This is the first review of any release by Space Dolphin (Hey, cool name guys) I’ve ever done. Clearly I’ve been missing out, what they do is cool, way way cool. And hey, just for info, these tracks are instrumentals, not that you miss any vocals.
‘Smoking Kills, Quit Now’ is a slow grooving, kinda jazzy thing. While there’s something of a retro organic feel, it’s sprinkled with things that add an up to date twist. At the start it majors on keys – there’s piano, there’s something that has a funky vibey sound to it. There’s spacey sounds that add something that has me in mind of the jazzier output of Gong (Not that I think they’d think me for that), that’s a personal thing, you can choose to ignore that. But then there’s strangely off-kilter guitar that strangely has me thinking ‘Fripptronics’ (the press release says Tom Waits, I get that but it’s that guitar sound that gives me that Fripptronic thing). What it reminds anyone of is largely unimportant, the fact that it’s cool and brilliantly played is the take-away here.
‘Wet Paint’ is a quirkier track, yep it has those cool grooves but it has all these strange sounds. And it has the best guitar I’ve heard in a long time, so cooool. But the thing about this is that in some ways it kinda mirrors a classic jazz improvisation – the players wig out for a while and return to the main groove time and time again. And boy, does it take off in all directions, at one point it goes all wooshy (that’s the only way I can describe it).
‘Wet Paint’ could be described as ‘Smoking Kills, Quit Now’ part two, they sort of work together as one piece, if you were that way inclined.
It’s at this point I have to admit to something – nope not that I’m a huge fan of folk music and indie, contrary to what I’ve been telling you all this time – I am a huge jazz fan. And that’s what’s hooked me into these two tracks. It’s not straight jazz by any means but it has that feel, that jazz groove. The fact that none of the band are shy in showing that they can really play. The fact that they play around with the music – it does unexpected things that just leave you breathless. And I love that they’ve taken elements of other music – hiphop, progressive music – to make something that is so much their own. I miss music like this.
This release is one of the fav releases I’ve reviewed this year. It’s a sonic journey, a wild trip, join me on the trip, people.

A line-up of four acts – one I love CPSD, and three I didn’t know what to expect, another great line-up from 360 Club. Bands I don’t know is what excites me – will I like them, will they be my sort of thing?
Red Shakes
So while I didn’t know what to expect from Red Shakes, I did find out that Red Shakes are not entirely new to me. Red Shakes is the new project from Sam ex of Railroads, a band I saw play at 360 Club some time ago. So just to clarify Red Shakes isn’t a band as such, from what I can work out it’s Sam plus some people who play live with him.
The first song is indie with something of a garage-y edge. I kind of expected something of a garage-y edge but I didn’t expect the indie thing. I had a short chat with Sam later that night and he said that he was getting his ‘pop thing out’ (or words to that effect). Tunes featured heavily in the set, so I get what he means.
Red ShakesRed ShakesRed ShakesRed ShakesRed ShakesRed ShakesRed ShakesRed ShakesRed Shakes
While I’m not a huge fan of indie, I am a fan of songs with tunes, great tunes, and sung with a passion. Sam gave us that. Indeed all I could do was stand and admire the energy Sam put into winning the crowd over.
The set includes two covers – ‘Valerie’ and a Strokes song. For me, I rather liked the cover of ‘Valerie’, but chatting to some people in the crowd they preferred the Strokes cover. But hey. It’s diffrent strokes for different folks!
The two highlights for me were the two slower songs in the set. This included the final song which Sam performed solo.
Red Shakes is something to keep an eye on. Sam writes great songs and the live performance is great.
Neuts
Neuts, contrary to what I had assumed, isn’t a band it’s one man and a guitar. Neuts describes himself as a singer-songwriter (natch) but his songs are gritty, it’s as close to gritty rock as one man with an acoustic can get. And that’s just the first song. I was hooked, I was hooked big time.
And yes some of his songs have that kinda alt-folk thing going on but it’s a feel rather than the whole sound.
The thing I liked about his songs was the edge, his words have an edge and depth. And as his set went on I found that the thing that had me really hooked was his voice. There was something about his voice that was compelling and drew me in – it’s kind of more of a rock voice than a singer-songwriter voice.
