SINGLE & ALBUM NEWS: Weirds announce new single ‘Phantom’ & debut album release – ‘Swarmculture’ – on 12th May

0

Leeds Psych Grunge four-piece Weirds have released their new single ‘Phantom’. The track establishes Weirds trademark sound as one that features mesmerising guitar melodies, juxtaposed by full throttled, distorted soundscapes whilst staying true to pop hooks and structure.

“Phantom is the probably the poppiest thing we’ve written, but still has a sense of heaviness and ugliness to it. We wanted to write something with deserty, sinewy riffs but something you could also dance to. It flicks between bombastic guitar sounds and psychedelic synths, and the lyrics cut through all the sickly-sweet sludge like razorblades.” Aidan Razzall, vocals.

As well as Soundcloud the single is available on Spotify and iTunes.

The single is taken from the band’s debut album, ‘Swarmculture’, due 12th May on Alcopop! Records.

Recorded with Matt Peel (Pulled Apart By Horses, Eagulls) at The Nave , an atmospheric Leeds studio built into a converted church, the band set out to create a dark, heavy, psychedelic record which still had the pop structure and hooks to make people dance.

Following on from 2016’s ‘Weird Sun’ EP , the band intentionally wanted to create light at the end of the sonic tunnel with ‘Swarmculture’ to provide a sense of relief from the lyrically brutal narrative. The studio location was significant in coining the album title, derived after bassist Matthew Vaughan had observed a flock of starlings in the courtyard, triggering a trail of thought on colonial behaviour and how is transcends to multiple species – including humankind.

“It was a very conscious decision to combine the two words to create ‘Swarmculture’. It just seemed to encapsulate the world we wanted to create with this record. With the fact that Western culture is swarming towards a populist right, with people blaming others for parts of their lives that they’re not happy with, calling for change before they even begin to think about whether the change will be good or not, we felt ‘Swarmculture’ reflected the world we live in. Everything swarms, whether it be a colony of ants or the corporate conglomerates. We definitely, and will continue to, try to keep music and politics separate but as any type
of artist, you are definitely inspired and influenced by what is going on around you” – Aidan Razzall

Weirds recently revealed ‘Valley Of Vision’, the first single from SWARMCULTURE , in the form of a spectacularly cinematic music video.

0

Fabled Birmingham dream-rock trio JAWS are set to unfurl an unadulterated anthem of defiance ahead of a string of UK festival appearances and their newly announced 2017 headline tour – a whistle stop jaunt of the UK which sees the band top the totem at dates in Manchester, London and Oxford.

‘Cast’ (released March 20th) is the endmost track to be taken from the band’s widely-lauded 2017 album ‘Simplicity’ – a release laden with melodic hooks and daydream sensibilities – lionised as their most accomplished and realised offering to date.

A sonic manifestation of temerity – ‘Cast’ – evokes a sense of self-determination and of overcoming inner turmoil. An official video comprised of live footage from the Simplicity Tour is slated to follow the tracks release.

Making the most of an abundant harvest JAWS will also offer up ‘Fruit’ as the B-Side to ‘Cast’. Released April 10th ‘Fruit’ is an up-beat off-cut that was omitted from the ‘Simplicity’ song cycle.

B-Town’s A-Team will be leading the charge at headline dates in Manchester (25th), London (26th) and Oxford (April 27th), as well as succession of UK Festival slots that includes Y Not Festival, Hit The North and Live At Leeds. Nottingham’s ubiquitous indie trio Kagoule are set to pull their weight as main tour support for JAWS headline shows.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: The Undercover Hippy releases ‘Truth & Fiction, May 2017 tour

0

Mounting a new campaign with his first studio release since 2014’s ‘Monkey Suit’ plus a slew of live dates across the UK, the subversive DJ turned singer-songwriter makes his long overdue return this Summer – and not a moment too soon.

Largely inspired-by and rallying-against much that has come to grip politics and society over the last 12 months, ‘Truth & Fiction’ is the forthcoming new record from the artist AKA Billy Rowan and will land on 20th May 2017.

Covering topics from the serious to the ludicrous, The Undercover Hippy’s latest effort sees him offer his unique take on: fake news, internet privacy and the U.S. election, nappy wearing barristers and best friends trying to snog your mum… With 10 new tracks recorded and ready to conquer all, the album is a much needed dose of passionate storytelling and thought provoking protest pieces that make for a must listen from one man on a mission.

