ALBUM REVIEW: Isaac Hughes-Dennis – ‘Welcome to the Revolution’

0

How you feel about giving this album a go will depend on how you feel about post-folk with sometimes a comedic, and social and/or political angle. Or indeed how you feel about music that is funny in general. I myself have what might be described as an extremely selective approach to this – I like Tim Minchin a hell of a lot, admire the songs of Victoria Wood, and am normally to be found rolling on the floor helpless with laughter at Bonzo and Neil Innes songs. However Weird Al Yankovic leaves me completely cold.

The thing with Isaac’s album is that it covers a wide range of subjects in his songs at least one of which is going to chime with you. And there is a message in some of the songs which might be broadly described as left-wing. Musically some of it has a certain Bonzo thing going for it and some of it rather strangely reminded me of Arlo Guthrie (son of Woody and writer of ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ which is hilarious, well worth a YouTube or Google search). And the music here is rather good, Isaace sure knows how to play, his singing style and voice are rather compelling.

The album opens with ‘Adolescent Syndrome Disorder’ a song about the experience of being a teenager set mainly to a ragtime thing (although it dips briefly into ‘Teenage Dirt Bag’). It’s strangely heartfelt really. ‘Pixelated Lovers’ is a rather sad song about somebody being in love with someone they only know through Facebook. Both of these although rather sad actually leave you with a smile because the lyrics are rather wry.

‘An Ode To Jeremy’ is indeed exactly what you might be expecting, it’s a song about Jeremy Corbyn. It’s actually a sort of love song in which Isaac actually proposes to him. But the delivery makes it sound rather tongue in cheek, and the lyrics are rather funny. ‘Oppression’ is a tale of a vegan left-wing and gay person who wants to be oppressed so turned white, right-wing and male so they can continue to be oppressed. The lyrics are laugh out funny. It sort of turns into a rant of right-wing policies.

My one gripe with this album is that Isaac sets ‘Teenage Jesus’ to the tune of ‘Hallelujah ’ which I kind of get why but that sort of crosses a line for me. This is a pity because the concept of the song is rather clever. It’s a complex concept but essentially he’s comparing Jesus to somebody that might be discriminated against. Cleverly at one point Isaac admits that he might have gone too far in the words. Note that some of this might not chime with some people.

‘Fake Glasses’ had me choking back laughter, it’s about people wearing glasses just to be trendy.

Although there are a couple of other tracks on the album I’m to going to jump straight to my highlight ‘Reheb’. This is a song about Hebden Bridge, it’s not particularly complimentary, so I wouldn’t recommend it for actual residents unless you have a sense of humour, and are prepared to laugh at your home town. I myself used to live in a neighbouring town where the general attitude to Hebden is the one expressed in the song. Look some sample lyrics here ‘Oh Hebden The land of middle class, completely up their arse’, ‘The land of the white, sure we’ve got rastas, but they’re all white’, it’s actually all rather vicious, I’ll spare you the lyrics about breastfeeding. Personally this had me laughing out loud with tears rolling down my cheeks, but then this depends on how much you know about Hebden Bridge, actually the view of Hebden that seems to be held in places outside that particular part of West Yorkshire is going to be enough for you to find this funny even if you live in say Hull or Scarborough.

Isaac’s album is sometimes funny, sometimes rather moving but the delivery has that kind of wry thing going for it which adds a touch of humour even when the lyrics are rather heartfelt. And the comparison to Tim Minchin is a valid one, Tim has songs that are incredibly moving and not funny in any way. I found myself rather charmed by the songs on this album, it took me a couple of listens to really start to get it if I’m honest, and you really need to listen to the words, but you’ll be rewarded if you do that.

