SINGLE REVIEW: Reardon Love – ‘Sweet Brandon Teena (Respond To Me)’

0

The first time I listened to Reardon Love’s ‘Sweet Brandon Teena’ I wasn’t that sure, however thankfully I gave it another chance and it clicked for me. I suddenly really liked the rather warped sound of the guitar in the verses against the rather more driving choruses. It’s an interesting thing musically.

I was also rather intrigued by the name in the title. Some of you may get this immediately but I didn’t (for which I apologise, it should be something I know about). I was helped by the information that the band added to their Youtube video which says ‘Sweet Brandon Teena pays homage to one of our modern societies great injustices, raising awareness about discrimination in a time of powerful social justice’. What this didn’t tell me was who was Brandon Teena, I had to Google that. So for those of you who don’t know – Brandon Teena was an American trans man who was raped and murdered in Humboldt, Nebraska. His life and death were the subject of the film Boys Don’t Cry. So the subject of this song is an important one.

The thing is that if a band tackles an important issue then the words need to be good, they need to reflect the importance of that. In the case of this song what Reardon Love do with the words is to provide something that is more of a jumping off point for research in my case, and the case of people who know what the song is about without having to research, I’d guess they provide a sort of commentary. They don’t tell the story. Once you know the story then the words make sense.

So back to the music – the band describe themselves as ‘The New Wave of Britpop’ and yes, you can hear hints of some Britpop, but also of some rather earlier bands – the warped guitar sound is rather Cure like – and they seem to mix this with something of an indie sound. Musically this thing is great.

I love this single. It sets out to educate and campaign, it has has a message, and I like music with a message. Musically it’s all there. It’s a wonderful combination.

The info

The Hull based band say:

“Born in the autumn of 2018, Reardon Love took centre stage with one sole aim. To champion the underdog, hail the outsider and liberate the falsely accused.

Armed with a message so staunch you are at one with their disdain for prejudice, these social justice warriors are already informing those that want to hear… and those that don’t!

Whatever the destination, be it global domination or social suicide, it promises to be one hell of a journey”

Matt Fletcher – Guitar/Vocals
Dan Wilby – Bass Guitar
Jed Pearson – Drums/Percussion
Josh Chesman – Synth/Guitar

GIG NEWS: Everly Pregnant Brothers 10th Anniversary Special at Fibbers York on June 1st 2019

0

Ten years is a long run for any band these days, especially in an age of throw away culture, it can be hard for acts to cut through the noise, connect with fans and carve out a niche which actually resonates with audiences. Sheffield’s very own kings of parody; The Everly Pregnant Brothers however do seem to have done just that! The brothers unique brand of off kilter ukulele comedy has seen the project go from strength to strength, securing an almost die hard cult following across Yorkshire and beyond which has proved to have some real longevity. The band are now gearing up for a year of 10th anniversary headline shows, including Fibbers York on Saturday June 1st.

To have made it 10 years is remarkable as Everly Pregnant Brothers were only formed as a drunken dare by Pete Mckee and Richard Bailey in 2009. The success of the dare prompted the pair to draft in a bunch of disparate chaps who had three things in common, the love of beer, ukuleles and having a laugh. Pete Mckee stated in a recent interview that “We weren’t supposed to last ten days! We originally got together for a one off gig and the buggers insisted we carry on…” . Frontman Shaun Doane added “I can honestly say i didn’t think any further than the first two shows we ever did, it was already fun and I hoped it would continue but I was quite prepared to do those two shows at Art in the Gardens and then go back to my musical retirement home!”.

Despite this initial uncertainty, the brothers music has thrived in Sheffield, Yorkshire and beyond over the last decade and now they take their show to Fibbers York on June 1st to celebrate with old and new fans alike. Big Shaun noted recently “I’ve not been to York in a few years but I have a great fondness for the city and every time I’ve been to York, I want to stay for longer, and I hear great great things about Fibbers.” What better way to celebrate a 10th anniversary than in one of Yorkshire most picturesque cities with a rich musical heritage. It’s sure to be a brilliant evening heavily featuring tracks from the bands much loved and now rather extensive back catalog.

