The follow-up to his 2014 debut ‘The Fire Inside’, ‘Time Is A Riddle’ was recorded in Attica Audio studio in Donegal with producer Tommy McLaughlin (Villagers). McLaughlin recruited a small group of local musicians, with Luke and the band slotting together effortlessly to record the album in ten days.

“There were big windows looking over the hills of Donegal, and it was raining the whole time, which was perfect for me,” says Luke. “We were playing and singing at the same time in this lovely big live room, with so much bleed, just the way records used to be made.”

The first single from ‘Time Is A Riddle’ is the spine-tingling ‘Killing Me’, which has already racked up over half a million streams on Spotify. A song Luke wrote for his Grandmother, the track is accompanied by an evocative, home-made, typically personal video.

“It’s cut from digitised cine films that my wife’s late grandfather shot in the Seventies. They were only sent to us recently because her parents were in the process of moving to Vancouver. When I watched them, the nostalgic nature and the parallels with both our grandparents, it just felt tonally right, and a little note of serendipity. So I edited them together and that’s what we’ve got.” Watch here.

Sticking with the family theme, the album’s vivid artwork is a lino print by illustrator and printmaker Hannah Cousins, Luke’s wife. The cover image began as a photograph of a wind-bent tree in Donegal, before Cousins set patiently to work.

“The lino process is one of painstaking craftsmanship, where an image is carved in reverse in a linoleum sheet,” says Luke. “In this case it took Hannah two full days. She then carefully inked the lino and pressed it onto paper, using an Albion press from 1881.”

This sort of care, effort and dedication is core to Luke Sital-Singh’s philosophy. It’s what makes his music breathe and his songs pulse. “I like things that are well made – things that love has been put into. It’s why I like the Slow Movement. It’s why I like vinyl.”

In the same spirit, 28 year-old Sital-Singh is finessing a series of special filmed performances in the studios, workshops, foundries and ateliers of a host of Slow Movement crafts people he’s connected with up and down the country. Watch this (bespoke) space for collaborations with a ceramicist in Glasgow, a knife-maker in Derby and a stained glass designer in Devon.

But for now, here’s ‘Time Is A Riddle’. A record where you can smell the graft, see the joins and hear the sweat on the frets – and the occasional live-recording misstep. It’s that real.

RECORD LABEL NEWS: First Clue Club digital release out 24th March – AA-Side with Fighting Caravans’ ‘It’s A Nice Ride (To Be Fair)’ & Colour Of Spring’s ‘Frail’

0

The first Clue Club digital release is unleashed in March 2017, as a split AA-Side.
Fighting Caravans’ ‘It’s A Nice Ride (To Be Fair)’ sweeps through melodic, yet fierce territory with nods towards Nick Cave, The Walker Brothers and The Last Shadow Puppets. Frontman Dan Clark spits his typical fierce lyrical landscape, acid pouring over the lush sounds created by the rest of the band.

Colour Of Spring’s offering ‘Frail’ provides the perfect accompaniment with their stirring, shoegaze wall of sound being decorated gently by frontman Shane’s fragile vocals. It’s everything you could want from a shoegaze anthem, with the added possibility of a broken heart being a distinct reality.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Mt. Wolf announce new single ‘Heavenbound’, live dates in June 2017

0

Mt. Wolf have experienced much since their early days as a band – line-up changes, enviable hype and interest and, most of all, a sense of expectation that has never left them. With upcoming debut album ‘Aetherlight’ (pre-order) set to not only meet but exceed those tall expectations, they have released the second track from the record, and the first single proper ‘Heavenbound’. Owing a melodic debt to Echo & The Bunnymen and The National while retaining the sky-scraping atmospherics that have become the band’s trademark, the record captures them at perhaps their most anthemic yet.

Patience has been the key, as the band worked tirelessly behind the scenes towards the all-encompassing sound for their new material that they had always aimed for. After a productive 12 months with super-producer Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, M83, Daughter) they have returned with a debut album that confirms that sound is now very much realised.

The band will play the following shows to launch the album:

8th June – Hoxton Hall, London
9th June – The Eagle Inn, Manchester
10th June – The Lantern, Bristol

TOUR NEWS: Rebecca Pronsky April 2017 tour

0

Rebecca Pronsky is a born and raised Brooklynite whose music confidently straddles the boundaries of country roots, jazz, rockabilly, and folk. She creates a distinctive sound, which at times feels like The Smiths relocated to Nashville or Stevie Nicks singing with Ennio Morricone.

After extensive touring behind her previous album release ‘Only Daughter’, which made The Telegraph’s Top 10 Country Albums of 2013, Rebecca Pronsky and long-time producer & guitarist Rich Bennett took time off from the road to open a recording studio in their hometown of Brooklyn, NY.

Rebecca Pronsky’s latest album Known ‘Objects’, released to wide acclaim in 2016, was originally conceived as a duo album, but once the recording studio was up and running, the environment proved too tempting to stop at just voice and guitars. Surrounded by an ever-growing flock of talented special guests, and no strict schedule or deadlines, they were able to take their time, Pronsky’s songwriting and vocal agility shining as never before while Bennett’s production and arranging skills flourish.

New non-album single ‘Where Are You Now?’ out now

Rebecca says:

“I wrote “Where Are You Now?” on November 9, 2016, the day after the US Presidential election. I spent the night prior at a gathering of women ready for a historic moment… and that moment never came. Instead the wind was knocked out of us by what felt like the surprise death of a close friend. Smiles turned to tears, disbelief, humiliation. Months later, a profound sense of loss continues to follow me around.