The info

Isaac Hughes-Dennis is a politi-folk comedy musician who combines wit, upbeat tunes and bold political statements. With over three years of experience performing and playing live, including playing festivals (Solfest, Hebden Bridge Arts Festival, Just So, Eden, GNUF, and more) political events and memorials in such venues as large polytunnels, the smallest music venue in the U.K and Blackpool Pleasure Beach. he’s been described as ‘Tim Minchin on steroids’, and “What the Artic
Monkeys could have been”.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Drenge ‘Strange Creatures’ out 22nd February, Spring tour

0

DRENGE have announced their third album, STRANGE CREATURES, produced by long-time collaborator Ross Orton [Arctic Monkeys, M.I.A, The Fall] will be released on 22 February 2019 via Infectious Music. The follow up to their critically acclaimed albums DRENGE [2013] and UNDERTOW [2015] as well as this year’s AUTONOMY EP, the album includes the singles THIS DANCE and AUTONOMY, and was recorded in Sheffield at McCall Sound earlier this year. The album was made “after months of chiselling away, ripping themes and ideas apart, and sewing them back together,” and is described by the band as “the most considered record we have ever made”. To coincide with the release of the new album, DRENGE have announced a UK tour for spring 2019, with tickets are on general now.

Speaking about the new album, the band say, “It’s a nocturnal record. A psychological horror movie on wax. Warped hallucinations from mundane observations as you move through it. Is that a school or a skyscraper on fire in the distance? Or maybe it’s just the ski village? You drive nearer, past roadside diners jammed with dancing teenagers, through Uncanny Valley, past the most unhygienic nightclub in the world. The stereo sounds like it’s going to fall apart at any moment. The car judders to a halt and all you can hear is the sound of the sea.”

STRANGE CREATURES track listing:

• Bonfire of The City Boys
• This Dance
• Autonomy
• Teenage Love
• Strange Creatures
• Prom Night
• No Flesh Road
• Never See the Signs
• Avalanches
• When I Look into Your Eyes

Hailing from Castleton, brothers RORY and EOIN LOVELESS formed DRENGE [taken from the Danish word for ‘boys’] whilst in their mid-teens. Initially with Eoin on lead guitar and vocals and Rory on drums, their raw grunge-inspired blues-pop sound was cultivated from the countryside landscape and their desire to escape from it. Their self-titled debut album was released a month after they made headlines for appearing in British Labour MP Tom Watson’s resignation letter from the Shadow Cabinet. After making their American television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman, they released their second LP UNDERTOW and toured it throughout festivals and headline shows across the world, alongside playing with the likes of WOLF ALICE, THE MACCABEES and ARCTIC MONKEYS.

Now expanded to a live four-piece, the band recently returned to their hometown of Sheffield for a one-off Halloween party Night of The Living Drenge, with guests Fizzy Blood and The Seamonsters. This special show followed their Grand Reopening Tour earlier this year and headline performances at Sŵn Festival in October and Deer Shed and Truck Festival in the summer. DRENGE will now embark on a headline tour in the spring of next year, in celebration of the new album, as follows:

FESTIVAL NEWS: Pile Up Festival, Sheffield has been cancelled

0

PILE UP FESTIVAL / STATEMENT

Pile Up Festival have today learned that their much needed external funding will not be made available until late March, leaving the project timeline too short to operate on the proposed dates of April 12/13/14. The festival was heavily reliant on external funding for 2019 and without it they have had to make the difficult decision to cancel the April event. All purchased tickets can be refunded via the ticket agent they were purchased through. With the news of the cancellation, the festival has also announced that founder Adam Ruane is to step down from his role as managing director, leaving room for a new face to take over within the existing management team. With April’s cancellation the new team will sit down and try to plan a new future for Pile Up Festival, although details are still very much in early development.

Speaking on behalf of Pile Up Festival, Adam Ruane said: “Pile Up Festival was always an ambitious project that we desperately wanted to grow into the event we knew it could be. We’ve had enormous bands on board from day one and extensive backing from press and music fans; the only issue has always been the external funding help which we needed to launch into year one. We wanted to create an event built for musicians to grow and have an opportunity to perform without the usual pay-to-play or share-this-post-to-win-a-slot set up. We had over 500 bands apply and are still receiving applications to this day, and we listened to each one to pick the bands we felt fit strongly with the line-up. It’s a shame that the event will now no longer happen and I can only apologise to all those who were excited to perform and be a part of what could have been an amazing event. The decision to cancel was not taken lightly but to spare any more wasted time we decided it was the best option. Hopefully something can come out of the cancellation, and I wish the new team all the best as they head into whichever direction they decide to take next”.

