EP REVIEW: Home Wrecked – ‘Try What You Want, Just Make Sure It Works’

0

While I am no great fan of pop punk Home Wrecked’s take on the style had me converted. Ben Hinchliffe (drummer in the band) said about this EP that

“I guess our main aim was to just try to write an EP which we all love. We are all into similar bands and music, but at the same time have a lot of different influences. We tried to use this to maybe step a little outside of the typical pop punk style of songs, and maybe a little out of our comfort zone”

and even a cursory listen is going to show that there’s nothing run of the mill about the tracks on the EP.

The EP opener ‘Moving Day’ while obviously rooted in pop punk has these wonderful touches of subtlety that had me hooked. Yep it rocks out but there are these moments where there are clever drums, where suddenly it’s 80’s metal, and where there is this almost funk guitar.

‘Back On The Grid’ is, as far as my limited knowledge can tell, mainly pop punk through and through. Except that there’s this bit where suddenly it goes all indie pop. Sounds like it shouldn’t work but it does people. It’s one of those ‘I really like this, but I haven’t the faintest exactly why I like it, I just do’ things.

The next track up I do know why I really like it. ‘Nothing Like You’ startled me, to be honest it somewhat slightly freaked me out. It’s this rather delicate ballad. One that at times sounds rather country influenced. The song features guest vocals from Christina Rotondo – and boy can she really sing. And it works, it works fantastically. I have grown rather attached to this track, it’s wormed its way into my head. From the rather wonderful guitar intro to the surprisingly heartfelt vocals from Joe, this song is moving. And the parts where Joe and Christina share and swap vocal lines, bloody hell, they work so so well. And the words are great, take some time to really listen.

‘Red Card’ had me guessing, it starts like some US hair metal track (look I rather liked some hair metal back in the day, so this isn’t a bad thing) but it changes into this frankly kick ass pop punk track. And it’s heavy, it has an edge. And listen carefully, there’s all sorts of clever guitar touches.

Quite what the fuck guys ‘Stepping Stone’ has this out and out metal intro. There’s nothing predictable about this track, this thing changes and changes and changes again, there are killer riffs to die for. It even has this rather clever quiet section. Love this track.

The thing with reviewing stuff is that sometimes you find yourself liking stuff you might have passed by because you just don’t like the sort of music the band says it plays. Home Wrecked have me converted to their brand of pop punk, nice one guys.

VIDEO NEWS: Brooders share video for their single ‘LIE’

0

Leeds psych grunge three piece Brooders have shared a rather fabulous video for their single ‘LIE’. The single was released through Come Play With Me on 7” on the 6th April.

“Lie has been a work in progress for a long time” explains the band’s Adam Bairstow, “It’s a culmination of the stresses and pressures that come with love, loss and paranoia all rolled into one brutally honest, twisted, chaotic track.”

We asked our writer Frank what he thought of the track, he said “‘LIE’ is a dense swirl of a track, it’s a trip. With a grinding middle section that thrills. A fantastic piece of work”. With a recommendation like that, get yourself a watch of the video right now.

TOUR NEWS: Peter Kernel announce UK tour dates for May 2018

14.05 The New Adelphi Club, Hull
15.05 Westgarth SC, Middlesbrough
16.05 The Dartmouth Inn, Totnes

New album out now via On The Camper Records

Peter Kernel is a Swiss Canadian post punk band formed in 2006 by graphic designer Aris Bassetti (Swiss) and filmmaker Barbara Lehnhoff (Canadian). The two met in visual communications school in Switzerland and quickly launched the band and their own label On The Camper Records. Now the duo celebrate the release their third album ‘The Size Of The Night’.

Speaking about their forthcoming album, the band said “What is the size of the night? How can we measure the night? The night is a very personal moment. It can be majestic; spent indulged in love and joy or terribly frightening; filled with nightmares and fear. The size of this moment is hidden in the details that shake our bodies and keep our hearts beating.

