SINGLE & ALBUM NEWS: InVisions release ‘PARASITE’, confirm working on 2nd album

0

After the successful release of their debut album ‘Never Nothing’ in August 2017, InVisions refuse to slow down and are back with a hard hitting and in-your-face new single, ‘Parasite’, released today. The band also confirmed that they are working on a new album in 2018.

“Parasite is a straight up balls to the wall, in-your-face track which talks about cutting ties with a toxic element in your life. We knew we wanted to push our sound and see how dark we can make it and I think Parasite is definitely a new level of intensity for InVisions” – Lucas Gabb, Guitars.

The single is the first new material since the launch of the band’s successful debut album ‘Never Nothing’ in August 2017. It sees the band take a more aggressive approach to their writing with a more mature and heavier sound, the band hit the studio in late Summer 2018.

“We went in to pre-production for our second album immediately after Never Nothing was released. So far we have a collection of songs which, for the most part, are far heavier than
anything you’ve previously heard from us. ‘Parasite’ is a perfect example of that. It makes the hardest hitting songs from Never Nothing sound like nursery rhymes.” – Alex Scott, Guitars.

EP REVIEW: Waiting For Wednesday – ‘Routes’

0

So after a break away from music Waiting for Wednesday are back with the ‘Routes’ EP. Laura Shackleton of the band explains “this is our first set of recordings since taking a break to have children, but these are actually some of our oldest songs. We once again enlisted some friends to help flesh them out with full band arrangements, so love the fact the tracks reflect both our roots as a song writing duo and the new direction we’re heading in”.

I’m going to have to admit that I’m not big on that sort of ‘soulful country, blues and Americana’ sound but on my first play through the tracks I was captivated. It’s the voices you see, they are so full of feeling and just so damn darn good that you just can’t help but be drawn in. So let’s just detach ourselves from any sort of sort of musical label and just treat these as songs, songs that are really really well sung and extremely well played.

The EP opens with ‘Cast Aside’. This is going to give you a great idea of the sound the band are going for in their new direction. Yes, it’s got a soulful country blues-y feel to it but it’s not ‘in yer face’ country, it’s just a feel. When I first listened to this I was somewhat strangely reminded of Yazoo, just Yazoo with guitars and wonderfully played horns at one points. And those voices, it’s just a lesson in that you don’t need to over-emote to put across emotions.

Every time I listen to the next track ‘Running Man’ I can’t help but think of it as one of those big AOR ballads. Or perhaps I should say huge ballads. OK so it doesn’t have one of those big searing guitar solos that those generally have but hey it’s just how it sounds to me. Again the words and those vocals tell a story, resisting any temptation to ram it down it down our throats with vocal gymnastics. The playing on this track is rather fabulous, these are these guitar ‘noises’ at one point that just send a shiver down your spine. You want a touchstone, think Fleetword Mac.

And then we come to what is for me the highlight of the EP ‘Give In And Start Again’. This song is huge people. Musically it’s perhaps more country than the previous tracks but by time you get to it, you’re used to the sound and you can just wallow in it. It’s song that deserves a wallow, a darkened room, perhaps a small single malt and just sink into it. It is, as you might have worked out, hugely emotional. Again there are those voices, simple arrangement, acoustic guitar, a lovely horns at points, this really subtle electric guitar run. It resists all temptations to build to something huge and screaming, it could you know. It’s just simple (and yes I know simple is hard, very hard to do properly) and understated, and just fabulously wonderfully lovely.

The final track ‘This Ain’t Your Fight’ is a little more uptempo, fuller in the arrangement but when you listen to the whole EP – and I recommend this – you need that to help you get over ‘Give In And Start Again’. But this ain’t no lightweight it has this great section where the two voices weave in and out and over each other.

OK so you can’t deny the ‘soulful country, blues and Americana’ roots of the songs on this EP – this is undoubtedly going to appeal to fans of that sound – but if you’re not big that that, like me, these songs are going to convert you. It’s the voices, the songs, the arrangements, but mainly those voices that are going to do it. They did it for me.

The EP is available on all digital platforms: http://smarturl.it/Routes

The info

As a pair, they’ve already shared stages with a range of acclaimed singer songwriters including Billie Marten, JP Cooper and the Lost Brothers, as well as experienced playing support to folk legends like Fotheringay, We Banjo 3 and Mozaik to large new crowds. Now with a rehearsed full band lineup at the ready, alongside their tested acoustic guitar and vocal harmony partnership, Waiting For Wednesday are looking to introduce themselves to as many fans of soulful country, blues and Americana as possible in 2018.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Barrence Whitfield And The Savages May 2018 dates

0

From a far out moon beyond the rings of Saturn to a dingy studio in Cincinnati, BARRENCE WHITFIELD AND THE SAVAGES’ new platter embraces a cosmic and groovy unification. It’s a wild, electric phantasmagoria of blues, rock, garage, and soul; it blasts off into diverse orbits only to come back together into a singular Savage cosmology. ‘Soul Flowers of Titan’ is about people shooting guns, separating, coming home (someday), falling in love, running around, leaving this earth, going crazy, drinking coffee, and thinking about Sun Ra.

