FESTIVAL NEWS: Underneath The Stars announces full line-up for the 2018 edition

0

South Yorkshire’s stellar music & arts festival Underneath The Stars returns this summer with another exciting line-up of established and emerging talent across the folk, jazz, roots, bluegrass, fusion and Americana music worlds, as well as the promise of enticing workshops, arts, crafts and food stalls, highlighting the creative talents of the Yorkshire region. Organised by the family production team of acclaimed Yorkshire folk singer-songwriter Kate Rusby, and now in its fifth year, 2018’s edition also sees its relocation to a brand-new site at Cinderhill Farm, Cawthorne, near Barnsley, and promises a warm welcome to this beautiful and cozy little corner of rural Yorkshire.

The line-up in full is as follows:

Steve Earle & The Dukes / Kate Rusby /
George Hinchliffe’s Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain / Lau /
Joanne Harris and the Storytime Band / The California Feetwarmers / Yves Lambert Trio / Damien O’Kane & Ron Block / Grace Petrie /
Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards / Melrose Quartet /
The Adventures of Andy Kershaw / Fat Suit / Honeyfeet / Estbel /
John Metcalfe / Midnight Skyracer / Amythyst Kiah / Jack Rutter /
Lori Watson / Kizzy Crawford / Jack Harris /
Howlin’ Ric & The Rocketeers / Stables / Pitou / Hearts at War /
Barnsley Youth Choir / L-R

Heading this year’s line-up are Grammy Award winning songwriter and activist Steve Earle with his band The Dukes, as well as Barnsley born and bred Kate Rusby, with her disarming mixture of down to earth charm and otherworldly vocals. George Hinchliffe’s Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain will be presenting their hilarious, virtuosic, twanging, foot-stomping obituary of rock-n-roll and melodious light entertainment featuring only the “bonsai guitar”. Lau – “the most musically adventurous trio in British folk” (The Guardian) – appear too, with their unique explorations of acoustic folk tradition and electronica. Barnsley based best-selling author Joanne Harris, most famous for her novel ‘Chocolat’, will also be presenting a special audio-visual show combining original music, songs and stories with The Storytime Band.

Elsewhere The California Feetwarmers provide boisterous on-stage antics to accompany their re-workings of classics from The Blue Ridge Playboys, Scott Joplin, The Memphis Jugband and Emile Grimshaw’s Rag Pickers, and Yves Lambert Trio – Yves being one of the most influential and legendary players in Quebec’s traditional roots music scene – fronts a trio playing diatonic button accordions, harmonica, jaw harp, and percussion. Two of the world’s finest instrumentalists Damien O’Kane & Ron Block (Ron being a member of Grammy-winning band Alison Krauss and Union Station, and Damien a stand-out solo artist, member of Kate Rusby’s band and one of the best banjo players in the Irish music scene) perform together in the bluegrass-country tradition. Grace Petrie brings her inimitable takes on life, love and politics, that has won her scores of fans across the alternative, folk, political and comedy scenes. Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards also feature with their superb string playing, Sheffield-based ensemble (featuring BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year, Nancy Kerr) Melrose Quartet will appear, and The Adventures of Andy Kershaw – a one-man audio-visual show from the legendary broadcaster and foreign correspondent – is sure to be a highlight.

Scottish collective Fat Suit mix the worlds of jazz, funk and soul, Honeyfeet offer a righteous blast of energy once called Folk-Hop and Barrelhouse-pop, Estebel are a rare line-up of two nightingales from Estonia and two Flemish brothers from Belgium, and John Metcalfe – one the most exciting and versatile musicians and sought-after arrangers and composers in the UK, having worked with Morrissey, Coldplay, Bat For Lashes, Blur, George Michael, Johnny Marr and Tom Jones – features in what will be an incredibly compelling performance. Midnight Skyracer provide some driving bluegrass, Amythyst Kiah brings her self-described Southern-Gothic alt-country all the way from Johnson City, Tennessee, and there will be folk music from acclaimed young English folk singer and multi-instrumentalist Jack Rutter. Also here is award winning interpreter of Scottish folk and song, Lori Watson, whose recent album was awarded album of the month in The Guardian. 20-year-old Welsh speaker with Bajan heritage (fusing bilingual soul-folk jazz) Kizzy Crawford is sure to be captivating, as is English singer-songwriter Jack Harris.

