0

THE FAIM have announced their STATE OF MIND WORLD TOUR. Continuing on from their hugely successful and sold out headline UK and Europe tour earlier this year, the band will then hit a further 23 cities across Australia and the UK and Europe again, adding to an already massive 150+ shows in the past 13 months.

Singer Josh Raven says: “Time has come to open our STATE OF MIND. It’s hard to believe that four guys from Perth are even announcing these shows for our headline tour. We’re bringing our craziness to new cities with new songs and playing more incredible festivals like Lollapalooza, Reading and Leeds and Frequency Festival. This is beyond humbling and it’s all possible because of the incredible relationship we’ve created with you. We’re beyond excited to see all your wonderful faces. Endless love.”

VENUE NEWS: Funding breakthrough for grassroots music venues

0

Music Venue Trust, the charity created to protect, secure and improve UK grassroots music venues, is celebrating a significant step forward today. At an event co-hosted by Arts Council England and Ticketmaster at The Great Escape, new money for venues was officially announced. Arts Council England launched their Supporting Grassroots Live Music funding strand – a ring-fenced fund of £1.5 million within the Arts Council’s National Lottery Project Grants for grassroots music venues and promoters. Key figures from the Live Music Industry also presented advances with the Pipeline Investment Fund, explaining what initiatives are being implemented so far to raise money from the top of the industry to feed back into the grassroots of the industry.

Darren Henley, CEO, Arts Council England said: ““Grassroots music venues are essential both for our world-renowned music industry and communities across the country, and there needs to be a collective effort from both the public sector and music industry to support them. With this fund we’re ensuring that grassroots venues and promoters working in genres such as rock, pop and hip-hop have the support they need to create the best possible environment for artists and audiences.”

Music Venue Trust and Arts Council England will be working together to assist venues to access this funding, ensuring that tangible improvements are made to the sound, lighting and facilities for both artists and audiences.

Alongside this major funding announcement, Music Venue Trust today announced the first breakthrough steps in funding from the live music industry to directly support grassroots music venues. Representatives from the Live Music Industry have been meeting with Music Venue Trust since January to identify mechanisms for reinvestment in the venues which act as the research and development department of the industry. Major actions agreed so far include: Use of Apprenticeship Levy funds to support apprentices in grassroots music venues, Guest List donations at major events and venues to support improvements at venues, donation options on ticketing across a huge number of events, and direct donations from major companies to support the MVT Emergency Response service which rescues venues from noise complaints, licensing and planning issues.

Phil Bowdery, Executive President of Touring, International, Live Nation said:
“Every musician that becomes a household name has spent time playing in grassroots music venues. Live Nation and Ticketmaster’s support and funding, taken together with the new Arts Council England fund, is a massive boost to those venues and the musicians who play in them. Live Nation knows that tomorrow’s music relies on investment today. Today is a good day for British music.”

Andrew Parsons, MD Ticketmaster UK, said: “All of today’s announcements are a huge step forward for grassroots venues – venues that are the beating heart of the music industry, without them British talent doesn’t have a place to grow into the next Lewis Capaldi or Mabel. As a long-time supporter of MVT, we’re excited to announce we’ll be giving fans the opportunity to add a donation to MVT through our website. With millions of digital users annually, this will also give unparalleled visibility to MVT and the significant work they do to keep grassroots venues alive and well for us all.

Emma Bownes, Vice President of Programming, AEG Europe said: “Despite the current boom in UK live music, grassroots music venues in the UK are finding it increasingly hard to survive. The announcements by Music Venue Trust and Arts Council England today, alongside funding initiatives from supporters across the industry, will be an important step in protecting small music venues and supporting the emerging talent that use these spaces to hone their craft.”

Discussions with the Pipeline Investment Fund stakeholders, governments and funding bodies in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will continue across the next few months to deliver more options for the music industry to support grassroots music venues through the Pipeline Investment Fund programme.

Mark Davyd, CEO of MVT said: “This is obviously a huge day for grassroots music venues. The real support they need and have been crying out for has arrived. We want to ensure that venues across the UK are able to access the support they need to become real centres of excellence. Britain’s artists and audiences deserve world class, industry leading, grassroots touring circuit. Delivering that circuit is the responsibility of everyone in the music industry, cultural sector, and government. That doesn’t stop with the live music industry and cultural partners making these fantastic announcements today. Labels, publishers, streaming services, we believe everyone has a stake in getting this right. When our grassroots music venues thrive, the whole industry benefits.”

