SINGLE REVIEW: Oliver Pinder – ‘Lockdown’

0

Beautiful, that’s the only way to describe ‘Lockdown’. This is the saddest song, although it has the a sort of joyful sadness in the music that makes it compulsive listening. Before we go any further I think it needs a word of explanation. Listen to the lyrics – and the words in this song are so so important – and you may not be able to work out quite what it’s actually about. I couldn’t anyway. But once you know that Oliver says, “’Lockdown’ is about falling out of love with something you thought you’d love forever and how slowly your love will just fade away”, it all makes sense.

The arrangement is simple, there are swells of guitar, drums, keys and cello but Oliver lets the words and his voice do the work and it’s all the better for than. But there’s more to the arrangement than that, it follows the story, the music fits the story.

There are moments on this track where the sheer intensity of it almost is too much, it reaches a point where listening to it is almost painful but there’s a pull back, the sounds swells and that chorus, a chorus that gets into your head, comes in.

You’ll find yourself waiting for that moment when, close to the end, Oliver sings over a shimmering cymbal and the chorus over a stripped down arrangement. And then it just ends, there’s no fade, one moment it’s there and the next gone.

If you like your songs to be thoughtful and thought provoking this is for you. If you like your songs incredibly beautiful and full of emotion, this is for you.

The single is available on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/7pIiaxX7ozHbmaAaBLN6Ri

VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: FOREVER CULT video for ‘Usurper’, upcoming dates

0

Forever Cult have unveiled a video for latest single ‘Usurper’. Abrasive, fuzzy and oscillating, the track is a sonic depiction of a night out escalating. ‘Usurper’ is also the first track featuring the band’s newly recruited second guitarist Wilko.

“We’ve gathered here today to share the video for our new single ‘Usurper’ with you. Now the video itself was something of a fluke. In fact, go watch it first, then come back read this as there’s too many spoilers here for you to enjoy it. Go on, off you pop. Right, all done? Watched it all? That bit with the dragon & that at the end too yeah? Sound. Then allow me to continue… The video, as I say, was a total fluke. Scott who runs our label (Clue Records) had a fully made video for another band’s song but it didn’t match. So he cleverly chopped it all up & made it work for Usurper. Somehow the planets aligned & we have this wondrous package to show to you today. You wouldn’t even know it was made for a different tune would you? So maybe forget this bit & just enjoy yeah? Ta. This is the start of a busy year. 3 new singles are coming then we might start talking about a longer piece of music that begins with an a but til then, enjoy & come see us live over the summer. Love you loads, whoever, however & wherever you are. FC xoxoxox”
Forever Cult – ‘Usurper’

Produced By Matt Peel (Eagulls, Bad Breeding) at Leeds studio The Nave, Usurper follows 2017’s EP Homewrecker on Clue Records which streamed with DIY Magazine pre-release. The band recently returned to The Nave to record the follow up to this EP, due later this year – check out an in the studio gallery at Upset magazine.

“We’ve been quiet for a little while but it’s taken time to develop our sound again. New songs are coming thick and fast in a totally different way to usual. We’re writing all together in a practise room jamming out ideas more than before. It’s really exciting all over again and has really given us a new lease of life”
– Alex (Bass)

Forever Cult won’t be hiding away in the studio, announcing their support to Queen Zee on select shows, alongside Falsetival, Live At Leeds, Hit The North, The Great Escape and Neverworld festivals. Further live dates will be announced soon.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Josh Rouse “Love In The Modern Age” Out April 13 via Yep Roc Records, tour April 2018

0

Inspired By The Blue Nile, The Style Council, Prefab Sprout and Roxy Music Singer-songwriter Josh Rouse will release his new album ‘Love in the Modern Age’ on April 13, 2018 via Yep Roc Records.

Similar to his work on his album 1972 where he captured the aesthetics of a specific moment in time, Josh’s new album takes inspiration from the sound and production of early 1980’s releases by The Blue Nile, The Style Council and Prefab Sprout. Also serving as inspiration were Roxy Music’s Avalon, Leonard Cohen’s Various Positions and I’m Your Man. Non-ironic touches like sax, handclaps, reverbed guitar, backing vocals and keyboards give the moody but infectious songs a New Romantic flair.

