GIG NEWS: Cabaret Voltaire announce first UK performance in over 20 years at The Devil’s Arse Cave in Castleton, Derbyshire Saturday 29 April

The Devil’s Arse has been host to a handful of performances in recent years, its entranceway serves as a natural amphitheatre and, as part of one of the largest cave systems in the Peak District, it will be a unique host to the return of Cabaret Voltaire to the UK.

Cabaret Voltaire performed the first shows since the 90s in 2014. Recently speaking to FACT, Richard H. Kirk explained “It’s totally new, I don’t play anything from the past. I always make it really clear that if you think you’re going to come and hear the greatest hits then don’t come because you’re not. What you might get is the same spirit.”

Mute recently released the box sets Richard H. Kirk #7489 (Collected Works 1974 – 1989)and Sandoz #9294 (Collected Works 1992 – 1994) in 2016 and Richard H. Kirk is getting ready to release a solo album on his own label.

FESTIVAL NEWS: Tramlines 2017 completes After-party line-up

Tramlines, Sheffield’s award-winning inner-city festival, has unveiled a stack of new talent for the Saturday instalment of its official after-parties, which will take place at Fusion & Foundry and Yellow Arch Studios on Saturday 22nd July. A host of leading DJ talent has been added to the bill, including Gilles Peterson, Gerd Janson, Nightmares On Wax (DJ set), Andy Butler (Hercules & Love Affair), Prince Fatty & Horseman, 2 Bad Mice and dozens more. Curated in association with local promoters Nice Like Rice, Off Me Nut Records, Roots and Wild Live, the latest additions to the Tramlines after-parties pack a punch of quality house, techno, jungle, disco, grime and everything in between, and with tickets from just £12 + booking fee, you’d be hard pushed to find a better value ticket.

The full Tramlines after-party programme takes over Sheffield’s best clubbing spots, the o2 Academy, The Octagon, Fusion & Foundry and Yellow Arch Studios, on Friday 21st July and Saturday 22nd July. Acts already announced for the genre-busting after-parties include grime MC Bugzy Malone, a DJ set by the flawless Sister Bliss (Faithless), three-time MOBO winner Fuse ODG, garage royalty care of TQD and Artful Dodger, Austrian duo Camo & Krooked, The Streets’ Mike Skinner, drum & bass legends DJ Marky and DJ Zinc and tons more. For those who can’t bear to go home after Tramlines’ daytime live-music programme, the after-parties are a must.

Joining Tramlines for a takeover at Fusion & Foundry (Sheffield University) on Saturday 22 July is the ever-popular Nice Like Rice. The food-loving party crew can be regularly found serving up disco and house all over Sheffield, and for Tramlines they’ve pulled together a wickedly diverse lineup. Heading up the bill is BBC 6 Music selector and Tramlines’ favourite Gilles Peterson; the inimitable Nightmares On Wax; Gerd Janson, one of Germany’s most in-demand eclectic talents; Andy Butler, better known as the driving force behind retro-futurist kingpins Hercules & Love Affair, and the Nice Like Rice DJs.

Across the city at Yellow Arch Studios, festival-goers can expect a large dose of jungle, grime and bassline. In the Main Room, the brains behind 20Hz Soundsystem, Roots, will team up with Wild Live – the brains behind quality underground parties including Freshen Up and Boom Ting – to present renowned reggae producer Prince Fatty alongside MC supremacy Horseman. Cult label Off Me Nut Records step into the Warehouse (Room 2) to present a floor-shaking party with hardcore breakbeat outfit 2 Bad Mice, while many of the label’s top producers, such as Phatworld and Superior Cornrows will go back-to-back in what will undeniably be a rowdy grime-beat affair! Over in room three is drum and bass collective Displace, who bring even more beats and basslines to the proceedings with the Displace Crew and resident DJs.

