GIG, ALBUM & VIDEO NEWS: Palace November tour, debut album album coming, drop video

0

As the release of their eagerly anticipated debut full length draws closer, PALACE have today shared the official video for their latest cut from the album; the darkly beautiful ‘Holy Smoke’. With its poignant lyrics and heartfelt vocal delivery, the track is a shining example of what to expect from the the band’s passionate and honest forthcoming record.

On the track, which premiered via Stereogum, front man Leo explains, “Someone once told me that when someone dies you have to open the window to let their soul escape. The Holy Smoke. This song is about being in that situation which I was, not that long ago. It’s about losing someone close to you, and experiencing something quite spiritual in the moments after death – when by their side.”

The band’s impressive live show has been witnessed by thousands this summer, following some roof raising festival performances at Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds and a sold out headline set at London’s ICA. They’re now preparing to head stateside for their first ever US show, which sees them take to the stage at Rough Trade NYC in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on 19th October.

The album ‘So Long Forever’ will be released 4th November on Fiction Records. The writing process began last autumn in The Arch – a creative nerve centre in deepest, darkest Tottenham packed with young artists, designers and muscians. It has been produced by Adam Jaffery (Beach Baby, Dev Hynes, Francis Lung) and mixed by Cenzo Townshend (The Maccabees, Florence + the Machine, Wild Beasts). The album artwork – as with all previous artwork – has been painted by Wilm Danby. Support from the band continues to come from Annie Mac, Huw Stephens and Phil Taggart at BBC Radio 1, Tom Ravenscroft at 6Music and Radio X’s John Kennedy and Maz Tappuni.

Palace are Leo Wyndham (guitar, vocals), Rupert Turner (guitar), Will Dorey (bass) and Matt Hodges (drums).

GIG NEWS: Gemma Ray & Joe Gideon tour in October and November

0

The last time Gemma Ray and Joe Gideon shared the stage together, it was duetting on ‘Leather & Lace’, in 2015 at the Barbican – a tribute concert to Lee Hazlewood that also featured the likes of Josh T Pearson, Kathryn Williams, Fran Healy and members of Portishead and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

Since then both acts have released new records and this double-bill sees both perform their respective albums with their respective bands in the UK for the first time (at least outside of London). Who knows, we may even get treated to a joint finale.

Gemma Ray’s sixth and latest album ‘The Exodus Suite’ is filled with her enigmatic torch song psychedelia and came out in May to much critical acclaim, with Uncut describing it as “a moving collision of past and present” (****) and Shindig as “intense, but incredibly rewarding” (****). MOJO opined that “Ray vamps, beautifully as always, through shivery glades of country, girl group drama, and Link Wray throb” (****).

The album was recorded at Candy Bomber in Berlin’s former Tempelhof airport, which during the recording became home to 8000 Syrian refugees. The albums title is a direct reference to this circumstance, an unhappy coincidence that mirrored some of Gemma’s lyrical explorations within the album.

Joe GideonJoe Gideon’s album ‘Versa Vice’ – his first outing since the break-up of Joe Gideon & The Shark – is a suitably idiosyncratic wig-out that MOJO described as an “intensely spirited, raw, dark rock debut”. His character-driven tales of falling apart at the seams, are delivered with meditative tenderness on the one hand, or, on the other, with a fierce post-punk left hook. The album also features Ed Harcourt on piano, Duke Garwood on horns and last but not least Jim Sclavunos (Grinderman/Bad Seeds) on drums. Sclavunos will be also be in Gideon’s band on this run of dates, together with multi-instrumentalist Gris De Lin on keys, bass and sax. “Pithy, powerful, lyrically erudite and observational, post-financial crisis English blues.” Mike Barnes – Writer for Mojo and Wire, and author of the Captain Beefheart: The Biography

LSF is now all about Yorkshire

0

We’ve changed the area we cover from Yorkshire and Lancashire to only covering Yorkshire. What this means for people looking for gig information and news and bands/promoters/venues is slightly different.

