TOUR NEWS: Blonde Redhead August 2018 dates

0

New York trio BLONDE REDHEAD have announced their return to the UK for a string of live shows in August.

Not many bands can handle very long careers and never stop evolving and actually, keep on exploring, from record to record. Blonde Redhead deserves a place in this category. In nearly 25 years, the acclaimed New York based trio went from the noise rock of the early years to the refined dream pop of “Misery Is A Butterfly”, before reaching the sensual electronic textures of the studio album, “Barragán” which was released in 2014. Now it’s time to make a step forward once again, or perhaps I should say a step to the side, because, despite the variety of styles, the band has always been able to keep a personality and a unique identity easily recognizable. Fresh from the box set “Masculin Féminin” (September 2016) and the remix “Freedom of Expression on Barragan Hard” (March 2016) releases, Japanese Kazu Makino and twin Italian-Americans Amedeo and Simone Pace returned with new ‘EP “3 O’Clock”, on Asa Wa Kuru Records under license to Italian label Ponderosa Music & Art. Four songs, two of them sung by charming Kazu while the other two by guitarist and second voice of the band, Amedeo, which still mark once again the willingness to broaden their musical horizons.

It is no by chance that this melancholic Ep with a romantic graft comes out a few months after the tour that in 2016 saw the Blonde Redhead resubmit their cult album “Misery Is A Butterfly” with a string quartet: the 2004 record’s atmospheres emerge occasionally in these new pieces as they push even more in the direction of a massive presence of strings and wind instruments such as the viola, cello, violin, clarinet, oboe, flute and trumpet. The Ep was, in fact, made with the help, among others, of American ensemble ACME, and Eyvind Kang, American composer and violinist who has already collaborated with Blonde Redhead in the past on “Misery Is A Butterfly” and in the latest tour.

The first two tracks, “3 O’Clock” and “Golden Light”, are sung and written by Kazu Makino who speaking of the title track for the Ep launch, explains: “At three in the afternoon, a lot of things happen, how many times we schedule appointments at that time? In Japan, then, it is a holy hour, it’s ‘tea time’. Obviously you might even think about the three in the morning, but I wrote the song starting from this suggestion, thinking about what is a significant time to me on a daily basis, a kind of turning point, metaphorically the beginning of a new chapter for Blonde Redhead “.

Amedeo who authored the other two tracks, says, “‘Give Give’ is a piece that I have kept in the drawer, since the “Penny Sparkle” era, back in 2010. We added a line of flutes and strings plus percussions composed along with Mauro Refosco (who is a Brazilian percussionist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Atoms for Peace) to give more life to the song, which I cared about as it’s a song that I feel very close now, than at the time I wrote it.” He added, ” “Where Your Mind Wants To Go” we first recorded guitar, drums and percussion, and then develop arrangements with horns and trumpets in the studio with Michael Leonhart. ”

The orchestral touch is something that has always fascinated Blonde Redhead. “Speaking of this EP, I believe that the winds and arches addition in the songs can give the music a plus, it is what happens in the soundtracks, of which I am a big fan,” says Amedeo. “Furthermore, surely the last tour with a string session on stage has inspired the arrangement. During those dates we have played two of these new songs, “3 O’Clock” and “Golden Light”, and performing them live, we were feeling of adding small arrangements: that’s where it all started with the extra instruments. From there, and from a home away from the bustle of the big city: some months ago we spent a week in a country house in upstate New York,” says Amedeo. “We holed up, and we wrote every day for hours, laying the foundations for this Ep, but knocking out many other ideas that seem good to work soon on.”

“Samaritans”. A live favourite for sometime, the Theo Watkins directed music video compiles archival clips displaying traditional masculine imagery. The FADER writes: “”The mask of masculinity is a mask that’s wearing me,” sings front man Joe Talbot over the top of a tight and anxiety-laced guitar riff. It’s the third single… and one of their most confrontational songs to date.”

Speaking of the song’s message, front man Joe Talbot says:

“There’s been a long line of bullshit that has pushed men into a corner, where simple masking becomes a trope of masculinity and a catalyst for insanity. What we wear, what we eat, what razor we use, high performance chewing gum, go faster shampoo, how we treat women, how we treat ourselves, how we die. I truly believe that masculinity has gone from an evolution of cultural praxis to a disease. I wanted to encourage a conversation about gender roles by writing this song.”

“Samaritans” is the third song to be released from IDLES’s much-anticipated upcoming album “Joy As An Act Of Resistance.” Produced by Space and mixed by Adam Greenspan & Nick Launay (Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kate Bush), The album takes aim at everything from nationalism and immigration to class inequality – all while maintaining a visceral, infectious positivity. Singer Joe Talbot summarises: “This album is an attempt to be vulnerable to our audience and to encourage vulnerability; a brave naked smile in this shitty new world. We have stripped back the songs and lyrics to our bare flesh to allow each other to breathe, to celebrate our differences, and act as an ode to communities and the individuals that forge them. Because without our community, we’d be nothing.”

