ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Paloma Faith releases ‘The Architect’ 17th November, tour March 2018

0

Paloma Faith – one of only two British female artists this decade to have their last three albums go double platinum in the UK – will release her long-awaited fourth album, ‘The Architect’, on 17th November via RCA Records.

The new album – her first in more than three years and since giving birth to her first child – features an array of acclaimed co-writers, producers and collaborators including: Sia, John Legend, Jesse Shatkin, TMS, Starsmith, Tobias Jesso Jr., Eg White, Rag’n’Bone Man, actor Samuel L. Jackson and journalist and activist Owen Jones.

Paloma, who won the BRIT Award for British Female Solo Artist in 2015 following the phenomenal success of her last record, 2014’s ‘A Perfect Contradiction’, explores both personal and political themes on the album.

Whilst the music is classic Paloma – with sweeping orchestral tracks, smooth soul, sleek disco grooves and stomping electro pop all featured on the album – the lyrics raise social and political questions, and cover powerful and topical themes, such as motherhood, social anxiety, wealth inequality, technology’s impact on feelings of alienation…. oh and also the future of the Western world, Donald Trump, Brexit and the refugee crisis – all within the confines of classic pop.

Paloma said: “‘The Architect’ is a social observation record. I was adamant that I wouldn’t write about love. I wanted to look outside of myself. I’m coming at politics from the perspective of the common man or woman, observing why people are suffering. Each song on the record is about a different pocket of the socio-political world that I’ve been delving into.”

She added: “I wanted to write something more modern. On previous albums I’ve been more concerned with the past, but now I’m looking forward because of motherhood and wanting to change things for a better future. It’s a marriage of old and new.”

Paloma has released the video for first single, ‘Crybaby’. The dystopian video, which is directed by Thomas James and was shot in Ukraine, opens with footage of IVF, a newborn baby and a young girl, before a man addresses a group of uniformed young people, including the girl, in a human factory. He gives a speech about qualities such as emotion, empathy and feeling, which he says are “for the weak, for those we leave behind, for those that we remove from the crop.” The rest of video features Paloma as one of the people in the institution as she encounters the brutal training of the people imprisoned.

‘The Architect’ comprises:

1. Evolution ft. Samuel L. Jackson
2. The Architect
3. Guilty
4. Crybaby
5. I’ll Be Gentle ft. John Legend
6. Politics of Hope ft. Owen Jones

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Anti-Flag release ‘American Fall 3rd November, dates October 2017

0

Since unleashing their seminal 1996 debut, ‘Die for the Government’, Anti-Flag has empowered and emboldened their listeners for two generations with a timeless punk spirit. With today’s chaotic political landscape stemming from the controversial 2016 presidential election, the Pittsburgh, PA quartet (Justin Sane [vocals], Chris#2 [bass, vocals], Chris Head [guitar, vocals], and Pat Thetic [drums]) felt the time was right for the band to release their most definitive offering – ‘American Fall’ (out November 3rd, 2017 on Spinefarm Records).

Co-produced by Good Charlotte’s Benji Madden, American Fall fuels politically driven and powerful self-awareness lyrics, while the 11-song collection is structurally fused together in a new sonic direction of punk-rock singalongs and big hooks. Watch their new “Racists” lyric video via VEVO here.

“This song is a call to arms. We must challenge racism and hatred everywhere we see it: at school, at work, at the dinner table with our families…absolutely everywhere. If you still stand by the Trump regime after Charlottesville, you are complicit. The line has been drawn. On one side stand those who fight for humanity, optimism, and empathy. On the other side are those who precipitate bigotry, cynicism, and apathy. Now is the time to get off of the fence and choose which side of history you want to be on.”

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: The Head to release ‘Space’, tour November 2017

0

Brothers Mike Shaw (bass, vocals) and Jack Shaw (drums) and Jacob Morrell (guitars) have been jamming together since high school, writing and performing original songs inspired by the bands they love: trippy Brits like Stone Roses, Spiritualized, Ride, The Verve and Echo and the Bunnymen, and moody Americans like The National, Scott Walker and early R.E.M.

Over the years The Head have opened for/shared the stage with Primal Scream, Lucy Dacus, Those Darlins, Steve Wynn (of the Dream Syndicate), Shovels and Rope, among many others. They’ve also just wrapped up recording sessions at John Vanderslice’s Tiny Telephone Studios in San Francisco, CA

After logging more than 200 nights on the road, The Head returned home to Atlanta to record with producers Tanner Hendon & Wyatt Oates at Madison Studios in a room anchored by an SSL board that previously recorded albums by Matthew Sweet, Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam when it lived at the old Southern Tracks studio.