Bands and performers/promoters/venues

Our website and social media will include information about gigs,  concerts and events in Yorkshire and the surrounding areas that people living in Yorkshire can get to easily.

If the band or performer are from outside Yorkshire we will only include news about recorded music releases where this is associated with gigs and concerts played in the area above. We will not include standalone news about recorded music releases from bands outside Yorkshire.

Band and performer features, reviews and interviews are mainly restricted to bands and performers from Yorkshire. You can ask us if you fall outside of this, please do contact us and we’ll consider it – but please don’t be annoyed if we say no.

A note on reviews

Currently we are doing not reviews of either gigs/concerts or recorded music. This is while we are setting up new things. We are of course happy to run news pieces about new releases.

People living in Yorkshire

Music news

We cover music news and information about:

  • Music made in Yorkshire – this means that bands and performers who are based in Yorkshire will be featured on the website. We’ll include information about gigs and concerts played by bands and performers in Yorkshire and anywhere that people living in Yorkshire can get easily to see live music
  • Music played in Yorkshire – this means that gigs and concerts in Yorkshire by bands and performers from anywhere will be included

Gig and concert listings – On this website and on our social media feeds

Our gig and concert listing covers the whole of Yorkshire – this includes places like Middlesbrough which are officially part of Yorkshire. We also include gigs and concerts that are within easy reach of any part of our area.

Our Directory

The Directory covers any location where people living in our area might travel to.

Why are we doing this this?

We love Yorkshire – we live there – and we know that there is such good stuff going on in Yorkshire that we want to make sure that we can cover as much of it as we possibly can.

Our previous area was just too big to cover it anywhere near well.

What else is happening?

You may have noticed that our website is becoming more newsy. This is part of our changes designed to make the site and our social media more useful to both our readers and band/performers/venues/promoters.

If you have any questions about the change contact us for more information.

ALBUM & GIG NEWS: Beans on Toast’s 8th Studio album released 1st December ‘A Spanner in the Works’ and tour

0

However, as the name may suggest, this time around he’s decided to do things a little differently.

With his unfaltering DIY ethic still at the forefront of its making, ‘A Spanner In The Works’ sees Beans embracing technology to create a record simply made on a laptop, around a mate’s house. While the new recordings still have Beans’ trademark three chord folk songs at their heart, this time around each track is layered in myriad beats, loops, synths and samples, spanning an array of genres and styles, that make for an album by Beans unlike any you’ve heard before.

Lead track and album opener and ‘2016’, lulls the listener in with a teasing taste of the familiar being the only song on the record to feature any guitar. A classic Beans song and an ode to the mood of the country in what has been a tumultuous year. With celebrity deaths, terror threats, the referendum and the worrying rise of fascism, the track’s conscious lyrics see Beans trying to make sense of the year and making a stand for what’s right and good.

“It might not be the cheeriest Beans on Toast song ever, but sadly it’s been that kind of year.” reflects Beans.

From then on, you can strap yourself in for a different experience all together. ‘I Can Be That Tree’ sees the synths truly kick in on a song about Beans and his wife Lizzy Bee planting a tree in a public park to celebrate their first anniversary; it’s a true digital folk love song. Elsewhere, ‘The Drum Kit’ sees Beans getting bold and brassy, on a song that bitterly tackles the issue of the increasing closure of live music venues across the country; the very same music venues that Beans has spent the last decade playing, touring and working in for nearly a decade.

Epic album closer, ‘Fast Train’, sees Beans dabbling in the forgotten art of waltz for a song that takes on the worldwide problem of gentrification, a huge subject dealt with openly and honestly, as is Beans’ usual style.

