EP REVIEW: Black Light Graffiti – ‘Through The Fires’

0

Black Light Graffiti are interesting, although they might describe themselves as an Indie/Rock band there are all sorts of rather lovely raucous raw frantic 60s’ R’n’B and 70s’ blues rock vibes going on all over this EP. And that’s something I can sign up to big time.

So if you go straight for the EP opener ‘The Flood’ you may well be asking yourself ‘what in the hell is Frank talking about here’, it’s perhaps a little bit more Indie rock in sound but there are hints of what is to come. That isn’t a criticism ‘The Flood’ really is great, it sort of rocks out in a restrained but hugely effective way.

Ah but now we’re talking ‘Reverend’ is pure raucous R‘n’B. Just listen to that bluesy rock thing going on, and the lyrics and vocal, and that guitar break, it rocks.

‘Second Chances’ comes on like something out of Free frankly. It’s all guitar stab breaks and wailing vocals. And that bass heavy thing going on in the chorus. And look it’s ages since I heard a solo introduced by the singer saying ‘geetar’. And that guitar wails, it wails big time, it’s a fine fine thing.

And then it’s big classic rock ballad time with ‘Sometimes I Forget’. This is just the biggest thing., it’s sit there and immense yourself yourself in that creamy creamy guitar time. And it even has a piano in the opening of the track. It’s gorgeous, yep I’m unleashing gorgeous. The vocals on this thing are just fantastic. And those drums, pure classic heavy rock loveliness.

And they ain’t done yet ‘Straight On Til Morning’ is 6½ minutes of something which just sounds like one of those classic rock driving songs mixed with something a little bit indie rock. It sounds strange really works, I mean really works. Standout on this is frankly the guitar breaks, they rock, they big time. I mean fuck it’s ages since I heard guitar like that, it sounds, and I mean this as a huge compliment, like Michael Schenker. It riffs, it screams, it roars. I mean look the end of this track is just 2 ½ minutes of guitar, lovely breathtakingly good guitar. It almost had me unleashing the good old air guitar.

I may be making this sound retro but it’s retro classic rock with a modern rock thing going on or, if you insist, modern rock with a retro classic rock thing going on. Frankly I care not one damn how you describe it, this is frankly great. If you’re a fan of that classic rock/bluesy rock/raucous R’n’B sound then this is very definitely one for you. If that isn’t your thing them I implore you, I beg you, to take a listen, it won’t be wasted time.

EP REVIEW: Kid Conventional – ‘30 Orbits’

0

I last reviewed something from Kid Conventional (The EP ‘I Will Never Be An Astronaut’) back in May last year, and was much impressed. Since then I had the pleasure of seeing him perform supporting Thomas & The Empty Orchestra.

The thing with the songs on this EP is that they are largely just voice and acoustic guitar, so there are two things that just have to work well for this to work – the vocals and the words. Jack’s vocals are just lovely, quite why I find them so captivating I can’t say, perhaps it’s the fact that he just sings the words and doesn’t put huge amounts of emotion into vocal pyrotechnics. It’s just simply sang and they let the words do the work. The words of these songs had me going back to listen again, with this almost compulsive need to try and work out what the songs meant. And they do mean something, these are not simple songs at all.

My joint favourite track from the EP ‘Samantha’ has a gentle driving rhythm that had me gentling swaying to the music and that drew me into the words. There’s the promise of broken relationships, a life wasted, relying on drink, a past with no future. The more I listened to words of this song the more emotionally effected I got. It is quite quite moving.

‘Conformence Anxiety’ has what I might call quite a jaunty tune, although lyrically it’s not a barrel of laughs. It seems to be about the anxiety of trying to fit in, and how sad and depressed this can make you (may be wrong here, that’s just my take). And this song has the most delightful slightly off-kilter electric guitar break which just works.

‘You’re Probably Not The Answer’ is sparse with this slow choppy guitar. It sounds deeply deeply dark and actually me feel quite down after listening to it for the fifth time (this isn’t a criticism, I do actually like music that makes me feel deeply emotional). It has the addition of out of tune piano right at the end which just sets off the lyrics off wonderfully. It seems to be about a relationship which isn’t ideal but will do.

The other joint favourite ‘Entropy’ has these little additions of piano. It is again about a relationship, a relationship in it’s final stages. The thing about this track is the end section which starts to add these noises, creaks and groans and thuds.

