SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Ian Hunter & The Rant Band announce new single ‘Ghosts’ plus June/July UK tour dates

0

Following on from last year’s fond tribute to David Bowie, ‘Dandy,’ Ian Hunter releases a second cut from his widely acclaimed new solo album, ‘Fingers Crossed.’ A vivacious stomper, recorded at HOBO Studios in New Jersey, and co-produced by Hunter and Andy York, ‘Ghosts’ was inspired by a 2014 visit to Union Avenue in Memphis where Ian and the Rant Band were invited to jam in rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Sam Phillips’ legendary Sun Studio.

“I’m like some kid in a candy store – always been a fan
It’s all still here – the atmosphere – it’s where it all began”

As leader of ‘70s British rock legends Mott the Hoople and as a hugely influential solo artist, Ian Hunter is widely revered as one of rock’n’roll’s most compelling performers and one of its most articulate songwriters. As author of such immortal anthems as, “All The Way From Memphis”, “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” and “Cleveland Rocks” and the voice of such landmark albums as, “All The Young Dudes”, “Mott”, “Ian Hunter” and “You’re Never Alone With A Schizophrenic”, he remains a hero to fellow musicians and fans around the world.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: York Metalcorers INVISIONS Announce debut album ‘Never Nothing’ to be released 18th August tour dates June/July 2017

0

“Purge was actually the last song we recorded for the album. We were right at the end of the recording process when we wrote it, so it almost never even happened. It’s about feeling numb to the everyday things that are happening around you and needing to find a way to release yourself from the emotional void. In this case, causing extreme pain to another just to try and feel something yourself” Lucas Gabb, Guitars

‘Purge’ follows previous single ‘Turn Up’, which premiered with Rock Sound and saw spins from Kerrang! Radio.

Debut album ‘Never Nothing’ was produced by brothers Sam and Joe Graves of York’s InnerSound Studios (Asking Alexandria, Deaf Havana, Eyes Set To Kill). Encompassing Purge, the title stems from the tendency to keep up appearances, and hide inner demons.

“‘Never Nothing’ is a theme that is lyrically consistent across the album. Almost every song relates to how everybody hides behind a front but actually there’s so much more going on. People in today’s society love to pretend that they’re immune to any extreme of emotion when in reality that is never the case.” Alex Scott, Guitars

SINGLE REVIEW: Duncan Reed – ‘Hypnotise’

0

Built around simple acoustic guitar figures ‘Hypnotise’ is … hard to pigeonhole. Is it a modern folk-based song? Well yes, there’s a folky feel there. Is it a big rock ballad? Well it has that going on as well (to a degree). You can almost imagine it as the first encore for a rock band – you know the sort of thing I mean.

It’s a grower. At first I wasn’t grabbed by this but after a few moments I found myself being drawn in, it’s something that crept up on me. By the time I hit the almost Clannad like layered vocal swell it had got me. The build in this song is going to – if you forgive me – hypnotise you. It just gradually builds up on you, and then you’re in this big rock ballad for a few moments, and the it stars to fade. Lovely.

Duncans’s vocal is understated, he lets the words – which are great by the way – do the talking. The production is fabulous, he’s resisted the temptation to layer on lots of stuff.

If you like a great song, well sung and very well played then you’ll love this.

‘Hypnotise’ is the title track from Duncan’s upcoming album of the same name.

While I was on Bandcamp checking out this track, I couldn’t resist checking out Duncan’s other material. There’s some great stuff there, and I’d recommend you do the same.

Hard As Stone – https://youtu.be/mMuQjue4m3I

Duncan says “I began my musical life at a very young age making what were probably fairly appalling sounds on one of the many guitars within the family home. I was born into a musical family and regularly played guitar throughout my childhood. As most children do, I learnt recorder during primary school and performed with the school orchestra and recorder group, winning awards in regional competitions. Most of my musical theory knowledge dates from this period.