Pete Mckee stated recently that “if you want a night out where you can leave your troubles at the door and just have an unadulterated, good sing along, a laugh and even a few beers, then please buy a ticket.” We couldn’t agree more and would recommend people get tickets here:

SINGLE, EP & TOUR NEWS: Another Sky drop ‘The Cracks’, EP ‘Life Was Coming In Through The Blinds’ out June, dates May/June 2019

0

Another Sky have today unveiled their new single “The Cracks”, the second track taken from their upcoming EP “Life Was Coming In Through The Blinds”, due for release on 14th June via Fiction.

“The Cracks” further reveals the band’s talent and appetite for cultural and social commentary, alongside their soaring cinematic soundscapes. Vocalist Catrin Vincent describes the track as “a response to a Leonard Cohen lyric, “the cracks, that’s how the light gets in”. The song is an ode to our generation, one that is more self-aware and being forced to have the difficult conversations that lead to progress and evolution. It’s inspired by the little girl fined by the council for setting up a lemonade stall, the kids suing the US government for global warming, teenagers like Greta Thunburg. It’s about our generation’s unique position of facing extinction.”

EP REVIEW: Moi_6 – ‘Music Made on a Cash Register’

0

While on the face of it Moi_6’s EP may not appear to my sort of thing, unless that is you’ve been keeping up with some of my reviews recently where I say my musical taste seems to be evolving, whereas it is very much my sort of thing. Actually I have what we may might call a liking for this sort of thing from way way when, so I’m not that surprised that I like this.

And this sort of thing is kinda out there experimental techno based. It’s all synthy acid people, it’s also somewhat discerning in places. But I like music to be discerning and do things you just don’t expect, and take listening properly to really appreciate it. One of my helpful friends, who is around the same age as me, described it as sounding like these tech based BBC TV programme themes back in the 80s but with better drum programming. Whether you find that helpful, I guess, depends on whether you remember BBC tech based programmes back in the 80s. He also said that it sounded a little like Kraftwerk in places, and then again like some early Human League tracks, and then again the stuff he ‘lost his shit’ to at raves. This may be more helpful.

The track names are slightly, let’s say, enigmatic – for example one track is called ‘ Mod1(bhdsp Parammodtest)’ and I have not the slightest idea what that means. But ultimately the names of the tracks don’t seem that important, and their mysterious nature just let me concentrate on the sounds. And, in the main, those sounds are – over a lush synth backing we get odd, sometimes startling, synth noises and really clever drum patterns. The surprise is that while the basic structure is that, the variety in the five tracks that make up this EP is compelling.

The EP opener – TX81Z(3) – is rather faster than the other tracks, it has something of a retro electronica sound to it. But, and this key, it doesn’t do the same thing through the whole track, it has these lulls, you can’t really call them dropouts, where you just get a synths and no drum pattern. It’s hypnotic, it pulls you in.

Next up is ‘R.1’ and this is slower and majestic and lusher. Over which a rattling drum pattern appears. That drum pattern disappears, spacier synths come into. Listening to this really loud and on repeat I started to get this pressure building in my head, it seems like it’s about to take off into something huger but doesn’t. ‘S&H.4’ has a more acid feel to it. It’s all strange stabbing sounds over that lush synth backing. The previously mentioned ‘Mod1(bhdsp Parammodtest)’ is the one my helpful friend was referring to when he said it reminded him of, a little you understand. of early Human League. I agree to a certain extent but not completely for over a rather scary synth sounding backing, you get these bleeping synths.

The EP closer ‘Acid:b’ has that rather more acid feel to it again. But it’s all off kilter and warped.

The issue is that with things like this, and I again have my helpful friend to thank for this thought, it’s easy just to sit and be impressed by the technical skill that is so obviously there in this EP, rather than by the music, and the feel, the moods it evokes. The feel in this case, although it has drum and bass patterns, is rather more ambient than you might imagine. You need to get past the ‘well this guy clearly knows his way round a sequencer and a drum machine’ and just think of this as music, and although you could dance to this, to think of it as music that you can actually sit and listen to as well. If you’re not attuned to this type of music that may take repeated listens. Having done that it’s compelling and rewarding.

I’d also recommend checking out the other album on moi_6’s Bandcamp site, it has a slightly different feel but is equally as impressive.

The info

Evolving acid bass and meticulously programmed drums are two main features of Leeds based Acid Techno producer, ‘moi_6’, but beneath that is a hidden layer of beauty, pushing what technology both old and new can do to create some of the weirdest music heard to date.