These are captivating compelling songs sung plainly and simply letting the words do the work of conveying the message. The arrangements are hugely effective, not taking any thing from the words. For the words are the important thing in the songs. Properly listening to these is just so hugely rewarding. If you like really well written and delivered songs with meaning these are for you/

The info

Kid Conventional is Sheffield singer-songwriter Jack Weston. With his dark folk style inspired by the likes of Bright Eyes and Fleet Foxes, he won Yorkshire Unplugged in 2013 and quickly became a fixture on the local scene. His single ‘No Promises’ was named at #15 on BBC Sheffield Introducing’s Top 50 of 2015. His May 2017 EP ‘I Will Never Be an Astronaut’ was released to glowing reviews and backed up by more than 50 shows around the UK.

He has played support slots for such high-profile artists as Jess Glynne, The Brand New Heavies, Little Comets, Low Duo and Charlotte Carpenter, with his honest and bitter-sweet lyrics, darkly comic stage-craft, and powerful and energetic vocal performances endearing him to music lovers from all musical backgrounds. In addition to his solo work, he currently fronts the Sheffield Beatles Project, who played acclaimed shows at Tramlines and the O2 Academy Sheffield in 2017 and 2018.

SINGLE REVIEW: Zach Pygall – ‘Olivia Jane’

0

One of the things I really like about doing LSF is that bands and artists I might never have discovered ask us to review their stuff. Zach was one of those artists I was really pleased to find out about when he got in contact to ask us to review his last single ‘Blue Skies’.

So the new single ‘Olivia Jane’ comes with the added benefit of The Harriets (another favourite discovery) playing on the track so it was with a rather huge sense of anticipation that I cued up the preview stream.

And was I in any disappointed? Was I hell. This is a huge toe tapping, dance around the room madly country/folky number with what I might describe as some bluegrass elements. It is frankly a little bit mad. So yep the music is great, it’s really quite horribly ear-wormy. This might almost be enough BUT the lyrics of this thing are fantastic, witty, laugh out loud funny in places, bitter-sweet.

The story of a guy who forgets things like picking up his girl from the station, her birthday and crucially her middle name, although not the important things like how he feels about her; delivered in that voice of Zach’s is just incredible.

And the lines

You were dancing in the rain
Half cut on champagne
And your forehead had that vein, because I called you Olivia Jane

are now indelibly branded into my head.

Look country might not be your thing but stick this on, take several deep breaths and prepare to dance madly, smile, laugh, feel slightly wonderfully sad and enjoy it OK. This is just wonderful, I can’t put it any better than that.

‘Olivia Jane’ was released on the 13th November – and available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, Apple Music and Bandcamp. Zach is playing a release show with two opening acts – Allora and The Paper Waits – at Wharf Chambers, Leeds on that date.

LIVE REVIEW: Tranqua Lite supported by Contrarians, Avacet – Wardrobe Leeds – 3rd November 2018

0
Tranqua Lite

There’s back story to this review. I first caught Tranqua Lite at Thinking Cap Festival over a year ago, under what we might call ‘less than ideal circumstances’. Even so I made a mental note to catch the band playing again when I could. For various reasons – and not always the reason I actually said I’m ashamed to say, but there were reasons for that – I had to say no to Tranqua Lite’s many invitations to come and see them (Thanks guys for not giving up on me!). Tranqua Lite are sadly not the only band I’ve turned down over the last year, it’s been a bit of strange time. The good thing is that the ‘strange year’ has come to an end with a move to Huddersfield, so at last I can go and see bands in Leeds without having to leave early to get the ridiculously early last train to where I used to live. So at last I could say ‘yes please can you put me on the guestlist’ to Toby (Tranqua Lite’s bass player) when he asked whether I could make this gig.

It appears that Tranqua Lite have also been going through some changes – Toby told me rather intriguingly that ‘things have changed since the last time’, and indeed they have. But more of that later, before we got to see and hear Tranqua Lite’s set there are two ‘new to me’ bands.

Avacet

Avacet flavour their alternative rock with that bass heavy sound and ringing guitar of classic post-punk. My review notes – scribbled in the virtual blackness of the Wardrobe – say ‘Sorta Cure-y in places’, and I’m sticking with that. And key is that they mix this with something we can recognise as alternative rock BUT it’s dark people.

Avacet

The thing that stands out about Avacet is the bass playing, frankly that bass was cool as fuck, it basically held my attention for the whole of their set.

Avacet

The problem with seeing a new band for the first time is, of course, that it’s hard to focus down on the detail, you really only get an overall impression. The notes – yep it’s those again – say I sometimes, only sometimes OK, felt that it sounded a tad samey in places. That may be because I wasn’t listening properly hard, that may have just been me on the night. Sometimes I’m a bad reviewer OK. What I do know is that my notes say ‘see this band again’ and yes I was impressed enough to make a big note to catch them again. My recommendation, check out the band on your download or streaming service of choice and go see them live.