In this album we took off the darkest and most mysterious part of our persons and transformed it into songs. We don’t have instructions to not make mistakes or not hurt people around us or to love in the most proper manner. We just live. We do good and bad. Sometimes we learn but often we don’t, and simply go ahead doing mistakes. We’re complex. We can act stupid and feel lost inside. We can miss each other yet not talk to each other when we’re together. This album expresses this new consciousness we found ourselves exploring throughout these past months.

There are some very serious songs and others seem surreal, but each one of these creations form The Size Of The Night in it’s greatness and in its darkness. Through this album we’re trying to accept that we can be very sensitive people and at the same time we can be asshole. And that it’s alright.”

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Birds of Chicago ‘Love in Wartime’ out 4th May, May 2018 dates

0

Birds of Chicago have been riding a swell of good mojo in the Americana scene since their inception in late 2012. With their new album, ‘Love in Wartime’ (released 4th May), they are set to both confirm that roots world buzz, and break on through to a much wider audience.

Recorded in Chicago against a backdrop of bewilderment, deep divide and dread, the album is a rock and roll suite with a cinematic sweep. Co-produced with Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), it evokes epic efforts of the 60’s and 70’s, with love as the undeniable through-line.

Built around the chemistry and fire between Allison Russell and JT Nero, and their rock-steady band, BOC tours hard. Russell and Nero played with different bands in the mid-aughts (Po’ Girl and JT and the Clouds) before finding their way to each other. Nero, who writes the bulk of the songs, found himself a transcendent vocal muse in Russell (a powerful writer herself), and the band honed its chops on the road, playing 200 shows a year between 2013-17. All that shaping and sharpening, over so many miles, led them back to Chicago’s Electrical Audio in January of 2017, to begin recording Love in Wartime. “Any act of love is an act of bravery,” says Russell. “We want to give people some good news. And we want them to be able to dance when they hear it.”

LIVE REVIEW: CREATION F J Haydn,  Todmorden Town Hall, 22nd April 2018

0

Todmorden Choral Society and Todmorden Orchestra united with three soloists in a gorgeous performance of Haydn’s oratorio “Creation”, conducted by Antony Brannick.

Eighteenth century music can be very structured and predictable, but in this piece Haydn almost breaks out of the corset.

The lovely voices of soloists Charlotte Trepess, Adam Magee, and Christopher Gascoyne told the story, from the Bible, of God creating the universe, together with the orchestra and choir. The celebratory feel came over, with a dramatic impact when light comes, lyrical descriptions of weather and animal life, and in conclusion a happy Adam and Eve praising their world and its maker.

TOUR NEWS: The Bonnevilles confirm May/June 2018 dates

0

The Bonnevilles are shaking Northern Ireland in a way it hasn’t felt since Van Morrison & Them obliterated Club Rado in 1964 and Stiff Little Fingers blew apart The Trident in 1977! The Bonnevilles don’t so much play punk blues as use it as a springboard to create a completely new genre. And now they release their 4th studio album “Dirty Photographs” with LA based Alive Natural Sound Records.

The Lurgan duo take Mississippi Hill Blues and Punk Rock and mix their own unique dark Northern Irish Punk Blues stew which drew the attention of the fore mentioned Alive Natural Sound which saw them release the award nominated “Arrow Pierce My Heart” on the label in 2016.

The Bonnevilles formed in 2009 and quickly released their debut, and now, legendary album “Good Suits & Fightin’ Boots” on Motor Sounds Records. McGibbon being a blues fan was moved to create The Bonnevilles after a brief time in another duo and being heavily inspired by RL Burnsides “ A Ass Pocket Of Whiskey” and bands like The Soledad Brothers, The Immortal Lee County Killers along with blues heavyweights like Howlin’ Wolf, Robert Johnson, Chess Records etc combined with McMullans heavy metal drumming style the band has become Europe’s top alternative blues act.

