LIVE REVIEW: Anti-fracking event, The old Co-op Todmorden 4th August 2018

0

This was a relaxed event with vegan food, speakers and music, and though not a concert as such it did feature several local musicians.

First on were the Moondalas. Although at times the backing drowned out the lyrics, these versatile musicians offered good harmony singing, lively rhythms, and enticing tunes.
Almighty Sound, a combination of two guitars, drum and saxophone, played a vigorous set including a song about CCTV: “You don’t need to worry if you ain’t done nothing wrong.”
Singer Kate Redford sang sometimes with guitar and sometimes duetting with herself using a wonder of technology of whose name your reviewer is ignorant. She had a strong clear voice and sang with passion. Her set included an ominous folk song, “Doomsday”.

The Homies gave an effective set, including some old favourites like “Woodstock”.
Luna Calling, three women sometimes with instruments and sometimes unaccompanied, had effectively blended voices. Their songs had messages and beautiful melodies.

For readers interested in the fracking issue, Frack Free Hebden Bridge has a Facebook page and other local groups can be found on the frack-off.org.uk website.

LIVE REVIEW: Antony and friends, Central Methodist Church, Todmorden, 21st July 2018

0

This concert featured additional players Bob Shaw on French horn and Tim Benjamin on piano and violin, and a first performance of Tim Benjamin’s composition, “The Invisible Man”.

There were also pieces by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Elgar, and less well known composers. Antony Brannick on piano gave us a warm and sensuous “Nocturno” (op 7) by Franz Strauss.

Bob Shaw and Tim Benjamin on piano gave the premiere of “The Invisible Man”, inspired by a sculpture of a homeless man sleeping on the pavement. This was an innovative piece, with contrasting parts for the two musicians, which conveyed a sense of loneliness and obscurity, expressed especially in the fadeout ending.

ALBUM REVIEW: shambolic – ‘World Torn Apart’

0

shambolic aren’t messing around, for this is rock, rock that is raw, and fucking kicks arse. It’s rock with a huge dose of punk and post-punk attitude. But it’s a set of songs that really deserve a closer listen.

Usually with albums I do a highlights review, picking my standout tracks but this is very very difficult as there isn’t one track that strikes you as filler material, it’s all good. In fact it’s all very good. So let’s kick off with some sort of attempt to describe the sound. It is, as I said, rock. Yep there is the bass pulse, pounding drums and searing swirling guitar of post-punk but it’s harder, it’s punkier.

Album opener ‘Resurrection Time’ sets the scene. It’s all hard guitars, drums that pound, vocals that shout, that growl. It’s relentless. It has those post-punk dropouts – you know when the guitars dropout leaving bass, drums and vocals. It has these bits that sound a bit like Stiff Little Fingers.

‘Collateral Damage’ sounds more post-punk. It soars. But listen closely and you start to hear the words, and these are words to listen to, to hear, to think about. And while you’re at it, just listen to that guitar for it is wonderful. And now it goes dark, for ‘Stones’ is one of those oh so epic post-punk tracks that drags you down, way down in the dark.

‘Gallows Yard’ is heavy, frankly I’ve heard metal bands that aren’t as heavy as this. The guitars roar. The vocals shout. There are guitar sounds that scare me, so dirty are they. And then ‘Imploding Sun’. This is more post-punk, it has that swirl, that guitar that makes you want to spin. A bass that pulses. I challenge anyone not to be up and throw shapes the moment this thing starts.

And then there is ‘Frozen Hill’, something that is punky, it’s heavy, it’s raucous, it’s fast, it just beats it’s way into your head and leaves you breathless. ‘Treason’ is just as fast but it’s polished, it’s not as raw.

And onto one of my favourite tracks ‘Girl On Drugs’. This is a maelstrom of sound, a swirling sonic attack. And those vocals, growly, at the edge of what singing is. It has the most infectuous bass line. It does the quiet loud thing bursting out in the most glorious sound. ‘Gotta Buy A Gun’ is another favourite. I love that choppy guitar sound and the sudden and surprising shouted chorus. And the words of this are great.

Album closer ‘Summer Time’ is closer to punk, it has that choppy guitar riff thing going on. A chorus that is horribly catchy. But there’s a tune, a tune you can hum, honest.

