FESTIVAL NEWS: LIFE top line-up of more than 200 bands at Humber Street Sesh 5th August 2017

Headlining the festival and fresh from a storming performance at Radio One’s Big Weekend and SXSW is Hull’s own politically charged punk noisemakers band LIFE. Other Hull exports include Jack Conman, a rising star on the UK music scene known for his acoustic guitar and soulful melodies, indie quartet Fronteers and one of the biggest selling and hottest emerging guitar bands across the country right now, King No-One.

The festival which captures the heart and soul of the city, features a line up of 200 bands performing on 20 stages, spread out around Hull Marina. The Sesh, founded by Mark Page, has always given a platform for local bands and artists, but in this Hull 2017 City of Culture year is branching out to welcome bands from across the UK, giving them the opportunity to play to crowds numbering up to 30,000.

Artists coming in from from across the UK include Kagoule (Nottingham), Post War Glamour Girls (Leeds), Indigo Velvet (Edinburgh), Black Waters (Surry), Fatherson (Glasgow), Strange Bones (Blackpool), Polo (York) and Kid Trench (Newry, Northern Ireland).

Also performing are La Bete Blooms, Vulgarians, Counting Coins, Endoflevelbaddie, Fonda 500, Black Delta Movement and DJ James Orvis who recently performed at John Grant’s North Atlantic Flux, and Revenu who appeared as part of The Basil Kirchin Story.

The Hubbards, Chiedu Oraka, Bud Sugar, Chiedu Oraka and Emily Moulton who are also set to perform at The Sesh, will take to the stage before the August Festival as part of All We Ever Wanted Was Everything an anarchic theatrical epic which mixes bold new writing by Luke Barnes with original live music from James Frewer. The piece from award-winning Hull theatre company Middle Child opens at The Welly Club on Tuesday 6 June and runs until Saturday 17 June.

The man responsible for this spectacular evolution is Sesh founder Mark Page.

“In the last five years, we’ve captivated the heart and soul of the city, provided a powerful platform for the best emerging bands and acts from the region and helped create a sense of cultural wellbeing in Hull.

“This year, in line with Hull 2017, we have invited some special friends to join us as we showcase the brilliance of our City of Culture. This is our year in the spotlight, and Humber Street Sesh will truly shine this August.”

LIFE frontman Mez Green who holds the festival close to his heart said: “It’s an honour to headline what we consider the most exciting and vital Hull event.

“The Sesh isn’t just a celebration of music but it’s a celebration of the diverse and powerful community we have in our city of culture! We can’t wait.”

With music and community at the heart of the festival, they’ll also be an engaging arts programme featuring street art, graffiti, photo exhibitions and installations.

There will also be a designated family area with a youth stage, skate park, kids scrapstore and face painting with under-12s invited along for free.

Also on site among celebrated street food stalls and markets, there will be a funfair, silent disco and a 50’s & 60’s funk & soul vinyl experience courtesy of Original Brew.

Humber Street Sesh is in its sixth year after growing from a weekly music night in Hull to one of the country’s most unique and exciting festivals.

Such is its growing reputation, Humber Street Sesh was shortlisted in the Best Medium Sized Festival and the Best Metropolitan Festival categories at the high-profile UK Festival Awards last year.

ALBUM REVIEW: King Of The Slums – ‘Manco Diablo’

It was with a great deal of excitement that I got the email asking LSF whether we’d like to review King Of The Slums’ new album. Having fond memories of the band in the late 80s I said yes immediately.

So if you, like me to be honest, haven’t been keeping up and didn’t realise they’d released something in 2009, the question you’re going to be asking is ‘Do they sound like they used to?’. The answer to this, at least to my ears, is yes and no. There’s still the bite in the music and words, but it’s tighter. The post-punk element has been replaced to some extent by a dub element. And crucially there is no violin.

So this leaves me with a dilemma, do I review this ‘through the lens’ of their 80s material or treat this as a completely different thing? After some thought I decided to review this an album in it’s own right.

That said, let’s get down to it – this isn’t a track by track by the way. And don’t think just because I’ve not mentioned the other tracks that they are just not good, they are, they’re great. It’s just that these are my highlights.

‘Church Bells Over England’ draws us in with a dubby slow intro and then it explodes. This is great stuff. It reminds me to a degree of Here & Now circa 83/84 but this is no bad thing. In fact for me it is a great thing. It’s not the same but it has that vibe, the spacey guitar, the bass prominent. The echo in the vocals in the intro. And here I must introduce the issue of the words. The words here are important – as they are in all the songs. They are good but for the purpose of the review I wasn’t able to study them, let their meaning seep into my head. That’s going to take time.