Those familiar with Billy’s music, will already know he is definitely not your average singer songwriter. After 7 years spent DJ’ing and MC’ing on the Drum & Bass circuit, Billy switched up identities, swapping the decks for a guitar as he began a new life with a new moniker in 2007: the Undercover Hippy was born. Touring relentlessly ever since, The Undercover Hippy brings together soulful vocals, infectious reggae rhythms, and the lyrical delivery of a skilled mc, with a charismatic style and playful sound that has had audiences rapt from day one.

But making a decision to step back from the live stage, The Undercover Hippy began to focus on recording a new album in November 2016.

Speaking about the writing and recording of the new album and what to expect, Billy says:

“For a while I was a bit worried that the last album Monkey Suit might have been the best I had to offer, especially when 3 weeks before going into the studio we still only had 5 songs written for a 10 track album! But actually, the songs that have been written and developed during and after the recording process are probably my favourite tracks on the album. It’s also meant that those songs are still really topical, as I’ve literally been writing lyrics and recording vocals right up to the final week of mixing. So yeah, I’m really happy with how it’s turned out, so you can expect big things!”

With ‘Truth & Fiction’ ready to drop this May, The Undercover Hippy will also be hitting the road for a series of shows around the release. Backed by his full band, mixing guitars, keys, drums, bass, horns and backing vocals, Billy will once again be bringing UK audiences their renowned high energy, interactive and highly entertaining live show. SINGLE NEWS: Shaking Chains debut single ‘Midnight Oil/Drunk No More’ on vinyl out 24th March 2017

0

Shaking Chains borrowed their name from The Masque of Anarchy, a poem written when Shelley was in exile, to portray his disgust with the Peterloo Massacre and the encroaching parochialism of the England in which he fled.

More Chartists than chart hits, they are a four piece produced in the north long after production halted, currently treading water under the dark streets of London (having played music together, in one form or another since they were at school).

In an age where groups live and die in the time it takes them to amass student loan debt, they have stayed together, like a dysfunctional family – chained – through mutual misunderstanding, begrudging love and harrowing shared experience.

They’ve seen the changing musical landscape gorge on itself and spew out pale imitations, enough times, to inoculate themselves from hype and ceremony. Instead, they’ve concentrated on their neurotic craft and sullen art.

This AA single is the bands first release.

Shaking Chains are:

Jack Mahoney – Lead Vocals/Guitar
Nathan Mcilroy – Bass/Vocals
Alex Solo – Guitar/Vocals
Jack Hardiker – Drums/Vocals

The single is being released digitally and physically, on 500 hand numbered 7” vinyl (100% analogue).

FESTIVAL NEWS: Tramlines Festival adds even more names to its 2017 lineup

0

Tramlines – Sheffield’s inner-city music festival – has added even more talent to the genre-busting lineup for its 2017 event. The festival will take place from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd July and will now feature iconic indie band Primal Scream and grime legend Kano. All girl four-piece The Big Moon are also amongst the new additions as is remixer extraordinaire The Reflex. Continuing its support of emerging talent, Tramlines will now feature a bill of recipients of PRS’ Momentum Music Fund including Champion, Mista Silva, Flamingods and Jerry Williams. Remaining one of the best value festival tickets around from £42 (plus booking fee) for a weekend ticket, festival-goers are in for a real treat this year.

Since its inception in 2009, Tramlines Festival has carved a name for itself as one of the most genre-busting music festivals around. Previous acts to have graced the Tramlines stages include Public Enemy, Basement Jaxx, The Charlatans, Sister Sledge, The Cribs, Katy B, George Clinton Parliament Funkadelic, alt-J, the xx, Dizzee Rascal, Martha Reeves Roots Manuva, Slaves, Sugarhill Gang, Buzzcocks and The Selecter. As a former winner of Best Metropolitan Festival at the UK Festival Awards and having been shortlisted for an NME Best Small Festival award, Tramlines continues to set itself apart with its inner-city location, cutting-edge music offering and unbeatable ticket price.

The 2017 three-day festival has already announced likes of The Libertines, legendary ska band Toots and the Maytals, R&B girl-group All Saints, The Coral, Twin Atlantic, Metronomy, The Pharcyde, We Are Scientists, Loyle Carner, Nadia Rose and many more for its new-look festival site exclusively spanning three outdoor stages. Tramlines is always a highlight in the UK festival calendar and this year is set to be no different.

