SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Run Logan Run drop ‘The Delicate Balance Of Terror’, tour April/May 2018

0

Bristol duo Run Logan Run are a head on collision of pounding tribal drums and screaming guttural saxophone. Formed through a shared passion for improvisation, spiritual jazz and heavier experimental music, the duo has been authoring their own narrative in the new wave of crossover jazz, whilst touring the UK extensively, sharing stages with the likes of Colin Stetson, Melt Yourself Down, Shabaka Hutchings, Sarathy Korwar and Hieroglyphic Being. Now, having released an EP, live cassette and limited-edition lathe cut 7”, they are set to release their debut album ‘The Delicate Balance Of Terror’.

Their set-up is seemingly straightforward, composed of a drum kit and saxophone, ran through a modest collection of carefully selected effects pedals before being fed into guitar and bass amps simultaneously. However, the result is two musicians who are constantly finding new ways to push the boundaries of the duo format, whilst instilling originality at every opportunity. Run Logan Run’s influences are greatly varied across the new album, to the point that tracing the origin of the duo’s overall sound is futile. At any one time ‘The Delicate Balance Of Terror’ can call to mind the likes of Pharoah Sanders, Can, Lightning Bolt, Sun Ra, Polar Bear, Boris, The Comet Is Coming and even A.R.E Project. However, despite the familiarity that resonates from their multifarious inspirations, their sound remains entirely inimitable.

Architects of intense contrast the duo’s diverse and precise instrumentation regularly flirts with fragility and raw power. ‘The Delicate Balance Of Terror’ is filled with contemplative deep jazz moments lodged in cyclic hypnotic trances, which are pushed to their very limits by ruthless drum sections. Elsewhere, the saxophone takes an altogether more audacious approach with a carpet bomb of FX driven monolithic slabs of bass, employing circular breathing, heavy delay and pitch shifting. Strewn throughout this are junctures of attenuation where they play with fragmented rhythms, and smatterings of delicate free jazz melodies.

The new album was recorded live at Stoke Newington’s Total Refreshment Centre, which has been, and continues to be, a prominent platform for promoting, recording and releasing some of the best new talent from the British underground. It was also produced by the estimable Danalogue & Betamax of The Comet Is Coming, instilling further idiosyncratic dynamics into Run Logan Run’s already distinctive sound.

Future-facing and fascinating, Run Logan Run are fast becoming a solid feature in the UK’s rising jazz firmament. Having already played a number shows this year supporting the likes of Yazz Ahmed and Thought Forms, Run Logan Run will also be embarking on another full UK tour in spring 2018.

– Andrew Neil Hayes (Saxophones / FX)
– Dan Johnson (Drum Kit / Percussion)

TOUR NEWS: Os Mutantes May 2018 tour

0

A rare UK tour in May by OS MUTANTES, the hugely influential Brazilian psych and experimental collective that Were instrumental in launching the Tropicália movement in the late ’60s. Kurt Cobain, Beck, David Byrne, Flaming Lips, Davendra Banhart and Of Montreal have lauded Os Mutantes and cited their considerable influence.

When Os Mutantes was formed, it combined influences from psychedelic acts from the English-speaking world like The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Sly & the Family Stone with bossa nova, tropicália, samba and the cultural legacy of the Brazilian art vanguards from the modernist movement.

One of the most well-known and influential rock bands in Brazil, Os Mutantes are cited as a major influence to many contemporary underground or independent bands in the United States and Europe. Beck paid tribute to the group with his single “Tropicália” from the album Mutations. The Bees (UK band) covered “A Minha Menina” on their first album, Sunshine Hit Me. Kevin Barnes of Of Montreal cites Os Mutantes as an important influence. Talking Heads frontman David Byrne has worked to publish and promote the group’s music through his Luaka Bop label. Kurt Cobain publicly requested a reunion tour from the trio in 1993, writing a letter to Arnaldo Baptista, but the bands first live performance since 1978 was at London’s Barbican Arts Centre on May 22, 2006 – (though without Rita Lee, who was replaced with Zélia Duncan on vocals). This performance was followed by shows in New York City, Los Angeles (with the Flaming Lips), San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Chicago, and Miami. However in September 2007, both Arnaldo Baptista and Zélia Duncan left the band, each expressing wishes to continue with their respective solo projects.

Sérgio Dias, however, vowed to keep the reformed band alive, not wanting to let “the giant sleep again”, as he put it. And so, led by Dias with Esmeria Bulgari on vocals, Henrique Peters on keyboards, Vinicius Junqueira on bass and Claudio Tchernev on drums the band toured extensively enjoying some great highlights such as “A Minha Menina” featuring as the audio track for the McDonald’s commercial “Victory” in June 2008, their first new release in 35 years, “Haih Or Amortecedor” (ANTI- Records) in September 2009. Extensive tours in support of the album including Glastonbury Festival in June 2010. In 2011, they collaborated with Of Montreal on the song “Bat Macumba” for the Red Hot Organization’s most recent charitable album “Red Hot+Rio 2.” and in 2013 the release of their album “Fool Metal Jack”. In 2017, Sergio Dias collaborated with the English singer-songwriter, Carly Bryant and subsequently she was put into the band’s line up on vocals, guitars and keyboards. Tres Olhos Music Festival quoted after her debut performance “”Packed with the new vocals, Carly Bryant took the audience to ecstasy, showing she’s here to stay.” The six piece released the single ‘Black and Grey’ in late 2017 and are currently working on a new studio album.

