The latest Kicklips single ‘TV Girl’ is more raucous, more punky than the previous two singles I’ve reviewed. It sounds like nothing less than a punk single from back in the day. It’s also longer than the previous two singles, don’t know why I mentioned that, seemed important to say it.
It’s sort of lofi punky, it sounds like it was recorded on some sort of home studio – I’m guessing it wasn’t but it has that feel. Hints of Buzzcocks is what I got, and it’s only a hint people.
It opens with a bass riff, and then we’re into it. It blasts along at the most manic pace. The only let up being right at the end, and then there’s a sort of guitar break-ish sort of thing. As I’d expect from The Kicklips the lyrics are great and yep you can actually hear them, something I really like.
The Kicklips do it again, this the most fantastic blast.
The single is available on the usual streaming and download sites.
The info
The Kicklips (Beck Shillito (vox/bass/songwriter) Mo Ghani (Guitar) and Dan Siddall (Drums)) are one of Sheffield’s most fresh indie rocknroll bands on the scene. Describing themselves as ‘Garage Rocknroll,’ the band started making music together in mid-2017.
Working with Arctic Monkeys producer Alan Smyth of 2fly Studios in Sheffield, the guys recorded their first 3 singles (Hillywood, She’s Got Me and Rose Tinted Kinda Way) in April 2017, releasing them shortly after.
The Kicklips have since gone on to play with bands such as SHEAFS and Hands Off Gretel, as well as making the lineup on festivals such as Tramlines, YNot and Mosfest.
NOVO AMOR, aka Ali Lacey, has unveiled a remarkable and poignant video for the title track from his anticipated debut album ‘Birthplace’, set for release on 19th October 2018 via AllPoints. The announcement arrives as Novo Amor outlines plans for a UK tour in October.
The video highlights the monolithic problem of plastic in our oceans and was shot in Komodo and Bali, Indonesia, with production duo Sil and Jorik who previously worked with Novo Amor and his collaborator Ed Tullett on the emotional and cinematic video for their track ‘Terraform’.
Sil and Jorik shared their thoughts on the concept behind the film: “We want to make films about stories that matter, especially when those in disadvantage can’t speak for themselves. The pollution of our oceans is one of the most important stories of our time. They are under attack by a rapidly growing tumour of plastic waste for which we are responsible. We’ve been exploring ways to make a video that touches on this topic for a while, and when we heard Ali’s music the specific idea came to us almost in a flash.”
World-renowned freediver Michael Board stars as the character of humanity in the video. He performed over 250 freedives during the shoot which involved the crew spending 35 hours underwater. Board appears alongside a 13-metre bamboo humpbacked whale sculpture, covered in plastic that was collected by local children in return for schoolbooks as part of an environmental initiative started by a local primary school.
Sil and Jorik continue: “On the last day of filming the whale, we disassembled it and took it out of the water. We removed all the plastic and nets and transported the segments back to the mountain village where it was created. Here, the builders will add extra, woven bamboo to replace the plastic. Soon, it will find its final resting place on a waterfall near the village where it will become a permanent tourist attraction with a water fountain shooting from its mouth.’’
Ali Lacey himself adds: “The presence of plastic waste littering our oceans is not a new issue, but it’s an issue that has been worsening for years and is something that we can and should be addressing. The problem is not only a threat to marine life, but to the entire food chain, our whole ecosystem. When something impacts wildlife in such a profound way, we can expect it to impact upon us. The problems are manifold, the repercussions shocking, but there are ways in which we can raise awareness of such an urgent issue, and counter it.”
Working from this home studio, Novo Amor has received acclaim for a catalogue of beautiful and melancholic songs which have the ability to effortlessly transport the listener to another realm. On ‘Birthplace’, the sounds of his home bleed in – the distant chatter of a party across the street, Bonfire Night fireworks, the seagulls that congregate on the building site next door. Even the sound of the late-night recording hours Lacey kept to avoid the sounds of construction seem to make their presence felt: “I think there’s something calming about working at night,” he says. “You can focus on smaller details and sounds.”