Howlin’ Ric & The Rocketeers bring original Rock & Roll and Rhythm & Blues with a classic sound, Stables – a new alt-folk duo comprising Matthew Lowe lead singer of Keston Cobblers Club and Daniel Trenholme – will be one to see, as will the unique voice of internationally-tipped, Amsterdam-born folk-pop musician Pitou. Hearts at War – featuring the incredible vocal talents of Rosie Doonan, Louise Hull and Megan Barber follow, and the Barnsley Youth Choir return after a triumphant set at last year’s event. L-R meld heart wrenching songs and dance of the Asturian countryside with the bluesy grit of the Gretsch guitar.

In addition to two towering big-top music venues (the mainstage is fully seated, with an “attentive concert hall” ambience, stage two is a standing venue for a more boisterous atmosphere) the festival site features lively street-arts performers, workshop activities, handmade crafts and vintage stalls as well as boutique street food vendors and bar areas. A brand-new Makers Market is also introduced this year which prioritises fair and ethical trading, environmental sustainability, value for money to customers, creativity and innovation. 2018’s food vendors have all been hand-picked for their creativity, quality ingredients and value for money, as has the range of local real ales, ciders, wines and spirits available at The Festival Bar.

A great deal of attention has also been put into guest comfort, with provisions for a high level of accessibility for those with disabilities, and even a pre-pitched luxury camping option available to weekend ticket holders.

SINGLE REVIEW: Mega Happy – ‘Stubborn’

0

Mega Happy are not sounding all that happy on this their new single to be honest. And I don’t mean that in a bad way, it’s just that it’s all a bit of a sad song. But I like a song that has an edge of sadness. It’s in the warped feel to this track.

Quite why the band thought let’s write a song that starts with the line ‘a brand new day makes me think of suicide’, and then just warp and twist everything I have no idea, no idea at all. And yet I am strangely happy, or even – please forgive me for this – mega happy, that they did.

It sounds like a sort of warped New Order or early Blancmange and then again warped surf psych, And then again it’s quite jaunty in places. It’s quite hard to describe really. But take my word for it, it sounds brilliant. And the production on this is quite wonderfully lo-fi. Those keyboards sound as though they’re on the edge of failure and then set to a really quite cheesy preset, but it works people. And then there’s this rather jaunty sort of Orange Juice-y thing going on at some points. The vocals are brilliantly not perfect and yet in in their imperfection quite quite perfect. It almost sounds like two songs mashed together. It’s twisted, it just makes no sense at all. It sounds mad but it it’s just right. You could dance to this but you’d have to dance in a world weary sort of slow way, or just be manic.

And before you think of ‘Stubborn’ as, let’s say, some sort of novelty or something not be taken seriously. Let me say that although it may sound a little crazy from my description, it’s actually a brilliantly arranged song. It’s very very clever, it treads that thin line between being a fabulous song and a mess and never falls over into a mess.

The very least you could do is to listen to this song, in fact I’m going to go as far as telling you to do that, and do it now. This is wonderful.

SINGLE REVIEW: Regan – ‘Not Too Late’

0

This the third single from Regan I’ve reviewed – the previous two being ‘Four Fingers’ and ‘Broken Promises’ – and they just keep on getting better.

Let’s say right from the start this thing rocks, it rocks hard. It has guitar in spades and it pounds its way into your head. And yet – in that Regan way – it has a tune people, a tune you can hum, a tune that you’ll find getting into your brain, and it just won’t go away.

The thing about Regan is that somehow they manage to meld together alt-rock, heavy rock and frankly old style NWOBHM sounds into something all of their own. The guitar is all sort of old style metal, the song structure is all sort of alt-rock, the way the vocals go is distinctly alt-rock but strangely metal in places and it has this heavy rock tune thing going on. It sounds like it shouldn’t work but it does. So given your inclination, you could mosh or dance to this, it’s simply very very clever. But ignore the cleverness of it all and just revel in the guitar, the drumming – which is as usual great, the noise of it, those guitars – those growling, riffing, screaming guitars, and just fucking rock out people. Live this is going to be killer.

Regan do it again, it’s as simple as that.

The single is available on all online platforms.