As if this news wasn’t already huge enough, The Wedding Present will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of their seminal album George Best with the Gigantic faithful. An erudite, passionate and liberally uproarious release, George Best is surely one of the ultimate indie albums. Self-released in 1987, it set the template for raw twenty-something angst. Perfectly pitched in the sapient wit of a West Yorkshire accent, anthems like ‘What Did Your Last Servant Die Of’ and ‘My Favourite Dress’ quickly caught the attention of John Peel and the nation’s imagination. It’s obvious, The Wedding Present have all the hallmarks of a truly Gigantic headliner.

Formed in Gloucester in the early 90s EMF, or ‘Epsom Mad Funkers’, burst onto the scene with their debut album ‘Schubert Dip’, a record which scaled to the heady heights of number 3 in the UK album charts. Known for their casual attire and quintessentially 90s headwear, the band made shockwaves after scoring top ten hits with anthems like ‘Unbelievable’ and ‘I Believe’. Even more impressive still, the band topped the US Billboard 100 with ‘Unbelievable’, a feat almost unheard of for a debut single from a non-US artist. The track remains a catchy slice of brilliance that garnered worldwide fame for the band and singer- songwriter James Atkin back in the 90s.

The band were one of fewer than 10 people in the world to have had simultaneous number one hits in the UK and across the pond. It seems ‘Unbelievable’ and its place in indie history remains as impressive as ever. As for 2017, as we invite this seminal act to the Manchester Academy with the ecstatic groove at its core once, you can prepare to experience something truly unique at next year’s Gigantic Indie All Dayer.

POP WILL EAT ITSELF

Extending our reach further than ever before we’ll be bringing in bands from far and wide for a bill that promises to display the best of the genre from across the UK. Hailing from Stourbridge, POP WILL EAT ITSELF, take their name from an infamous line in an NME feature. Renowned as the archetypal grebo band, the group evolved throughout their career to incorporate more sample-drive elements. Their 1993 hit single ‘Get The Girl! Kill The Baddies!’ charted in the top 10 and will be a definitive highlight as the new-look five piece are poised to tear up Manchester Academy next year.

JIM BOB (formerly of CARTER USM)

JIM BOB is of course the lead singer of notorious electro punk pop band CARTER The Unstoppable Sex Machine – a socially conscious DIY rock duo from south London who had four top 10 albums (including a No 1) and 12 top 40 singles over a 10-year career. Now flying solo, Jim Bob tours both Carter songs and his own material to an ardent fan base, so expect choice cuts like ‘Sheriff Fatman’ and ‘The Only Living Boy In New Cross’
to satisfy the Manchester masses once again.

THE PRIMITIVES

Advancing the line up of Gigantic Vol. 4, Coventry band THE PRIMITIVES will be tracing their memorable lineage in front of Academy crowds. The Primitives first found their feet when peroxide bombshell Tracy Tracy was asked to front the band. Not only did she serve to inspire a more melodic approach, which saw the band record massive hits such as ‘Stop Killing Me’ and ‘Out of Reach’, but she also placed the group at the centre of the Blonde-pop movement. Their biggest hit, ‘Crash’, saw chart success on both sides of the Atlantic and which also surfaced on the soundtrack of the cult film Dumb and Dumber. A firm favourite of Manchester legend Morrissey – The Smiths singer was once was photographed wearing a Primitives T-shirts.

THOUSAND YARD STARE

Extend your gaze down the line up and you may just meet the eyes of THOUSAND YARD STARE. Once described by NME as the “brightest hope for the future” this Berkshire-based band will keep you trained on them throughout their performance with tracks like ‘No Score After Extra Time’. The band who enjoyed the top spot in the Melody Maker independent chart for their now legendary ‘Keepsake EP’ were one of the most popular supporting bands on the early 90s indie circuit and would often tour alongside Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine. Expect bourgeoning riffs and chest-swelling sing-alongs from the brilliance of the pre-Britpop era.

MARK MORRISS (THE BLUETONES)

And last but not by no means least, MARK MORRISS is a singer songwriter who famously made his name with Brit-pop heavyweights: BLUETONES. Mark has fronted the four piece over a successful and fruitful 15 year period, scoring 14 top ten singles including the incredible and 3 top ten albums, whilst touring the UK, Europe and Japan.

