GIG NEWS: #360RAW7 – Clare Kelly, The Blacksmith, Liam Sullivan, Molly Rymer – 360 Club Leeds, Friday 29th March 2019

0

After six hugely successful, sold out #360RAW events last year, each of them exhilarating and emotional nights, 2019 heralds the seventh event showcasing the incredible talent emerging from West Yorkshire. RICHARD WATSON, promoter of the 360 Club, and ALAN RAW, presenter of BBC Introducing West Yorkshire and BBC Introducing Humberside, are proud to announce the latest of these special events.

Taking place on FRIDAY 29 MARCH – and subtitled #360RAW7 – the event this time focusses on the emerging talent in the alt-folk, singer-songwriter and blues field, and features a further four of the region’s finest and most exciting emerging artists: CLARE KELLY from Leeds; THE BLACKSMITH from Castleford; LIAM SULLIVAN from Huddersfield; and MOLLY RYDER from Leeds.

Ticket links: https://www.crashrecords.co.uk/360raw7 and https://www.skiddle.com/e/13455789

As with previous #360RAW events, the night will see Alan Raw DJ before and between the live sets, playing new music of all styles from local artists. Anyone can turn up and meet the face behind BBC Introducing and are encouraged to bring demos which he may well play on the night, or pass onto the producers for consideration on his shows. The ethos of #360RAW is purely about supporting emerging acts, a passion that both Richard and Alan share, and one that sees them freely offer musicians their time, their help and their advice without any hidden agenda.

CLARE KELLY

LESS ALONE: https://soundcloud.com/clarekelly/less-alone

“… The audience fell silent, in complete awe of her ability, mesmeric voice and dreamy guitar tones; each song comprising of emotive and deeply personal lyrics …” COUNTERFEIT

CLARE KELLY is a solo alt-folk artist who releases her new single, LESS ALONE, on 29 March 2019. The song is a melancholic tale of returning home to Yorkshire after 18 months travelling abroad and trying to adapt back to the life she had before her adventures. After the success of the debut ELUSIVE YUSEF EP, her new material delves ever deeper and delivers raw and gritty memories of the past. Hailing from Leeds, Clare has received heavy support from BBC Radio Introducing, had her songs featured on Made in Leeds TV, and toured across the UK, the USA and Australia, telling stories of travel and relationships with a dark energy and unique twist. Her new EP will be released later this year.

THE BLACKSMITH

CAN’T BUY A TICKET: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77FCyKE9TD4&feature=youtu.be

Sometimes in life, we just have to start again; this was the notion behind Jack Edwards’ new venture THE BLACKSMITH. After recovering from a total thyroidectomy operation in 2016, he had to completely rehabilitate his voice; learning how to speak and sing again. Jack had been slowly building a following as a bluesy singer-songwriter and put off the thyroid operation because of the obvious risks until the surgeon told him it was his voice or his life. After months of rehabilitation, the voice slowly re-emerged. It’s deeper now and different to what his audience heard before – the belting, raw bluesy numbers are no longer possible – but Jack was determined to go back to the forge and hammer out something new. His first acoustic EP was released last summer, for which Jack will remain eternally grateful.

Following the release of his solo RESTLESS EP in 2016, LIAM SULLIVAN has since been playing with a number of exceptional musicians and has recently finished recording THE NEWS I NEEDED EP, which will be released later this year, seeing the new songs take on a darker and heavier sound. He’s honed his craft and these songs now show off his exceptional lyricism with each one taking a journey through time and space. His live performance is energetic and mesmerising, and renowned for combining raw energy with gut wrenching emotion

MOLLY RYMER

MOLLY RYMER is a singer-songwriter from Leeds, writing and performing her own songs with subtle guitar skill and cleverly-written lyrics. She has performed live on BBC Introducing; played the legendary Leeds Brudenell Social Club; and worked with Mike Heaton from Embrace on the recent single I LEAVE TODAY, taken from her WHERE I AM NOW EP. She also regularly performs at the community focussed Chapel FM Arts Centre in East Leeds and is now making waves on the thriving Leeds music scene.

