ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: DJ Format & Abdominal return with ‘Still Hungry’, announce tour for May 2017

0

For fourteen years, DJ Format and rapper Abdominal have been entertaining crowds from Toronto to the UK. Now the hip-hop stars are back at it in 2017 with their new album ‘Still Hungry’. The new album comes off the heels of a wildly successful November 2015 UK tour that commemorated ten years since their last time performing together in the UK.

DJ Format & Abdominal wanted to ride this momentum to create their first full-length album together. While they both have collaborated on each other’s solo records, ‘Still Hungry’ marks their first joint album. Still Hungry boasts the best of what Format and Abs bring to the hip-hop community: funky, up-tempo and slick beats, coupled with intelligent, savvy lyrics. The album also showcases a grittier, harder sound, reflecting the maturity of the two artists, giving their audience some head-bobbing bangers that could rock any concert hall.

DJ Format, aka Matt Ford, won over hip-hop heads in 2003 with his slow-burning hit album ‘Music for the Mature B-Boy’, featuring the standout track ‘We Know Something You Don’t Know’ starring the vocals of Chali 2na and Akil of Jurassic 5. Abdominal, aka Andy Bernstein, has been involved in Toronto’s music scene for nearly 25 years, performing at the Harbourfront Center for the Arts, Manifesto Festival, the SOCAN Awards, Pop Montreal Showcase, the Cavalcade of Lights and many other high profile events.

TOUR NEWS: Declan McKenna May 2017 dates

0

The young Brit will headline ten dates in May, kicking off at Thekla in Bristol on the 15th May, and concluding at Concorde 2 in Brighton on the 30th May. This new run of dates is in addition to the previously announced UK shows in March, and will be preceded by Declan’s first appearances at Coachella in California this April.

Tickets for the May tour go on general sale from Friday 24th February via www.DeclanMckenna.net

Following twelve months of persistent touring across the UK, US, and Europe, Declan and his band’s live shows have soon become spectacles in themselves. As an artist who interacts regularly with his fanbase on social media, the energy and elation in the ever increasing sized rooms when the artist and fans are all brought together, makes for an incredible atmosphere and experience.

in a very short period of time, the recently turned 18 year old has become synonymous with wrapping his fizzing alt-pop songs in smart, engaged lyrical content. It’s been a timely arrival for this young British musician who doesn’t proclaim to have all the answers, but believes it his duty to at least pose a few pertinent questions. Crucially perhaps, none of the activist in Declan comes at the expense of his ear for a melody, and with new single, Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home, Declan has divulged another tantalising taster to his debut album, due for announcement imminently.

Declan McKenna Live:

15th May – Thekla, Bristol
16th May – Junction 2, Cambridge
17th May – Gorilla, Manchester
19th May – Academy 2, Dublin

23rd May – Heaven, London

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Chris T-T double DC ‘Best Of’ released 19 May, tour dates for April/May 2017

0

May 2017 marks Chris T-T’s 20th anniversary making music. The same week in 1997 that Tony Blair came to power, Chris moved to London and before the end of May he’d played his first solo gigs (Chris that is, not Tony) and self-released his debut 7” single.

Shortly after, Chris home recorded and self-released his debut album Beatverse (years before this became commonplace) on a MiniDisc four-track with no computer. Beatverse was barely distributed but won Chris label interest and Radio 1 plays from Steve Lamacq, who championed the song ‘Shit From All Angles’ on the Evening Session. By Christmas, Chris was guesting live on the show.

Over two decades since then, Chris T-T has always walked his own path, with visionary psych pop, startling humour and unflinching, sometimes discomforting radicalism. He’s released 10 solo albums to consistent praise and played over 2,300 shows worldwide. Ten years ago he joined the Xtra Mile Recordings family, signing in 2007 on the suggestion of fast-rising young singer and fan Frank Turner. He has released four albums with Xtra Mile; Capital (2008), Love Is Not Rescue (2010), The Bear (2013) and last year’s 9 Green Songs.

So this May, let’s celebrate Chris T-T’s 20 years of loyal dissent with a first ever career retrospective: the imaginatively titled double CD Best Of. For the first time Chris will also compile his song lyrics into a book, published to coincide. DISC #1 focuses on Chris’s most loved songs from over the years and DISC #2 is a rarities collection of Chris’s favourite studio recordings that haven’t been released on CD before. Full track-listing below.

Chris is also doing a short run of ‘Best Of’ concerts in the UK as well as playing his first appearance at the illustrious Cambridge Folk Festival.