“Birthplace, as a song, represents change, the release of an attachment to something that defines your character. It’s a theme that inadvertently manifested during the making of the record. The birth of Novo Amor was just me ‘emigrating’ from myself in a way; a departure in the wake of defeat. I’ve always been inspired by sudden changes and movements in my life, and I’ve felt that the creation of this record has been a further articulation of this. This ‘emigration from self’ is now felt and expressed more as a landing, a ‘becoming of self’, a joyous but slightly skewed look back at the past.”
The songs cover many themes, thoughts, ideas – ‘Oh, Round Lake’ revisits ‘Woodgate’, ‘Repeat Until Death’ deals with friends experiencing drug addiction, ‘Seneca’ is rooted in the story of a town in Nebraska that tore itself apart over a dispute over how many horses might be kept in a yard. “But no matter what each individual song is about there’s this sombre conflict across the record,” Lacey says. “It contradicts the happiness with waking up every morning another day older, another day further away from your past.”
Novo Amor will introduce audiences to ‘Birthplace’ with a lengthy UK and European headline tour this Autumn. Tickets for all dates on sale now and selling fast, the Union Chapel show in London on 22nd October is already sold out and to keep up with demand a second night has been added at the historic venue for 23rd October.

The breaking talent additions include, Imi, Kadija Kamara, Little Grace, Polo, Saint Petersburg, The Golden Age of TV and Universal Tree. These complete the lineup for the milestone festival that features its biggest lineup to date including Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Craig David’s TS5, Clean Bandit, Blossoms, De La Soul, Milburn, Jake Bugg, Shed Seven, Everything Everything, Tokio Myers, Stefflon Don and Mystery Jets and many more.
Supporting local and emerging talent has always been key to the Tramlines Festival ethos, and today it remains as important as ever at the 10th anniversary event. The linup already features Sheffield’s finest homebrewed talent such as Reverend and The Makers, Milburn, High Hazels, Bang Bang Romeo and comedic songwriter, John Shuttleworth. Thanks to the Apply To Play Scheme, these are now joined by a full spectrum of Sheffield’s hottest emerging acts.
Universal Tree is a brand new band fronted by legendary Sheffield vocalist, Steve Edwards. Steve achieved big hits in the dance scene with collaborations with Cassius, Bob Sinclar and Axwell, and was the frontman for Lords of the Flatbush – a collaboration with former Arctic Monkey, Andy Nicholson, and Louis Carnall of Milburn. His new Universal Tree project draws influence from psychedelia, soul, funk and blaxploitation films and will be the perfect way to welcome in Sunday on the Main Stage at Tramlines.
Also repping Sheffield in this announcement are St Petersburg. Another recent formation (they were previously known as The Ratells), this group have some serious momentum, their first show sold out over 1,000 tickets in just 4 minutes. Check them out on Friday afternoon at Tramlines to see what the fuss is all about!
Polo
Venturing a little further north from West Yorkshire, Leeds will also be represented at the festival with two standout bands. Three-piece outfit, Polo, who won the hotly contested PRS ‘Women Make Music’ grant, have been selected to play at Tramlines for their unique ‘sexy indie electronica’ sound. They are joined by The Golden Age of TV whose ‘razor sharp and perfectly crafted alternative indie-pop’ has already won support from BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, Radio X and many more.
Imi
Also hailing from Leeds is Imi, a female solo artist who mixes dark brooding synths with her own soaring vocals described as ‘rich and luxurious’ by Electronic North.
Kadija Kamara
Showcasing hot new talent from further afield comes London-based performer, Kadija Kamara, with her totally unique ‘alt soul’ style that includes 60’s and 70’s analogue sounds. She has won the MTV Iggy Artist of the Week poll and been funded by PRS for Music. Her collaborations include Joey Negro and Zed Bias of the dance music elite, and she currently holds down a residency at a popular North London music venue, The Finsbury.
Little Grace
The final addition chosen from the Apply to Play acts is Little Grace. This trio have a modern yet nostalgic sound, merging Motown, 80’s synth pop and post-2000’s electronic R&B and have appeared on Robin Schulz’s LP, ‘Uncovered’. Find them at Tramlines on the Library Stage on Saturday, alongside a mix of other contemporary and emerging stars.