GIG NEWS: Jess Glynne & Rick Astley play Haydock Park Summer 2019

0

The Jockey Club Live and Haydock Park Racecourse are pleased to gift North West music fans an early Christmas present with the announcement that JESS GLYNNE and RICK ASTLEY are the first acts for their summer season, headlining the open-air concerts on Friday 7th June and Saturday 20th July respectively. As an added festive bonus, there is a special offer on early bird tickets.

In her first few years in the music industry, Jess has carved out a unique slot all of her own. Where others were contemplating the aftermath of heartache, she was always about standing on your own two feet. At the start of 2018, she took a listen back to her just completed second album, Always in Between. Like her blockbuster debut, I Cry When I Laugh, Jess brokers the hinterlands between pop, soul, R&B and house music on it.

When you look at the statistics that have marked her sky-rocketing career so far, there is probably a look of mild disbelief on your face…. I Cry When I Laughis one of the defining British pop records of its era. At the time of writing it has been a chart staple for 138 weeks. It debuted at number one, spawning 12 million worldwide singles sales, 39 weeks on the UK top 10, 2.5 billion Spotify streams, a sold-out UK arena tour, Brit, MTV: EMA, Ivor Novello, MOBO, Q and Glamour award nominations.

If you think you know Lancashire’s Rick Astley, think again. The much-loved multi-million selling 80s icon returned to capture the heart of a nation with his #1 platinum selling album “50” in 2016 and this year returned with his stellar album “Beautiful Life” in the top 10. Back in 1987 his solo debut “Never Gonna Give You Up” was a global smash, Number 1 in 25 countries. Over the next 5 years Rick had 13 international hit singles. He became a viral sensation in the naughties and most recently he has been back in the studio creating new, touchingly intimate ballads, upbeat dance beats, hook-laden pop songs and soul stormers – packing in the cheeky lyrical references and the signature sing-along style that are instantly recognisable

Tickets will be on sale at 8am on Friday 21st December via thejockeyclublive.co.uk, with a presale available to customers at 8am on Thursday 20th December. Tickets for both Jess Glynne and Rick Astley start at £35 with an early bird Christmas offer of £30 for adults until midnight on the 26th December. Child tickets for both shows start from £17.50.

SINGLE REVIEW: Melancholy Ray – ‘I Shouldn’t Be Drinking’

0

It’s been a while since I last reviewed a release from Melancholy Ray (‘Lampshade’), so the news that a new single was due was received with a certain amount of happiness in LSF’s new HQ.

‘I Shouldn’t Be Drinking’ sees the band in indie rock mode, indeed it’s so much an indie rock track – it hits all those bases you need for that ‘classic indie rock’ sound so well – that it’s almost like they set out to make a ‘perfect example of indie rock’. This makes it sound like they’ve make something that is something of a parody but it isn’t, it really isn’t.

The thing is that this song is great, the vocal does that slightly drawly laid back thing to perfection, the track really zips along and the guitar is cracking. The tune just bores its way into your head in double quick time and it has your body positively throwing shapes before you can even stop to think.

But wait, there’s something of an edge here, something that adds that little hidden extra Melancholy Ray trademark thing. And this is this surfy thing that occasionally raises it’s head amongst the indie rock sound. It’s there in the guitar, and I swear in this bass that sounds out in a dropout. And after much repeated listening I’ve decided it’s this that makes the song so bloody addictive. That and it shouldn’t go without a mention the hugely ‘just let me listen again so I can get some more of those’ nature of the lyrics. Those and the fact that it ends with this random guitar thing. All that and the fact that it just sounds like the band are having the hugest blast making this thing.

‘I Shouldn’t Be Drinking’ is just cool, it’s hugely fun and crucially these guys can really play, it’s fun and musically accomplished. Honestly who could ask for anything more.