Still busy as ever, in the past year Chris has released grief-stricken ecology record 9 Green Songs (sequel to 2005’s 9 Red Songs), been sole musician (piano accompanist) on the Jim Bob (Carter USM) album Jim Bob Sings Again, completed a set of narrative folk ballads as Creative Fellow at the National Trust Workhouse, Southwell, and played more guest piano on fellow Xtra Mile artist Non Canon’s debut. Meanwhile his weekly late night folk music show Midnight Campfire on Sussex radio station Juice 107.2 has a growing loyal following.

Top 13 Little Known Chris T-T Facts

• ’7 Hearts’ was played on the last ever John Peel show.

• T-T pre-dates the Audi TT but not the Isle Of Man TT Races, which he’s often mistaken for.

• When early T-T song ‘Dreaming Of Injured Popstars’ was played on Radio 1, featuring the lyric “Cliff Richard is nailed to a cross with Lou Reed’s head stuck up his arse,” someone from Mark Borkowski PR (Cliff’s publicists) phoned Chris to find out how successful it might be, to decide if Cliff’s camp would manufacture some outrage for mutual publicity value. They concluded it wasn’t worth it.

• After Chris instigated the iconic civil disobedience hashtag #IAmSpartacus, he turned down requests to appear on almost every current affairs programme on British television. He regretted that almost immediately.

• Chris only wrote his A.A. Milne show because he was jealous that his friend Jim Bob had spent a month on Edinburgh Fringe and he wanted an excuse to go.

• Chris was the first person to tell legendary TV critic Clive James about YouTube, when they appeared on a BBC Radio 3 programme together.

• Chris turned down an early UK support slot with one of his all-time favourite bands The Decemberists to honour a previous gig that was then cancelled. He’s never got over it.

• Last time Chris was played on Radio 1, DJs Phil and Alice accidentally played the unbleeped album version of ‘The Bear’, and had to cut the song as Chris shouted “Don’t fuck with the people!” over and over again. Luckily nobody told the Daily Mail.

• The National once co-headlined with Chris (!!) and some of their party got shitty because his band were given the bigger dressing room. The karma clearly doomed them to obscurity.

• Chris’s first school band in the early 1990s was a trio with future folk star Jon Boden and future Spiritualised percussionist Tom Edwards, making Chris its least successful member.

• Brian May once wrote Chris a (very sweet) apology note, having first written to Frank Turner to praise the song ‘The Huntsman Comes A-Marchin’.

• Chris is partly doing a ‘Best Of’ because Facebook just turned ’T-T’ into a sobbing face emoji – so his social media career is probably wrecked.

• Chris’s beard is 24 years old.

ALBUM NEWS: Blacklips release ‘Satan’s graffiti or God’s art?’ in May

0

The album was produced by Sean Lennon at his studio compound in upstate New York throughout 2016, the album is the group’s most musically evolved to date, while still staying true to their original blistering take on fuzzy, dirty rock n’ roll.

During the recording the band isolated themselves from the outside world, infusing the album with a focused liveliness similar to the spirit that brought them together in the first place. On Satan’s graffiti or God’s art? founding members Cole Alexander and Jared Swilley teamed with former guitarist Jack Hines (who played in the group from 2002-2004) and recent additions Oakley Munson on drums and Zumi Rosow on saxophone. The album also features contributions by Saul Adamczewski of Fat White Family and guest vocals by Yoko Ono.

Black Lips were born of DIY ethic, working their way from sweaty basement shows in Georgia to huge crowds at international music festivals (including a performance at Fun Fun Fun Fest that appears in Terrence Malick’s forthcoming film Song to Song) to tours in such far flung locales as India, Jordan, Cyprus, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraqi Kurdistan, the United Arab Emirates and many more. Satan’s graffiti or God’s art? vindicates Black Lips for sticking it out through many years of shifting trends and buzz bands; providing a sonically captivating document that is as creatively unhinged as it is precisely executed, one of the rawest and most expansive albums in the band’s storied history.

TOUR NEWS: Casual Threats & Massa Confusa tour April 2017

0
Casual Threats

Casual Threats are a DIY post-punk trio (ffo Slaves, At The Drive-In, Interpol) and Massa Confusa are an electronic post-punk band with drum machines. Both bands are touring in support of recent releases.

Massa Confusa

Massa Confusa released their 2nd album Two Man-Machine on the 19th November 2016 and Casual Threats put out their debut Life From Below on the 28th October 2016, but they were both unable to tour much further than their home towns of Newcastle and Stockon. Now they are joining forces to showcase tracks from these releases, and to celebrate MC’s release of ‘Massa Confusa Presents Compilation: Vol 3’, a 36 track comp of bands MC have put on under their Massa Confusa Presents promotion moniker.