The official single launch will take place tomorrow at The Underground in Bradford – Info here

ARTIST NEWS: Multi-instrumentalist Toni Bunnell to launch her new album at award-winning Mini-Fest

0

Toni’s newest album, which consists of twelve new songs, will be launched at the mini-fest where she’ll show off her incredible multi-instrumental skills by performing with the bouzouki, guitar, Appalachian dulcimer and hurdy gurdy.

Toni has a reputation on the folk scene which is unparalleled anywhere else and has been performing at folk clubs and festivals in the UK and Germany, as well as on television and radio, for years. Her previous albums such as Tune on a Shady Beach and Where I Come From have received rave reviews with many dubbing her as the voice of folk music.

Toni Bunnell says “I am thrilled to be performing at the mini-fest, which will help enormously to support the charity which York’s Little Festival of Live Music has chosen to support. I am also delighted to be launching my latest album in one of my favourite venues in York”.

Ellen Curator of York’s Little Festival of Live Music goes on to say “I adore working with Toni and was over the moon when I heard that she wanted to be a part of this year’s festival. Toni is the perfect story-teller through folk music and her performances are truly mesmerising. The Acoustic and Folk Mini-Fest will be showing a wide range of folk and acoustic genres, including Celtic, Gypsy, Modern Folk, Gentle Americana, Nordic… and we even have a Viking-style band performing which is going to be a treat! This year we are fundraising for The Island Mentoring Scheme which is a local charity supporting vulnerable children and young people living in York. It’s a great charity, which does great work with many children and I was delighted that they wanted to be a part of this adventure. This year’s mini-fest is going to have something for everyone and is one not to be missed.”

Toni will be selling copies of her latest album, so anyone interested in purchasing one, please head over to the merchandise table or see Toni after her performance. Her CD will be available to purchase online from 31 March at www.tonibunnell.com

Playing alongside Toni Bunnell at this year’s mini-fest are: rising young performer Scarlett Gordon, gypsy-celtic group Leather’o, norse folk group Bruni, local acoustic legend David Ward Maclean, Plumhall’s Nick Hall (who will be performing a rare solo set) and voice of an angel Edwina Hayes, who has won her reputation as a true natural talent of gentle folk-Americana and will be headlining the Mini-Fest.

Entry into the festival is free of charge, however a suggested donation of £5 will be welcomed. These donations will be given entirely to the festival’s chosen charity which is The Island Mentoring Scheme.

York’s Little Festival of Live Music’s Mini-Fest will take place on Saturday 31 March from 2.30pm-9pm (doors open at 2.15pm) at The Black Swan Inn on Peasholme Green, York.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Frank Turner releases ‘Blackout’, dates April/May 2018

0

Frank Turner reveals the first single from his new album Be More Kind today. Blackout is available through Xtra Mile Recordings/Polydor Records and, says Turner, “is new territory for me, musically – a song you could even play in a club, it’s about how we might collectively respond to social dislocation and collapse…” The accompanying video was directed by Michael Baldwin and shot on the George Lucas stage at the famous Elstree Studios, the same studio complex where key scenes from numerous legendary films including Star Wars and the Indiana Jones trilogies have been shot over its 90 year history.

Be More Kind represents a thematic and sonic line in the sand for the 36-year-old. “I wanted to try and get out of my comfort zone and do something different,” says Turner.

After the stripped-down, live-sounding previous album Positive Songs…, Turner wanted to try a new approach for the record. With this in mind he recruited producers Austin Jenkins and Joshua Block, formerly of psychedelic-rock Texans White Denim, and Florence And The Machine and Halsey collaborator Charlie Hugall and the idea of recording a more rock-led album with tints of electronic-pop took shape. Be More Kind was made over a period of seven months, giving Turner the opportunity to turn songs on their head, try different versions and shake up the dynamics within his band.

Be More Kind was inspired by a Clive James poem called Leçons Des Ténèbres: “I should have been more kind. It is my fate. To find this out, but find it out too late.” “It devastated me the first time I read it,” he says. “A lot of older, wiser people tend to say things like that, that the things that come out in the wash at the end of a human life are the way you treated the people around you. In the modern world, that’s a lesson that all of us, myself included could do to learn.”

VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: Ducking Punches drop video for ‘I Ruin Everything’, April 2018 tour

0

Airing the first new video since the release of their assured fourth album ‘Alamort’ (out now via the Xtra Mile Recordings label), punk rock four piece DUCKING PUNCHES are delighted to present: ’I Ruin Everything’.