NeutsNeutsNeutsNeutsNeutsNeuts
Unfortunately at times during set he had to battle against a rising sound of chatting in the crowd. This was a great pity as his songs deserved respect even if Neuts wasn’t quite your sort of thing, as do all artists and bands of course.
I was hugely impressed by Neuts and I’d really like to see him play again, somewhere where I could really concentrate on his songs. If you get a chance to see Neuts go, go and be drawn in.
The Last Episode
I’d never even heard of The Last Episode before that night. I found myself reaching for the rather easy comparison of Elbow during their first song but that was before it exploded into noisy rock. The Last Episode do that, their songs build to a noisy climax.
I guess you’d call what the band do a sort of alt-rock but there are hints of a ‘Manchester’ thing there, as well as hints of what I’m going to have to call classic rock (although whether the band would thank me for that I have no idea).
The Last EpisodeThe Last EpisodeThe Last EpisodeThe Last EpisodeThe Last EpisodeThe Last EpisodeThe Last Episode
Their songs are big, with big tunes, big earwormy tunes, can’t resist moving to them tunes. Tunes that sound like you’ve heard them before but haven’t, they’re that immediate. I found myself in the rather strange position of having never heard of them but suddenly I’ve loved them for my whole life.
And this is a band who can play, really play, the sound is immaculate and almost effortless. This is a band who are tight, way way tight.
CPSD
And finally to CPSD. It’s been a while since I’ve seen CPSD, the last time I saw them was at Shuffle Shuttle last year. Every time I’ve seen them I’ve been astounded, this was no exception.
CPSD go from nothing to full-on in no time at all. Indeed moments before the band started I’d been chatting to Chris (vocals and guitar). So full on are the band from the get-go I had barely no time to get my camera going to take shots.
So for those of you who don’t know, and why in the hell not this is a band you should have seen, CPSD play a kind of bluesy, sometimes alt-rock, sometimes electronica in feel, sometimes dubby, rock. It has a kind of space to it, although it’s a huge sound, you can hear everything that’s happening. And that’s a good, no a great thing, because this is a band who can really play. The focus is going to be on Chris because he sings and plays guitar that is frankly wondrous, and because he can throw the most brilliant shapes but the bass and drums (and I urge you to focus on those when, not if, you go and see them) are way way cool. And when the band use synths they use them in way I have yet, in all the times I’ve seen them come up with a way of describing, it’s something else. They provide atmosphere, they provide a bass throb.
The mix of those influences and sounds is something that I have no words at all, honestly, to sum up into a pithy easy to understand way of describing it. Perhaps the best thing to say is that it’s just absolutely fucking brilliant music. Music that gets you moving, music that connects with your soul.
And that night CPSD were really on one. They tore into the songs with barely a pause between them. It was one of those nights when a band’s set just seems to whizz by, and you’re left with this overall impression of something you’re going to remember forever. It was with both joy, and a certain disappointment, that the band completed their set with ‘Dubstep Blues’ including a singalong section at the end. I love that song.
Look I’ve said it before, and will no doubt say it again, CPSD are a band you have to see. See them because what they do is incredible, and because they are a fantastic live experience.
While Sheffield based Matilda Shakes may describe themselves as an indie rock band, this isn’t going to give you any idea of what this song actually sounds like. This is heavy people, a heavy slab of raucous rock, raucous somewhat spooky bluesy rock.
So now you know what this is, I hear some of you asking ‘well, is this any good Frank?’ to which I respond ‘good, it’s absolutely fucking brilliant’.
This thing positively overloads on raw raucous guitar. There’s a bloody screaming lead guitar. Drums pound. The vocal is brilliant. And it never, I mean never, lets up from start to finish. This thing rushes along. And it isn’t produced to a polished perfection, it sounds like a live band, and that’s just right for this.
Look I love music like this, it gets you revved up and ready to take on the world. It makes you want to go batshit crazy and throw yourself around the room. Get on this, people, get on this right now.