SINGLE NEWS: BROODERS release ‘RINSE REPEAT’

0

“RINSE REPEAT speaks of times that get lost in a loop of irregularity and uncertainty. It talks of finding a place of false happiness and seclusion whilst being blissfully unaware of the overhanging loneliness that follows a lifestyle of this making. In literal terms, RINSE REPEAT is about the personal experience of finding something that meant so much to me that I was determined to change everything because I had found something to live for. The monotony of life within the cycle of repetition and little motivation was all consuming. RINSE REPEAT is about breaking that cycle completely and finding something new to live for; it is an auditory hammering of frustration, ambition and desperation for something new”

ADAM BAIRSTOW | BROODERS

To coincide with the release, BROODERS are hosting their own one-day festival, RIFFFEST, on Saturday 26 January at the Lending Room, Leeds. The festival will present the best and brightest that the North has to offer, all in one place for one day of sonic devastation and fuzzy excellence, featuring:

SINGLE REVIEW: Oddity Road – ‘Why I Am Like This’

0

This is not the sort of thing I usually like, I’m not usually a big fan of that ‘big indie sound’ thing but it’s a good thing I try to keep an open mind and give things a listen when we get review requests because this I do like, I like it a lot.

So I guess the key thing is say why I gave this more than my usual ‘indie’ scan listen and decided that, yes, I could review it. It’s basically because it has this great edge of rawness, it’s more than slightly raucous. And I like my rock, indie or not, to come with that.

So yes, this has all those indie rock anthem things – soaring tune – check, a beat that doesn’t stop – check, a huge chorus – check. But bubbling under this is this raw guitar, it’s not always obvious but it’s there. And the playing on this track is spot on. The drums pound away, the bass is frankly fabulous. But there’s more, there is a great lyric and the vocals rock people, there’s this lovely high section that’s actually pretty thrilling. And this thing just doesn’t hang about, it roars along at this incredible pace. So yes, it’s indie rock but at times it’s almost rock with an indie edge, and again I like that.

This is something that is going to appeal to indie fans – that’s a given, but also fans of rock – it has enough of that, but also – having experimented – you could throw a shape or two to it out on the dancefloor. And I’m going to admit by the third listen I couldn’t help but singalong, it has that going for it as well.

Do I recommend, yep. If ‘big indie sound’ is not your usual bag, give it go, you may be a convert. If it is, go for it big time.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: BRUTUS announce brand new album ‘Nest’, set for release on March 29th through Hassle Records, UK dates May 2019

0

Epic Belgian 3 piece BRUTUS have announced details of their hugely anticipated forthcoming 2nd album ‘Nest’, set for release on March 29th through Hassle Records in Europe and through Sargent House in the ROTW. The record release is preceded by the first single/video ‘War’ which was shot on the last day of the recordings of ‘Nest’ in Rain City Recorders, Vancouver Canada.

To describe the last two years as a whirlwind for BRUTUS is something of an understatement. Having signed to Hassle Records, 2017 saw the release of their debut album, Burst, which set them on a path of award nominations and ‘album of the year’ accolades, as well as picking up huge fans from Lars Ulrich of Metallica to Simon Neil of Biffy Clyro. In the last 12 or so months, they have toured with Sargent House label mates Chelsea Wolfe and Russian Circles, BRUTUS also hit the road as main support to Thrice through Europe. Taking time out from the live circuit, the trio headed to Vancouver to record their second album, once again returning to Jesse Gander (Japandroids, White Lung, Baptists) at his Rain City Recorders studio in September 2018. The resulting 11 tracks form BRUTUS’s new album, ‘Nest’.

By their own admission, the formative sound of the band was shaped by their physical limitations; drummer Stefanie Mannaerts adopted vocal duties initially out of necessity. Having fully embraced her role as both vocalist and drummer, the full range of Stefanie’s multiple talents is showcased on ‘Nest’. The abrasive urgency of her emotive vocals is mirrored in the tribalistic drumming, just as tender whispers echo the gentle roll of percussion elsewhere. Co-conspirators Stijn Vanhoegaerden (guitar) and Peter Mulders (bass) complete the magic circle with pervasive riffs, dynamic bass lines, and a fine balance between uneasy restraint and unrepentant aggression. BRUTUS throws a net over post-rock, hardcore, metal and pop, gathering defining facets of each into their unique sound.

A diverse mix of influences penetrated the BRUTUS bubble, the biggest of which was the people around them on the journey to the creation of ‘Nest’. Be it the bands they toured with, their family at home, or indeed their own bandmates – human interaction is the nucleus of the album. However, additional sources of creative inspiration peppered their outlook; from Radiohead to Burial, from ‘Twin Peaks’ to Townes Van Zandt.