Titan is the largest moon of Saturn, a planet which astrologically symbolizes pain and struggle. Cincinnati, where the album was recorded (at Ultra Suede Studio), is home to many classic and unknown independent labels, like King and Federal, that fostered a frayed and raucous sound in the 1950s and ‘60s. With such history at their fingertips, the Savages could not resist the urge to celebrate and elaborate on this legacy, to go places high and low, faraway and downhome.

Longtime followers of the Savage Sound will notice right away a heavier sound, a blast of B3 and Rheem organs (courtesy of newest Savage Brian Olive) and a live-in-the-room urgency. It’s a multi-faceted vehicle for a top-notch band wigging out with beefy, staccato blues scales, punk and garage riffs, fronted by a first-order shouter well-heeled in the aesthetics of soul, R&B, and rockabilly.

Barrence’s deep, gravelly rumble anchors muscular struts into madness, out the door and off to Mars. “Slowly Losing My Mind” and “I’m Gonna Leave You Baby” are by Federal alum Willie Wright and his Sparklers, while “Let’s Go To Mars” is an original by Savages guitarist Peter Greenberg and bassist Phil Lenker, written after multiple viewings of an early ‘70s documentary on Sun Ra. Also from the Federal canon is the Midnighters’ “I’ll Be Coming Home Someday,” done here with a somewhat menacing dark street corner doo-wop vibe. “I Can’t Get No Ride,” originally by Finley Brown on the M.O.C. label, will inspire you to Frug off towards a fantastical horizon. And try NOT to flip when the original raunchy rockabilly shuffle “Tall, Black and Bitter” hits the speakers. It’s an album that will take you everywhere and, in doing so, will bring you right back to the center.

‘Soul Flowers of Titan’ is Barrence Whitfield and the Savages’ third LP for Bloodshot Records and fourth since reforming in 2010 after a 25-year hiatus. BW&S shot out of Boston in the mid-’80s with the force of a rocket ship. Through their sweaty dance party shows and love of primal soul, they were to R&B what the Cramps were to rockabilly—a gateway musical drug for nascent underground roots mavens. Along with original Savage Peter Greenberg (The Lyres, DMZ) and Phil Lenker, they released several records on Rounder Records, became a favorite of BBC DJ Andy Kershaw, and won seven Boston Music Awards. After they reunited in the 21st century, adding Andy Jody on drums and Tom Quartulli on sax, they released Savage Kings on Shake It Records and Dig Thy Savage Soul and Under the Savage Sky on Bloodshot.

Tour News: THE LIMIÑANAS tour May 2018

0

French psych duo THE LIMIÑANAS have announced their return to the UK with a tour in May,

Tue 01 May – Soup Kitchen – Manchester
Wed 02 May – The Cluny 2 – Newcastle
Thurs 03 May – Broadcast – Glasgow
Fri 04 May – Brudenel – Leeds
Sat 05 May – The Garage – London
Sun 06 May – The Hope – Brighton

The Limiñanas have also shared the video for ‘Dimanche’, taken from their recently released new album. The video features French chanteur Bertrand Belin, who also provides vocals on the song, and actress Emmanuelle Seigner, who sings on the album’s title track ‘Shadow People’. Also present is Foulke de Boixo, the dancing hero from the album’s previous videos.

The Limiñanas are Marie (drums/vocals) and Lionel (guitar, bass, keyboards and vocals). Hailing from Perpignan, the duo straddles the boundary between psych, shoegaze, and yé-yé. With hazy, reverb-laden hooks, combined at times with noisy distortion, and fronted by effortlessly cool vocals, reminiscent of Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot, the band is at once timeless and quintessentially French.

“What was old is new again”… The old adage is so tired that nobody takes its proper measure: all people hear is the word “old”, when the important one is “new”. Making new things out of old things is an act of alchemy. It’s very complicated. You take rusted lead and transform it into sparkling gold… The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The Standells, Chocolate Watchband, Billy Childish and other garage heroes; Ennio Morricone, John Barry and 1960’s Italian songs; Can, Neu! and all the Teutonic knights of motoric groove; The Cramps, of course, Nick Cave, Gainsbourg and tonic psych rock: Lionel and Marie from the Limiñanas know them all by heart, they worship them. They drink from that well and, after a good kneading and pounding, they make something else out of it. “We don’t do revivalism”, states Lionel from behind his beard. “In fact, some purists are accusing us of selling out, which is a good sign”.

New album ‘Shadow People’ was recorded and produced at The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe’s studio in Berlin.

BAND NEWS: Goodbye from TRASH

0

TRASH have released 3 new songs as part of the announcement of their decision to split. ‘Bored’, ‘All I’ve Got To Do Is Forget You’ and ‘While You’re Mine’ are available on all streaming sites now.