An earnest and insightful invitation into the world of the East Anglian quartet, this latest video also sees the band open up about the making of their triumphant new studio album and how it threw them an emotional lifeline in a time of greatest need.

Speaking about this latest single and video, Ducking Punches frontman Dan Allen says:

“This is the most honest song on the record for me and writing this song saved my life in a very dark time, I was pretty close to checking out…. Charlie (the director) asked us all individually one question “What does the record mean to you?” Making this album made me feel alive again and those release shows really cemented that for me. I think it’s why this video is so special. Charlie did an amazing job on it.”

Inter-spliced with scintillating live footage of Ducking Punches performing at their hometown ‘Alamort’ Album Launch Show in Norwich this February, the video provides a raw and thrilling reminder of the mammoth run of live dates that the band will be tackling throughout April 2018.

‘ALBUM RELEASE TOUR’

7 – Peterborough, The Ostrich
8 – Bristol, Crofter’s Rights
9 – Liverpool, Maguire’s Pizza Bar
10 – Leeds, The Key Club
11 – Bradford, The 1 in 12
12 – Warrington, Old Town House
13 – London, Nightclub Kolis
14 – Brighton, Washed Out Festival
15 – Kings Lynn, Worker’s Club
16 – Nottingham, Bodega
17 – Newport, Le Pub
18 – Stourbridge, The River Rooms
19 – Manchester Punk Festival
27 – Bolton, The Alma Inn
28 – Huddersfield, The Parish

Coming good on their promise for an altogether darker, heavier and more bruising affair on their upcoming album, the band teased the release of ‘Alamort’ with three gloriously adrenaline-laced tracks’: “Sobriety”, ’’Smoking Spot”, and most recently “Distant Shadows” (as heard on the BBC Radio 1 Rock Show).

Each tracked and mixed at Crooked Rain Studio in Leeds by Bob Cooper (Nai Harvest / Citizen / The Orielles) and further mastered at Sonic Iguana Studio by punk-rock guru Mass Giorgini (Anti-Flag / Rise Against), this hat-trick of singles are all tell-tale signs of a band reborn and with an unquenchable lust to dabble in rock’s darker delights.

With its title taken from an old archaic term meaning to be ‘half dead from exhaustion’, ‘Alamort’, the tense and exhilarating new album from Ducking Punches will be released on 16th of February 2018 through the Xtra Mile Recordings label.

Originally the solo acoustic songs of vocalist and guitarist Dan Allen, Ducking Punches are now a punk / folk / rock quartet. Hailing from Norwich, the band have over 1,000 shows under their belt, including a European tour in 2014 with Frank Turner and Andrew Jackson Jihad, as well as festival sets at Reading and Leeds, Download, Groezrock, FEST and support slots alongside The Hold Steady, The Menzingers, Teenage Bottlerocket, Franz Nicolay and Leatherface. With three former albums, including their first on XMR, ‘Fizzy Brain’, they’ve collectively cranked the vitality and volume while building melody, texture and drama with violins, gang vocals and amplification, all the while retaining the pace and dynamics that brought Ducking Punches to such live acclaim.

Ducking Punches are:
Dan Allen // Pete Wright // Marcus Gooda // Ryan Hillier

SINGLE REVIEW: Silver Wilson – ‘Let You Go’

0

‘Let You Go’ was released a little while ago but somehow we missed it. Our first listen convinced us that we should go ahead and review although late coming to it.

Oh boy is ‘Let You Go’ ear wormy, that melody is huge. It’s infectious, summery – even in the midst of snow storms – and fun. But it has this really great almost epic feel that sneaks up on you.

Yep there’s an indie edge to this but it’s really poppy and way danceable people. But let’s say you were made to sit and listen to it, you’re not going to miss out, there’s a great production, different things coming at you. Just when you think you know what’s coming they throw something else at you. This is no lightweight pop single, there’s a depth to it. Listen closely and you’ll hear some rather lovely guitar going on, and some really clever drums. In fact it was the drumming on this track that made me sit up and listen, there’s lovely space to it, it’s sparse but drives the song beautifully.

I really like good pop, but it has to be good. It has to match up to my perfect pop moments. It has to convince me that it’s produced and played with feeling, skill and attention to detail. Silver Wilson have me convinced.

