TOUR NEWS: Rick Shea Ireland & UK solo tour May-June 2019

0

Rick Shea cut his teeth in the bars and honky-tonks of San Bernardino, California and his songs reflect the folk, country, rock and Mexican influences he grew up with there. The Town Where I Live, Rick’s latest album, emerges from that world of haunts, hard choices and dusty rock & roll.

From the rollicking fare thee well of ‘Goodbye Alberta’, the hard country twang of ‘The Starkville Blues’, the gospel touch of ‘Trouble Like This’ and the guitar driven burn of ‘(You’re Gonna Miss Me) When I’m Gone’, it’s an album of lost roads, lost dreams and long rambling goodbyes.

Shea says he comes from the Dave Alvin school of folk music, a school that includes Woody Guthrie, Howlin’ Wolf, Curtis Mayfield and Chuck Berry to name just a few. “Songs tell our stories and our history and songs were how those stories were shared in the past, I’d like to continue that tradition.”

As a solo artist he’s recorded 10 critically acclaimed albums and has toured the US and Europe.

Rick’s also played as a guitarist with Dave Alvin, Wanda Jackson and a lot of other folks and he keeps a busy schedule of recording and performing.

VIDEO, TOUR & ALBUM NEWS: JAWS video for ‘Do You Remember’. dates November 2019, album ‘The Ceiling’ out now

0

Following the release of their long-awaited, and critically acclaimed third album, “The Ceiling”, and a short run of sold-out UK headline dates, Birmingham dream-pop group JAWS have shared a new video for their recent single “Do You Remember?”.

Their third and most ambitious album yet, “The Ceiling”, sees the band head back into the studio with Gethin Pearson, who also produced 2016’s “Simplicity”. The album represents another musical leap forward for the band, adding new textures and further honing a sound that has been theirs since their inception.

The new video follows the band’s latest singles “FEAR” and “”Please Be Kind” as well as their propulsive 2018 single and album opener “Driving At Night”, which earned plaudits from the likes of DIY, who described it as “A striking introduction to their third full-length”, as well as receiving praise from The Line of Best Fit, Clash, Paste, Dork, Gigwise and featuring in Hype Machine’s 10 most popular music video charts.

Speaking about the video front man and guitarist Connor Schofield says “For the video we wanted to work with Morgan Tedd again who did the Driving At Night video, the simple meaning behind the video is that your head doesn’t switch off when you close your eyes and we wanted to have a video that was constantly moving, a lot of the shots are as if you’re the passenger on a journey, which ties in the meaning behind the song”

As well as the new video, JAWS also announce another UK headline tour for November 2019. The announcement follows the bands recent sold-out UK tour dates. Speaking about the reaction to the shows, Schofield says “The recent live dates were the biggest shows we’d ever done and the reaction was beyond what we’d ever expected, every night was like a celebration of the new record and what we’d achieved up until that point and now we want to take that same atmosphere to more places around the country, we really can’t wait for these shows, there’s a few places we haven’t been to for years.”

‘Blue Sky In Your Head’ is Lighthouse Family’s fourth album, and sees them back on their original label Polydor and reunited with the A&R that discovered them, Colin Barlow, and their first manager, Keith Armstrong; the same team that was around them when they were at their FM Radio-dominating peak. The lead single is the Radio 2 playlisted ‘My Salvation’, a lushly melodic track every bit as good as you’d expect from the band that produced the timeless hit singles ‘Lifted’, ‘High’, and ‘Ocean Drive’ – all of which included on ‘Essentials’, which will come packaged with ‘Blue Sky In Your Head’ and contains ten classic Lighthouse Family songs remastered for the very first time to celebrate their 25-year recording history.

Tunde Baiyewu and Paul Tucker formed Lighthouse Family after meeting at Newcastle University in the early 1990s. Their 1995 debut album ‘Ocean Drive’ was a slow-burning success, going six times platinum while staying in the album charts for almost three years. ‘Lifted’ became one the defining songs of the era, a pop-soul classic that was inescapable on radio, becoming the soundtrack of high street Britain, drivetime Britain and night-out Britain.

The 1997 follow-up, ‘Postcards From Heaven’, featured three Top Ten singles – ‘Raincloud’, ‘High’ and ‘Lost in Space’ – and also went six-times platinum, charting across Europe, the Far East, Australia and New Zealand. Their third album, ‘Whatever Gets You Through The Day’ (2001) produced another Top Ten single in the shape of ‘(I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be) Free/One’, but by this time the band were at breaking point, their friendship burnt out after years on the road living in each others’ pockets.