LIVE REVIEW: Antony and Friends – Central Methodist Church, Todmorden – 27th April 2019

0

As well as the piano playing of Antony Brannick, which included some lovely Chopin mazurkas, this concert featured the Square Chapel Brass. This expressive, assertive ensemble comprises Lawrence Killian and Julian Whitehead on trumpet, Judith Stones on horn, and Andrew Griffiths on tuba.

Their first piece was derived from Oscar Strauss’s “Serenade” a piece originally scored for strings, which came over well in brass. The second half included some more recent pieces, like Anderson’s “Bugler’s Holiday”. Next, Saint-Saens’ elephant, from the “Carnival of the Animals”, featured the tuba. “It’s Not Unusual” by Reed and Mills featured the trombone and Brubeck’s cool “Take 5” the horn. The concert ended with the brisk “Berliner Luft” march.

TOUR NEWS: Laura Stevenson to tour the UK June 2019

0

Out now, on Don Giovanni Records, The Big Freeze is the long-awaited fifth album by New York-based songwriter Laura Stevenson. In support of the new album, Stevenson will be touring Europe and the UK this June.

PURCHASE “THE BIG FREEZE”

Recorded in her childhood home during the dead of winter, The Big Freeze represents a pivotal step for Stevenson. Despite her pedigree in the punk and indie rock scenes, and the occasional inclusion of a backing band (like the sprightly, C86-inspired pop track “Dermatillomania”), for the first time on record Stevenson’s voice and guitar are in clear and highlighted focus. It is a natural aesthetic choice for the musician, who has often toured as a solo act and who pulls influence from the great American songbook, and a choice that plays to the core strength and organic beauty of her writing. And though it is easily the darkest and most emotionally-devastating album of Stevenson’s career, it is also without a doubt her most powerful.

Stevenson builds on her own private worlds with choruses of multi-tracked voices, swarms of cellos, French horns and violins; orchestration that blooms and swells throughout each intimate performance. Exploring thematic ideas of distance and misconnection; worlds pulling apart, aching loneliness, and attempts to drive out hibernating dormant demons.

Live Dates:

June 20th – Camden Assembly, London
June 21st – Patterns, Brighton
June 22nd – The Cavern, Exeter
June 23rd – Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
June 25th – Broadcast, Glasgow
June 26th – Night People, Manchester
June 27th – The Exchange, Bristol
July 3rd – Whelan’s, Dublin, Ireland

But if you have missed out on Glastonbury tickets do not worry as Nick Lowe’s Quality Rock and Roll Revue is coming to Pocklington Arts Centre (PAC) just three days before the festival!

As a silver-haired, tender-hearted but sharp-tongued singer-songwriter, Nick Lowe has no equal. Starting with 1995’s ‘The Impossible Bird’ through to 2011’s ‘The Old Magic’, Lowe has turned out a fantastic string of albums, each one devised in his West London home, and recorded with a core of musicians who possess the same veteran savvy.

Now he is bringing his ‘Quality Rock and Roll Revue’, starring Los Straitjackets complete with their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks, to Pocklington Arts Centre (PAC) on Tuesday 25 June, 8pm.

Lowe’s new four-song EP “Tokyo Bay” features Los Straitjackets as his backing band.
Los Straitjackets are the leading practitioners of the lost art of the guitar instrumental.
Using the music of the Ventures, The Shadows, and with Link Wray and Dick Dale as a jumping off point, the band has taken their unique, high-energy brand of original rock & roll around the world.

Clad in their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks, the “Jackets” have delivered their trademark guitar licks to 16 albums, thousands of concerts and dozens of films and TV shows.

Their most recent album ‘What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace Love & Los Straitjackets’ consists of instrumental covers of Nick Lowe Songs.

Nick Lowe’s Quality Rock and Roll Revue starring Los Straitjackets comes to PAC on Tuesday 25 June, 8pm. Tickets are £35 each, available now at www.pocklingtonartscentre.co.uk or call the Box Office on 01759 301547.

