a reference to his upbringing. The album was characteristically made with outdated equipment and limited by only one microphone, with Mike “Dr. Vink” Roberts playing an essential role on bass that enrichens the rockier resonations in comparison to Elvis Depressedly’s previous releases. Cothran and Delaney were constantly on the move during the recording process thanks to their new found career freedom, but none of it takes away from New Alhambra’s fully texturized shift toward brightly melancholic noise-pop inspired by Cothran’s favorite unsung heroes such as Waterboys, Prefab Sprout and Emperor X, and in more conventional instances, Elliott Smith and Mac DeMarco.

Tickets from Revo and The Grayston Unity (no fee); Jumbo Leeds and on-line via Ticketweb.

Stage times: Vats: 9pm; Hornblower Brothers 10pm

The Hornblower Brothers are a four piece folk-punk band based in Brighton with a leaning towards off-kilter pop music. The band were formed in 2007 by high school friends Nat and Al, who left their native Halifax in search of musical prospects and a higher education. They later rigged in a few housemates during university days in Brighton, as well as a man they met on the street using dustbins as drums.

After getting seen at an early show by a representative of trend-setters Way out West Records, the band started touring and came to the attention of BBC6 DJ Steve Lamacq, later being championed by Jon Kennedy and Marc Riley.

The band released records on various labels before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2011. During that time Nat and Al continued playing together in various guises, eventually deciding to reform the ‘HBBs’ in late 2015 with different members Mikey ‘Basertron’ on keys and John ‘McAronie’ on bass guitar.

In 2016 the band gigged extensively and played a live session for Marc Riley on BBC 6Music. They have supported The Piranhas, Jeffrey Lewis and the Lovely Eggs.

A digital release of new songs ‘Counting Roadkill’, ‘Free Range’ and ‘Selfie’ will be available through Bleeding Hearts Recordings from August 2016.

VATS

Vats are an innovative 4 piece band proudly from Hebden Bridge. Although privileged by great local venues, homegrown music is something thats lacked in the area which is something they hope to change. The band are influenced by the sounds of from The Velvet Underground and The Kinks to the more contemporary Tame Impala and Courteeners, just to list a few, whilst also picking features from various other artists.

Over the four years since their formation they have had shit loads of experience playing at live events, from local yet prestigious venues such as the Trades Club to more afar locations such as the student union-run Manchester academy. They are gradually expanding out into other areas but are still rooted in the Calder Valley.

Stage times: The Tiny Minds 9pm; Qujaku 10pm

QUJAKU are a Japanese psychedelic band formed in 2013 and based in Shizuoka, Japan. Their music is gothic dark shoegaze, which reminds you of The Horrors, but it also contains emotional expressions that Japan uniquely has, leading you to feel Scandinavian post rock like Sigur Ros. Aesthetic but also destructive, roar but also silence, QUJAKU are a rare newcomer that has two opposite elements at the same time. They released their debut album, ‘ZyouK’, from So I Buried Records in October 2015 and a new EP, ‘Keiren’, in April 2016, heading to deeper psychedelia.

Tiny Minds

The Tiny Minds are based in the creative town of Hebden Bridge (home of The Trades Club) have been working hard on their unique sound, creating over 40 tracks that are now getting perfected and recorded. Beneath the sonic waves of their funky fresh pop surface, the entity of The Tiny Minds, continues to evolve as their unique composure delves deeper and spreads wider.

Catch a glimpse of The Tiny Minds when they come up for air; a groove-based guitar-pop quartet for everyone to enjoy!’ The Tiny Minds are: Duncan Foster (lead singer/ guitarist, Tom Foster (Bass/Backing singer) Joe Ackroyd (drums) Brian Bryson (Keyboards/Percussion)

*Little facts of the band, Duncan and Tom are brothers and are from Sheffield originally. Joe and Brian have grown up together in Hebden Bridge. Tom and Joe lived together in Manchester with occasional visits from Duncan, were they started jamming together. They moved to Hebden Bridge and this is when the band was formed a few years ago, Brian joined the band in the 2016.

0

The band say:

Hello World… On April 18th 2017 we are releasing a brand new music video for our song ‘Bad Egg’ and we want you to help us with this!

Our ‘fans’, ‘followers’, ‘friends’ have been the biggest supporters of our music so far. All of you have helped crowd fund our entire album release and through buying our music and band merchandise you have helped us fund our music going forward, including plans for Germany, which we couldn’t have done without you!