In the intervening years Paul formed a band, The Orange Lights, while Tunde released two solo albums, but the old connection between the pair remained and they reunited in 2016, determined to make a new record, something that was classic Lighthouse Family, but also sounded like it could be made today.

The years have not dulled Lighthouse Family’s remarkable ability to craft elegantly beautiful songs. Their first single in almost two decades, ‘My Salvation’ is an upbeat track that flies high on lush strings and has echoes of Pet Shop Boys at their imperial best. The rippling, rolling title track ‘Blue Sky In Your Head’ has a theme, says Tunde, similar to ‘Ocean Drive’. “A dream of a place, a dream of escape, something you want to get away to.”

“And that’s kind of you what you want Lighthouse Family songs to do: put a Blue Sky In Your Head,” adds Paul.

Indeed, the new album has something that has always been present with Lighthouse Family: a sense of optimism and renewal. “We’re trying to create something anthemic and uplifting but real,” says Paul. “That idea of: ‘I know the sun’s gonna shine again’, it’s quintessential Lighthouse Family.” Messages of hope and uplift. Sentiments of community and communion. Songs of love and connection. Tunes to sing, loudly, from the heart. It can only be Lighthouse Family, back to dream up the magic all over again.

Joining previously announced headliners Rudimental, Groove Armada and Basement Jaxx DJ Set will be international crowd pleasers Hot 8 Brass Band. The New Orleans based band will be serving up some seriously funk-laden sounds alongside DJ, journalist, national underground music treasure and walking encyclopedia Bill Brewster; UK DJ/producer duo and prolific remixers Psychemagik and fabric mainstay & all-round house music legend Terry Farley.

As ever, Beat-Herder will continue to join the dots between a multitude of genres across the electronic music spectrum. DJ Q will bring a lively concoction of bassline, garage and grime to the Toil Trees stage alongside expert digger in bass, house and techno, Huxley.

Over at The Fortress, a monstrous construction of corrugated iron and the refuge of Beat-Herder’s most hardcore revellers, breakbeat deities Stanton Warriors will perform alongside DJ, producer and promoter of Ireland’s fast rising eponymous club night, Rebüke (Defected / Toolroom); Mancunion D&B producer Mark XTC; acclaimed collective FooR; underground D&B and jungle heads Selecta J-Man and Kelvin 373.

Music is just part of the experience at Beat-Herder. Entirely handmade from scratch, the stages stand out as something truly different in the increasingly cookie cutter festival landscape. That attention to detail creates an immersive world full of beguiling and intriguing creative concepts.

What other festivals give you the opportunity to explore underground tunnels, dance to drum and bass in a chapel or get inked in the functioning tattoo parlour? And if the hedonism gets a little too much, guests can slow the pace by lounging in the heated hidden swimming pool, sitting by the huge fire in the stone circle or enjoy some retro entertainment at the site’s very own working men’s club.

And it’s not just the site which yields bonkers results from a meticulous attention to detail. Every year, Beat-Herder sets a fancy dress theme, with guests bringing their A-game when it comes to original interpretations and masterful costumes. This year, the fancy dress theme has been announced as ‘the letter R’.

Beat-Herder continues to exist as it did back when it started as a free DIY party in 1998: uncompromising, unwavering and distinguished by an overwhelming sense of community. Its reputation as one of the friendliest festivals around can be attributed to its loyal followers – friends, couples and families who create new memories to cherish in a bold and barmy atmosphere each summer.

VIDEO NEWS: LIFE drop video for ‘Moral Fibre’

0

Following the release of their new single ‘Moral Fibre’, which was recently b-listed on BBC 6 Music and earned plaudits from the likes of, BBC Radio 1, Radio X, NME Radio, DIY, Dork, Gigwise and more, Hull outfit LIFE have now shared a new video to accompany the single.

Fiercely independent as ever the band directed and produced the video themselves with the help of local filmmaker Josh Moore. Speaking about the video, frontman Mez Green says, “Entering the surreal world of Hull artist Anna Bean we chose to reflect on when we lived and dined as the ants that took the sugar mountain from an empire built on Teletubbie colours and 70s shit-disco.