The path BRUTUS has taken has been meticulously mapped out on ‘Nest’. All those glorious highs and euphoric moments are present – highlighted in magnificent technicolour no less. Burrowed in amongst those triumphs are moments of reflection; the choices they have made in pursuit of their goals and the impact those choices have had on both themselves and those they have left behind in their nest. The arc of the album charts the friction between the band’s forward motion and their desire to maintain a connection to those back at home. It’s a timeline of invincibility and doubt, of taking risks and letting go; a chronology of what they are and what they’ve done.

Bound by a thread that was intangible to others, their shared experiences, both good and bad; ‘Nest’ is the sound of a band who know how to use the strength of their bond to full effect, to use every part of themselves as an additional tool for conveying their message: take care of those in your own nest. BRUTUS find their places of comfort to be very different to the ones previously held dear; the nest they started out with is not quite the same one as they stand in today.

‘Nest’ is released on March 29th and is available to preorder now on limited 12″ vinyl and CD, including EU web-store exclusive LP variant with limited 7″. Preorders available – HERE

TOUR NEWS: She Drew The Gun February 2019 dates

0

Having recently completed a UK tour supporting The Coral, SHE DREW THE GUN will hit the road in February for an extensive headline tour. Many of the dates are already sold-out, with the Glasgow gig being moved to Mono, a bigger venue.

Current single ‘Something For The Pain’. The stylish black & white video was produced and directed by Johnny Gregory and shot in Liverpool.

“The song is about a conversation with a refugee set in the future,” says Louisa Roach, She Drew The Gun’s frontwoman, guitarist and songwriter. “At the point where the refugee crisis has become so big and automation so ubiquitous, that what is left of the first world finally make the decision to become a people rather than profit based society, one that treats everybody as citizens giving them their basic needs. In the video we played with the idea of that future exchange using ‘Jenny Holzer’ style text art to create a narrative and dancers to represent the conversation.

‘Something For The Pain’ is the second single to be taken from the Wirral four-piece’s acclaimed second album ‘Revolution Of Mind’, a BBC 6Music Album Of The Year, which also includes lead single ‘Resister’.

She Drew The Gun were John Kennedy’s Artist In Residence on his X-Posure show on Radio X.

Produced by The Coral’s James Skelly at Liverpool’s Parr Street Studios. ‘Revolution Of Mind’ is the follow-up to She Drew The Gun’s 2016 debut ‘Memories Of Another Future’, which contained the BBC 6Music playlisted singles ‘Poem’, ‘Pit Pony’, ‘Since You Were Not Mine’ and ‘No Hole In My Head.’

TOUR NEWS: Gretchen Peters April 2019 dates

GRETCHEN PETERS returns to the UK for a unique, one off tour in April. Reprising her headlining set at Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, Gretchen will be joined by her regular band, led by long-time musical partner and pianist, Barry Walsh and The Southern Fried String Quartet. Following her two American Music Association Awards for 2015’s Blackbirds, including Best International Album, the 2018 release, Dancing With the Beast, marked another career high. Blending shades of country-rock, indie-folk and Southern gothic with Peters’s smokily honeyed voice, it features all-female characters, from pre-teen to elderly, whose stories vividly illuminate both the personal and political.

The all theatre tour will feature selections from both Blackbirds and Dancing With The Beast performed with strings, as well as a selection of her greatest hits taken from her 12 album career.

Peters has written songs for many artists including Neil Diamond and Shania Twain. She co wrote and performed with Bryan Adams on the hit When You Love Someone.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Another Sky release ‘Apple Tree’, dates February 2019 onwards

0

Another Sky have today unveiled their stunning new single ‘Apple Tree’, showcasing vocalist Catrin Vincent’s astonishing range and the band’s strength for cool atmospherics and poignant lyrics. The track is accompanied by a beautiful stop-motion video, directed by Dann Parry.

Catrin had to say on the video: “Apple Tree is the story of a boy I knew growing up who was bullied for talking to daffodils. I always admired him. The song celebrates feminine men, because I don’t believe being feminine is exclusive to being a woman. We spent some time last year on the Isle of Wight at Chale Abbey Studios. The song was written and recorded there.”

‘Apple Tree’ is both the perfect successor to the band’s previous single ‘Chillers’, and also a huge cinematic step forward. 2018 saw the band make a bold statement with debut EP ‘Forget Yourself’, setting the tone for their politically charged lyrics and social observations. ‘Avalanche’ speaks of toxic masculinity, violence and social marginalisation, whilst ‘Chillers’ tackles the complacency accompanied by wealth.
