SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: City Calm Down drop ‘Television’, Autumn 2019 UK tour

0

Australia’s CITY CALM DOWN have returned with their new single TELEVISION.

Recorded with producer Burke Reid [Courtney Barnett, The Drones, Julia Jacklin] TELEVISION is a prescient pop anthem for our times and is the Melbourne band’s first new material since the masterful ECHOES IN BLUE album in 2018. That same spirit and drive now finds CITY CALM DOWN hungrier than ever and determined to not repeat themselves on their forthcoming third album, due out later this year on I OH YOU.

Speaking about the track, Jack Bourke from CITY CALM DOWN said: “Television is inspired by the 1976 Sidney Lumet satire Network – an Oscar-winning howl of protest. Four decades on, Network’s bleak vision is more relevant than ever. Network is a dark satire about an anchorman who goes on a series of rants live on air after he loses his wife and finds out he’ll be fired. Even though it was released 40+ years ago, it feels more relevant than ever in the 24 hour news cycle world we live in. It was serendipitous that I stumbled across it the night I wrote Television.

“Although the lyrics touch on the same broad themes as Network, I’m not as deeply cynical about the impact of media in our lives. One of the best opportunities we have is to engage with the abundance of outstanding art that’s being produced. At the same time, there’s a lot of absolute crap, whether in television or other media, and it gets a lot more attention than it deserves. Culturally, this dulls our senses to what’s true and beautiful and we risk becoming more shallow and insular as a result.”

To accompany the new single, CITY CALM DOWN have announced a UK headline tour for September this year as part of their EU tour. Full dates as follows. Tickets on sale now via www.citycalmdown.com

TOUR & ALBUM NEWS: King Zepha tour dates May to September 2019, ‘Northern Soul’ out now

0

Yorkshire based singer, songwriter and producer Sam Thornton, better known by his stage name King Zepha, has had a busy year so far. Shortly after finishing off his new album King Zepha’s ‘Northern Sound’, which was recorded at his 8-track home studio in Leeds, he was signed by Happy People Records and chosen to open the London International Ska Festival at the O2 Academy in London, on the same bill as Georgie Fame and the Jamaican singer Owen Gray, one of the founding fathers of reggae. This was followed by a three week tour of the UK and Ireland, including a headline performance at the Irish International Ska & Reggae Festival.

Sam lives in Leeds and his family come from Brighouse. He cites growing up in the “cultural melting pot” that is West Yorkshire as one of the reasons that his musical tastes are so broad. “Growing up I was exposed to all sorts of music,” he remembers. “My parents are huge fans of live music and they’d take me to watch traditional jazz in Huddersfield, South Asian classical music at Bradford Mela and Jamaican dub and reggae at Leeds Carnival. All of these sounds had a big influence on me and have probably seeped into my own music.” Sam has help realising his music in the form of a 5-piece band, including “honking saxophone, thumping double bass, skanking guitars and raucous 4-part vocal harmonies,” not to be missed!

King Zepha’s Northern Sound is available on CD, 12″ vinyl or to download, from http://kingzepha.bandcamp.com

LIVE REVIEW: Antony and Friends – Todmorden Methodist Church – 18th May 2019

0

The main work for this concert was Messaien’s “Quartet for the End of Time” (leaving out the seventh movement). This complex and powerful work, premiered in a prison camp, featured long swelling notes and jagged rhythms, slow melodies and bursts of notes resembling birdsong. Different parts featured different instruments, and all Antony Brannick’s guests played beautifully. Rachael Gibbons’ clarinet solo had both solemn melody and trills. There was a bluesy feel to the movement played by Will Mace on cello with David Butterworth on steady piano. The tranquil final movement featured David Butterworth again, with Richard Webster on violin. The audience were silent for a while, taking it in, before applauding loudly.