“The single’s cover art is a photograph of a piece by artist and friend Spencer Merolla who attended the election night gathering with me. The piece is called ‘A Loss’. Spencer crafted it from the clothes she wore to the victory party on November 8: a white pantsuit honoring the Suffragettes. It seems perfectly fitted to go alongside the song, as we were both working through our grief.”

TOUR & ALBUM NEWS: Happyness album released 7th April, tour in April 2017

0

When Happyness first burst into the public conscience with debut single ‘It’s On You’, their spirited take on US college rock was as big a surprise as it was an instant hit. The resulting full length, ‘Weird Little Birthday’, went on to feature in many End of Year album lists. Worldwide tours, an NME Award, a re-issue on the much-loved labels Moshi Moshi Recordings (Bar/None in US), and millions of Spotify plays later, it is now just a few short weeks until their long-awaited follow-up ‘Write In’ is released. Anyone pre-ordering the album will receive new track “Bigger Glass Less Full” as a free download. Pre-order the album HERE

Part-recorded at the band’s own Jelly Boy Studios, then finished with Adam Lasus in LA, Happyness shared some thoughts on ‘Bigger Glass Less Full’:

‘Bigger Glass’ started with an oblique strategy that we learnt from Terry Gilliam: apparently he made “Brazil” without ever reading 1984. We were trying to sound like a Pierre Cavalli song we’d heard once a very long time ago. It couldn’t sound less similar if we’d tried… We added the acoustics when we were in LA mixing with Adam Lasus – as of now the only thing we’ve ever recorded outside the UK.”

Once the band return from this year’s SXSW, they’ll head straight out on a headline UK tour, followed by European dates in May. Benji comments; “This tour is our first headline tour for a while now, and for the first time we’ll have two albums to play from, so we’re looking forward to it a lot. We’ve got a lot of expensive ideas for stage props that we probably won’t be able to realise by April.”

TOUR NEWS: The Sundowners/Edgar Jones & The Joneses co-headline April/May 2017 tour

0

In raring anticipation of their two bountiful new releases on cult Liverpool label Skeleton Key Records – emphatic indie force The Sundowners and the veritable Godfather of Scouse-Psych Edgar Jones & The Joneses have come together for a joint headline tour of mind bending proportions.

As if the combination of two behemoths of celebrated psychedelia wasn’t potent enough, Birmingham upstarts Cut Glass Kings have been anointed as tour support for the nine date tour commencing at Brudenell Leeds on April 25th and ending at King Tuts Wah Wah Hut on May 7th.

The Sundowners

A breeze of true, artistic freedom blows through the bold and brilliant second album from The Sundowners, as the Liverpool five-piece release Cut The Master, the keenly anticipated follow up to their lauded debut, appearing on Skeleton Key Records on 21st April.

An assembly of rare, unconventional musical minds gathered for the band’s recording sessions at Parr Street Studios, Liverpool, placing a multitude of hands on the production tiller, resulting in a fascinatingly, multi-directional record. Collaborators led by the band included James Skelly and Rich Turvey (The Coral, She Drew The Gun, Blossoms) and part-musical archaeologist, part-sonic alchemist, Andy Votel, with the latter not only co-producing two tracks, but curating/penning a series of curious, cinematic interludes that weave between each track.

A regular mainstay of the Liverpool scene, for over 20 years, Edgar returns (from illness) in 2017 with a fresh new record. ‘The Song of Day and Night’ is released on Skeleton Key Records on Friday 14th April 2017. Already being lauded by those lucky enough to hear it as his best work since 2005’s seminal ‘Soothing Music for Stray Cats’, touted by Noel Gallagher as his favourite album that year – “It bent my head man”, he stated in an Observer interview.

Drawing influence from his big love of 60’s stateside soul music labels both North and South. Edgar was first introduced to the Liverpool scene as Ian McCulloch’s (Echo and the Bunnymen) bassist aged only 18, leaving to form his own group the much loved scouse psychedelic group the Stairs whose debut LP ‘Mexican R’n’B’ is now a rare and collectable item.

From there on, a bona-fide bass guitarist, Edgar’s skills have been called upon by many including Paul Weller, Johnny Marr, Cherry Ghost and Love. Alongside this he has led his own groups, highlighting his love of rhythm and blues and soul music, which have always been a delight to witness.

The release of the record will see him embark on a national tour with his 4-piece band presented by Skeleton Key and also featuring label mates The Sundowners and Brummie trio Cut Glass Kids.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Tom Chaplin releases ‘Solid Gold’ ft. JONES March 17th & May 2017 dates

0

It’s been a busy start to the year for Tom Chaplin, just back from an intimate American club tour with his amazing band. Luckily he’s found time to return to the studio and record a new version of ‘Solid Gold’ ft. Jones, one of the stand out tracks on his acclaimed debut album
‘The Wave’.

“When I wrote the middle section of the song, I always had it in mind that it should feel like a duet,” says Tom. “After discovering JONES through a friend, I decided to make it a full duet. Having never done this kind of thing before, I was slightly dubious as to how it would work.
However once we got into the studio, it just added a whole new layer to the song.”

Tom describes ‘Solid Gold’ as a love letter to his wife. “I wanted to articulate how my view of our relationship had changed once I got myself clean. It’s one of the most poignant moments on the record.”

Anyone who heard Tom and JONES perform the track live on a recent Dermot O’Leary Radio 2 session or the Sun Bizarre Facebook Session , had a sneak preview of the spellbinding reworked version of the song.

Having toured the UK last autumn, Tom embarks on a 15 date British tour in May including London’s Palladium on the 17th. His 24 carat band – Sebastian Sternberg, Rosie Langley, Tobie Tripp and Beau Holland – effortlessly swap instruments to recreate the lush, emotional sound of ‘The Wave’ driven by Tom’s captivating voice.