Tickets for the 10th Tramlines Festival have been selling fast. They’re now on sixth release costing £79 plus booking fee for a weekend ticket, covering all three days and are available from www.tramlines.org.uk. Keep an eye out for further announcements by following Tramlines on social ‘@tramlines’.

The Winter Passing have always fearlessly followed their own path, an approach fueled by their distinctly collaborative nature. Every member brings a unique set of skills, influences, and perspectives that coalesce into a sound that is difficult to categorize but easy to love. On their fittingly titled new EP, Double Exposure, the Irish quartet take this approach to a new level, expertly layering their many inspirations for the sake of one goal: to create music that moves listeners.
On their debut LP, 2015’s A Different Space of Mind, The Winter Passing created an infectiously raw mix of punk energy and indie rock quirks that garnered critical acclaim. When the time came for a follow-up, the band sought to create a record that built on that adventurous spirit and further utilized each member’s individual musical sensibilities. The band recruited legendary producer J. Robbins (Against Me!, The Promise Ring, Texas Is The Reason, Jets To Brazil) to help execute their vision in the studio, and the result is an incredibly dynamic release that effortlessly bridges the gap between anthemic punk rock melodies and the spunky complexities of ‘90s alternative. While its moods and tones are many, Double Exposure is an impressively cohesive release with a uniquely Irish spin.
The Winter Passing have never shied away from intensely personal lyrics in their work, but on Double Exposure the band write with an even deeper vulnerability. Predominantly crafted by brother and sister songwriting duo Rob and Kate Flynn, the EP’s lyrics form aloose concept around the use of multiple starkly personal perspectives being seamlessly woven together to make a unified narrative. This approach creates a universal quality to very personal songs that follow the sibling’s parallel struggles with the physical and mental instability caused by intense anxiety.
More than most bands, The Winter Passing is a sum of its parts, and Double Exposure is the result of that cooperation at its finest. Each member’s distinctive contributions blended together to make an incomparable portrait of a band coming into its own.

Confirming their official return from a two year hiatus – Inherit The Stars have announced that production work has commenced on their 2nd full length album.
Breaking out onto the British metal scene in late 2012 with the sole intention to develop a sound that’s completely their own – Sheffield born and bred outfit Inherit The Stars are an explosion of sound that flirts with the margins of many genres. The band quickly became recognised for their powerful metal-edged guitar riffs, adrenaline-filled synth lines and vocal attacks that explode in your eardrums before dragging listeners into huge melodic choruses.
Boasting a debut album produced by Jim Pinder at Treehouse Studio (Fightstar, Rise To Remain, While She Sleeps), ‘We Were Made To Walk The Skies’ was digitally released in May 2013 and earned positive attention from rock/metal critics for their genre pushing sound which takes elements of post-hardcore and alternative rock gelled with metalcore and a dose of punk pop. Equally championed by alternative rock and metal press and radio around the world, Inherit The Stars released three video singles as part of their apocalyptic themed Orbis Trilogy. In the space of a few months, Inherit The Stars’ fast rising popularity had taken them from the smallest of local venues to selling out some of Sheffield’s biggest venues such as Corporation and the 02 Academy.
With a successful debut UK tour in early 2014, festival appearances and support slots under their belt, Inherit The Stars released their eagerly awaited 5 track Beyond The Beacons EP in December 2014. Bringing their music to a national audience through support from Kerrang Radio’s Alex Baker, video premieres on Big Cheese and a track feature on the cover CD of Feb 2015’s edition of Rock Sound Magazine – Inherit The Stars embarked on a further UK tour through April/May providing their progress from regional popularity to attracting crowds across Britain and have opened stages for heavyweights such as Bring Me The Horizon, We Are The Ocean, etc.
Inherit The Stars are currently writing and recording new material for their sophomore album release. Further news from the band will be announced in coming months.
This thing people is a great glorious slab of a track. It’s so glorious you can taste it. It’s all sorts of stuff, it evokes the sounds of the past while at the same time being of today.
The frankly beautiful thing is that it builds and builds. It builds from something that has you thinking Love, Santana, to a great freaking freakout. There is organ people, there is organ in a way that makes it a lead instrument, it’s choppy, it’s soulful, it’s hugely powerful. It has a bassline that you feel way way down in your soul.