The comp will be available digitally on Clarty Cat Records with a limited edition accompanying zine created by MC bassist Matt O’Brien aka Nurse Hayhem. It is the 3rd in a series and features an eclectic mix of North East acts such as Kobadelta, Good Friend, Fret!, Big Fail, Year of Birds and Preqwal; as well as bands from further afield like Nasty Little Lonely (Bristol), Damn Teeth (Glasgow), Jesus And His Judgemental Father (Leeds) and The Infinite Three (London). MC and Casual threats will feature too.

You can listen to last years compilation here: https://clartycat.bandcamp.com/album/massa-confusa-presents-compilation-volume-2

The tour comprises solo and duo sets by MC (dates depending) playing a mix of new and old material. As a duo MC includes bassist Matt O’Brien and MC’s usual industrial backing track. As a solo performance, MC’s Ally Morton reworks MC material with guitar, loops and samples. Casual Threats will provide their usual energetic show representing material from ‘Life From Below’.

The info: Massa Confusa

Massa Confusa started as the solo project of guitarist/vocalist/programmer Ally Morton until 2012 when bassist Matt O’Brien joined to officially make Massa Confusa a collaborative unit.

In July 2013 they performed their first gig and released ‘EP3’ which was the first release to feature Matt on recording; and in December 2013 they released their 4th, ‘Obsessive Computive Disorder,’ at a show with We Are Knuckle Dragger, Cauls and Vasquez.

Aiming to strengthen the community of the North East scene and attract names from outside of the region, they began putting on monthly gigs in Newcastle and Durham under the moniker of ‘Massa Confusa Presents’ in February 2014, and launched their own record label ‘Clarty Cat’ in January 2016, which is also home to Nerd punk trio ‘Skull Puppies’ and ‘Sleepwalk.’ They have also released 2 compilations of bands they put on in 2014 and 2015. You can listen to them on clartycat.bandcamp.com.

Other releases include the album ‘Amblyopic,’ ‘BBC Introducing sessions,’ a cover of ‘Christmas Wrapping’ by the Waitresses for ‘Another Alt Xmas Album,’ ‘Two Imaginary Boys: A tribute to The Cure for Graft-e-oke #3,’ ‘Covers’ EP,’ and ‘Acoustica’ EP.

The latest album, ‘Two Man-Machine,’ was released November 19th 2016.

“Rough but refined, sometimes pitch-black attitude towards post-punk.. with motorik rhythms and occasional jagged synth edges.” God Is In The TV Zine

“Massa Confusa do an awful lot of good within the local DIY scene, booking regular shows and releasing other bands’ music and they have recently curated a compilation featuring bands they’ve put on at their Massa Confusa Presents… gigs. They’re pretty prolific with their own music too, which is a brilliantly abrasive, twisted take on post-punk.” Drowned in Sound

“Tight post-punk vibes and highly intelligent songwriting.” NARC

The info: Casual Threats

Casual Threats have spent the last year and a half honing their aggression laden post-punk sound on the regional live circuit. Support slots with the likes of rising stars Piano Wire, Forever Cult and Yawning Dog have punctuated a relentless run of shows in the resurgent North East music scene with the likes of Mouses, Coquin Migale, Kobadelta and Plaza which has seen the band steadily hone their sound.

Casual Threats have taken time to meld anger, sadness and passion into their grungy wall of noise; a trait that has cemented them as one of the ones to watch in the North East of England. Mixing such unbridled aggression with a focused depth and understanding of melody, Casual Threats released ‘Life From Below’ in October on Laundry Service Records, which offers a poignant outlook on the world in 2016. Drawing influence from both historical feelings of betrayal in the North East and more recent political crises, the three piece consisting of Conor, Ollie and Bazz are trying to take stock of what it is to grow up and live in an area repeatedly decimated by job losses and council cuts; but one which still offers hope and a sense of belonging to its inhabitants .

This release is a testament to the band’s DIY work ethic; being recorded, mixed and mastered in house by Steven Bardgett (Mouses) and co-produced by the band.
“Unashamedly pissed off, Casual Threats are more interested in making you feel sad, than anything else. But their sound brings some emotional relevance to the fore, which for the millennials, who are awash with shit they need to put up with is incredibly hard.” The Pentatonic

“Their pessimistic lyricist make for a sound that is a cross breed between Joy Division and The Buzzcocks.” Gigwise

“Jamming post-hardcores dissonant aggression, post-punks wiry experimentation, and Interpol-esque dour melodies into one track is a tall order, but Casual Threats pull it off with confident aplomb.” – Independent Clauses