There’s vaguely eastern sounding intro to ‘Punting In Oxbridge’ but this morphs into a choppy, rocky, sort of punky sounding thing. It swirls, it growls. It frankly kicks arse. Boy, can these guys play. Lyrically what we have here is great commentary on class and politics.

‘Red Canal Witness’ brings back that dubby sounding vibe. Spacey guitar. The spacey bits are separated by sections which sound a bit like Motorhead playing dub. This may sound like a criticism, it isn’t you’ll love that heavy bit coming in. It works. But listen to the words and suddenly this is the saddest thing.

‘You were standing there, over, dirty green water.
I don’t know why you did what you did, or the trouble, that was in your head.
Some are fickle, and some run deep, some don’t last so long, some go on and on, too long,
Your arms held out, going up and down, kinda dancing, but not dancing, now your yellow hair and pale blue dress is floating, is floating, floating…’

Now the dark is creeping in, ‘Dark Web Groomer’ is menacing. It contrasts the days when children ‘played out’ and could run away from danger, and now when they go on the web, approached by faceless strangers -’He’s 53, not 15, chatting to, someone he shouldn’t’.

I am not entirely sure what to make of ‘Crooked Flowers’. It takes a long while to reach the words. It sort of noodles along with some spoken bits, guitar and synth until the vocals come in. The noodling is great but I can’t help feeling it goes on slightly too long. The problem is that I just know that by say the third time I listen to the album it’ll be one of my favourite tracks.

UPDATE: Having listened to this track a second time, I’ve changed my mind, the intro isn’t too long, it’s just a tease for the rest of the song. It’s worth waiting for that.

Once you get the body of the song what you get is great, it’s fast, it’s choppy, it’s about terrorism (I think). The actual title is ‘Crooked Flowers (Reportage)’ so I’m guessing that it was written in response to the recent terror attacks, it’s a commentary.

We are back with the slow with ‘Toxic Skip Rat’. It’s one part spacerock, one part Sabbath. A guitar that rings out over this. Although it’s another of my favourites I didn’t have the slightest idea what the song was about until I noticed that the lyric sheet actually tells you it’s about when depression and insomnia come to visit you. Having seen this it all snaps into focus.

‘Lost In Translation’ – I thought for ages quite how to describe this, discarded much of the things I came up with. It’s sort of Japanese sounding in places, in others it sounds a bit like ‘Kashmir’ played by a punk band. It builds and it it builds until it just stops. I am, and I’m sorry, making this sound like a mess, it isn’t. It is brilliant. It is fabulous. I hit repeat way too many times on this track.. This is the standout of the album for me.

‘Fast Spinning Chandelier’ is just the weirdest thing, it caught me completely by surprise. It’s almost folky but spacey (spacefolk anyone?). I found myself quite moved by this.

What we have here is a fantastic collection of songs. Musically it’s immediate, these are great from the first listen. Lyrically they are thought provoking, emotional and incredibly well written. Ticks all the right boxes for me, I recommend it.

William The Conqueror premiered a new video for their single ‘Tend To The Thorns’ via FOLKRADIO before they release their debut ‘Proud Disturber Of The Peace’ on 4 August via Loose.

Ruarri Joseph stated that the video, “tries to strike at the contrast between the innocence of youth, simple wide open spaces and imagination vs. the inevitable claustrophobia of what happens as you grow up, getting boxed in and the clarity muddied. Would it be believed if I said the kid is actual 8mm footage of me as a kid? ”

William The Conqueror features Ruarri Joseph, a former folk singer-songwriter who walked away from a major record label deal with Atlantic Records to explore the music he wanted to make – which took an rock direction after he felt boxed in by Atlantic’s vision for his music. Joseph stated, “I think Atlantic wanted to box me in as something I wasn’t but I didn’t know what I was either so it made sense to leave and just get out on the road, see if I could figure it out. I spent a lot of time on the folk circuit just by virtue of the fact I had a beard and an acoustic guitar, it paid the bills but again didn’t feel like I was following my creative instincts as opposed to trying to get by. I reached a point where I thought my younger self that had cut his teeth in punk and rock bands would’ve been disappointed in what I’d become so William started as a way to pay homage to that youth that got side lined when life got in the way.”

Hailing from the North coast of Cornwall, the band also features multi-instrumentalists Harry Harding and Naomi Holmes – their debut album charges through ten raw tracks, asserting itself with opener In My Dreams, a song about destiny, disappointment and defiance; driving drums and heart racing bass setting the tone. Other standouts include the confessional and timeless Pedestals, the mysteriously triumphant Cold Ontario and epic future single Tend To The Thorns with its earworm guitar hooks, blistering drums and ethereal harmonies.