‘Space’ is out in the UK to coincide with the tour on 10th November 2017

VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: Diet Cig drop video for ‘Maid Of The Mist’ October 2017 dates

0

A few dates into their biggest European tour yet, NYC’s Diet Cig today release the occult-friendly new video for ‘Maid Of The Mist’.

The video’s director, Emily Dubin, goes into more details here:

“My goal with the ‘Maid of the Mist’ video was to take the stereotype of the “emotional girl” and lean into it as hard as possible. Often times, women who exhibit any sort of emotional reaction to anything are labelled over-sensitive and are told to essentially “get over it.” We’re rarely given control, and when we do exercise control, we’re labelled as domineering or a bitch.

The idea that a group of witches set up this whole ritual and do this extravagant spell just so they can make sure to kiss the boy they want during spin the bottle is meant to be a melodramatic reflection of the way men perceive women: always extra, always emotional, always plotting.

However, I think our fondness for and practice of emotional intelligence in a general sense is one of the strongest assets that women can have; what better way to embody power, sensitivity, emotion, and connection to the universe than a bad ass group of witches?

I also need to give an enormous shout out to our Director of Photography, John Komar, who has been an inspiration to me for a while and was an absolute dream to work on this with.”

The band are currently touring alongside Scottish indie-poppers The Spook School and recently added a second London date at The Moth Club after the first sold out.

‘Swear I’m Good At This’ was released this Spring via Frenchkiss Records to world-wide critical acclaim. It is the follow up to the infectious, 2015 ‘Over Easy’ EP – recently reissued, and almost immediately selling out, on “egg” shaped vinyl – that introduced the world to the band’s consistent sing-a-long lyrics with thrashing drums and strums that never held back. EP REVIEW: Vuromantics – ‘In The Night’

0

The band’s new EP, ‘In The Night’ will be released on 20th October (via Alya Records). Recorded at Junior Park Studios in their hometown, Sheffield, echoes of its music legends
can be found throughout the EP.

“Working with Will Stocks at Junior Park as a producer is great, as he creates a really relaxing environment where you can indulge your creative side, instead of having to constantly feel like you need to watch the clock,” says Sam.

The band have already released ‘In The Night’ from the EP so this is going to give you some idea of what you’ll be getting from the other four tracks. And I say ‘some’ because actually there’s a variety to the tracks that I find refreshing. All too often bands stick to one sound.

One thing you’re going to get is a distinct 80s electronica vibe to the tracks, it’s bought bang up to date but there is that feeling there. The vocals on some of the tracks had me flashing back to Heaven 17. The band themselves label their music as ‘northern dark pop’. I get the use of ‘pop’ but some of this doesn’t sound particularly dark. It’s ‘pop’ for me in that way that Heaven 17 and ABC were labelled as pop in the 80s. So don’t you go letting that use of ‘pop’ lead you into thinking this isn’t worthy of your attention.

‘In The Night’ is a strange one. It’s like a 70s soul track that’s been sprinkled with electronica. So on the one hand I’m back in the seedy ‘disco clubs’ I frequented in the late 70s – usually trying not to be beaten up by sailors on shore leave (but that’s another story) – but on the other I’m hearing all these bang up to date sounds. It’s confusing, it’s weird, it’s actually quite compelling. I have a particular fondness for the guitar sound in ‘In The Night’, it’s that thick chewy tone. Anyway I can let you hear this one.

The next track ‘Question’ I’m really not sure about at all. It treads much the same musical path as ‘Into The Night’ but, and it’s a big but, the band have decided to throw in these rather jarring vocal sections. These rather disrupt the smoothness of the rest of the track. I think there is the intention to have this voice act as a character in the song but for me it doesn’t quite work. It feels awkward.

‘The Wave’ is a rather beautiful piece of atmospheric electronica. I like this a lot. It’s layered keyboards, weirdly warped sounds, vocals blending in. It has this rather lovely shambling slightly Madchester thing going on. One of the EP standouts for me.

‘Not Over You’ is another of my favourites. Musically there are all sorts of things going on. Synth runs you just wait for. Little sounds in the background. Some quite wonderfully sparse drumming. Sam’s vocals are great on this. If you really had to reach for a FFO I’d say Heaven 17, but this is because it has that ‘big epic but sparse sound’.