Once again re-uniting with our friend behind the lens Josh Moore we present to you a piss-take of a piss-take that’s a little bit tongue and hella-lot of cheek and a ton of pissant.

Shot in Hull and shot for fun let Moral Fibre get in in your bones. Respect your community.”

An anthemic and frenetic slice of art-punk laced with sardonic and irreverent lyrics, ‘Moral Fibre’ is the first single to be taken from the bands highly anticipated new album. Produced by Luke Smith (Foals) and mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer (Parquet Courts), the band hone in on a bigger and more focused sound.

Speaking about the single, Mez goes on to say, “Moral Fibre is a stinging and frenzied shut up and step aside – a tongue in cheek reflection on the music industry, that beige scene, those that pimp poverty from Mummy’s detached house, those that trade in fair-trade cocaine and those that preach behind their keyboard. I’m taking the piss, but I’m deadly serious!”

GIG NEWS: #360RAW9: Sir Curse, Daves, Thieves Of Misfortune, Mark Of A Thief – 360 Club @ Lending Room Leeds – Friday 12th July 2019

0

Coming hot on the heels of the announcement of #360RAW8, RICHARD WATSON, promoter of the 360 Club, and ALAN RAW, presenter of BBC Introducing West Yorkshire and BBC Introducing Humberside, are proud to announce the ninth of these special events showcasing the incredible talent emerging from West Yorkshire and beyond.

Taking place on FRIDAY 12th JULY the event focusses again on the region’s finest and most exciting emerging artists, all of them this time from the fair city of Leeds: SIR CURSE, DAVES, THIEVES OF MISFORTUNE and MARK OF A THIEF.

Event link: https://www.facebook.com/events/279607086299513/
Ticket link: https://www.crashrecords.co.uk/360RAW9

As with previous #360RAW events, the night will see Alan Raw DJ before and between the live sets, playing new music of all styles from local artists. Anyone can turn up and meet the face behind BBC Introducing and are encouraged to bring demos which he may well play on the night, or pass onto the producers for consideration on his shows. The ethos of #360RAW is purely about supporting emerging acts, a passion that both Richard and Alan share, and one that sees them freely offer musicians their time, their help and their advice without any hidden agenda.

SIR CURSE

TAROT: https://youtu.be/HzrrG3btZv0

“… Proper jovial bouncy energetic awesomeness, a full throttle mix of music and visual performance; their style, sound and music is a genuine art form …” THE ELECTRIC RADIO SHOW

Experimenting with rock, theatre and vocals that portray a palpably sinister character, SIR CURSE is a six piece Leeds band that bridge the gap between theatrics and music, who have been described as what might result if Kate Bush and System of a Down were to join the circus together. They formed during university, are influenced by the likes of The Brothers Grimm and American Horror Story, and released their debut single TAROT last year following the success of their first full length UK tour. Combining dark and malevolent undertones within an upbeat and diverse fusion of rock, folk and gypsy-style jazz elements, the single earned the band an appearance at this year’s Boomtown Fair.

DAVES

CALL IT A LIE EP: https://wearedaves.bandcamp.com/album/call-it-a-lie-ep

“… Deep into a set of aggressive hardcore influenced political punk rock, by the time I made it into the room the vocalist was hanging upside down on the infamous girder, shouting ‘Get out of my city’ at the top of his voice, aimed at anyone with fascist values …” BROKEN ARROW MAGAZINE

DAVES are a loud, raw and passionate punk three piece who revel in provocative and impassioned performances. With two EPs released within 12 months on One Step Outside Records, their DIY ethos sees them continue to win over audiences with post-hardcore songs that reveal their frustrations with the world around them. DAVES will have you laughing and gasping; and they won’t just have you on the edge of your seat, they’ll have you picking up the chair and throwing it through the window.

THIEVES OF MISFORTUNE

BLACK TONGUE: https://youtu.be/akZqhpEf_9I

“… They take the desert jam sounds of early QOTSA and infuse it with a healthy dose of psychedelia; after one listen you’ll be addicted …” THREE SONGS & OUT

THIEVES OF MISFORTUNE are on alt-rock trio who record and produce all their own music and videos, and released their 5 track HOUNDS EP earlier this year. They draw inspiration from those they consider to be the greats – PJ Harvey, QOTSA, Grinderman, Tom Waits, Portishead, Radiohead – not to recreate but to be inspired to produce great music without limits.