The second half featured more familiar classical music. Antony Brannick on piano gave us an expressive performance of Schumann’s “Waldscenen” (OP 82) about the forest. There were a couple of hearty hunting tunes, loud enough to drive the wildlife away, and pieces with varying moods, including the intriguing “Bird as Prophet”. Finally we had David Butterworth, Will Mace and Richard Webster back again for Haydn’s formal but cheerful piano trio in G major (Hob. XV:25).

LIVE REVIEW: Flash Cassette supported by Huckleberry Harrison, Everyday People & Narcle – 360 Club, Leeds – 17th May 2019

Flash Cassette

Another great line-up from 360 Club, if you weren’t there – and you better have a good excuse – you missed some some great and special sets. As is usual, and I love this, it was a mix of bands – some I’d nether heard of before, one I’d heard of have but not seen and one that I love but have never seen live – so I was really looking forward to the night.

Narcle

Opening up was Narcle. Now Narcle are a band I’ve never heard of before but in seconds I was totally and utterly hooked. They started their set with something soulfully jazzy with lovely tasteful keys and a great sax (yep this band has a sax player). And their singer – sorry I can’t find her name anywhere – had a voice that you could drown in.

While Narcle describe themselves as a soul and funk band – and yes, that’s there – to my ears at least their sound is really heavy on jazz. And it’s that late-night mellow vibed jazz. They throw in what sounds like improvisation and it’s a great thing.

The playing is fantastic, this is band – and please forgive this – really know there chops. Musically I tried in vain to identify the one element that makes it but all of the musicians are great.

And as their set went on it just got better and better. That mellow and chilled sound was mesmerising. And when the band take off and ramp it up it’s joyous.

Very seldom do a band leave me both chilled and excited, Narcle did that. Go see this band people, they’re totally coooool man.

Everyday People

Everyday People are one of my favourite bands, I just love what they do. But up until then I’d never actually managed to see them live. It is a special set, a stripped down – voice, guitar and keyboards – set for, as Maeve announces, they have lost two band members. Where they ‘lost’ them it’s not made clear, perhaps in one of those big superstores on a big shopping trip but this isn’t that important.

Somehow, and I’m going from the recorded material here, the sparseness adds, rather than taking away, from the songs. It allows Maeve’s voice to stand-out and it is the most wonderful voice. And it allows the songs to shine through, it shows that these are songs with substance, they don’t need those extra layers, they don’t lose their power and impact. This is a joy.

And, and you gotta admire this, they play three new songs that are due to released over the summer, and they are sounding so so good. I’ll be holding my breath.

But it is their cover of ‘Build Me Up Buttercup’ that is the first song that really has me almost swooning, it is a lovely thing, a huge smile inducing thing. I’m assuming, from the fact that the crowd joins in, that this is a feature of their sets.

It is with their final song that I am left totally wiped out. Of their releases ‘Princess Blues’ is my favourite but in that stripped down form it almost made me lose it, I even shed a small tear. That voice, that guitar break, had an impact. It was almost too beautiful for words, and I’m struggling to tell you just how good it was. Maybe, just maybe, you needed to be there. If you weren’t there you’ll just never going to understand.

Huckleberry Harrison

Huckleberry Harrison describe themselves as being ‘alternative’ but to my ears there’s a whole heap of indie. And while being objective (reviewers have to be objective sometimes) it’s good, it more than good. The playing is great, the songs are clever and sometimes witty in that indie way. But on the night, and perhaps this was because of how I’d been left after Everyday People’s set, it just didn’t grab me, it didn’t connect with my music lover’s head. Looking around the room I was very much in a minority so it’s a case of ‘just not for me on the night’. Another time, another place I think I may have felt very differently.

Flash Cassette

Flash Cassette are one of those bands where, when people try and tell you what they do, they just describe as a jaw dropping-ly good. So let’s, for those of you who haven’t seen or heard of them before, describe the set-up. There are two of them, they both have keyboards and one also plays guitar. This makes what they do doubly impressive for their sound is huge. And what they, at least superficially, is play stuff that is heavily influenced by 80s EDM. One track borrows sounds from a huge heap of 80s dance tracks. But while their sound appears to be influenced by 80s’ music, it’s harder, there are elements of hip-hop, of harder EDM, of rock.