The thing about this album is that while a cursory listen may leave you thinking ‘well that’s a bit of a noisy blast’, and on one level it is, you could listen to it and really like it just for that raucous punky/post-punk rock thing. I did when I listened to it the first time but a closer listen will throw up the, what shall we call it, subtle touches of playing and arrangements for shambolic can really play. And it’ll start you really paying closer attention to the words which really deserve closer listening.

The info

shambolic was formed in the mid 1990’s in the north of England out of the ashes of various post punk guitar bands. The line up has remained unchanged since then: Jonathan Wakefield – Guitar, Pete Dukes – Bass & Vocals, Matt Washington – Drums, Richard Heeley – Vocals & Guitar.

Brought up on politically charged, socially aware guitar music, shambolic keep the faith in their song writing, serving up barbed slices of angry rock and roll.

Not to be mixed up with a constant flow of wannabe’s nicking their name, shambolic have maintained their no-nonsense approach to their artform, reflecting the shambolic nature of the world we all live in.

With several CD releases under their belts, this year saw the completion & launch of ‘World Torn Apart’ which is shambolic’s first full studio album. This recording session has captured the essence of the band with blistering accuracy. It delivers 12 sharply focused tracks mirroring some of the more unpalatable aspects of our troubled lives.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: The Blinders drop video for new single ‘Brave New World’, October/November 2018 tour, festival dates

0

THE BLINDERS have unveiled the video for new single ‘Brave New World’, a coruscating anthem about the distorting impact of hyper-capitalism, referencing everything from Trump’s Presidency to Aldous Huxley.

The hotly tipped Manchester-based trio were recently announced as the headliners of the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading (Aug 24) and Leeds Festivals (Aug 26). They will also headline the Tim Peaks stage at Festival No.6 on September 9th, and will embark on a 22-date UK headline tour throughout October and November.

‘Brave New World’ is taken from The Blinders debut album ‘Columbia’, which will be released September 21st and is available to pre-order. The album also includes the singles ‘L’Etat C’Est Moi’ and ‘Gotta Get Through’.

The striking cover of ‘Columbia’ pictures singer/guitarist Thomas Haywood in the tribal warpaint he wears for live shows, where he assumes the fearless persona of Johnny Dream. Produced by Gavin Monaghan (Editors, The Sherlocks, Goldblade), the album sees 21 year-old childhood friends Haywood (vocals, guitar), Charlie McGough (bass) and Matt Neale (drums) follow Johnny Dream on his spiritual awakening, from the coruscating swagger of the opening ‘Gotta Get Through’ to the raw, beautiful and ultimately redemptive finale ‘Orbit (Salmon Of Alaska)’. The result is a bracingly thrilling debut which firmly places The Blinders at the vanguard of a new generation of politically engaged British guitar bands

Growing up in Doncaster, the trio were originally inspired by local heroes Arctic Monkeys, though ‘Columbia’ was inspired as much by literary touchstones such as George Orwell and Jack Kerouac as much as their musical influences, who include Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Kanye West and The Wytches.

The Blinders have been picking up specialist radio support since their first DIY releases from the likes of Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and Daniel P Carter, Radio X’s John Kennedy, and 6Music’s Chris Hawkins and Steve Lamacq, who recently had the band on his show for a BBC Music Introducing Session.

SINGLE NEWS: Hadderdash drop ‘What Do We Know’ video single

0

Pushing forward with the 2nd release from their ‘Morning After The Madness’ EP, Hadderdash unveil their ‘What Do We Know’ official video single.

With their previous track ‘Like A Lover’ parading their ability to conjure up accessible pop-soaked alt-rock ; ‘What Do We Know’ ramps up the intensity with the hard-hitting modern rock leanings akin to Don Broco, Twin Atlantic and Deaf Havana. Confirmed for release on 25th Oct 2018, the ‘Morning After The Madness’ EP is a record that builds upon the bands early promise and takes their melodic impulses into much more ambitious terrains.

Habberdash members Kriss Stainton (Vocals), Hayden Marshall (Bass), Ashley Houlden (Guitar) and Andrew Holland (Drums) will be launching their EP with a headline show at Diamond in Doncaster (UK) on 25th October.

CAMPAIGN NEWS: After 4-Year Campaign Agent of Change is Here

0

It finally happened. After four solid years of campaigning by Music Venue Trust, Agent of Change entered into UK planning advice in the National Planning Policy Framework on 24 July.