This autumn, IDLES will embark on their first ever global tour. Tickets are on sale now HERE

TOUR NEWS: Albert Hammond Jr September 2018 dates

0

Earlier this year Albert Hammond Jr released his fourth studio album Francis Trouble. Today, Albert shared the live video for ‘DvsL’. Shot in Santa Ana CA the video was directed by Kevin Slack.

Apple: https://apple.co/2IWJW1u

Francis Trouble explores a deeply personal topic – the stillborn death of his twin brother, Francis, and the lingering effects that event has had in his life and music. In November of 1979, Hammond Jr’s mother, Claudia, miscarried. Although they rushed to the hospital, Claudia and Albert Hammond Sr. were told that the baby was far too premature to live. Albert continued to grow inside of his mother undetected until she was nearly six months pregnant.

Taking a page from Bowie, Hammond Jr says: “What the music says may be serious, but as a medium it should not be questioned, analyzed or taken too seriously. I think it should be tarted up, made into a character, a parody of itself. The music is the mask the message wears and I, the performer, am the message.”

Working within this mentality, Hammond Jr created Francis Trouble, an homage to both the death of his twin and his own birth, as well as the complexities of identity that arise because of their intermingling. The number 36 became especially relevant, as he had learned more of Francis’s story at that age, and because he was born on the 9th day of the 4th month of the year. Significantly, the album is exactly 36 minutes long.

In celebration of Francis Trouble Albert will be coming to UK in September. Tickets available on Friday June 1st.

The multi-award-winning music festival, which is regarded as one of the best in the city has changed it up this year by introducing acts to the line-up which York Music Lovers may not have heard of before. Ellen Cole the Curator of the festival says: “I think it is so important for any festival to keep moving and this year I wanted to be more daring by introducing talent to the line-up, who I had never heard of before. All the acts complement one another well and it is going to be great for our audiences to discover more talent not just from York, but also from further afield. I never expected to get over 700 applications this year and it’s taken me nearly 12 weeks to go through them all. I am truly grateful for all the acts who have been in touch and I am gutted I couldn’t give them all a slot. Our festival seems to have taken a giant step forward this year and I am incredibly honoured to have been part of this event for the last six years. Our festival is family-friendly, has disabled access and will be located in a large marquee on Parliament Street. Our September festival always takes place alongside the York Food and Drink Festival, so there will also be plenty of delicious food and drink available. This year, we have complied a number of themed nights, so that our audiences know what to expect musically each night, from Folk to Pop to Country, we will have something for everyone to enjoy and the best part of York’s Little Festival of Live Music is that entry is free!”

This year’s music festival will feature renowned Yorkshire folk and rock n’ roll group the Jon Palmer Band; well-known American Brit-Pop band Bull who have recently returned from a successful tour across the UK, America and Europe; voice of an angel Edwina Hayes, who has won her reputation as a true natural talent of gentle folk-Americana; and renowned folk musician Boss Caine.

FESTIVAL NEWS: Handpick’d Festival is coming! – 28th/29th September

0

Twenty acts will perform across three stages in one weekend of discovery for fans of live music and the spoken word alike in a festival that will be the first of its kind for the venue.

Friday 28 September…

Shed Seven founding members Rick Witter and Paul Banks will headline the Friday night with an acoustic set. The duo come to PAC following on from the band’s triumphant sell-out show to over 8,000 people at Castleford Bowl. Expect all their classic anthems such as ‘Going for Gold’, ‘Chasing Rainbows’ and ‘Getting Better’ plus songs from their acclaimed new album Instant Pleasures.

York-based four-piece band The Howl & The Hum embarked on their first headline tour in England in the spring, following this up with appearances at Latitude, Live at Leeds and the BBC Biggest Weekend. The band combine dark hypnotic pop with post-punk influences, pierced with lyrics that make you call your mum the next morning.

Kicking things off on Friday will be Leeds singer-songwriter and YouTube sensation Jade Helliwell, with her distinctive sound of British Americana and country.

Saturday 29 September…

The furiously individual singer-songwriter, and former Brit Award nominee, Thea Gilmore headlines the Saturday night. Gilmore has attracted critical acclaim and admiration from her peers including Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, and Martha Wainwright.

Saturday’s line-up also features Bridlington boys Seafret, who went down a storm at PAC’s 2016 Platform Festival. The duo has supported the likes of Hozier, Kodaline and James Bay, and has amassed a huge fan base with over 10 million Spotify streams to their name.

PAC is excited to welcome The Eskies and their unique brand of folk noir/gypsy jazz/sea shanty and swaggering stage spectacle to Handpick’d following notable performances at Glastonbury, Cambridge and Camp Bestival.