Contrarians

Contrarians had me intrigued from the start. Their first song started with some really nice piano led stuff and then it exploded, I mean really exploded. And the band put on a show, visually they’re exciting. Musically, rather strangely, it sounded a little System of a Down in places, although the note that says this is also followed by the phrase bizarrely ‘bloody hell, this sounds like a rocky Divine Comedy’. I’m not entirely sure the band would be happy with that description. I think what I’m trying to say is that it – if there is such a thing – there’s a sort of alt-art rock thing going on.

Contrarians

This band can play, I mean really play, I was hugely impressed with that. And that wasn’t at all comprised by the show. You know sometimes bands put on a show and the playing suffers, Contrarians didn’t do that at all. And the lead vocals, really loved those.

Contrarians

The songs are epic and big, and they sound important. There’s light and shade, they’re really well put together. And there’s variation in the sound of individual songs but, even on this first listen, I got a ‘band sound’, there’s something that makes them hang together and work as a set. Look, and this is an order OK, go and see this band, they rock, they rock big time.

Tranqua Lite

The thing with going to see gigs to review and photograph is that you miss out on the ‘inter-band’ drink break. You have to stand in or near the best place to take photos from so that nobody else takes your spot. What this did mean was that I got to Tranqua Lite setting up and there was a lot of percussion coming on stage, I mean a hell of a lot of percussion. A little mysterious to say the least.

From the very start of their opening song the band are sounding huge, I mean really fucking huge. There’s layers and layers of sounds BUT there is a tune, a funky danceable tune. There’s wonderful bass and these little lovely hits of keyboard. The vocals don’t disappoint, something I noted the first time I saw the band a year ago.

Tranqua Lite

And this doesn’t let up, the second track is something that had me throwing shapes – OK small shapes, I was holding a large heavy camera and attempting to write review notes. Sometimes it’s hard being a reviewer. My notes say ‘yes it’s poppy but it’s alternative pop with a rock edge. It’s rock tinged pop with depth and thought’. And they’re not afraid to throw something entirely unexpected into the mix. This second song has something going on at one stage that sounded a little like Yes, it’s those layered vocals people.

And when Tranqua Lite do rock, they really rock, it’s a riot but there’s always a tune boring it’s way into your ears and brain. Objectively it’s clever, very clever but subjectively it’s just this wonderful sound thing going on.

Tranqua Lite

‘Balance’ (hey I may have that wrong, apologies if I did) the first song from some new material is all off-kilter and, as those notes say ‘damn hot funky as hell’. OK so I may have been losing my reviewer edge there but it’s way cool.

The band finish with their upcoming new single and it’s all choppy and funky, it’s rocky but with huge pop sensibility. And it’s for this that they deploy the vast amount of percussion, including the assistance of the tracks producer. It’s a really cool fantastic way to close a huge set.

Tranqua Lite

Tranqua Lite have come a long way since I last saw them – a lot can change in a year – and I’m really converted, I’m a fan. Can’t wait to see them again. And if you like alternative poppy rock with funky tunes and great playing, go see Tranqua Lite you won’t be disappointed.

VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: Hypnosister drops video for ‘I’m Going To Die’, Winter 2018 dates

0

Following his debut EP release, numerous singles and a slew of shows throughout this year, Hypnosister (aka Ex-Allusondrugs guitarist Damian Hughes) has revealed a music video for ‘I’m Going To Die’.

After his departure from Leeds based psyche-grungers Allusondrugs, Hughes launched his new fuzzed out space pop project, Hypnosister in mid 2017 drawing influence from My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana and Neutral Milk Hotel.

Taken from the self titled debut Hypnosister EP (see our review), ‘I’m Going to Die’ delivers Hypnosister’s signature big choruses and soaring space rock guitars, while this time exploring more progressive, eclectic songwriting, straying slightly away from the standard pop song format and including elements of carnival music.

“It’s about the people who manage to find truth in a world that’s completely locked up in deceit” Says Hughes. “When they try to spread that truth to help free people they end up crushed, driven to madness or simply just disappear at the hands of those that want the truth kept quiet.”

Catch Hypnosister at one of the following shows across the UK:

10th November – London, The Good Mixer
17th November – Keighley, The Exchange
30th November – Lancaster, The Bobbin
5th December – Bath, Komedia

Witty, intelligent, extrovert and piercingly insightful, Rebecca no longer has to worry about anybody else’s opinion or treading on any toes, and can be wholly, wonderfully herself.