TOUR NEWS: Through the Seasons: A Year in Morris and Folk Dance

0

The brainchild of brilliant musician Will Pound, one of the finest harmonica players of his generation, Through The Seasons is a celebration of the year in Morris and folk dance. The upcoming UK tour follows on from the success of the inaugural tour last year alongside the release of the acclaimed album of the same name. (FATEA Instrumental Album of 2018).

Joining Pound (a three times ‘Musician of the Year’ nominee at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards) are celebrated storyteller Debs Newbold, Benji Kirkpatrick (Bellowhead, Faustus, The Transports) on bouzouki, banjo, mandolin and vocals, and Ross Grant (Inlay) on violin and vocals, with audio-visual design by David Parker.

The three gifted musicians will showcase beautifully arranged dance tunes and songs which weave seamlessly in and out of the spellbinding storytelling and audio visuals to create a magical seasonal tapestry –which puts audience members at the heart of a summer festival one minute and at a winter fireside rapper sword dance the next.

Will Pound, also a top class melodeon player, is passionate about the 500-year-old tradition of Morris dance. Says Will: “I’ve been involved with morris and folk dance since I was born, as my parents were already part of Chinewrde Morris. So I’ve grown up in a vibrant and fun community of dance and music.

“With Through the Seasons I set out to showcase the strength and diversity of music in morris and folk dance both past and present and capture the zest and excitement.”

The June tour, supported by Arts Council England, kicks off in Worcestershire and finishes in Barton-upon-Humber. Full dates below.

VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: Crows drop video for ‘Wednesday’s Child’, dates April/May 2019

0

Off the back of supporting IDLES on their sell-out UK tour and the release of their acclaimed debut album “Silver Tongues” on Balley Records, Crows release the final video from “Silver Tongues” today in the form of “Wednesday’s Child”. A wide-scale production on the theme of possession, it only accelerates the song’s intensity even further, with the director Sam Taylor saying the following about his involvement:

“After seeing Crows live a few years back, I was instantly taken in by their live show that even those who have witnessed can barely describe. My closest approximation was possession. If as the band and the audience had been taken by the devil and formed one screaming organism. Quite a Tuesday night, but it was clear, once it came time to do a vid for the guys (especially with a track written about the Salem Witch Trials) that this first and visceral experience was going to lead the story.

We were essentially left to it. With the trust of the band and their manager, a long researching and writing process began with 5 or 6 completely different stories and 5 or 6 completely different ways of the telling the stories. Dan Hawkins (who also shot the film) and I couldn’t stop chatting about the state of the West during breaks in writing and whilst going through notes on Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’ the idea snapped into place.

Who doesn’t love a metaphor?”

The band were announced as the latest signing to Balley Records (IDLES, Heavy Lungs, Lice) in January and the first single “Chain Of Being” made Lamacq’s Livener on 6 Music and saw the band featured as Jack Saunder’s Next Wave on his Radio 1 show. The album received almost universally positive reviews on its release last month, and is already onto it’s second pressing of vinyl on Balley Records.

The band will play the following dates on their upcoming headline tour.

April 26th – Limerick, Kasbah Social Club
April 27th – Dublin, The Sound House
April 29th – Glasgow, Blue Arrow
April 30th – Leeds, Oporto
May 1st – Manchester, Yes
May 2nd – London, The Dome
May 4th – Brighton, The Prince Albert

LIVE REVIEW: A Brahms Celebration: Todmorden Choral Society and Todmorden Orchestra – Todmorden Town Hall – 14th April 2019

0

This Brahms tribute included several songs, whose varying moods were well conveyed by the choir. “O süsser Mai” describes being unable to enjoy the spring. In “Im Herbst” the poet is more in tune with autumn. In a similar mood is “Waldesnacht” describing consolation being found in the darkness and peace of the woods. There was also the lovely and powerful “Nänie” lamenting that beautiful people must die but also celebrating their glory. “Alto Rhapsody”, featuring the richly expressive voice of soloist Sophie Dicks, described the suffering of a self-obsessed wanderer, and hoped for divine intervention to help him see his way out.

The concert finished with the St Anthony Chorale (Op 56a). Despite the name, this was for the orchestra alone, and consisted of variations on a theme, with different moods and instrumentation, finishing with the triumphant return of the theme. Antony Brannick conducted throughout.

An evening in which choir and orchestra combined to do Brahms proud.