Josh Rouse has solidified his status as one of his generation’s most acclaimed songwriters in both the US and Europe, where he’s lived on and off since 2004. Spending the better part of a year touring behind his critically acclaimed eleventh album, The Embers of Time, Rouse was ready for a change. “Coming off such a heavy record, I wanted to try something different,” he explains. “I wanted to explore new sounds and write with a fresh backdrop.”

Trading in his trusty acoustic guitar for a synthesizer, Love in the Modern Age still bears Rouse’s distinct fingerprints even as it pushes his limits, and forges a bold new chapter more than twenty years into his celebrated career.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Gretchen Peters announces new album, dates May-August 2018

0

She releases ‘Dancing With The Beast’ on 18th May via Proper Records

The new album puts female characters at the fore, from teenage girls to old women. And intentionally so. With the 2017 Women’s March and the #MeToo Movement as bookends to her writing time, Peters knew that a feminist perspective would be the critical core of the record.

She admits, “You can trace the feminist DNA in my songwriting back to ‘Independence Day’ and probably before. The thing that 2017 did is just put it front and center.” Though Peters doesn’t consider herself a political writer, she is politically minded and, therefore, knew she had to address the 2016 election and all that has happened since… but in her own way.

THERE’S A WORLD OUT THERE – EP REVIEW: INK – ‘Part 1’

0

OK so INK are one of those bands where if you described quite what they sound like you’d get ‘quite what the hell are you talking about, there’s no way that would work’. So let me say right from the start that this is simply great, it’s something that’ll have you dancing, something that’ll have you thinking ‘well this is huge fun’. But there’s a depth to this as you’ll see.

So simply put INK fuse Ska, Funk, Reggae and Jazz influences and seemingly anything else they like into something all of their own. Something that is fantastic. And a big part of that something of their own is the vocals. INK’s vocalist Molly just has this voice that grabs you, she’s toasting one moment, she’s all sultry jazz the next. But obviously you can’t just rely on a voice however good it may be, you need people who know how to play, and in INK’s case play a variety of styles, well. INK has that.

This EP has two tracks (surely, I hear people of a certain age say, that makes it a single, didn’t singles always have two tracks? To which my response is, not any more, a single is one single track, anything more is just NOT A SINGLE, can you just stop hassling me about it please) ‘Mud’ and ‘Astrix’. They are both different but somehow still obviously the same band playing, they are on the same, how shall we put it, spectrum.

‘Mud’ opens with just a bass, then the drums come in, and then the band are into a ska-y/reggae thing, the saxophone just rasps in (sorry I forgot to mention that the band features a saxophone player) and Molly just comes in with this toasting, but strangely lilting vocal. She has this rather thrilling tendency to punctuate her vocals with these yelps. And her voice is low, way low. So yeah you could just sit and listen to it, you’d enjoy it (I’m doing that right now), but this is music you can dance to. ‘Mud’ has at points what I can only describe as rather sexy rhythm, it’s not fast but you could gently shank to it, preferably with your chosen partner or potential partner. And then it speeds up, it gets all a bit klezmer, a bit wilder.

For me ‘Astrix’ is the standout track of the two. It’s slower, it’s more sultry (at least at first). It opens with saxophone and then this halting ‘riff’ but then the guitar goes all light and then Molly comes in, she’s toasting jazz style, there’s these rather lovely light jazzy/reggae sounds going on. It seems to be finishing but no, there’s almost classical sounding guitar, it all sounds a bit almost gospel, and what the bloody fuck is going on, there is this guitar, guitar that rocks out, it’s a thrill, a fucking thrill. There is a short vocal section and then the guitar kicks off, it screams, you can see the guitarist grimacing as he shreds out those notes. And then it fades. It sounds like a mess, it isn’t. It’s strangely and weirdly moving, Quite what this song is about I have no idea but it drips emotion. I almost couldn’t bear for this to end, when it ended I felt like something had been ripped out, there is only one solution, hit repeat, hit repeat again, and yet again. Annoy the neighbours by playing on repeat for ever, I don’t frankly care, I need this.

Look people this is fantastic but you need to approach this with open ears and an open mind. It’s not your average music, it’s hard to put into a niche. What it isn’t is one of ‘Frank’s weird bands’ – come on you all know I like stuff that isn’t easy to listen to – it is music with depth, played and sang exceptionally well.

Me I’m guessing INK are incredible live, and I’m making a big and important note to catch them playing.

