As well as the piano playing of Antony Brannick, which included some lovely Chopin mazurkas, this concert featured the Square Chapel Brass. This expressive, assertive ensemble comprises Lawrence Killian and Julian Whitehead on trumpet, Judith Stones on horn, and Andrew Griffiths on tuba.

Their first piece was derived from Oscar Strauss’s “Serenade” a piece originally scored for strings, which came over well in brass. The second half included some more recent pieces, like Anderson’s “Bugler’s Holiday”. Next, Saint-Saens’ elephant, from the “Carnival of the Animals”, featured the tuba. “It’s Not Unusual” by Reed and Mills featured the trombone and Brubeck’s cool “Take 5” the horn. The concert ended with the brisk “Berliner Luft” march.