At times, and I’m old even to remember them, it reminds me vaguely of those Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer tracks from back in the 80s – it’s that keyboard and guitar thing – but not in a ‘they’re just recycling that’ sort of way, in an influence way.

Their set is the most strangely astounding thing I’ve heard in a long time. On the face of it is sounds as though it’s going to be soulless, just sequenced to hell. But it isn’t, a lot of this is played live and it sounds organic. It connects with your head – you could just stand there and be impressed by the skill and technique – but it also connects with your soul and, more importantly, your dancing feet. There was a lot of wild dancing going on.

Look people just go see this band, experience what they do, everybody should experience Flash Cassette at least once in their life.

SINGLE REVIEW: The Racketeers – ‘No Show’

0

I was impressed by the last single from The Racketeers I reviewed – ‘Glitter’ so I was keen to see whether their latest release matched up to the high standard that set.

It did but it wasn’t what I was expecting at all after ‘Glitter’ for this is more of a big indie-pop/indie-rock ballad, it’s not at all a fuzzed up blast of garage. And yes it has some glorious guitar – which bursts out of the song in a gorgeously splendid way – but actually for the majority of the track it’s actually quite a gentle thing that I found unexpectedly moving. It’s really quite a sad song, with great lyrics. And those lyrics kind of get into your head – by the second time I listened to it, I was bursting into sing-a-long mode. It is, as well as being moving, hugely earwormly.

It’s one of those ‘big tracks’ that I can imagine people hearing live and doing that phone up in the air thing. I get why people do that by the way, but I have rather fond memories of people holding up lighters, there’s something about naked flames.

What this track shows is that The Racketeers are no one trick pony which, dear readers, is a good thing. A band that can different things in different styles is a great great thing. ‘No Show’ is absolutely fantastic. And at the end of the preview stream somebody asks ‘How was that?’, the answer is that that was brilliant.

The info

The Racketeers are a garage rock act from Leeds. Combining bright, pop – inspired vocal harmonies with fuzzy, biting guitar hooks, the music draws influences from 60s folk rock, Britpop and modern alternative indie to create a unique and memorable sound.

Band Members:

Joe Mosley – Guitar and vocals
Joe Dean – Guitar and vocals
Alex Scrowther – Bass
Mike Johansson – Drums

The Racketeers play This Feeling in Leeds on 18th May where they’re be promoting ths single.

ALBUM & SINGLE NEWS: Crushed Beaks album ‘The Other Room’ out 9th August, single ‘Honesty Box’ out now

0

It’s been four years since south London-based Crushed Beaks released their debut album, ‘Scatter’, but with new album ‘The Other Room’, the band return in a confident mood. The vocals are more direct, lyrics more incisive and the overall theme of the album more confrontational. However, this confidence shouldn’t be mistaken for bravado, there is subtlety and introspection running through the album, even in the more direct tracks.

‘Honesty Box’ is the lead single from ‘The Other Room’, an instant and direct blast which bursts into life with full force before Matt Poile’s vocal soars in with opening line: “I got ahead of myself, it’s only a dream that I had”. The track will be released digitally on 17th May.

LISTEN/BUY

‘The Other Room’ will be released on 2 special vinyl editions, one a clear vinyl with orange splatter, the other a transparent orange vinyl. 150 copies of each are available to order from www.cluerecords.com.

Never ones to rush into things, the songs for the new album were written in a windowless studio in east London over the course of about two years. “I lost track of time” Poile says. “It was easy to feel completely cut off and unselfconscious about what I was doing because the room had this huge metal door and thick concrete walls.” He spent over a year recording and refining demos alone before bringing bass player Scott Bowley and new drummer Tim Watkins back into the fold to work out how to play the songs live.