The colourful, energetic and crowd-stamping, CoCo and the Butterfields will add the intimate vibrance of a village folk fair combined with powerful vocal melodies and an undercurrent of driving beatbox, delivering catchy songs resonating in a stadium-filling urban pop vibe.

If live poetry is your thing, then Matt Abbott will not disappoint. A rising star of the spoken word, Abbott has shared a stage with the likes of Jeremy Corbyn, Paul Weller, and Sara Pascoe and is rapidly establishing himself as one of the leading political poets of his generation.

Leeds based anthemic rock-pop brothers The Dunwells have also been ‘handpick’d’.
The band have built up a large US fan base after appearing on American talk show ‘Late Night with Jay Leno’ and performances at Lollapalooza, SXSW and the Bonnaroo Festival, plus sold out shows across the UK.

There will be a touch of 60’s rock folk and blues thanks to Buffalo Skinners, who BBC2’s Bob Harris, has described as simply “fantastic”; and maverick of the folk world, and York based singer-songwriter, Dan Webster will open the main stage with his band on the Saturday.

The full line up is:

Friday 28 September – Rick Whitter & Paul Banks Shed Seven Acoustic; The Howl & The Hum; Jade Helliwell

DAN OWEN has announced a string of live dates for October and November, following the release of his forthcoming debut album ‘Stay Awake With Me’ on August 17th.

ALBUM REVIEW: KLAMMER. – ‘You Have Been Processed’

0

Having reviewed the band’s last two singles (read the reviews of ‘Spiral Girl’ and ‘Modern God’) I received the news that an album was on the way with a great deal of anticipation.

The thing about KLAMMER is that while they operate within what we might call ‘the framework of post-punk’, the songs don’t sound the same, there’s variety. And as we shall see they even managed to surprise me on occasion.

OK so I’m an ex-goth (Is that possible do you ever stop being a goth, or is it one of those things that once you have turned to you can never leave?) so I come to this with what we might call a certain nostalgia. But what this isn’t is a retro-fest, it’s not a band slavishly copying bands from back in the day. This is a band who take those influences and make of them something distinctly up to date, distinctly of now.

Running through the album for the first (of many) times the things that stuck in my mind were the bass – the bass is really up there, driving things along – and the vocals – there is just the most wonderful range of ‘vocal techniques’ deployed here for your listening pleasure. The other thing that started to come through was the words, the words are really great.

So before we dive in, the singles are a given, I haven’t changed my mind about those at all, if you want to know what I thought of those tracks read the reviews OK. And this isn’t a track-by-track, it’s the highlights and surprises.

The album opener ‘Coast to Coast’ swoops in on a drone before igniting the afterburners with the most most wonderfully bass heavy intro I’ve heard in a long time. The thing about this track is that it just hammers into your head, it beats you into submission. But the twist here is that there is this delicate (delicate is of course relative, it’s heavy but it’s subtle) clever bit. This is going to set you up in fine fashion for the album.

The first surprise – at least for me as a newcomer to KLAMMER – ‘No Memory’ opens with something that sounds sort of like some sort of Pink Floyd track before diving headlong into something that’s almost more punk than post-punk. It’s all sort of jerky and hyper-rhythmic. It’s kinda Devo, sorta almost XTC. But there are these thrilling stabs of bass riff, those angular guitars.

For me ‘Mechanical Boy’ is one of the highlights of the album. But how to describe it, the best I can come up with is ‘epic post-punk ballad’. This thing is huge. It’s dark, it’s way dark. It’s just leaves you drained emotionally. And it has these guitar breaks that I just keep playing and playing.

‘Baddest Blocks’ is not what I was expecting. This is heavy. This is more punky. OK so there are hints of post-punk but you have to listen a few times to get those. And and I love the vocals on this track, they’re all of proclaimed and semi-spoken. This thing rocks; it rocks like hell.

‘Tonight’ oh you beautiful thing, you sinuous swooping pulsating thing. This just had me throwing shapes like the days of old within seconds, because this things is dance music, it’s music to twist and crawl to.

And another surprise, ‘Common Sense’ reminds me somewhat strangely of early Scritti Politti it has that halting slightly shambolic thing going for it at some points. But then it breaks out into something else entirely, something rather elegant.

Another epic ballad ‘Human Clay’ is a brooding dark track that just has this emotional weight. It’s so dark I actually found it difficult to listen to more than say three times in a row, so down did it leave me. This isn’t by the way any sort of criticism I love music that effects me this deeply.