“I formed my first band with school friends aged around 9 and would play “gigs” at birthday parties and practice each week at my friend’s house. Being honest, most of the band members were involved because they owned instruments rather than for their musical prowess but looking back, I am quite proud that we wrote our own songs from such a young age. We even included a few covers by Radiohead and U2 in our set, although these would only be performed by me and the singer (who is still making music today).

“As I grew up during the height of Britpop my original influences from a young age included bands such as Kula Shaker and Radiohead, along with more folkier sounds from bands like The Levellers. Throughout my teenage years, I veered more and more to alternative music and metal with my heaviest influences ranging from Muse and My Vitriol to Iron Maiden, Pantera and Alice In Chains! So it’s hardly surprising that I spent a number of years as a singer for a metal band until my early 20’s.

2It was not until my early 20’s that I began to record properly, and the release of ‘Until The End’ in September 2012 was the start of my solo career. The album itself is almost a summary of my early life in songwriting and spans a variety of stages in my development. It is definitely an interesting piece to listen to, either to enjoy as a piece of work to be proud of or just to look back on with a sense of satisfaction. ‘The Hardest Path’ EP, released in 2014, was based heavily around open guitar tunings and acoustic instruments and has more of an acoustic/folk edge to it. In the final track ‘Coming Back To Life’, dual lead vocals were introduced to my overall sound.

“Since then, I have been working on two separate projects. The follow up to ‘The Hardest Path’ was supposed to be the ‘Coming Home’ EP but sadly, due to unforeseen circumstances, the project was placed on hold. The main body of the songs were all performed live and the EP really builds on the idea of dual lead vocals and sweeping harmonies

“My latest project has been the production of ‘Hypnotise’ which nicely summarises my musical influences. It introduces elements of a full band production while at times still maintaining a folky acoustic edge.”

The gig

John Reed & Friends: An evening of original folk music combining folk, a bit of rock, and some sounds from across the pond from Nova Scotia.
25th May 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Todmorden Unitarian Church

John will kicking off this gig with long time friend and guitarist Kieran Heaney, delivering around 40 minutes of cittern based original folk songs from his Moorscape album and and Dry The Life EP, with a smattering of progressive folk for good measure.

John’s gig will be followed by his son Duncan who has actually been on the gig circuit for longer than himself. Duncan’s voice is amazing and the quality of his songs shines through on his soon to be released album Hypnotise.

To round off the evening friends The Lewinskies (husband and wife team Kristen Hatt-Lewis and Matthew Lewis) from Nova Scotia, whose North-East American folk vibe combines thoughtful and direct lyrics with Kristen’s accordion playing.

SINGLE REVIEW: John Reed – ‘The Burning Gates Of Hell’

0

‘The Burning Gates of Hell’ is the first single from John’s double album of protest songs ‘The Breeding Ground Of Vile’ John told us that ‘it was brought forward after May announced the election in an attempt to get people from behind their computers to protest properly about the direction in which this government is taking us’.

Musically it’s punky folk or possibly even folky punk, you know what I mean. But the words and the vocal performance are angry, very angry. It’s rousing, it’s a protest song in the true sense of the word.

Obviously this isn’t going to be for everyone. If you don’t agree with John’s political stance then I can’t see you liking it. If you do then listen, listen carefully, the words are important in this song.

It is a rallying call for us all to get out from behind our computers and phones and go out there and demonstrate. Clicktivism, the song argues, is no substitute for getting out on the streets. And John puts this in historical context right at the start of the track, telling us that the suffragettes wouldn’t have got what they wanted without physically protesting. Coming as I do from a generation who did get out there (I’ve lost count of the number of demonstrations I went on in my late teens and early/mid twenties), who did stand up and be counted I can only agree.

I’m a fan of John’s music and this isn’t changing that. I like a protest song and this is right up there, and right up to date.

See you on the street.

ALBUM REVIEW: WildCohen – ‘BloochyKoo’

0

If you read my feature on WildCohen you’ll recall that I promised an album review. This has taken an age to do because this album is a huge, a huge sprawling multi-layered piece of psychedelic blissed out loveliness. Every track is going to take you on journey. It’s taken me a while to get my head around it all.