The info

Melancholy Ray is a musical project developed by Callum Fewell which includes elements of indie/alternative rock, taking inspiration from the likes of The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand and singer songwriters such as Elliott Smith the band strive to create catchy songs which harness emotions, experiences and thoughts of the every day human.

SINGLE REVIEW: Casino Rockets – ‘Conscience’/’Torque’

0

I was hugely impressed with the last track I reviewed from Halifax’s Casino Rockets ‘River’. This time the band have treated us to a single with both an A side and a B side (let’s just quietly ignore my firm statement in a past review that a single is just that – one single track – and go with the band here, it’s a single with an A and B ‘side’).

Although, and surprisingly to me, ‘Conscience’ is quite a strident rocky thing, it still bears some of the trademarks of ‘River’. Namely the rather nice way the instruments all seem to weave around each other. It hovers musically somewhere around the indie/alternative rock sort of place. It doesn’t rock out in a screaming sort of guitar way but it just drives along, it’s seriously infectious.

Actually it was the vocals on this that first grabbed me, I rather like the lead vocal but it’s the backing vocals that really stood out. And then the guitar which while definitely a rock guitar is actually quite understated. This track is really much more than the sum of it’s parts, the full effect is everything as a whole not the individual parts.

After this the opening bars of ‘Torque’ had me somewhat slightly completely confused, for it’s a funky thing with a great bass line and choppy guitar. It’s funk with a punk edge. That and a vocal line which reminded me of Tom Robinson, it’s the delivery people. Closer listening joined the dots for this again is something that is more than the sum of it’s parts. Closer listening again gave me an opportunity to actually start to figure out the words, and although I’ve yet to entirely get them, they are distinctly good.

It’s actually rather a wonderful thing that I like more than the A side, but then again I’m rather known for liking singles for B sides rather than the A sides. Look I actually got The Goodies’ ‘Funky Gibbon’ for the B side ‘Sick Man Blues’ (it’s a cool blues track with a rather nauseating lyric, probably worth a Google search. And while you’re there check out their cover of ‘Wild Thing’ it’s a bloody riot). Sorry I got a little sidetracked there.

It’s not that I didn’t like ‘Conscience’ I did, I did a lot but ‘Torque’ had me more grabbed. As a whole the single is really great, and I might even suggest that they’d released it as double A sided single, I can see that some people will be more grabbed by ‘Conscience’ than ‘Torque’ and others the other way around, the choice people is yours.

If I’m honest the variety in the three tracks I’ve heard from the band have me somewhat pleasantly surprised, there’s variety but it’s variety that comes with great playing and really well put together sounds. And I like a band that just does their own thing, fantastic stuff.

Unfortunately ‘Torque’ is not yet available for download or streaming (except for Soundcloud) – here’s a message from the band “‘Casino Rockets would like to apologise for the fact that the B Side ‘Torque’ is not yet available on Spotify, Deezer, Amazon etc due to an admin error, it will be out next week on the 27th December, gladly we can offer the track to you on Soundcloud’

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Calva Louise share ‘Tug Of War’, tour March 2019

0

Calva Louise share gripping new single ‘Tug Of War’, the third track taken from their debut album ‘Rhinoceros; out 1st February.

Bursting with ferocity in their trademark anthemic style, Tug Of War encapsulates everything that’s come to be expected of the band. Silky guitar work, biting vocals and infectious, chaotic riffage takes centre stage and only adds to their growing reputation heading into next year’s debut LP release.

Discussing the video, the band stated: “We feel like in any kind of relationship there are unwritten rules everybody should follow, and that becomes a constant tug of war, dealing with unnecessary pressure. If everybody could have a complimentary point of view, then that tug of war could be a fun game where there are no set rules”.

Produced by Margo Broom (Fat White Family, Goat Girl) and mixed by Tom Longworth (Catholic Action, The Vryll Society), Calva Louise’s Tug Of War is out now via Modern Sky Records and available on all digital platforms (watch video here).