ALBUM NEWS: Merch Table release ‘The Merch Table – Compilation VI’

The Merch Table hear lots of great music from unsigned bands and thought it would be a good idea to put a digital compilation together – sell it cheap, give every band a cut of every sale. The songs were chosen from submissions which came from posting ads on social media and also from some artists already selling products on their website.

They say ‘It features a mix of genre’s which posed a challenge in itself. It’s quite tricky getting an album to flow when there are so many styles of music. In fact, one of the things we have decided is that if we can get enough submissions we will do more genre specific releases’.

Having had a seek preview of the compilation my particular favourites are The Heavens ‘If You’re Lost For Somewhere Else To Be’- a really fab slice of psych pop, The Village ‘For I Am So Old, And I Have Seen The Sky’ – quirky and strange in a really great way and The Lost 45’s ‘Ivy’ – a driving piece of garage rock. But there’s nothing here that is filler and the other tracks are definitely worth the absurdly low price. Buy it, and support local unsigned bands.

About The Merch Table

The Merch Table idea is nothing new, they create a space for bands to sell merchandise, CD’s and digital downloads. The thing they do differently is to keep it personal.

Most of the work is done by one man, Danny Whittingham, who has been around the unsigned/new music scene since the nineties. Starting as guitarist with Leeds band Barfly and then joining Bradford based Adorned, Danny now plays bass with Brighouse songwriter Roger Davies. He knows that making merchandise available away from gigs is expensive and, bluntly, a bit of a pain.

They keep their costs to a minimum and only take a small percentage of the sale. The artist takes on average 88% of the sale price. Their enjoyment comes from seeing new music getting out to the public and slowly building up a catalogue on the website.

Artists can create their own accounts and add products as they require, or they can simply email them and they’ll do the work.

TOUR NEWS: Slurs announce first UK tour

Slurs will be embarking on a short tour of the UK in August 2017. Following on from the release of their well received second EP ‘Badmouth’ last year, Slurs will be debuting new material ready for their next release. The trio will be taking in Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham, Sheffield and Glasgow over the course of the summer.

Their self-released first EP ‘Northern Electric’ was described by NARC as “six punchy pop gems incorporating elements of Britpop, slacker rock and shoegaze “, while when discussing Badmouth, God is in the TV said “the trio harness a vital sound that embraces the fuzziness of shoegaze while also injecting some of the angst-ridden nature of post-punk and the best hooks of Britpop, wrapped in a charmingly DIY aesthetic”. Their sound is influenced by a great range of music and culture, from early shoegaze and Britpop bands to current affairs and the distinct North East identity.

Slurs are Newcastle trio Mark Simpson, Mike Smith and Fintan Dawson.

Taken from ‘Mirrors’, which was produced by Luuk Cox at ICP Studios in Brussels and mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios in London, ‘Time To Get It Over With’ was co-written with Gill Landry (ex-Old Crow Medicine Show) after he’d played a gig in Cattle & Cane’s hometown of Middlesbrough last year.

“We loved Gill’s set so much that we invited him back to our practice room after his show!” explains Helen. “We stayed up all night playing music together, sharing tour stories and drinking a lot of English Breakfast Tea, and the result was Time To Get It Over With” added Joe.

2017 has been a pretty exciting year for Cattle & Cane, with Elton John declaring his love for album opener ‘Love On Your Hands‘ on Beats 1 and ‘7 Hours’ picking up numerous radio-plays from long time champion Dermot O’Leary, who previously showcased the band on his ‘Saturday Sessions’ compilation following a live session on BBC Radio 2. ‘7 Hours’ also passed the 1 million streams milestone on Spotify in under 6 months, while ‘Fool For You’ picked up coverage from Sunday Brunch, Made In Chelsea and The Only Way Is Essex. Furthermore, the video was also playlisted by BT TV and earned the band a live session on Vintage TV.

With extensive support from BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 6 Music and Amazing Radio, Cattle & Cane have been heavily championed by the BBC Introducing team and previously performed on their stages at T In The Park and BBC Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park. They’ve also appeared at acclaimed tastemaker events such as Reeperbahn Festival, Live At Leeds and Evolution Emerging, as well as at some of the UK’s finest boutique festivals including Cornbury, Deer Shed, Twisterella, Stockton Calling and Bingley Music Live.