Speaking about the reunion, Siobhan and Marcy said:

Siobhan: “Neither of us wanted to go into it if there was anything apart from friendship and unity. We did not want a repeat of 1992. Life’s too short. So I think we just explored it slowly. I realised what a perfect writing partner she is for me…there’s some sort of weird fusion of energies that feels fated. It’s like this third entity exists that is neither me nor her, it’s the two of us”

Marcy: “There was no stopping this. It was like this snowball that just kept on gathering more and more speed. I think we’ve come to a point where we respect and understand each other more than we ever could have back then. That’s the simplest way to put it. We’ve come to a mutual understanding of and respect for who each other are. It’s just about acceptance – acceptance of who we both are, for each other and to each other”

As well as the new tracks ‘All The Queen’s Horses’ and ‘C U Next Tuesday’, Singles Party is made up of classic Shakespears Sister singles, including ‘Stay’, ‘You’re History’, ‘Hello (Turn Your Radio On)’, and ‘I Don’t Care’. The deluxe version of the album features another unreleased track ‘Cat Worship’ and remixes of ‘You’re History’ and ‘You Made Me Come To This’ remixed by Catz ‘n Dogz and HMD Pulsatron respectively.

Shakespears Sister’s debut album, 1989’s Sacred Heart was a top ten record and spawned the band’s first hit single, ‘You’re History’, which also went top ten. Even greater success followed with a second album, Hormonally Yours, in 1992; amongst its hit singles ‘I Don’t Care’, ‘Hello (Turn Your Radio On)’ and ‘Stay’, which remained at number one for eight weeks. The triumphs and accolades piled up: over a million albums sold, a Brit award for best video for ‘Stay’ and an Ivor Novello award for Outstanding Collection of Songs for the band’s second album, 1992’s Hormonally Yours. The pair went onto headline the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury in 1992 and supported Prince at Celtic Park at Prince’s personal request.

Singles Party is released through London Records on 19th July.

VIDEO, ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Bad Breeding video for ‘Whose Cause’, new album out 21st June, dates July 2019

0

Bad Breeding have released the second part of their direct message in video form from their new album, Exiled, scheduled for release on One Little Indian Records on June 21st. The collage video was created by Owen Deutsch of D4MT Labs and NYC punks, Kaleidoscope.

“Whose Cause? explores political misdirection in the media and its role in sowing seeds of division, suspicion and distrust in our communities,” explains front man Christopher Dodd. “It touches on the nefarious ties between capital and a pocketed media class, while commenting on how instruments of the right have harnessed and manipulated divisive politics of identity in an attempt to dent the collective bonds of solidarity that bind our communities together. It’s about pushing beyond force-fed narratives and looking at the disastrous implications reactionary storytelling has on propping up the survival of late capitalism and the patrician outriders it funds and protects: the gilded bourgeoisie, the imperialists, the warmongers, the contemptuous old-money hawks, the emboldened corporate elite.”

SINGLE REVIEW: Pathways – ‘Remember’

0

Pathways’ single is another one of those ‘singles from an indie-rock band that I’m really glad I actually listened to’. The thing is that sometimes LSF gets so many review submissions that listening to all of them is virtually impossible – although we do try, honest – and we have to decide what we actually ‘take that first listen to’ to decide whether we can review it. And it’s unfortunately the case that indie isn’t something that ‘floats our boat’ that much (Hint there for bands submitting tracks for review, do try to do more than just say you’re an indie band – Ed).

So why, I hear you ask, is this something you’re glad you listened to? Well Pathways’ take on indie is rather more alternative rock and pretty raucous, and this is a very good thing. And they have a trump card up their sleeves – of which more later.

‘Remember’ is full of raw guitars and drives along, it’s a blast. It has that alternative rock quiet loud thing going on. And this is fantastic. Behind all of that is the indie sound, it’s there but it’s not way up front. And it’s really well played, this is a band who know their stuff.

But, the absolute standout thing about this track is the vocals. Over this raw indie/alternative rock Anna sings in the most surprising way, well it was for me anyway. Her vocals are kinda almost folk-ish in places, and towards the end of the track burst into something that reminded me of Stevie Nicks. This sounds strange, it sounds as though it wouldn’t work, but honestly it’s brilliant. And there are some completely wonderful backing vocals in there too.