Playing the Deep Blues festival in Clarkesdale Mississippi and the legendary Junior’s Juke Joint in Holly Springs in 2015 cemented the bands reputation as the real deal. Now the bands new album “Dirty Photographs” sees the band reach new creative fields, the same dark blues punk stew with added sugar.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Boy Jumps Ship drop ‘Fashion’, tour October/November 2018

0

BOY JUMPS SHIP are back with their biggest and most ambitious single to date ‘Fashion’.

Vocalist Si explains “‘Fashion’ is about not conforming to the social pressures and stereotypes that are thrown at us today, particularly via social media. A lot of younger people are given the impression that everyone’s life is idealistic, and therefore feel pressured to fit in and confirm to what they are shown is the ‘right way’”

Their bold and anthemic new tune was written in Iceland when the band opted for a change of scenery, gatecrashing their bassist, Jonny Rob’s modelling shoot trip. The track was then recorded Berlin’s Jazzanova Studios (Lenny Kravitz, Jason Derulo, Lorde) with producer Fish.

Si continues, ”We went into this recording process wanting to take more risks and push ourselves into new territories. It’s about being true to yourself no matter what, by following the things you are truly passionate about. It’s a positive message about finding your own place in it all, even if it means stepping into the unknown”.

Hailing from the North-East of England, working class lads, BOY JUMPS SHIP have gained a reputation for their energetic, passionate and exuberant live performances up and down the country and around Europe.

After some huge live dates with Don Broco in Europe, the band are set to take the UK by storm, announcing a run of UK headline dates for later this year.

25th Oct – Leeds Key Club
26th Oct – Edinburgh Mash House
27th Oct – Newcastle O2 Academy 2
1st Nov – London Black Heart
2nd Nov – Bristol Louisiana
3rd Nov – Nottingham Rock City Sunday
4th Nov – Birmingham Sunflower Lounge

Having met at college, BOY JUMPS SHIP are a testament to British grassroots rock. Relentlessly gigging the DIY scene in their initial phase, the band proceeded to release EPs Be Good. Be Gracious as well as Lovers & Fighters. Debut album Wake Up followed in 2016, receiving rave reviews. With new material in the works for next year, FASHION is telling of things to come and showcases a natural progression to a more raw, melodic and anthemic soundscape. BOY JUMPS SHIP are more self-assured and determined than they ever have been, 2018 will be their year.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Sons Of Bill ‘Oh God Ma’am’ out 29th June, tour August 2018

0

Central Virginia’s band of brothers SONS OF BILL have announced the release of their new album ‘Oh God Ma’am’ on 29 June on Loose.

The first single taken from the album, ‘Believer/Pretender’ is a “sort of a meditation on continuing to make music in adult life; especially in a superficial cultural and economic climate that continues to devalue the arts”. Lead singer James continues: “There is this Chinese finger trap you can get yourself into in adult life where you’re never quite sure which part of you is still genuine and which part of you has learned to fake it– which part of you plays music just for the love of it, and which part of you just desperately wants to be loved. Especially in an industry town like Nashville where it feels like posturing is half of being an artist.”

‘Oh God Ma’am’, the latest LP from is the band’s most coherent artistic statement to date– subtle, risky, and sonically ambitious. Recorded both in Seattle with west coast indie legend Phil Ek (Shins, Fleet Foxes) and in Nashville with Sean Sullivan (Sturgill Simpson) and mixed by Peter Katis (The National, Interpol) the album shows the Wilson brothers moving beyond the galvanic americana-rock comfort zone of previous efforts, for a more elegant and restrained sound– a darker, and more complexly layered rock record that manages to be the band’s most emotionally intimate and sonically expansive. Insistent, dancey rhythms and dreamy, hook-filled, pyrotechnics abound, creating a deceptively anthemic mood around songs that are in and of themselves intensely introverted.

‘Oh God Ma’am’ is a coming-of-age record for an over-stimulated age– equal parts post-adolescent anxiety and old-soul humility– literate, gorgeous, and darkly contemplative.