Waiting For Wednesday have played hundreds of gigs across their native Yorkshire on their journey together; captivating crowds at local festivals Saltaire and Beat-Herder, venues Oporto and Belgrave in Leeds and the Hebden Bridge Trades Club – all the way to the bars of Ireland including the famous Matt Molloy’s. An early On’t Sofa session introduced them to a wider audience on Youtube, and they continue to receive support from BBC Introducing for songs on their self-released records ‘Girls Don’t Play Guitar’, ‘When We Were Seventeen’, ‘Routes’ and next month’s Assembly Point Sessions live EP.
Of the three tracks on the EP, (soul) sisters Anna and Laura explain “it’d been a while since we had recorded anything, and this evening in January at Assembly Point really came together naturally with two friends playing guitar and fiddle alongside us. We decided to do a cover of a song that was inspirational to us (‘Mercy Now’ by Mary Gauthier), an old one that we’d not yet released and the most recent song we’ve written together, and we should have done more really as we’re so pleased with how they sound and look. We’re really happy to support Matt Dunwell’s Assembly Point Studio in Leeds too, as he aims to provide independent musicians with quality professional videos to help them gain opportunities.”
Videos for all three tracks will be released over time, with the video for ‘Mercy Now’ available on YouTube right now.
The unconventional Sunday March 8th release day was chosen to help raise awareness of women’s rights issues and causes around the world on International Womens Day 2020. The duo also has a gig that afternoon at their local Caroline Street Social Club in Saltaire with Six Days, where they hope to recreate some of the sounds from the Assembly Point Sessions with George Quinn and Kieran O’Malley joining them live on the stage,
As a pair, they’ve already shared stages with a range of acclaimed singer songwriters including Billie Marten, JP Cooper and the Lost Brothers, as well as experienced playing support to folk legends like Fotheringay, We Banjo 3 and Mozaik to large new crowds. Now with a rehearsed fuller lineup at the ready, alongside their tested acoustic guitar and vocal harmony partnership, Waiting For Wednesday are looking to introduce themselves to as many fans of soulful country, blues and Americana as possible in 2020.
Zooni is Peter Martin, George Godwin, Matt Glasbey and Ben Clark. A band, a moment, a suggestion, they present a waking dream of art rock. A carousel of keys, synths, strings and percussion swirling around Peter’s central poetic lyrics, they return today with colossal new single ‘Dissolve’.
Released via producer Charlie Andrew’s (Alt-J, Marika Hackman) Square Leg Records, their debut EP was supported by Huw Stephens at BBC Radio One, was selected as John Kennedy’s ‘Big One’ on Radio X (appearing on the Evening Playlist), amassed over 800,000 Spotify streams, and was praised by Q Magazine, Earmilk, Clash Magazine and Gigwise amongst others.
HAGGARD CAT release their ferocious new single ‘Rational’ through Earache Records today, February 14th. Band head off on their first ever UK headline tour through March and April 2020, tickets on sale now.
The incendiary, brand new album ‘Common Sense Holiday’ is set for release on 13th March through Earache Records
HAGGARD CAT have today released a brand new single ‘Rational’, their 3rd single taken from their forthcoming 2nd album ‘Common Sense Holiday’. At first lulling you into a false sense of calm and introspection, the track builds and grows, with sparks of anger firing off with every added riff and snare hit as ‘Rational’ builds to its dramatic conclusion.
From guitarist/vocalist/human whirlwind, Matt Reynolds – “Rational is by far the most exploratory and experimental release from us to date. It features not one, but two hidden key changes and drifts through several time signatures. The lyrics deal with the idea of being sold a lie and although it may seem it, it wasn’t originally intended from a political standpoint, it was in fact a retrospective look at a very short relationship that turned bad near instantly. I hope that someone listening for the words will be able to make up their own mind as to what it personally means to them.”
Live wise, the band will be heading out on their first ever headline tour, which will stretch through most of the end of March and all the way through the start of April – with London show at The Grace on 31st March. The band will release their forthcoming new (2nd) album ‘Common Sense Holiday’, on March 13th through Earache Records.