The relevant guidance features at paragraph 182, which reads:

182. Planning policies and decisions should ensure that new development can be integrated effectively with existing businesses and community facilities (such as places of worship, pubs, music venues and sports clubs). Existing businesses and facilities should not have unreasonable restrictions placed on them as a result of development permitted after they were established. Where the operation of an existing business or community facility could have a significant adverse effect on new development (including changes of use) in its vicinity, the applicant (or ‘agent of change’) should be required to provide suitable mitigation before the development has been completed.

What This Means: England

If you are a music venue in England threatened by development, the responsibility to protect you from negative outcomes, whether they are to your licence, trading hours, normal operation, future noise complaints now falls to the developer.

During the planning process, Music Venue Trust can support your venue to ensure that your local council insists that the developer meets his obligations as the Agent of Change. This protection is in place now for any planning application that has not already been granted. If your venue has a development happening anywhere near you, contact them through the Emergency Response service and they can help you to access all the protection you need.

This latest addition to the NPPF sits alongside previous victories for MVT in asking government to change legislation to balance out the planning process – a reminder that Permitted Development Right (by which an office can be converted to a residence without the planning application process) does NOT apply where a music venue is impacted. The full planning process always applies where a Grassroots Music Venue’s future is threatened, and it is always the developer that has the responsibility to manage the impact on your venue.

It is the intention of the NPPF that no Grassroots Music Venue in England will be closed by development ever again.

What This Means: Wales

Welsh Government published their latest draft of their Noise and Soundscape action plan 2018-2023 on 26 July. On behalf of Music Venue Trust, Jon Fox submitted extensive advice to the first draft, and this latest version has picked up on most of Jon’s submissions. Section 4.3 commits Wales to adopting Agent of Change in a manner that explicitly protects Grassroots Music Venues.

What This Means: Scotland

The Chief Planner for Scotland wrote to all local authorities on 16 February to ask them to adopt Agent of Change.

The Planning Scotland Bill completed Stage 1 on 29 May 2018. Music Venue Trust is working with Scottish Government to ensure Agent of Change becomes part of the new Planning Bill. As a minimum, they would expect an equality of protection with that enjoyed by Welsh and English venues – current conversations indicate Scotland may be prepared to do much more.

SINGLE REVIEW: Casino Rockets – ‘River’

0

‘River’ is one of those things that on the one hand you might be thinking ‘well that’s a pleasant enough, well written, well played sort of track, in a sort of AOR-ish sort of way’ but on the other, and you need to take more than a superficial listen – well I did anyway – you find yourself thinking ‘bloody hell there’s a lot going on in that track, that’s a bit of a slowburner’ and by the third listen you’re quietly grooving along to it’s slow groove.

So what’s to like about ‘River’? Actually there is a lot. The thing, strangely, that first got me listening that bit closer is the bass. The bass line on this is languid, it just quietly sets up up a foundation. The next thing is the vocals. I actually have quite a thing about those understated sort of vaguely prog rock, sort of country rock vocals. And this track has that. And I love the guitar on this, it just does something simple really well. And where it does break out, it doesn’t freak out, it doesn’t get hugely loud, there’s just a repeating guitar motif.

And the big thing that this track has is that actually it’s simple, there’s no over-complicated instrumentation, there’s not huge amounts of layered sounds. It’s just the adding together of simple lines into something that’s more than the sum of it’s parts.

By the fourth listen I started to search for influences, for things that I could say well it sounds a little like. But the list just so large it got very silly. The vocals and the vocal melody is a little Crosby, Stills and Nash, some of the instrumentation reminds me of those sort of melodic prog bands – say Camel, and there are hints of 80s rock – for some reason there’s a nagging thing in my head that keeps saying It Bites, may be way off there if I’m honest.

But what I really like when it comes down to it, is that it doesn’t get loud, it just just sort of hovers around quietly understated. But it doesn’t need to be hugely dynamic, do the quiet, loud, quiet, loud thing to be effective. Actually it’s more than just effective, you find this thing getting under your skin, it just feels calm and soothing.

I could be accused of always championing bands and artists that take stuff from all sorts of places and cooking up their own sounds – to steal a phrase here from a Facebook Page I follow ‘non-genre specific’ music – and I do like that sort of music a lot. But sometimes what you need is something that, while it doesn’t break new musical ground, is just good well written, well played music. ‘River’ is being added to that playlist.

Look ‘River’ is just lovely, it creeps up on you, it slowburns its way into your head. You just need to give it a chance to do that.