The chewing of usual cogs doesn’t stop there, however and the record features a number of special guests. House vocal diva Alex Mills enters the frame on ‘We Made It To The Waterfall’ to add some fruity doo-waps reminiscent of the Sixties Girl Group sound. Elsewhere on the record, the brilliant Matt Millership from Tensheds drops in to lay down the keys on a number of tracks throughout the album. Speaking about his valuable contribution to the record, Beans says:

“Boy can [Matt] play! His honky tonk playing on drinking song ‘Down The Pub’ is out of this world. He also contributes to ‘Nanny Mac’ a song about my Nan living in the old East End and ‘It’s Only Natural’; a new anthem for stoners.”

Most special all of all these guests perhaps though, is the appearance of Beans’ own Mum, Pauline, who takes to the mic to add her thoughts on the looming threat of climate change on ‘Fear Mongering Clap Trap’.

Recorded over a single weekend with old friend and long time collaborator Scampi Dan, the album is a fresh and different, but very much a welcome addition to the Beans On Toast catalogue.

Talking about the making of A Spanner In The Works, Beans On Toast says:

“For this album I came up with the name first and had the urge to do something little different when recording it. The idea of doing it without guitars seemed like a suitable spanner. The sounds and rhythms you can make on a computer are absolutely endless and we had a lot of fun exploring that world, as it’s interesting to see how many twisting paths a song can go down after it’s been written. I’m super proud of this album, it’s a bit different but to me it’s still folk music and it sits well with all my other albums, past and future.”

As Beans On Toast prepares to embark on his annual Winter tour of the UK, you’d be forgiven for wondering how the new set up will impact the stripped back live show we have come to know and love. Fear not, there’s no plan to start taking laptops on stage and pressing play. At the live shows the album will all be played on the usual guitar, banjo, harmonica set up, in the way they were originally written. As usual Beans doesn’t pull any punches, he says it as it is. Protest songs, heart on his sleeve love songs and social commentary that feels just like a conversation with your mates down the pub.

Ngod, the five-piece Bradford rockers fronted by Sam Augustine, unleash their latest single, ‘Can You Hear Me?’.

This summer they have performed at Y Not, Standon Calling and Underground Festival & Festival No. 6.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: The Pigeon Detectives are back with new single ‘Lose Control’ and a tour

0

The new record from the band is a more eclectic LP than previous albums and was recorded with Richard Formby; a producer associated with bands like indie crooners Wild Beasts, leftfield London vocalist Ghostpoet and ‘mind-expanding synth pioneers’ Spaceman 3. Speaking about the move to work with a more leftfield producer-singer Matt Bowman says;

“We wanted to work with someone that would challenge us in the studio and put us out of our comfort zone, not let us take any easy ways out with songs. Richard did this and made us change our approach completely from previous records. We ended up ditching a lot of tunes that had a sound that could have been on the first albums as a result.'”

First single ‘Lose Control’ is the most reminiscent of the previous Pigeon Detectives output but still stands alone next to the catalogue with a hypnotic guitar line and rumbling rhythm section leading into the typical earworm chorus line of ‘You love it when I lose control’. The single is released online on 30 September and comes with a small venue tour that sold out in days taking the band to intimate surroundings across the UK before heading out on a larger tour in 2017.

LIVE REVIEW: Hands Off Gretel supported by Pretty Addicted, Desensitised & Alisha Vickers, Barnsley Rock & Blues, 16th September

0
Hands Off Gretel

Before I start the review proper I have to say that, due to the vagaries of the Northern Rail ‘timetable’ I was late to this gig. Late enough to only catch the second half of the opening act’s performance. If it hadn’t have been for the rather fab staff at the Barnsley Premier Inn – who immediately booked a taxi for me to get to the venue – I’d have missed this completely.

There are two other things – firstly that this gig was hot, not just in terms of the bands, but in temperature. So hot that from the moment I walked into Barnsley’s Rock & Blues Venue I was completely sweat soaked, leaving me completely unable to write any notes and in serious danger of dropping my camera. And secondly that reviewing this hometown celebration gig is a bit like reviewing a party, not a gig. It had that atmosphere. So I was very tempted just to publish the photos. But review it I must so here goes. By the way there’s some more images of the bands performing in a photo album on our Facebook Page

By the way Barnsley Rock & Blues is a great venue, intimate enough so that you actually see the bands properly and with a stage not a platform. They get some great acts on as well. It does however have what is probably the narrowest pit I’ve ever seen, it got a bit crowded on the night.