The band will be releasing their much anticipated 2nd album ‘Common Sense Holiday’ on March 13th through the legendary Earache Records, a follow up to their hugely acclaimed debut album ‘Challenger’ from 2017. They have already released the massive ‘First Words’ single (premiered on the Radio 1 Rock Show in October, watch the video – HERE). The new record chronicles modern life at the turn of the decade from different perspectives. Each track takes on a different aspect of what’s going on in the world around us, from social media, drugs and alcohol to politics. Each track acts as a single chapter of the whole record. As singer/guitarist Matt Reynolds explains “We love the idea of revealing the album slowly, track by track; so a listener will get a really fragmented idea of what’s going on at first, which finally opens up into the big picture, it feels like a good metaphor for what the album is trying to say as a whole.”
Live wise, these dates follow a steady build of DIY headline touring, a packed live support schedule including with the likes of Jamie Lenman, Enter Shikari, Dead Kennedys, Black Peaks, Black Peaks, DZ Deathrays, Employed to Serve and Palm Reader, as well as a rapturous performance at last years Glastonbury Festival.

Bethlehem Casuals will also take in a hometown show at Manchester’s Bread Shed on the 17th April 2020 – the night of the release of their new album. With their upcoming concept record set in Manchester and its narrative something of a love letter to the city’s proud musical heritage, the Casuals will be pulling out all the stops to ensure this will be a launch to remember.
Speaking about what to expect from the upcoming tour, George from Bethlehem Casuals says:
“Having sharpened our live show at festivals across Europe and live on BBC Radio 6, BETHLEHEM CASUALS are back and this time we’ve got a story to tell. With the release of our new second album ’The Tragedy of Street Dog’ just around the corner, the Casuals will be bringing a cocktail of tribal rhythms, psychedelic vocals and raucous noise to your doorstep. You’d be a fool to miss it.”
Released on 17th April 2020, ‘The Tragedy of Street Dog’ tells the story of a house-pet-gone-rogue. Set in the band’s own hometown, the story follows a canine protagonist ‘Street Dog’ as he embarks on a quest to rediscover the music of Manchester. Along his perilous journey, Street Dog visits some of the city’s infamous haunts like Temple Bar, The Oxford Road and The Hacienda, and encounters treacherous foes like ‘River Rat’ and ‘The Oki’.
Erudite and experimental, ‘The Tragedy Of Street Dog’ sees Bethlehem Casuals’ sleazy, sultry and saxy brand of oddball pop truly come into its own. Mind-bending and musically adept in equal measure, it’s one heck of a ride and a record that casts a fresh and fantastical light on whether a dog’s life is all that bad after all…
‘The Tragedy of Street Dog’ was recorded at Giant Wafer Studios, Llanbadarn Fynydd in May 2019. All tracks on the album were engineered by Saam Jafarzadeh and Ashwin Menon, with mastering by Peter Fletcher.
Throwing us a bone as to what to expect, you can tune into head-spinning lead single: “Flaccid Passion”, here and now.
The info
Bethlehem Casuals are a jazz/psych/rock septet based in Manchester. With an eclectic sound that infuses a world of influences, heady grooves and tribal drum circles, the Casuals’ have been dubbed by some as “urban rock styled DIY world music”; but it’s of course open to interpretation.
Gaining momentum with every one of their wonderfully weird releases, the Casuals recently caught the ear of BBC 6Music tastemaker Marc Riley who invited them in for a riotous live session and praised them as: “All over the place in the best kind of way.” With word getting out fast, this summer the group embarked on a Summer that was perhaps a little less relaxed than their namesake would usually allow. Invited to a slew of major festivals, the band hit up the stages of Bluedot to Kendal Calling, Moovin’ to Manchester Jazz, and were even invited to make their Glastonbury debut. They even found the time to host their own biannual shindig! ’Keep It Casual Fest’ to a sell-out capacity. In Autumn 2019, the Casuals put their festival-tested live chops to the test and left jaws hanging at a series of packed-out headline shows on their ‘Flaccid Passion’ Tour.
After a string of acclaimed singles and studio releases, the band will now release their upcoming album ‘The Tragedy of Street Dog’ in 2020. There are also plans to release an illustrated children’s book to accompany the release.