I had to listen to ‘Glory’ several times before it really hit me, but for me, it’s the main reason you might get this EP. It’s big, it’s epic. It’s all sorts of influences blended into one fantastic whole. I’m a young person of the 80s so I hear early Human League, Heaven 17, ABC, The The in the mix. What this isn’t, even though I hear these influences, is mere copyism. It’s utterly original.

So what we have here is a collection of pop, classic pop. The sort of pop music I used to love, the sort you don’t get that much any more. It’s pop that isn’t throwaway, pop that is crafted, extremely well played and really well produced. It has that ‘this is too good to label as pop’ feel to it. Yes there’s one track I’m not keen on but that’s one track out of five, and others may well love it.

Vuromantics ‘In The Night’ EP is available to pre-order now at: https://www.musicglue.com/vuromantics/shop

The info

Vuromantics is Sam Christie (vocals), Jake Christie (guitar, keyboard), Callum Hall (bass, synth), Ben Rooker (synth) and Sergio Ali (drums).

Although brothers Sam and Jake initially intended to team up and write songs for the sole purpose of synchronisation in TV and film, they quickly realised the desire to play live couldn’t be ignored. Their sound built for a live setting – having consistently toured since March this year from the north to the south of the UK, Scotland and Wales – all before playing in their hometown.

ALBUM NEWS: The music of John Lee Hooker to be celebrated with new box set ‘King Of The Boogie’

0

Craft Recordings, the Catalog division of Concord Bicycle Music, has announced the release of ‘King Of The Boogie’, a career-spanning retrospective, honoring blues icon John Lee Hooker. Due out 6th October, the five-CD set delves deep into the catalog of the influential artist, featuring not only his iconic hits, but also rarities, live recordings and several previously unreleased tracks. Housed in a 56-page book, the collection includes a wide selection of photos, taken throughout the musician’s life, plus new liner notes by writer and John Lee Hooker historian Jas Obrecht, as well as by the artist’s longtime manager and friend, Mike Kappus.

John Lee Hooker (1917-2001) was born 100 years ago, near Clarksdale, Mississippi to a sharecropping family. Throughout the years, there has been some academic debate about his original birth year. However, The Hooker family maintains 1917 as the de facto date. Says daughter Zakiya Hooker, “As we all know there was no great push for accuracy back then in that portion of the community. But we just stick to what my father told us, which was what he was told by his mother.”

As a young man, Hooker worked his way up north to Detroit to pursue his passion of music. By 1948, the artist had a hit on his hands with one of his earliest recordings, ‘Boogie Chillun’’. From there, Hooker would record over 100 albums throughout the course of his six-decade-long career, building a diverse collection of fans along the way: from folk musicians and beatniks, to the stars of the British Invasion. The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana are among those who cite Hooker as a major influence. In his liner notes, Mike Kappus recalls that, “Everyone who knew John Lee Hooker loved him and felt privileged to be in his presence. While he influenced generations of musicians with his incomparable style, that impact on musicians stepped up to yet another level once they got to know and, universally, love him.”

In his later years, as the bluesman found himself in one of the busiest, most productive eras of his career, Hooker was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Blues Hall of Fame and Memphis Music Hall of Fame; was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and took home four GRAMMY® awards, including a coveted Lifetime Achievement award in 2000.

Tasked with narrowing down Hooker’s vast catalog into five CDs, box set producer Mason Williams curated the collection to narrate the artist’s story. “Even at 100 songs, this set is just a snapshot of John Lee Hooker’s incredible and influential career,” says Williams, “but one that takes you on the long journey he took from his early days in Detroit, to his time in Chicago recording for Vee-Jay Records and up through his later collaborations with Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt and Santana, among others.”

‘King Of The Boogie’ will be released as part of a year-long, multi-partner centennial celebration, honoring the music and influence of John Lee Hooker, and will be a companion piece to an exhibit of the same name, which kicks off today at the GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi. John Lee Hooker: King Of The Boogie includes Hooker’s performance outfits, guitars, photos, awards and, of course, his music. The exhibit will be on display through February 2018, before traveling west to the GRAMMY Museum® at L.A. LIVE. Additional centennial partners include The Blues Foundation, The Delta Blues Museum, Living Blues, Oxford American, the John Lee Hooker Estate, and Epiphone Guitars, who will be releasing a limited edition John Lee Hooker Zephyr Outfit, available in early 2018.