Having caught the ear of producer Matt Peel (Eagulls, Menace Beach) at a Halloween show with Metz and Mitski, the band relocated to his studio, The Nave, in a converted church in Leeds to record the new album over a two-week stretch. Peel produced, mixed and mastered the record. While their debut was created with minimal equipment, ‘The Other Room’ finds the band making full use of the studio’s wealth of analogue gear. “We were like kids in a candy store, we went from having one amp and a couple of pedals to being in this insanely well-kitted out space” says guitar player and singer Matt Poile. The result is a huge step forward for the band – the hooks hit harder and the fuzz gets twisted into wilder new shapes.

Tour dates in support of ‘The Other Room’ will be announced in early summer.

The band are made up of Matt Poile (vocals and guitar), Scott Bowley (bass) and Tim Watkins (drums), who joined shortly after the release of their debut album. They began life as a two-piece in 2011 – Matt and previous drummer Alex Morris having known each other from secondary school and university. They formed after some of Matt’s bedroom demos received buzz online, eventually recruiting Scott to flesh out their sound. They released their debut through Moshi Moshi

VIDEO NEWS: Sinead Campbell and Postculture drop video for joint single ‘Back to Basics’

0

Yorkshire Entertainment Awards Best Female Artist finalist, SINEAD CAMPBELL and
Holmfirth based trio POSTCULTURE, two of West Yorkshire’s “hottest upcoming
talents”, have merged sounds to create this fresh and authentic single ‘Back to Basics’,
their second collaboration since meeting on the bill at a Sheffield Black Music
Matters show in 2017. The single was released on Monday 15th April.

“’Back to Basics’ is in some form a rejection to the current fast paced system that
we find ourselves seemingly trapped in. An outcry for re-connection, oneness and to
simplify our lives somewhat: taking away all the information, the material things
and connect to what truly matters: Love, human connection and consciousness.
With the rise of mental health issues, the destruction of the Earth and tensions here
in the UK around Brexit, ‘Back to Basics’ feels relevant.”

The video amplifies the importance of nature and true human connection, shot and
directed by Anarchy Cinema around Bradford and the Yorkshire Countryside, it
depicts 4 new age wanderers rejecting the system and finding solace in the simple
things: ‘Back to Basics’.

LIVE REVIEW: Todmorden Folk Festival – 3rd-5th May 2019

0

Multiculturalism is alive and well and living in Todmorden. So is the English folk tradition. They flourish together, as shown by the Todmorden Folk Festival.

To mention just some of the great acts, Janet Russell’s satirical performance included comic songs about both rail and road travel. The Coffee 22 cafe offered singer Matt Besford and also a view of dance groups performing across the road: what is more, his performance of “I’m a Believer” inspired two women in the cafe, who by their gorgeous costumes were from “400 Roses”, to dance.

The fabulous group “Soma” performed twice, at the Methodist Church and at Site Pizziera. Their repertoire includes a combination of a grim Scots song about two ravens with a more lyrical Ukrainian song about the forest.

The stupendous Red Hippo began their set with the old Irish tune “Sheebeg and Sheemore”, which included a whistle and sousaphone contest.

The performers included two groups of able young musicians, the fresh and versatile Orladh and Leo, and Heather, actually a group of three, who included an enticing performance of “Wild Mountain Thyme”.

Sheelanagig, with the energy of a whirlwind, were the ideal act to close a Saturday night concert. People were dancing in the aisles at the Unitarian Church.

A lot of the action was outdoors, the weather being kind. Your reviewer enjoyed the beautiful voice of Sarah Yaseen, whose set included “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen, and danced with the lively Jamaican Folk Ensemble, before leaving to catch a lovely join-in set by She Shanties. There was just time to return for a couple of lively tracks from DJ Mayeva.

Martin Simpson’s moving act included memories of other folk singers, including the wonderful Roy Bailey, who was his father in law. He also sang a song inspired by Ken Small, who discovered a sad secret from World War II at Slapton Sands. His encore was “The Times They Are A Changing”. Maybe he’s right.