The other thing about this song is that it’s so bloody earwormy, it stays with you. And that’s a surprise for me, because stuff like this doesn’t usually do that. And for the life of me I can’t say why, it just is how it is. This track has something, that certain indefinable thing, that makes it stay with you. And it makes me smile, I just can’t help grinning when I listen to it.

Boy, am I glad I stayed up extra late just so that I could take that first listen. This thing is fabulous. It’s just a blast of pure joy.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Bastile new album ‘Doom Days’ out 14th June, dates November/December 2019

0

The band have also released a new single ‘JOY’  – LISTEN HERE

Doom Days, Bastille’s grippingly confident third album, is a record of hope for turbulent times. Made by Dan Smith with bandmates Kyle Simmons, Will Farquarson and Chris ‘Woody’ Wood, and producer Mark Crew, it sees the Grammy nominated, Brit winning four-piece stretch out and open up like never before.

Doom Days marks something of a shift in perception from its widely acclaimed No.1 predecessor ‘Wild World’, which confronted the world and the actions of those in power. Recorded throughout 2018 at the band’s South London studio, “One Eyed Jacks”, the new album captures the need to temporarily switch off and escape whilst taking the listener on a big night out in search of distraction from the surrounding apocalypse; be that screaming along to the radio in the back of an Uber careering through the city (the electric Quarter Past Midnight), getting loved up in the company of good friends (future classic 4AM), a casual hook-up (Another Place) or the end-of-night longing to be with somebody (the captivating Those Nights). It revels in the bad decisions we make both personally in our relationships and collectively on a macro scale (Bad Decisions), tells a relatable tale of being cornered into a deep discussion about the world’s problems when all you want to do is have a good time (Million Pieces), and wryly confronts modern anxieties, taking side-swipes at phone addiction, porn addiction, fake news and climate change denial (the uncompromising Doom Days).

Doom Days finds Bastille at their most lyrically provocative, most accomplished, and most vital. It taps into globally felt worries whilst also working on a much more intimate level. Setting the album over the course of one night allows the band to hold a mirror up to the world using personal, relatable situations.

Bastille’s unique sound – that cinematic, ever changing odd pop that masks the unusual subject matters and sometimes bleak realities reflected in their lyrics – has connected with audiences across the globe like no other British band in recent memory. Having sold over 8 million albums and with accumulated global streams reaching over 6.5 billion, the band continue to be one of Spotify’s top 40 most listened to artists in the world. Their previous albums both debuted at No.1 in the U.K. and charted top 10 in the U.S. Recent single “Happier”, now certified platinum in the UK, spent a full 6 months in the top 10 of the US Hot 100 chart.

As you’d expect of a band that have always cared little about genre, their third album finds them still evolving and pushing things forward. Doom Days bustles with energy and ideas. Its diverse sound takes in gospel, house music and R&B to name a few, and incorporates instrumentation inspired by their much-acclaimed Re-Orchestrated tour. The album is at times introspective, intimate, political and also perhaps their most danceable yet, with tracks like Million Piecesand Nocturnal Creaturesbuilt on 90s breakbeats and UK garage hooks. Clever pop culture references, mood-setting dialogue clips and a rolling cast of backing vocalists add textures and voices to this night out and help elevate many of the album’s special moments.

Doom Days is a record that celebrates real human connections and urges us to keep searching for moments of elation. It’s an album that starts in the middle of an Uber ride through the city streets and ends waking on the kitchen floor with the healing sounds of euphoric new single Joy, which sees the demons of life’s hangovers dispelled by a simple phone call from someone special. “That glimmer of hope at the end of the album says everything,” says Dan. “The smallest human gesture can pull you back from the brink.”

To mark the release of “Doom Days” the band are excited to announce a run of 9 intimate dates throughout the UK supporting local venues in towns and cities away from the usual touring route. These unique shows will give fans the opportunity to experience an ‘apocalyptic party’ club night, warming them up with DJ sets before taking them on a journey through the narrative of the album, which the band will play live from start to finish.