Let’s get the basics out of the way first, the playing and production on this album is great. There’s a lot going on but it’s all there for your ears to absorb. And what is fantastic is that every time you listen to any of the tracks you’re going to hear something you hadn’t picked out before. I love that.

You’ll want to sit down and listen this thing as whole, it’s that sort of album. The band describe it as a concept album ‘about the spiritual mother of all universes’, and concept albums are designed to be listened in one hit, yeah? So come with me and we’ll wander through the album. You may, as I have done, want to double back and listen to a track again but that’s all good.

The album opens with ‘Happy Times’, and for those of you expecting some sort of psych sounding band, it may come as a surprise. What we have here is something a little bit country. It’s a little bit loose, it’s a great slow groove. You may think you have a handle on this band now …

… But you don’t. ‘Blue Blue’ is well, it’s one part glam, one part blues. It’s like a slowed down T-Rex riff or something out of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. There is some great guitar on this track. And bizarrely, but entirely right, there’s what sounds like a steel pan at one point. It is, to be honest, sleazy.

Up next ‘Leave The Light On’, one of my favourite tracks. It is an acoustic driven ballad, lovely layered voices. I am taken back to the 70s by this track, it has that feel. It even has a saxophone or what sounds like a saxophone anyway. And that guitar sound. This is huge, it builds and builds. And the fade, well you’ll just have to hear it.

We are on a journey, we have turned a corner and what we are hearing changes. ‘Jackson’s Son’ is like nothing we’ve heard before. It’s like some strange rave track, there’s a hint of Deelite in there. It has the most delicious groove, you’ll want to get up and dance. ‘Animals’ continues in this groove but it has this psychedelic pop sound. I had one of those far out and freaky 60s’ promo films in my head at this point.

The album title track ‘BloochyKoo’ is, well, strange. It may start out sounding fairly – for WildCohen anyway – straightforward but it gradually gets more and more warped, and then not so warped. ‘Bluebird’ reminds me of nothing less than than an early Pink Floyd track, it has that vocal style, the halting melody. This isn’t copyism though, it’s a style. Another of my favourites.

‘Crystal Steven’ is huge, it’s vastly layered. It’s a trip, a soundscape.

Not a band to stick to one style for long ‘We Are The Stars’ goes all 70s disco. It has those freaky disco sounds, weird vocal effects, and adds to this a rather – if you’ll forgive this – tasty guitar. Lovely. ‘Light Of The World’ is well, hard to describe. It sort of continues the 70s vibe of ‘We Are The Stars’ but more so. It sounds like one of those slower numbers I used to hate at school discos in the actual 70s but in a warped way.

‘Sing For The World’ is rather lovely, it’s sensitive, the vocals are great, there’s some rather fab guitar and … a ringing phone.

We are nearly at the end of our trip now, there is just one more track ‘Rainbow’ – another one of my favourites. It’s, at its heart, a simple song but there are layers of vocals and sounds going on. It’s one for those days when you need something to chill out to.

Listening to this album is like walking through WildCohen’s collective heads – they have taken a whole bunch of stuff and made it into something that is very very much their own. And the fact that there are so many different styles of music – although it very definitely hangs together, it doesn’t feel disjointed – on the album is only a good thing. The music on this album seeps into into your mind, it sweeps you up in waves of sound, and leaves you wanting more.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: OMD ‘The Punishment of Luxury’ new album released 1st September, 18 date UK & Eire tour

0

Synth-pop pioneers OMD return with their dazzling 13th studio album ‘The Punishment of Luxury’ which sees them combine the wistful nostalgia and idealised romance of their previous work while stepping out of their comfort zone. The LP is out September 1st on 100% Records.

The follow up to the critically acclaimed ‘English Electric’ (released in 2013) ‘The Punishment Of Luxury’ is a daring collection of stylish synth pop and masterful songwriting which will certainly rank alongside their very best.