You could be forgiven for thinking “quite what have I got myself into’ as there is, of all things, a short sax solo right at the intro, but this works, it’s part of the build. And then there are vocals, those sort of laid back soulful 60s’ style vocals singing of how hard it is in the city, a Russian Princess, a tramp and his wolfhound sleeping in a doorway. This is all quite beautiful maaaannnnn.
And then it builds, to a freakout, there are searing guitars, there are those vaguely tribal drums, there are great glorious organ stabs. And then it ends. And as it ends all you can think is “I need to hear that again”. And you just want this thing to stretch out, you imagine that end section just going on and on. And in my case I’m thinking, can I actually finish writing my immediate reactions to the track as frankly I just need to immerse myself in this thing much much louder than my neighbours might appreciate at nearly 2am.
The louder you play it, the more you appreciate the power of the band, the complexity in the arrangement, the layers of sound, that guitar that is frankly like spoonfuls of great glorious creamy sound. The frankly freeform drumming in the end section. The care the band have taken in putting this together.
This is some powerful track, it’s of today yet it evokes the good bits of music from way back then. It moves you. I love this, it ticks all sorts of boxes for me. Do I recommend it, hell yeah of course I do. This is music for everybody.
‘In the City’ is available from all digital retail providers. Prints of the artwork (with download codes) will be for sale at upcoming gigs.

Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes, the Australian alt-country/Americana outfit due to return to the UK at the end of June, have shared the video for new single ‘I Hope That I’m Wrong’, taken from their fourth album ‘Some Girls (Quite) Like Country Music’ out in the UK/Europe on June 29th 2018 (pre-order via Bandcamp/ iTunes).
In their own words: “A lot of people have responded strongly to this song, and we wanted the film clip to show the writer’s perspective on it – which has a lot to do with the ugliness that we see inside ourselves. We bounced some thoughts around as a group before Shaun [Ryan] came up with the idea that became the video, inspired in part by by Oscar Wilde’s novel ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’.
Portraits are a theme of this whole record, and they are not always flattering. We’re adults now, which means we should be comfortable to lay ourselves bare – the tangled mess of humanity that each of us are. As well as the band (and a few cameos) this clip stars the beautiful Kellie Tori, an actress who’s soul we’re convinced is not nearly so dark as ours, but who was kind enough to conjure up some ugliness anyway (well, on canvas at least)!” Full tour dates below:

ABOUT LACHLAN BRYAN & THE WILDES
Lachlan Bryan and The Wildes have built their reputation on storytelling. Over the past eight years they have released four records, toured Europe and the USA multiple times, shared stages with Americana and country heavyweights and picked up a string of awards, including the Golden Guitar for ‘alt country album of the year’ with their landmark release ‘Black Coffee’.
Since emerging in 2009, Lachlan Bryan and The Wildes have become known as the finest Australian exponents of Americana Music, winning the prestigious Golden Guitar Award for Alt-Country Album of the Year in 2014 and being finalists again in the category in 2016 (Lachlan returned to the awards to present the very same award to Kasey Chambers in 2018).
At home they have played the main stage at every major country and roots festival, as well as supporting international acts such as Steve Earle, Joan Armatrading, Shawn Colvin and John Hiatt in theatres across the country. Lachlan and band have also toured the USA several times and made their first visit to Europe in 2017, where they performed shows in Switzerland, Germany and The UK (where the band was a highlight of the iconic Maverick Festival).
Whether appearing as a stripped-back roots three piece or in their full five piece formation, Lachlan Bryan and the Wildes are always an engaging live act. The stories are universal and their authenticity is palpable.
Following appearances at the likes of The Great Escape, Live At Leeds, All Points East, 53 Degrees North, Long Division Festival and more, LIFE have shared a new video for their anthemic and frenetic new single “Grown Up”. The video comes ahead of the bands forthcoming UK tour dates, which will kick off at The Lexington, London on 14th June.
The band will play the following live dates:
14th June – The Lexington, London (single launch show)
15th June – The Shed, Leicester
16th June – Sussex Arms Basement, Tunbridge Wells
17th June – Green Door Store, Brighton
20th July – Tramlines, Sheffield
28th July – Leopallooza
31st August – Electric Fields
“Grown Up”, the first single to be taken from their forthcoming LP, is a pounding slice of muscular indie-rock that plays with the theme of adulting – the concept of stepping up to your responsibilities and behaving in a mature fashion – and sees the band hone in on a bigger and more focused sound.