The info

Leeds/Nottingham indie band Silver Wilson started life in late 2015 and using fresh ideas they began making indie music with an original twist. Incorporating new technology with a mix of indie of guitars, bass, and drums, the band have organically built a loyal following for their summery danceable guitar-indie-pop.

SINGLE REVIEW: CWM – ‘Homely Streets’

0

Having been told that this was rather different to their previous songs I listened to those before taking a listen to this. And yes, as the band told me it’s way rawer than the band’s other releases. This no alt-rock track, there’s no quiet/loud going on here. It’s closer to being good old fashioned punk with a metal edge than pop-punk or dark rock, it has that guitar chugger-chugger thing going on. But I’m struck by vocals which are sort of old fashioned metal stylee, the vocals follow the riff, if you see what I mean. I kept getting vaguely reminded – and I mean very vaguely – of Vice Squad every time I listened to it, it’s just there as a hint of something for me. Equally I get hints – vague hints again – of Black Sabbath in places.

I may be making it sound a bit like a retro-fest, it isn’t because CWM have given it their own thing. They throw a radio-voice section into the mix, seemingly just for kicks, but it works. And they resist the temptation to do any major amounts of speeding up – which when you first listen to the song is what you think is going to happen. It slows down not up people. It’s a blast.

But actually the more I listened to this the more I started hearing things that I really liked, the drumming for one. The drumming on this track is damn fine. The guitar is hugely precise, for a song so riff based if it wasn’t it just would sound like a mess. I started really hearing the words and they are good – the song is actually about past friendships and how they are responsible for the people we are today. The production is fantastic, this is no muddy mess.

It’s one of things where I really liked the track but for the life of me I can’t put a finger on exactly why in any sort of useful to you, the reader, sort of way. Yes, the playing is great, and yes, the words are good but I just can’t, and I’m sorry, say quite why I found it quite possible to listen to this on repeat for ages and ages and enjoy it every time. The problem is that I have songs I can listen to again and again but there’s no common thread in style or musical genre, the only common thing is that the moment they finish I think actually I could listen to that again (and then again, and then again …). I guess that they all just hit the right nerve, and are addictive listening.

CWM have produced something really great, something that – for no reason I can pin down – is hugely addictive. Get this and get addicted.

The info

CWM say this – which seems as good an introduction as you’re going to have

“Hi,

We are CWM, a rock band from Sheffield playing our own hard-hitting mix of pop-punk and dark rock music. We enjoy many things from the rock band lifestyle: taking a month to agonize how best a bridge would sound; arguing incessantly over what our name actually stands for and creating the best god damn band hug known to man. Currently we are writing and recording our first album and are supporting it by playing live and aiming to get some press and radio coverage. We have played around Sheffield to our loyal, lovely fanbase who revel in questioning what our name actually means. Through amps mysteriously breaking around the singer, to a producer scarily and enthusiastically singing about touching his hand to his face: we remain focused and committed to our goals.

Our ambition is to entertain and we feel it best to leave it up to our audience whether that is through them listening to our music, or staring at a great, big, bushy beard.”

VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: Dream Wife drop video for ‘F.U.U.’. up coming dates March-August 2018

0

DREAM WIFE have shared their latest video for album closer and firm live favourite ’F.U.U.’ that sees them reunited with their long time visual collaborator Aidan Zamiri and features guest Icelandic rapper Fever Dream spitting bars.

“F.U.U.” is a ferocious livewire anthem at Dream Wife’s gigs, and it felt natural to team up for the video with the all female, and decidedly punk rock, EVE Wrestling. The band say: “For our new video for F.U.U consider: ROCK AND ROLL AS AN EXTREME SPORT. A place where everyone gets a 10, there are no winners, no losers, just high adrenaline, high octane good times.

F.U.U is a partly tongue in cheek, partly deadly serious exploration of gleeful aggression and where better to WORK OUT this aggression than in the wrestling ring?

We would like to thank all of the Bad Bitches, Aidan & the Dream Team and the gang at EVE WRESTLING from the bottom of our hearts, as they taught us; everyone is a wrestler, maybe they just don’t realise it yet.”

Dream Wife have just commenced their European tour. Following which they will open for The Vaccines on their UK arena tour.

Dream Wife are: Rakel Mjöll (lead vocals), Alice Go (guitar and vocals) and Bella Podpadec (bass and vocals).

Dream Wife the bands debut album is available to purchase physically HERE or digitally HERE.