With a career that has spanned 20 years and eighteen hit singles, Primal Scream will head up Saturday’s Main Stage bill. Formed in 1984 and the winners of the first ever Mercury Music Prize for 1991’s ‘Screamadelica’, Primal Scream have influenced a generation of fans and set the tone for a musical style that would define the following decade and pave the way for bands like The Stone Roses and The Happy Mondays.

Meanwhile, grime legend and Mercury nominee Kano will head up Friday’s bill at the newly revamped Devonshire Green stage. Kano’s most recent album ‘Made InThe Manor’ earned widespread critical acclaim for its intimate portrayal of inner-city England today.

The Big Moon

Tramlines is thrilled to welcome The Big Moon to the festival bill. Hot off of the heels of their debut album ‘Love In The 4th Dimension’ produced by Catherine Marks (Wolf Alice, Foals), a sell-out show at The Scala and a Hottest Record accolade for ‘Formidable’ from Annie Mac, these gregarious ladies are soaring to great heights.

For fans of imaginative remixes, boxfresh sonics and intricate arrangements, new addition The Reflex is not to be missed. The French native breathes new life into soul, pop and disco classics to great effect and boasts a remarkable list of fans that include Nile Rodger, Kid Creole Disclosure and Jazzy Jeff – now that’s impressive.

Alongside the big names on its bill, Tramlines has long held a reputation for championing the best emerging talent, and this year is set to be no different. A host of Sheffield and South Yorkshire artists join the bill, with the likes of Liberty Ship, The SSS, Luxury Death, Logs and rapper Matic Mouth all tipped by the Tramlines team as ones to watch.

The festival has also teamed up with PRS For Music to present a bill of some of the recipients of PRS’ Momentum Music Fund. The Momentum Music Fund offers grants for artists/bands to break through to the next level of their careers, and supports all areas of becoming an established musician, including recording, touring and marketing. A selection of Momentum-funded artists will appear on a brand-new stage in the Devonshire Green arena.

Earlybird tickets and first and second release for Tramlines Festival 2017 sold out in record time. Third release weekend tickets are now on sale for just £42 plus booking fee. Tickets can be purchased from www.tramlines.org.uk

SINGLE REVIEW: Thomas & The Empty Orchestra – ‘Patron Saint’

0

I’ve been sitting on this track for over a month now, and I’ve been itching to tell you all about it. Now it’s released I can finally do it at last.

I reviewed the previous release ‘A More Equal Punishment’ and you can read more about Thomas & The Empty Orchestra in my Artist Feature.

So now to the new release ‘Patron Saint’. There is a distinct 70s’ West Coast singer/song-writer feel to this track. It is – at least for the start of the track – raw and stripped back to Thomas’ voice and an acoustic. You can hear every rattle of the guitar. And then there’s a burst, a few notes of piano coming in, and then of all things, just to emphasise that West Coast folk feel there’s a harmonica. It builds again to layered voices and strings and then there is this most wonderful guitar to fade. Musically it conveys what the song’s about perfectly.

And what is is this song about? Well, Thomas says “the track explores topics of platonic love, sexual tension, drunken epiphanies and thoughts of ‘what might have been’”. Thomas’s vocals on this song are just perfect, he almost wails at some points. His voice drags you into a very personal experience but one, I’d like to think most of us will understand. The words? They’re from the heart.

The production, by Thomas’s long-time collaborator Nathan Bailey, is faultless. The gradual building of layers in the arrangement is so seamless, there’s no jarring as new layers and sounds are introduced.

This is a song to really listen to, it isn’t something that is something you put on as background. For me, I found two ways of getting the most from the track – and how you listen to music is really really important – on headphones, and really loud on a great system. It works either way.

This is a beautiful, emotionally charged track. One that puts you through the wringer, and leaves you wanting more.

‘Patron Saint’ is available on all digital platforms.

We here at LSF need no persuading that The Orielles have that something special that’s going to see them become huge. So let’s just say that this single is huge. It throws all sorts of influences into The Orielles’ mixing pot and comes out sounding wonderful. yep there’s a psych edge but there’s Happy Mondays, hints of Dee-Lite, A Certain Ratio in there.  And, make no mistake, it’s 8 1/2 minutes of total wigged out joy!

The band are touring in April and having caught them some time ago, I can recommend the live experience highly. Grab those tickets fast, they’re going to be flying out once people hear the new single.