DJ NIGHT REVIEW: Resurrection, Annie Nolan – Nelsons Wine Bar, Hebden Bridge – 27th October 2018

0

After seeing the name Andy Sloman Camies over and over in recommendations for DJ’s on Facebook, plus the great artwork surrounding the Resurrection DJ outfit events pages and posters. I thought I’d like to check them out.

So I donned my fangs and went along to the Halloween event at Nelsons Wine Bar in Hebden Bridge. First thing that struck me was, if you want a smooth top quality DJ beat matching house, techno then you are definitely in the wrong place with the wrong DJ.

However if you want to dance the night away, saying “wow I remember this, or what a great tune” then this is the place to be. Never heard so many cheers for tunes through out an evening.

In my book, best private party, wedding, birthdays etc DJ I’ve seen/heard and danced to for years

On another no no for most DJ’s, these guys take requests, in fact actively encourage it, prior to events via events pages and messenger and on the night and a lot of the crowd seem to appreciate the fact they can ask without the common DJ scowl.

Accompanying the DJ is lighting guy, and request taker, Terry the Mothman with some great lights, bit of smoke, which does make the night so much more enjoyable..

On with Resurrection, Annie Nolan from Trash Manor and Country Club, anyone who’s is into music and DJing in the Valley will know the name from many wonderful evenings including Beat herder festival..

During Annie’s set had the chance to chat with Andy about his DJ style. He explained that he got a little bored with all the times you enter a bar, club venue etc and you know what you’re going to hear all night long from the first 10 minutes of the DJ playing, house music, techno, set genres.

“No disrespect, but we started looking at something different and it took off, which was something we weren’t expecting. We really enjoy the freedom to play the room. I did look into the beat matching, syncing and all the other stuff pros tend to do, but got bored very quickly, plus the kind of stuff we play would be really hard to beat match as styles, drum patterns, BPM can be so different. I find it better to just have short pause then in, or if BPM similar will fade into next track. Do appreciate what it is and how skillful it can be, just not for me”

His second set again threw me, with classic tunes, from freestylers, Donna Summer, Happy Monday’s and some great 80’s tunes, but, important part was that the whole room was dancing, cheering the new tunes and having a great time..

Can you have Specials, Donna summer, Yazoo, The Trammps, Prodigy, Funk, Stone Roses and Groove Armada in the same setlist. Can now. Sure I also heard a little Jon Hopkins, Nicolas Jaar and even some Santana earlier on. He may not or chooses not to have the style of most DJ’s but Resurrection seem to have captured a good niche market locally and do it very well.

If you want a great party DJ, book these guys, Resurrection, great tunes, well selected. Great lights and even a little smoke machine to boot

If you want professional style DJ playing seamless sets of certain genres then steer clear…

Great night, thanks all…

Matt

FESTIVAL NEWS: Live At Leeds – first names for 2019 announced

0

Renowned as the first place to hear the essential sounds of the year ahead, LIVE AT LEEDS returns in 2019 with its biggest lineup to date – bringing together the names and bands that’ll be on everyone’s lips for the next 12 months, and the chance to find your new favourite band first for a day of live music like no other.

Heading up the lineup this year are some of Live At Leeds’ true success stories, led by returning guitar heroes Sundara Karma. Since forming in Reading, their blend of infectious hooks and direct lyrics have taken on the globe – with a debut album that took them to headline nights at London’s Brixton Academy and beyond. After returning last month with the mesmerising ‘Illusions’ and a hotly anticipated second album on the cards for next year, their set at Live At Leeds is bound to be an unmissable spectacle of what a band can be in 2019.

One of the most acclaimed and creative bands of the past decade, Metronomy will return in 2019 to open up a bold new chapter. Formed in the creative mind of frontman/band leader Joe Mount, their tear-stained lines of indie heartbreak have become a signature sound – with five studio albums morphing and growing into swaggering neon-pop with a catalogue of anthems to boot. An unmissable live act, Live At Leeds 2019 will be in for a treat when Metronomy come to town.

Tom Grennan is arguably the breakout artist of 2018, with an incredible year that has sent him to some of the biggest stages in the UK. After scooping a Top 5 Album with debut LP ‘Lighting Matches’, Tom has packed rooms across the country – with his gravel-smooth voice and unstoppable stage presence making him one of the most beloved songwriters that the UK has seen in quite some time. Bound to bring passion and charm to Live At Leeds 2019, he’s one only set to get bigger and bigger from here on out.