The EP is now available on Spotify, ITunes and Soundcloud.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Bryde releases ‘Like An Island’ 13th April, tour April/May 2018

0

After setting up her label Seahorse Music to publish records by like-minded women and help make them more visible in a male-dominated industry, BRYDE finished up her debut LP ‘Like An Island’ flitting between London and LA.

Exploring themes of independence, liberation, and relationships, her inimitable brand of candid indie rock is realised with mixing help from Catherine Marks (Wolf Alice, PJ Harvey and St Vincent), and mastering by Mandy Parnell. Lyrically, London based Bryde finds intense internal poetry in everyday adversity. While concentrating thematically on life and human interaction, her songwriting persona wears her bruised yet resolute heart on her sleeve.

‘Like An Island’ comes out on Bryde’s own label Seahorse Music on the 13 of April and will be available to preorder. Support in the form of Women Make Music fund from PRS has been awarded to assist its release.

VIDEO NEWS: Avalanche Party drop video for latest single ‘Porcelain’

0

Avalanche Party have revealed a video for latest single ‘Porcelain’. The track captures the quintet at their finest – oozing bucketloads of energy and charisma, contagious soundscapes and meticulous attention to detail.

“This is pure method acting. In an attempt to capture the hard psychosis created from desperately wanting something out of your control, the subject locked himself in a bare room and stayed awake for eight days straight on a diet of Quickfire Long-Lasting Firelighters and Cif Cream Cleaner. Here are the results”
Avalanche Party – ‘Porcelain’

Porcelain is available digitally, and also on 12” limited edition blood red vinyl alongside three other tracks – including previous single ‘I’m So Wet’.
Purchase at: http://www.cluerecords.com

Avalanche Party were formed by brothers Jordan and Joe, who spent summers in their youth in the Yorkshire dales, camping by firelight, and their winters snowed into their isolated hill top home with nothing but the sounds of Bo Diddley, Link Wray, Wilko Johnson and Jimi Hendrix to keep them company. The boys played their first gig at the age of twelve, and music is ingrained in their being.

Live is where Avalanche Party reign. Their brand of feral garage-punk is intense and immediate, brimming with an urgency that explodes on the stage, every note played through white knuckles, every word spat through gritted teeth. Vocalist Jordan Bell fearlessly parades amongst the crowd, supported by the captivating sonic backbone that is guitarist Jared Thorpe, bassist Joe Bell, Kane Waterfield on drums and Glen Adkins on keys. This undeniable musical chemistry has placed the band at the forefront of the British DIY scene, with live highlights including support to LIFE, Datsuns, Happy Mondays, alongside Reading & Leeds, Camden Rocks and Tramlines festivals.

The band wear their North Yorkshire roots with pride, having gigged the area relentlessly since their inception and gathering a fiercely loyal fanbase in the process. To pay homage, Avalanche Party will curate their own one-day festival at The Georgian Theatre in Stockton on 23rd June. Line-up and further details will be announced soon.

The band are now gearing up for the This Feeling tour throughout the UK this April, and will also play Live At Leeds, Hit The North and Electric Fields Festival. Further live dates will be announced soon.

LIVE REVIEW: Todmorden Orchestra Todmorden 17th March & Antony and friends 24th March, Central Methodist Church, Todmorden

0

Spring Romance Todmorden Orchestra 17 March 2018

The concert began with a robust and lively overture from Berlioz, “Les Franc-Juges”. The next piece was Spohr’s clarinet concerto number 1. Rachael Gibbon’s expressive and skilled performance was a treat for lovers of this instrument.

The concert concluded with Dvorak’s eighth symphony, featuring a leading role for the flutes, and including a gorgeous ¾ time movement. The orchestra did it full justice.

The next TO concert is on 23 June and features film music.

Antony and friends 24 March 2018

This concert featured Andrew Rostron on violin as well as Antony Brannick on piano. It began with both players in Beethoven’s melodious Romance no 1 (op 40), and continued with the same composer’s Piano Sonata no 31 (op 110). This was a piece of rapidly changing moods, ably interpreted by Antony Brannick.

After the interval were two pieces by Brahms. First came the regretful-feeling Intermezzo (op 117 no 2), for piano. Both players were at their best in the last piece of the evening, the Violin Sonata no 3. Moods varied from solemn to forceful to stormy, and Brahms’ score used each instrument to its best advantage, contrasting the turbulent piano and the flowing violin.

The next concert is on 14 April, featuring percussion. To get on the mailing list contact Antony on abrannick@garrattslaw.co.uk or 0161 665 3502.