Written, recorded, produced and mixed by OMD – Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys – the album is the sound of a band in their prime. ‘On this album we have managed to make beautiful things out of noises and repetitive patterns’, explains Andy. ‘The trouble is, we just cant help but write a catchy melody!’

The album takes its name from an 1891 painting by the Italian Giovani Segantini and contains everything from the Kraftwerkian ‘Isotype’ and ‘Robot Man’ to the blue eyed soul ballads of ‘One More Time’ and ‘The View From Here’ as well as more traditional OMD songs like ‘Kiss Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Bang’ and the synth heavy title track.

Described by The Quietus as “not just one of the best synth bands ever – they are one of the best bands ever”, OMD’s influence has become ubiquitous. The xx, the Killers and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy have cited OMD as an inspiration, and the likes of Future Islands and Chvrches show traces of OMD’s DNA.

Having played a triumphant sold out show at the Royal Albert Hall in May last year, OMD head back out on the road again this autumn for a string of must-see shows, including a show at The Roundhouse November 13th.

VIDEO NEWS: Fizzy Blood drop new video for ‘Pawn’

0

“The video for ‘Pawn’ shot on VHS and was made to emulate the style of those horrible 80’s PSA videos. I like the way that kind of corny, un-self-aware, salesmen like attitude parodies the attitudes within the mainstream music industry even today and hopefully that comes across when people watch it. It was shot within a day in an art studio in Leeds and a lot of our mates came down, dressed up and got involved in the making of the video so we had a lot of fun making it.” – Paul Howells, Guitars

‘Pawn’ has seen spins from BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, and was recently featured as track of the week on Kerrang! Radio.

Explosive and guttural, the band are aptly named and causing a stir. Releasing their colossal debut EP ‘Feast’ in 2015, widespread praise for the record fuelled a formidable live run, highlights including shows alongside Allusondrugs, The Virginmarys, Max Raptor and The Dead Kennedys.

2017 is shaping up to be Fizzy Blood’s biggest year yet. The band made their second appearance at SXSW, which was followed by the aforementioned 19-date run with While She Sleeps. they will kick off a hefty festival schedule, which will include The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City, Camden Rocks, Download, 2000 Trees and Tramlines – with more to be announced soon.

The band are putting the final touches on their next release which is due later this year on Killing Moon & Alya Records, further details to be announced soon.

SHOW NEWS: Musical comedians Johnny and the Baptists come to The Civic Barnsley, 26th May

“The political edge of 80s alternative comedy – a pop-soul voice to win X Factor” – Observer

A riotous and heartfelt musical comedy for our times, JONNY & THE BAPTISTS’ Edinburgh Fringe hit EAT THE POOR is playing to a growing national audiences from recent acclaimed shows and broadcast appearances on Radio 4’s The Now Show and the BBC’s Live at Television Centre. This comedy is more relevant than ever in our political times.

The show combines contemporary satire and inventive musical silliness with an epic personal story. Setting out to explore the gap between rich and poor, Jonny & the Baptists’ lives turn upside down when Jonny betrays Paddy for financial gain. As Jonny enjoys the high life with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jerry Hall, Paddy falls into homelessness and despair.

A toe-tapping comedy about inequality, friendship and revolution in modern Britain, EAT THE POOR sees the multi-award-nominees continue to grow in scope and ambition – and even dabble in a small amount of actual economics.

“Wickedly amusing” – The Times

Nominated for five major awards (they’ve never won any), Jonny & the Baptists – real names Jonny Donahoe & Paddy Gervers – have rapidly become one of the UK’s hottest live musical comedy acts. Winning rave national reviews for their 2015 climate change comedy The End Is Nigh, they have also enjoyed regular broadcast work, major festival appearances and once topped the iTunes Comedy Chart with single ‘Farage’. Alongside, Paddy has a cult following for hit podcast Podshambles; while Jonny has been nominated for a New York Drama Desk Award for his hit one-man show Every Brilliant Thing on international tour, now an HBO special (broadcast over Christmas 2016).