Bluetones had their defining moment with the smash hit ‘Slight Return’, a hook-laden 90s anthem, which launched the London four-piece to the forefront of the charts. Their seminal debut ‘Expecting To Fly’ briefly knocked Oasis’ ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?’ off the top of the UK albums chats and it wasn’t long before they were being touted as Britpop’s next big thing.

Over the last 20 years Mark Morriss have forged a lasting camaraderie with the venue and its audiences. The chance to see this lovable raconteur and a raft of
other era-defining acts is surely too good to miss.

GIG NEWS: Culture Club play Haydock Park Racecourse 22nd July 2017

Culture Club were one of the biggest pop bands of the 80s, racking up seven straight Top 10 hits in the UK and nine Top 10 singles in the US. Lead by flamboyant front man Boy George, the band won multiple awards including the 1984 Brit Award for ‘Best British Group’, and the Grammy Award for ‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Best British Single’ for bona fide worldwide smash hit ‘Karma Chameleon’. Selling over 50 million records worldwide, the bands hits include ‘Do You Really Want To Hurt Me’, ‘Time (Clock of the Heart)’ and ‘Church of the Poison Mind’. SINGLE REVIEW: jellyskin – ‘Eater’

In contrast to the band’s previous single ‘Milk Of Magnesia’ (you can read my review of that song) ‘Eater’ sets out it’s stall – so to speak – right from the get go. Fast squelches (you’ll know what I mean when you listen to it) introduce the track. And then you’re right into fast dirty dirty synth noise. But, wait, what is this, it’s an angelic voice, pure and clear. The contrast is quite quite wonderful. The angelic voice tells us that ‘nine times out of ten I will wear shoes, but this time I’m not’ and for some strange reason I find this quite profound.

Every time I hear this, and I’ve listened to it a lot, I get yet another way of interpreting it, it’s one of those songs. Yet there are some common threads – it seems to me to be like one of those dreams, or perhaps nightmares, where you are chased by a faceless horde.

The thing with jellyskin is that they are slippery, just when you get an idea of the sort of band they are they come up with something so completely different you’re thrown – although there’s a certain gothic splendour that runs through their material that holds it all together as ‘theirs’. That’s gothic as in dark rather than goth which as we all know is something rather different.

The band describe this as krautrock on Soundcloud but I’m reminded of early synth bands like The Normal, it’s synth driven but dirty. The vocals are nothing less than lovely and the layers of sound that creep in are just the icing on the cake.

By this time I think you’ll have got the impression that I like this, and you’re right, I like it a lot, a whole lot. Listen to this loud and just spin, it’s that sort of track. But do take some time out to be bewitched by that voice.

Can’t wait to hear what jellyskin will give us next.

BAND NEWS: Hands Off Gretel promote their DIY video Release with people power

Barnsley Alt Rock Grunge band Hands Off Gretel is trialling a new social media tool to launch their latest video. The band is using people power to help promote their new video, due for release on 18th April, rather than shell out for expensive PR. In the first 24 hours of the launch, their campaign has already exceeded its target, with a possible social media reach of almost 400k people when the video is released and trending as the #1 campaign on the Thunderclap site.

Instead of trying to secure the usual video premieres, with the likes of Kerrang or another Alternative Press premiere, the band wanted to see what they could achieve by themselves. Hands Off Gretel have utilised a platform called ‘Thunderclap’ after reading about it being used for political campaigns, including the White House. It works by getting people to signup to support your campaign and agreeing to share a pre-defined message on Twitter, Facebook or Tumbler at an agreed date and time. The results being that hundreds of posts go out at the same time, announcing the video release, with a huge social reach guaranteed, creating a ‘thunderclap’!