Wildwood Kin, a family trio formed in Exeter, borrow heavily from early folk influences, but their extraordinary debut album delves deeply in to other genres, featuring both electric and acoustic instruments. It boasts inventive sonics and spectral atmospherics alongside their sublime three-part harmonies.

Guitarist Emillie Key, her bouzouki/keyboard-playing sister Beth and their drumming cousin Meghann Loney all sing, swapping leads on original songs, and joining forces on harmonies that have become their trademark, inviting comparisons with the likes of Haim, Crosby, Stills and Nash and Fleetwood Mac.

Being tipped by the likes of Jo Whiley, Mark Radcliffe, Steve Wright, Bob Harris and Jamie Cullum and having previously toured with Seth Lakeman and Ward Thomas, the band are set for a UK headline tour this autumn. Before that the girls will play a slot at BBC Radio 2’s ‘Festival in A Day’ in Hyde Park on September 10th.

SINGLE REVIEW: The Seamonsters – ‘Wonderland’

I’ve been sitting on this for a while now, and it’s become a real fav up here in LSF towers.

Starts off a bit punky, a bit indie, a little bit poppy. And then it’s all jangly guitar and off-kilter drum rhythms, with those vocals that sort of sound like they don’t fit but do fit, they fit really well. And it’s bouncy, it’s going to bring a smile to your face.

And then there’s what happens about two minutes into the track, it builds and then it’s just vocals and guitar, and then it builds again. Only it’s more raw than before. This is the thing that makes the track for me. It already had me, but this sealed the deal.

OK so for those of you that fell for ‘Lost (And Found)’ this is a slightly different side of The Seamonsters. It’s rawer, more – dare I say it – rocky. It doesn’t have keyboards (I’ve listened lots but can’t hear any, I may be wrong) but it still has that trademark Seamonsters’ glitter – it’s in that bit two minutes in, in Naomi’s vocals, it’s in those layers of sound you can hear if you listen carefully.

Actually do listen carefully because there’s a hell of lot going on in this. It may sound loose but that sound comes from lots of things all working together fabulously.

And yes, I’ve got to admit that this took me back to the jangly guitar bands of the 80s – it’s got that sound – BUT The Seamonsters bring their own thing, so it’s bang up to date as well.

Favourite things – that guitar riff that runs through the track, Naomi’s vocal phrasing early on, the backing vocals and let’s not forget the drumming, it’s holding it all together.

The festival will be held on 5th and 6th August in Liverpool. The complete line-up across all three stages has now been revealed with some special new additions including Liverpool’s very own Space, plus Rale, Rich Ayre, We Are Catchers and the ferocious Sex Pissed Dolls, who will have the legendary Tony Christie guesting with them for a special rendition of ‘Amarillo’.

They will be joining the festival’s incredible line-up of top name acts – including headliners JAMES and HAÇIENDA ÇLASSICAL, Razorlight, Ocean Colour Scene, The Fratellis, Charlotte Church’s Late Night Pop Dungeon, The Lightning Seeds and more, plus some of the most exciting up and coming talent such as the Blinders, The Shimmer Band and Zak Abel. Anthems loaded Embrace will also perform at HOPE & GLORY having just supported Coldplay, playing to 65,000 people a night at their recent stadium shows.

Also featuring on Saturday at the ‘In The Lady Garden Stage’ will be Charlotte Church and Lucy Spraggan ‘In Conversation With’ respected journalist and author Simon Price, as well as Liverpool’s International Air Guitar Competition, which will be taking place throughout the day, with entrants battling it out to show their best moves to the crowd. On Sunday there will be exclusive acoustic performances from ex-Augustines frontman William McCarthy, who makes his return to Liverpool after his former band played their final show in the city last year, as well as The Voice UK 2016 contestant Cody Frost and an appearance from the grand ‘Duelling Pianos’ who will take to the stage in a thrilling contest between virtuoso ivory ticklers in a life or death struggle to showcase their skills!

Ticket buyers can also get involved in the festival’s Victoriana fancy dress competition, with one lucky winner walking away with £1,000 and two tickets to next year’s HOPE & GLORY, so expect handle-bar moustaches, bearded ladies and bloomers galore!

There will be numerous more weird and wonderful things happening across the site, including pop up comedians, a Football Legends charity darts match, celebrity arm wrestling, The Victorian Acrobatic Team, Harminder the Elephant and Dinosaur Baby in the Pram and Lord Of The Lobsters, as well as a Foam Party, Prince Albert’s Little Secret (cocktail bar), Mothers Ruin (gin bar), Mr Edison’s Electric Emporium, Dr Johnson’s Clandestine Gathering, The Hoop & Stick and Darwin’s Little Darlings.