Alisha Vickers
Alisha Vickers

As I walked in Alisha Vickers was singing her heart out. I was immediately stunned with the quality of her voice. I was already aware of her from a cover of ‘Glorybox’ I’d heard and been impressed with (not an easy feat as this is my favourite song as you’d know from my perfect song list and my covers column), so I was disappointed to only catch half of her set. Sometimes you only need songs really well sung with a simple guitar backing, this was one of those times. The audience – Lauren included – were mesmerised. One to catch live if you get the opportunity.

Desensitised
Desensitised

Next up were Desensitised. And much as it pains me to say it, I wasn’t quite grabbed by them. There sound is sort of like Joan Jett or Rock Goddess (and by this I mean Rock Goddess in the 80s not the current reformed version). They’re clearly talented – as the recorded tracks on their Facebook Page show – but on the night they were just not my sort of thing. There’s video of their performance on their Facebook Page so you can make up your own mind.

Desensitised
Desensitised

As Pretty Addicted went on a fellow photographer leaned toward me and said “They’re about to offend all the parents in the room”. Given that, although I had heard of the band, but not heard or seen them before, I found this quite mystifying. Within seconds I knew exactly what he meant.

Pretty Addited
Pretty Addicted

Soundwise what Pretty Addicted give us is something that is hard to sum up – as I watched and listened Marilyn Manson, dirty period Depeche Mode (you know that ‘Personal Jesus’ time), touches of Giorgio Moroder, goth (there’s very definitely some Sisters of Mercy in there) flitted through my brain. But there’s a whole load of other, a unique sound. And what this doesn’t in any way is prepare us for the performance, and it is a performance. A whirlwind of a performance, a more than slightly disturbing performance. And this wasn’t just down to the clown make-up and the presence of an inflatable pig.

act372
Pretty Addicted

OK so some people might quibble about the fact that they use sequenced sounds – the live performance is Vicious Precious on vocals, Simon Deathless Koschei on drums and Harry McGuiness on bass – and to be honest I might well be one of those people usually but in this case I just don’t care.

Pretty Addicted
Pretty Addicted

Frankly their set left me speechless. I’ve not seen anything like it for quite some time. The last time a performance left me feeling like that was Fad Gadget – whose act used to include covering himself in tar and chicken feathers. If you get the chance to see Pretty Addicted do.

Pretty Addicted
Pretty Addicted

And so to the headliners, the reason we were all there, Hands Off Gretel. I first saw the band play Long Division in 2015, an age and several band changes ago. This was the first time I’d seen their new line-up (OK so it’s not so ‘new’ now but you know what I mean) play live so I was really looking forward to hearing them play the new stuff. Full disclosure I’m a fan of the band so don’t expect an objective review.

Lauren
Lauren

Before I go any further I have to mention that Sam – the drummer – was playing with broken fingers although this didn’t seem to have any effect on his playing, kudos to him. Joe – on bass – is a great addition. Lauren was in fine fine voice. And Sean played, as usual, some great guitar.

Lauren & Sean
Lauren & Sean
Joe

Sam

To be honest their all too short set, well it felt short to me probably because I was enjoying it so much, went by in a whirlwind. The crowd probably, and me for sure, was up for more at the end. Having said that it’s no bad thing to leave the audience wanting more.

Due to the problems with note taking I am left with highlights stuck in my head – Sean’s one dread whirling round as he played wonderful guitar, the slightly pained expression on Sam’s face as he drummed through the obvious discomfort in his hand, Lauren’s ability to go from a whisper to a scream, and the sense of togetherness in the room as we listened. The surprise (well for me anyway) as Lauren put down her guitar and just sang, I loved that song.