SINGLE & EP NEWS: Fizzy Blood unveil ‘PINK MAGIC’, ‘PINK MAGIC’ EP due later this year

0

Leeds’ Fizzy Blood reveal their colossal new single ‘Pink Magic’ today. Commanding and anthemic, the track showcases a new strength to Fizzy Blood’s sound.

“’Pink magic’ is probably the easiest song we’ve ever written. It kind of just fell into our laps when together we were messing around with a korg, we got a bit of a trance-like groove going and just decided to see how far we could take that before it became boring We never found the answer, instead we got Pink Magic.

The lead guitar part, which at the time I didn’t know was gonna become Pink Magic, came about when I was messing around with a musical phone in the call centre I worked in at the time. Each key was assigned a different pitch and pressing them in the order of a phone number pulled from the Hull phone book gives you the melody you hear in the intro”
– Paul Howells, guitars

Pink Magic is supported by the PRSF Momentum Fund. The track follows previous single CFO, which landed Fizzy Blood their first daytime BBC Radio 1 play courtesy of Clara Amfo. Both tracks will feature on forthcoming EP Pink Magic, which the band announce will come later this year on Killing Moon.

“The ‘Pink Magic’ EP is our third and final EP. It’s taken us a few years to figure out who we are as a band, as musicians and as people, and this is the happiest we’ve ever been with our music. In the UK music scene it’s easy to get boxed in, we’ve managed to tour with the likes of While She Sleeps and then go straight on to hit the road with Spring King, very different crowds and very different music, however, all this has taught us is that we’re not a metal band and we’re not an indie band, we want to be the band that excites all listeners of music and more, so stop giving out titles and just enjoy it. After touring and being around each other non stop for the past 4 years, we’re now very comfortable in our own skin. Our third EP is what we believe to be the most accurate representation of who we are as a band and where we want to take our music moving forward. We’re happy to present the EPs as a trilogy but I wouldn’t kid anyone and say this was the plan from the start. These three offerings will have to tide you over till we’re finished with what comes next…”
– Paul Howells

Four months in to 2018 and the band are showing no sign of slowing down, recently touring with Spring King before embarking on their first UK headline run – including a sold out hometown show in Leeds. Now gearing up for slots at Live At Leeds, Hit The North, Dot To Dot, Y Not and Boardmasters festivals, alongside a couple of headline shows, Fizzy Blood are an unstoppable force on the UK live circuit. Additional tour dates and further news on their forthcoming Pink Magic EP will be announced very soon.

Following her first exhibition ‘Dare to Dream’ which opened at ArtEZ, Academy Of Music in Enschede, Stills will now be bringing a new collection exclusively to the Leeds Gallery: ‘Dare to Dream II’. The collection will feature images of artists including Biffy Clyro, Kasabian, Editors, Paul Weller, Courtney Marie Andrews, Alice Cooper, and many more.

Speaking about this new collection Stills says: “In this exhibition ‘Dare to Dream II’ I am bringing some of my best works to Leeds. These stills reflect the energy the artists bring on stage in the best way. I dared to dream and followed my heart. I hope these pieces are an inspiration to everyone, you’ll find pictures of bands like Courtney Marie Andrews, Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown, Alice Cooper, Editors, Paul Weller, Kasabian and more.”

Maron Stills a.k.a. Maaike Ronhaar (1978) is a self-taught music photographer from the Netherlands. With a preference for raw and on-the-fly photography she captures the aesthetics of reality in an unconventional way. Always looking for the right energy by focusing on the tiniest action in all that moves around music.

She bought her first camera, sneaked in at concerts and just started shooting. By the end of 2016, after building her portfolio for about six months, she got her first job as a house photographer at ‘Metropool’ Hengelo.

Maaike got noticed and invited to tour with bands like Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown, Strand of Oaks, Courtney Marie Andrews and RUV. Being their tour photographer soon her pictures got published by both national and international newspapers and magazines (The Telegraph, Lust for Life Magazine, Liveguide, Country Magazine and many more).

CAMPAIGN NEWS: Music Venue Trust regional meetings for 2018

0

Music Venue Trust has created a series of events for 2018. To build towards the annual national networking event Venues Day, which takes place in London in October, during May and June venue representatives will have the chance to attend 7 meetings spread across the country. Designed to be on major travel routes to increase the chances of getting to one of them, the events cover Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England.

The Music Venues Alliance was created in January 2015 as a free-to- join, informal association of Grassroots Music Venues (GMVs). MVA members benefit from being part of a national network of venues across the whole of the UK and have access to offers, advice and information. The MVA has grown to 400 members, and so represents a significant proportion of the UK’s GMVs, with whom MVT consult regularly to enable them to speak with authority on behalf of the sector.

They believe that opportunities to bring venue reps together are incredibly important, to share positive news and discuss challenges and how they can be tackled. All their work is informed by discussion with members of the MVA and not everyone can make it to London for Venues Day.