The band has worked hard to build a strong online presence, with over 20k fans across all the social media platforms. In September last year the band crowd funded their debut album ‘Burn The Beauty Queen’, with hundreds of pre-orders via the bands website from around the world, fans eager to get hold of the album, limited edition artwork, zines and t-shirts. Now the band are calling on their fans to help promote their next video release on the 18th April, using a totally new strategy, which they hope will increase their share rate.

The bands new video ‘Bad Egg’ is a totally DIY production, something that the band is proud of. Everything they do as a band; videos, photos, artwork and merchandise is all designed and produced by the lead singer Lauren Tate. The video is no exception, with Lauren’s mum doing all the camera work and Lauren editing and producing the final video.

LIVE REVIEW: Thomas & The Empty Orchestra, George Gadd & Colder Bones, Gullivers Manchester, 5th April

It was with a great sense of anticipation that I took the trip to Gullivers to see Thomas & The Empty Orchestra play live for the first time. Having reviewed his last two releases (‘Patron Saint’ and ‘A More Equal Punishment‘) I’ve become quite a fan.

But first a word about the venue and an admission. The gig was held in the acoustic lounge room of Gullivers which you might describe as intimate, so intimate in fact that you’re virtually toe-to-toe with the performers. This could be either quite intimidating or a great opportunity to really connect with the performers. For me the latter applies, I really like being up close and personal with the performers. The admission is that sadly I wasn’t able to stay for the headlining act Bike Tuff, a not very LSF thing to do.

First up was Colder Bones (Matthew Awbery – of the band Plastic – acoustic incarnation – Facebook Page). Matthew played a set of intense emotion laden songs – in a sort of grunge acoustic style. So intense was his performance that I became quite engrossed in it. At times his emotion seems to take over and he shouts the words with barely restrained anger. The words are important in these songs but so is the performance of those words. Given that at the time of his performance the audience was – how shall we put it – sparse, you have to admire somebody who can put that level of energy into a performance. I was hugely impressed and I can recommend catching him if you get the chance.

The audience numbers thankfully increased for George Gadd. (Facebook Page) His style is much lighter and more traditionally acoustic. He also has, I must say, a great line in banter. The one thing that has stayed with me is his voice which is clear and light. For me I was entertained but not moved by his songs, although that clearly wasn’t an opinion held by the rest of the audience who really seemed to get into it. Unfortunately, on the night, his thing was just not for me.

And so to Thomas & The Empty Orchestra (who I shall refer to as Thomas, it’s just easier). Given that his recorded material is lushly arranged in places and that this was a solo performance with an electric guitar, mouth organ and bass drum pad, I didn’t know quite what to expect. What I immediately found out is that what replaces the ‘lost lush arrangements’ is Thomas himself.

What I expected – and I’m not really sure why – was a quietly restrained performance but what we got was a foot stomping, ‘out there’ performance. Thomas took advantage of the small room size to, at times, step away from the mic and just sing unamplified. There was banter, jokes and even a sing-along. It was a performance that was bigger than the room.

Stripped back and sometimes shifted to a country, blues or rock edged arrangement the songs still work as well as the recorded material. Showing that if a song is well written it can take being changed for live performance.

Thomas opened with ‘A More Equal Punishment’ and to be honest from that point I stopped being a reviewer and became a fan, albeit a fan with a large camera glued to his face for most of the set.

Highlights for me were the aforementioned ‘A More Equal Punishment’, ‘Patron Saint’ featuring some rather nice mouth organ ‘breaks’ and ‘Last Orders On Ladies Night’.

We also got a preview of the next single ‘My Old Heart’ although what he played was the song version written before he started recording it. He explained that during the recording he decided that had to rewrite it to be about the world we are in now, rather than the original which was about a bad relationship (or at least this is what I think he said). But he couldn’t actually remember the rewritten version so what we got was the original version. I rather liked the song so perhaps he might consider recording the original as well.

OK so I’m already a fan, but I did take some time out from the performance just to see how the rest of the audience were enjoying it. Seemed to me that everyone was into it. And when, on the last song, Thomas asked us to sing-along we all did.