Live the new material really takes off, it’s really great in the recorded form, but for me Hands Off Gretel work best live. They all work off each other and the energy level is incredible.

I’m going to say that you should see this band if you like great grunge-y rock or you love music played with passion. The band are playing a whole host of dates in support of the new album and there’s almost bound to at least one date you can get to.

GIG NEWS: Torous tour in October and November

0

The band have toured the UK several times since their inception, opening for acts such as Rival State, Evil Scarecrow and Diamond Head – they have a live show held to a high esteem: “Torous have impressed just about everyone when they play live… they are incredible” writes Maximum Volume Music.

Marc Malone (Vocals/Guitar), GMT (Bass) and Tom Fenn (Drums) began the project in April 2014 and have since released a debut EP and will deliver their second single release in 2016 with ‘Colours’. The single is due for worldwide release via Holier Than Thou Records on Oct 7th. This will be the band’s second release via Holier Than Thou Records and will showcase a slightly more vocally driven sound from the band, continuing their (soon to be) trademark push into realms unfamiliar yet for them, remarkably comfortable. Frontman Marc Malone says; “Although it’s different to previous stuff, we are finding our feet with our identity more and more. It retains all key elements of what makes the band – the band, introspective lyrics, heavy riffs, solos, crazy tight drums and wicked bass lines.”

EP NEWS: Floodhounds release ‘Look What You’ve Started’ EP

0

With a BBC Introducing Live in Session, plus a fresh batch of new music ready to record this Autumn, FloodHounds have been roaming London and the North, including; Manchester, Leeds, Derby and York, and playing the kind of music that prompted It’s All Indie blog to say “it might be 10 am on a Sunday morning… but FloodHounds are making me feel like it’s 10pm on a Friday night.”

The trio were picked, out of 1,200 unsigned bands applying for official emerging slots, to play at Sheffield’s iconic Leadmill for Tramlines 2015, to rave reviews from Sheffield’s own Exposed Magazine; “FloodHounds’ rock n roll flawlessness, accompanied by a cheeky enticingness in lyrics, is a perfect addition to the South Yorkshire Sound.

The band’s new 3-piece incarnation emerged late 2014, when founder members Jack Flynn – the vocalist, guitarist and songwriter of the band – and bass player Rhys Owens, were joined by drummer Lauren Greaves.

Jack tells us about the tracks on the EP

Our single ‘A & E’ is one of my favourites. It’s a buoyant optimist “indie” track – but it packs a punch. There’s never a storyline as such in our lyrics, but A&E highlights how some people can fill you with the confidence to “take on the world” but there’s a finite sadness to it too, you know that “wave is going to break,” but you let it “wash over” you anyway because you know it’s inevitable. There’s a certain roadtrippyness about it, particularly with the instrumentals at the end.

‘Soulmates to Cellmates’ is one of our favourites to play live, its punchy and hard hitting. Lauren’s drums and Rhy’s bass lines are just spot on. The video we did for 2weeks2makeit competition – of two orange clad inmates slugging it out in a love/hate “prison” of their own making, pretty much highlights the theme we were going for

‘The Fear’ – Born at Boomtown – when we were drinking in all those brilliant “Reggae” beats, and there’s a definite back beat of that in it, but we also mixed in with a modern indie feel.

‘End of the Road’, is the track we took the EP title “Look what you’ve started” from, and again it’s very satisfying to play live, with sharply defined drums and I really enjoy the definitive ending “ so forgive me when I tell you that you won’t get no more blood from this stone.”

‘State of Mind’, dives into a retro pared-down Kinkish feel, it’s based on a strong bass rhythm line that circles back to the start, like thoughts.

‘Greatest Mistake’ is a departure from our fast and furious rock pace – it’s bigger, slower, more reflective and thoughtful, but still with trademark guitar instrumentals at the end.