Frontman Mez describes the new single: “Grown Up is about getting to grips with adulthood and wanting to fall in love again. Seeing the decay of human life as it ages in a park with the dying swans. Is there hope between the space on your plate as you fork at your tea? Can you be too grown up for love?”
Don Broco have announced a major UK tour for next year, including a headline show at London’s Wembley Arena – their biggest to date – following their Top 5 album, ‘Technology’, released earlier this year. To celebrate the announcement, the band have also released the video for their new single, ‘Greatness’.
‘Greatness’ is the fifth in a series of surreal and ground-breaking videos Don Broco have made with US production company Dominar Films. These have seen the band expand the traditional music video formula into spectacular cinematic masterpieces, with eye-popping videos for ‘Everybody’, ‘Pretty’, ‘Technology’ and ‘Come Out To LA’.
The incredible, and hugely entertaining, film for ‘Greatness’ sees the band engaged in a Mad Max style battle, with dramatic fight scenes, a hint of Game Of Thrones and a sensational dance routine, all set in an apocalyptic Los Angeles.
Lead singer Rob Damiani explains, “Our video for ‘Greatness’ picks up 10 years after what went down in ‘Come Out To LA’ & ‘Technology’. My cyborg self has been buried in the desert and the Earth has been decimated by aliens but luckily I have one ally left who’s got my back in this post-apocalyptic world…”
Back in the real world, and following their sold-out Alexandra Palace headline show last November and two sold out tours already this year (playing to over 40,000 fans in less than six months), Don Broco’s 2019 UK tour sees them step up even further as one of Britain’s most exciting arena bands.
Rob Damiani says of the upcoming tour, “We’re so excited to announce our biggest tour to date and first ever arena run next February! We had the best time at Alexandra Palace last year so are massively looking forward to bringing the full Technology show to the rest of the UK. We’ve never played Wembley Arena before so finishing the tour there will be insane. I saw Foo Fighters there back in the day, it was the first time I’d ever crowd-surfed and remember so vividly getting hauled over the barrier then running back round to the back of the crowd and going up again and again. I reckon I must have crowd-surfed about 10 times. I love that place!”
Joining them on all dates will be Welsh pop-punk heroes Neck Deep and US metalcore band Issues – full tour dates can be found below.

‘Columbia’ is bracingly thrilling debut which firmly places The Blinders at the vanguard of a new generation of politically engaged British guitar bands. Loosely based around the concept of Columbia as “an alternate world informed by reality”, on the album The Blinders display a ferocious intelligence, as influenced by history, literature and art as they are by Britain’s current political and economic woes. As well as ‘L’Etat C’Est Moi’ – “a delirious indie stomper with a heart of gold” CLASH – the album contains previous single ‘Gotta Get Though’, which spent five weeks at No.1 at Amazing Radio.
The Blinders are Thomas Haywood (guitar, vocals, word), Charlie McGough (bass guitar), and Matthew Neale (drums, backing vocals). Growing up in Doncaster, the trio met at school and were originally inspired by local heroes Arctic Monkeys, though for ‘Columbia’, which was produced by Gavin Monaghan at Magic Garden Studios in Wolverhampton, they draw on influences as diverse as The Smiths, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Kanye West.
Now based in Manchester, The Blinders have been picking up specialist radio support since their first DIY releases from the likes of Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and Daniel P Carter, Radio X’s John Kennedy, and 6Music’s Chris Hawkins and Steve Lamacq, who recently had the band on his show for a BBC Music Introducing Session.
After a series of support tours and 2017 Festival appearances including Reading & Leeds, Isle Of Wight, and TRMSMT, The Blinders undertook their debut headline tour in February. Earlier this month they supported Cabbage (who called them the “best band in the country right now”) at their all-day festival at Manchester’s Ritz, and drew a huge crowd at the Neighbourhood Weekender festival. They play Kendal Calling festival on July 28th, with more UK Festival appearances to be announced shortly.