Across venues and locations around the city, Live At Leeds is full of unmissable moments – with a host of the finest in fresh and exciting music lining up for 2019. No comebacks in the indie world may be as anticipated for 2019 than Swim Deep, who across two studio albums have set themselves from the back with their dreamy and boundary-pushing sound. After time away, you can guarantee their set at Live At Leeds 2019 will be one packed to the rafters as Birmingham’s finest return to the fray in style. An act stamping their own mark on the world around them, Dream Wife stand as a vital act of current times. Combining punk spirit, a take no prisoners live show and a revered debut album to boot and you can guarantee they’ll go down a storm come May 4th. Another band with a debut album recently out in the world, the glam-screen swagger of Black Honey returns to Live At Leeds next year, with tracks like ‘Midnight’, ‘Hello Today’ and ‘Dig’ making them a live force to be reckoned with. Equally as captivating, and standing as one of the most talked about new bands of the past few months, the carefree pomp of Sports Team will roll into Leeds City Centre in May, bringing with them the sort of ambition and star-power that’ll have them leading the way for a whole new gang of bands to follow. After their landmark Scala headline show and with the charismatic points of frontman Alex Rice in tow, they’re ones not to be missed.

On their return to Live At Leeds, Swim Deep commented:
“Buzzin for Leeds. New songs. Buzzin”

Always changing and with something different around every corner, Live At Leeds packs in a vast array of bands and acts reshaping genre and styles. Scrappy South-Londoners Goat Girl have made a name for themselves with their fresh and unique take on what a guitar band can be, and their forward-thinking but raw set is bound to provide a moment unlike anyone else. Dreamy four-piece Gengahr bring themselves to Live At Leeds as they continue to innovate and evolve, with second album ‘Where Wildness Grows’ released last year to acclaim across the board. After a star turn on Later… With Jools Holland, Leicester’s Easy Life will be rolling with the smooth jazz-indie vibes to Live At Leeds this year, with tracks like ‘Pockets’ and ‘Frank’ pointing to one of the most exciting new bands on the circuit right now. Shining a light on the best the city itself has to offer, Leeds’ very own Marsicans will be on hand to celebrate at Live At Leeds 2019 as they sit on the cusp of a huge year with their sharp and sweet pop hooks. Equally, the hypnotic flows of Gently Tender (featuring members of Palma Violets and The Big Moon) will leave Live At Leeds 2019 with an army of new fans thanks to their incredible sound. It’s a shining example of why Live At Leeds is the only place to be when it comes to refreshing new music discovery.

The ultimate all-dayer, Live At Leeds remains unmatched as the leading light of live music and inner-city fun. Bursting at the seams with new bands all on the verge of something special, there’s something for everyone. From the soaring screens of Brighton’s Thyla, to the flickering panoramic plays of Another Sky (fresh from their recent TV debut on Later… With Jools Holland), the direct and heart-grabbing pop of Lauren Aquilina and the sharp Elli Ingram, the dazzling indie pop of Swimming Girls and the thriving rock and roll power of Scottish wizzes The Dunts – the very best are heading to Live At Leeds to prove their standings. With over 55 acts in total confirmed today, also including the Blossoms-approved Fuzzy Sun, Liverpudlian popper Zuzu, thrilling live kickers Saltwater Sun and the intricate yet open Squid – Live At Leeds 2019 is the only place to catch the hottest bands and artists of 2019 before anyone else.

The Dunts said:
“We’re very excited to play Live At Leeds festival next year, it’ll be our third time in Leeds after smashing Leeds Festival and LAL’s Ones To Watch, and we are prepared to die on that stage! We realise no one wants that but we are prepared!”

Saltwater Sun said:
“Hi! We’re Saltwater Sun and we are all fired up for our initiation into the Live at Leeds Club 2019! Heard nothing but good things about this festival and having only ventured to Leeds once so far, we’re understandably super excited to play for some people who haven’t seen us. As for our set, expect loud, high energy bops from start to finish. Bring your dancing shoes; we’ll do the rest.”

The starting gates to the summer ahead, Live At Leeds 2019 soundtracks a city soaring with the best in new and now.

Looking ahead to Live At Leeds 2019, Festival Director Andy Smith said:
“It’s really good to see breakthrough artists coming back for 2019, both Sundara Karma and Tom Grennan cut their teeth at the event making their first appearances in 2016 and ‘17 respectively. They’ve both had a great few years, selling out Leeds Academy and enjoying critical acclaim since their last LAL appearances; it’s amazing to welcome them back topping the bill. We see Metronomy return to Leeds for the first time since 2014, which will be a personal highlight, and local talent is represented well with Leeds men of the moment Marsicans leading the regional names. There are emerging artists on this announcement with huge buzz around them at the moment like Easy Life, Heavy Lungs and Sports Team, and this is just the first wave of names, there is plenty more to be announced!
