‘Horde II’ is taken from their debut album ‘Burst’ which was produced by Jesse Gander (White Lung, Japandroids) and released on Hassle Records (UK) in February, and Sargent House (US) in May.
“Yes, this is ‘Horde II’. Which means, there is also a ‘Horde’ that appeared on our first 7″ vinyl, self-released in early 2014. Often song-riffs like this are borne out of our guitarist fooling around with ideas at rehearsal while I’m setting up my drums. With ‘Horde’ I felt this amazing vibe hearing Stijn’s ideas, and so when one day Stijn was randomly playing such ideas again I felt this exact same vibe all over again; I knew instantly this was going to be ‘Horde II’.” – Stefanie, drums & vocals

Wearing an eclectic and vast set of influences, Brutus are quickly gaining notoriety as one of the most exciting emerging rock acts, with notable figures such as Lars Ulrich (Metallica) and Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan) championing their music.
Brutus create a pummelling, meteor-shower of sound. Drummer vocalist Stefanie mixes black-metal blast beats with math-rock flourishes whilst belting the most impassioned vocals, shifting from deceptively melodic to out-right larynx-punishing in the blink of an eye, whilst guitarist Stijn Vanhoegaerden takes ethereal post-rock tones to hardcore punk levels of speed and energy aside Peter Mulders powerful sub-frequency shift. The three collide to make a sound as monolithic and frantic as it is emotive.
Being in different bands from the same region of Leuven (Belgium), Stefanie, Stijn and Peter teamed up to start Brutus early in 2013. “I’d heard about Stefanie around on the scene before I saw her play”, says bassist Peter Mulders, “everyone told me I had to check out this new drummer who blew everyone else away, hands down. And she did. Her talent is disarming”. Although, it was never really the plan that Stefanie would take on vocals as well. For a while the band were looking for a singer, but Peter and Stijn couldn’t get over the idea that Stefanie would nail this too. Hesitant as she was, one day she blurted out lyrics in her raw yet angelic voice, immediately ending the struggle to find a singer for the band.
At first sight, the trio are not a perfect match. “Being in Brutus is not easy”, the three of them agree. “Brutus has never been about combining our shared influences or tastes. Instead, we are three different personalities with different tastes in music that are often in conflict”, says Peter Mulders. “But whenever we come together on stage or at rehearsals, something happens.” With all their different ideas and tastes they are able to form amazing collisions, both musically and personally. It’s exactly this that makes Brutus a virtuosic and unpredictable live force, a band that will keep you on your toes. Trouble comes in threes, so does Brutus.