We strongly believe in people power, we figured we could have more success with you behind us, than the overpaid and underperforming PR guys that a band at our level can afford. We want to take that same crowd funding approach and use it to help us create a massive BOOM behind our video release!

So, all we ask is that pledge your support by being willing to send out just one Tweet or FB post on April 18th when the video releases! All you have to do to make this happen is help us reach our minimum goal of 250 supporters by the video’s release date and Thunderclap will do the rest!!

PLEASE NOTE: If you can add a personal message with your post that would help us SO SO much more because people then would know to trust the link and not see it as SPAM and ignore it!!! Example: “Been following this band for a while now, check out their new tune”!

Now you are probably wondering what the hell is THUNDERCLAP… and putting the hilarious name aside let us tell you that THUNDERCLAP is a perfect way for us to make some noise in sea of cute cat videos, Donald Trump memes and everyday clutter… causing a huge HOG bomb! Everyone who joins the campaign will automatically share our video on Facebook or Twitter at 3pm, as it’s released on Tues 18th April. Pushing it our to thousands of news feeds at the same time!

We’ve never done anything like this before so we are relaying completely on YOU taking part and helping us achieve 100% of our goal. We don’t need a label, we don’t need a big production team, we don’t need radio… we can do this together! Sign up now and help our little HOG bomb blast the net in a few days… oh and we really hope you like our new video!!!

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Katalina Kicks ‘Vices’ released 12th May, tour dates for May 2017

0

Whetting appetites in the run up to the new album, the band accompany the announcement with the release of adrenaline-laced new single and featured track: ‘Cut It Up’.

The new album, Vices, presents Katalina Kicks at their loudest, scuzziest and most politically aggrieved yet. But then opening with a “cameo” from Donald Trump, how could it not be?

Fans of the band will already be familiar with the Seattle-sized quake of teaser single ‘Guns’, a track written after watching Obama’s tearful reaction to the Sandy Hook school shooting. “It’s a song of despair,” frontman Ian George says of the track. “The most powerful man in the world, and even he can’t stop the gun madness in his own country. And then after the Paris attacks, Trump said that terrifying quote about if people had guns, less people would have been hurt. So we sampled that just to show the absurdity.”

In support of the new album, the band will be hitting the road for a series of UK dates this May (see below). Offering insight into what to expect from the new album and forthcoming tour frontman Ian George says:

“We’re so excited about this album, as it has a real mix of songs and flavours – from our trademark high octane punk rock to slightly more chilled and sophisticated tracks, but all played with the same attitude! After spending a fair amount of last year in the studio, we’re really looking forward to getting on the road again and playing this new material to everyone.”

In addition, Katalina Kicks are delighted to announce they will be teaming up with fashion giant Paul Smith to bring you a series of intimate acoustic in-store sets at certain UK branches including Nottingham, Leeds, Birmingham, London and Amsterdam to coincide the tour (dates as below, times tbc). Speaking about the Paul Smith acoustic sets ahead, Ian says:

“We started breaking our songs down to do some acoustic shows late last year and that was a real challenge, but they went down really well, surprising many people! So that element of the tour playing the Paul Smith shows should be great too to give people a flavour of our slightly more chilled (but still fun and energetic!) side.”

KATALINA KICKS WILL PLAY THE FOLLOWING DATES IN 2017….

5th May – Scruffy Murphys, Birmingham
( + Paul Smith In Store earlier in the day at Birmingham branch)

EP & GIG NEWS: Chloe Foy announces ‘Are We There Yet’ EP, launch at Eagle Inn Salford 13th May

0

Flaws is the first track to be taken from Chloe’s forthcoming EP ‘Are We There Yet?’ which will be released on Friday 12th May. Showcasing her talent for skewed, ambitious songwriting, The Line Of Best Fit described the song as “stunning” in their premiere this week.

She will launch the EP on Saturday 13th May at the Eagle Inn in Salford, a Hey Manchester! promotion: https://www.facebook.com/events/1833973909962011/

Chloe Foy has previously been likened to such artists as Laura Marling and Sharon Van Etten. Her songs are imbued with lyrical and textural inflections evocative of much of the music she loves – taking inspiration as much from neo-classical music as much as wider trends within indie-rock, Chloe’s new EP comprises carefully constructed arrangements that delicately compliment her cryptic lyrics.

‘definitely a name to watch’ – Folk Radio UK

‘Stunningly beautiful’ – The Mancunion

‘…enchanting vocals and mature songwriting from this wonderful, rising talent’ – Thank Folk For That