NEWS FOR BANDS & ARTISTS: Live music agency Alive Network to hold auditions in Leeds

0

Alive Network, the UK’s most successful live music agency, behind the UK’s biggest private event bands, has announced auditions in Leeds.

Aimed at local cover bands and original artists, the agency hopes to recruit more regional musicians to take advantage of work in the area.

Last year, Alive helped UK musicians earn £10 million, with around £500k worth of wedding, private and corporate events booked in Yorkshire.

“We want gigs in the North to go to local bands – and so do our clients, “ says Alive founder Dave Bevan. “But we just don’t have enough artists based here to meet demand.”

“Clients don’t want to have to book a band in London if they can have homegrown talent. We’re keen to find that talent, and ensure that local opportunities go to local musicians.”

As well as professional cover bands, original bands are also being encouraged to apply.

“Private events can be a lucrative source of income for musicians. We work with artists that tour with Beyonce, JT, Rag N Bone Man, Stormzy – the list goes on – as well as high-level session musicians, and recording artists,” explains Dave.

“For all of them, commercial work is just one part of a varied music career. Many rely on private events to fund their passion projects, as it’s one of the industry’s most reliable ways to make money.”

Leeds band Midnight Train joined Alive after applying in 2018. Already a professional band working in private events, they’ve enjoyed a career boost since joining the agency.

Says singer Tom, “It’s been a hugely positive experience for us. In the last 6 months, we’ve gained a large number of bookings and a chance to further our career as musicians. We can’t thank Alive enough for their support and professional approach.

“One of my personal highlights has been getting our first international gig, something we’ve wanted to do for a long time!

“We can’t wait to see where the future takes us.”

Bands that successfully audition will join Alive Network at no cost, and become part of the UK’s most successful booking agency, which was founded by musicians in 1999.

Auditions will take place at Pirate Studios in Leeds, on Thursday 6 June, 2019.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: New Model Army’s ‘From Here’ released August 2019, dates October/November 2019

0

In October 1980 three musicians took to the stage in their hometown of Bradford to play a gig under the name New Model Army. Led by frontman and songwriter Justin Sullivan, this was the start of a remarkable journey which, almost 40 years on, has seen New Model Army develop a fervent worldwide fanbase and reach multiple milestones of both creative and commercial success.

Members have changed over the years and musical styles have evolved but at the heart of the band Justin has remained, along with a distinct and sincere belief in the power of music to inspire and effect change on a personal and political scale, both locally and globally. With the band’s hugely acclaimed albums Between Dog And Wolf (2013) and Winter (2016) bringing renewed critical appreciation, chart success and an ever-growing audience of new fans to join the legion of faithful devotees, New Model Army return in 2019 with one of the finest records of their career.

From Here was recorded earlier this year on the tiny Norwegian island of Giske at the beautiful Ocean Sound Recordings studio and reflects the spectacular isolation of that environment yet has profound messages for the world we all live in and the times we are experiencing.

“We all have different lives and different tastes in almost everything, including music”, say the band. “One thing we have in common is the love of bleak, open, cold, rugged landscapes – water, snow, rock. So this was the perfect place for us to work on something collectively – at all times while we were working, we could look up and see the sky, the sea and melting snow on the mountains, all in a constant state of change. So this album has a feel that is different to our other albums, but it still contains all the elements that characterise our peculiarly unidentifiable music – perhaps even more than ever. And ‘From Here’ was an obvious title. The record belongs to a very special place and a particular time – what is happening in the world, where we are as a band and where we are as people.”

The album will be released on August 23rd via EarMusic, ahead of a 38-date UK & European tour later this year which takes in 10 countries.

From Here will be available as a CD Hardcover Mediabook, Double 180g-Vinyl Gatefold and Digital. A Strictly Limited 2LP Splattered Vinyl-Edition, a Limited 7” Vinyl Single and various bundles will be available via an exclusive direct to consumer web shop: newmodelarmy.tmstor.es