Spotify: http://hyperurl.co/TRASHBoredSpotify
iTunes: http://hyperurl.co/TRASHBoredAppleMusic
Soundcloud: http://hyperurl.co/TRASHBoredSoundcloud

In a statement on their site they explained

“On May 24th 2014 we played our first concert as TRASH. On December 9th 2017 we played our last concert as TRASH. In between those dates we played other concerts as TRASH. It’s been a decent 4 years tbh (to be honest), tbf (to be fair), ngl (not gonna lie), imo (in my opinion) etc etc. Thanks Scott and Clue Records for giving us something to do, something to keep us off the streets and out of trouble. Thanks to everyone. If you’ve never heard of us you might stumble across the hits in a few years time. Anyway, I’m rambling.

Right then, cya in another life maybe.

TRASH, out.”

Dan explained a little more about his feelings on why the band is stopping:

“Being good at doing things has never really interested me. I don’t really care as long as I enjoy what I’m doing. For example, I always lose on FIFA but I can’t stop playing it. I cook for my family but never expect approval or feedback. It’s just something I find therapeutic.

The same goes for music. Whenever people used to ask me about TRASH I’d end the conversation the same way every time. “I enjoy doing it and that’s what’s important”. And then I stopped enjoying it and that was hard to come to terms with.

But life’s too short to continue with things you don’t enjoy. If your job gets shit you should probably get out. If your relationship gets shit you should probably get out. If being in a band gets shit, and if you lose direction or purpose, and if having to compete in the dark and destructive world that is the music industry forces you into a depression, you should probably get out.

Don’t stay in it because you feel like you have to. Don’t do it to meet the expectations of others. Be selfish and start living for you. Do it if you enjoy it and don’t do it if you don’t.

We spent four years trying to create something authentic and honest, but there comes a point when you feel like you’ve given all you have to give.”

The 3 tracks were produced by Alex Greaves from Forever Cult at Nave Studios, with ‘Bored’ mixed by James from Indoor Pets. They have been released via Clue Records.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Mallory Knox release ‘Black Holes’, dates April to July 2018

0

Mallory Knox have released their first single as a four-piece, following the news that vocalist Mikey Chapman had departed the band last week. ‘Black Holes’ sees bassist Sam Douglas step up to vocal duties. He says in relation to ‘Black Holes’: “ I think it shows a completely different side to my voice. In taking on lead vocals, that was something I wanted to be able to show from the get go. It’s a song we’ve played at rehearsal for a while and we’re all really excited about integrating it into the set.

Continuing to speak on the lyrics, Douglas says “It’s all too easy in this day and age to post every single thought we have online, and at times too much can be said. Everybody seems to be so quick to have an opinion on something, which they often know nothing about, and I struggle to defend how much negativity is spouted online. We really wanted to make sure that emotion was captured in the recording and our producer Adrian Bushby really brought out the bare bones of the song in the best way. It’s a conscious effort to go back to basics. We really want the listener to be able to hear every part being played and I feel we’ve achieved that.”

‘Black Holes’ received its first airplay on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 Show last night and Mallory Knox are all set to take their revamped line-up on the road for a clutch of headline dates in April, as well as festival appearances at Selby Pop Punk Pile-Up and Camden Rocks.

VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: Movements share new video ‘Deadly Dull’, first ever UK headline tour to start April/May 2018

0

“I want people to understand that Alzheimer’s is more than the misconceptions. My own hope is that we will one day find a cure or effective treatment. It’s very possible that any one of us can lose every sense of the person we are to this disease. We are all susceptible to becoming a shell of the person we used to be, all of our collective years of memories of love … gone. It’s a scary thought, but we can do something about it.” – Patrick Miranda, Movements

California’s MOVEMENTS have partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association to debut an emotionally charged video for ‘Deadly Dull’, a fan favourite from their latest album ‘Feel Something’. Directed by Max Moore, the video depicts a vivid representation of effects of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

“’Deadly Dull’ is a song that we felt really needed a visual aid,” says lead singer-songwriter Patrick Miranda. “The song is powerful as it is, but adding a video really helps drive the point home and make the situation more understandable. Seeing someone you love suffer from a disease that rids them of who they are is a really hard thing to experience. We felt that director Max Moore would do a perfect job of taking this song to the next level, and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome.”

MOVEMENTS also recently announced that they will touring the UK and parts of Europe this April and May in support of their debut album “Feel Something”. The dates span the length of the UK including stops in Brighton, Glasgow, Cardiff, and London with support from Paerish & Muskets, where they then go on to Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, and Antwerp.

MOVEMENTS will also be touring the US with Can’t Swim, Super Whatevr, and Gleemer this March and have previously supported the likes of Knuckle Puck in the US in December with Tiny Moving Parts and Have Mercy in tow.