The first time I heard album closer ‘A Long Cold Summer’ I actually wasn’t all that sure about it, there was something that just jarred with me. But after listening again a couple of times I found myself positively loving it. It’s a grower, at least it was for me. The things that jarred me on the first listen become the very things that I really liked about it. This is one of those bass heavy bass driven songs. It’s vaguely discordant in places. It has these sort of spoken singing vocals. It’s relentless, it just doesn’t stop. It has this slow build that starts almost at the start of the song. And then it fades out.

This a collection of songs without any fillers, it’s all good, it’s all incredibly good. The playing is way up there, the words are great and thought provoking. And like all great bands KLAMMER are not afraid to throw us the odd curve ball, songs that surprise.

So how to sum this up for you out there. Well if you’re into post-punk (that’s old style post-punk people) then I probably need to say nothing else than this is a must, it takes that genre in all it’s glorious various styles and makes them into something new, something up to date but retaining that direct connection to ‘back in the day’.

But look people if you’re not already a post-punk fan how am I going to persuade you to at least give this a go. I going to beg you to approach this with an open mind, drop those pre-conceived ideas of what post-punk is, and who it’s for. Perhaps you may want to think of it as good music, music played incredibly well. Songs with feeling, songs that are meant. The thing is that this album has so much of a range of sounds that there is going to be one that you like, one that makes you go back and listen to the others again.

The album can be streamed or downloaded from a variety of services or purchased from the band’s website on CD, vinyl or download.

The info

Klammer came to life in 2014, drawing from the members’ shared love for all things angular, dark, loud and melodic. The W.Yorks based quartet put a contemporary twist on the post-punk attitude. Although there’s plenty of hooks in their songs, there’s a dark and edgy broodiness coursing through the sound of the band.

They’ve gigged and toured with the likes of The Skids, The Undertones, Richie Ramone, The Membranes, Art Brut and played at Rebellion.

SINGLE REVIEW: Sifaka – ‘Still In Love’

0

While I gushed in a sort of restrained way about Sifaka’s last single ‘In The City’, and yes that was restrained, prepare yourselves for a full-on lovefest. For this, people, is beautiful, it’s glorious. It is frankly all kinds of sinuously sensual and sexy. It hits you way down in your soul, at the end you’re going to feel ripped apart and drained.

‘Whoa, hold on there’ I hear you say, ‘sensual and sexy?’. I tell you it’s in that pulsing bass line, that sinuous sax, that growling organ. It’s there in the vocals, oh so yearning, so heartfelt. He may be singing about still being in love but there’s frankly something else he’s yearning for. It’s there is the searing blues rock guitar this track builds to. Am I the only person to find a great blues rock solo something that gets to you? And that solo piles on the emotion to a point of overload.

It’s the build in this song that’s going to drag you in, mess with your emotions, and leave you in a sobbing heap, needing to hear it again, louder and louder until you are inside it, until each note of that solo hurts. Until the line ‘I don’t how to live my on own’ is branded into your soul. I am addicted to what this song does to me, oh so addicted.

On a serious ‘music reviewer’ thing I guess I ought to tell you what this sounds like – well people it’s soulful blues rock put simply. Although what Sifaka have done is write a blues song, this is a song that truly conveys the emotion, throw in the influences of the best soul ballads just to mess with your emotions that whole load more, and then sprinkle it with their thing, that vaguely west coast psychedelia sound. It puts in me in mind of early (and oh so the best) Whitesnake, that late soul blues period of Deep Purple, Love.

This is music that gets to you, that is beautiful and glorious. That reaches deep down inside you you and rips you apart.

The band have announced a huge Leeds headline show with Scruff Of The Neck, which will take place on 18/08/18 at The Lending Room. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased HERE

The info

Since forming in 2014 Sifaka have become an integral part of the vibrant Leeds music scene. Dubbed ‘soul rock’ their sound is raw, powerful and straight from the heart, sitting at the crossroads between the soulful sounds of Alabama Shakes and the heavy blues of Led Zeppelin.

Their mesmerising live show is a sweat-soaked rollercoaster of infectious grooves and soaring solos. At any one moment their music travels through Mardis Gras, CBGB’s in downtown New York and 60’s London.

Following on from a year supporting Kaiser Chiefs and Pete Doherty, and Imarhan and Melt Yourself down at the Brudenell Social Club the band are preparing to release three singles over the summer followed by a UK tour.

Sifaka are:

Danny Davis, Mike Deakin, Nicky Pilkington, Sam Wilson, Teddy Roberts

TOUR NEWS: Spear of Destiny announce ‘Second Life’ Tour September/October 2018

0

Hard to believe we know but it is true, Kirk Brandon has now been leading SPEAR OF DESTINY for 35 years. The band have announced their “Second Life” UK tour for September and October.

SPEAR OF DESTINY were formed in 1983 after the demise of Kirk Brandon’s post punk iconic rockers THEATRE OF HATE. (Brandon had also, before TOH, been the main man in every punk rockers favourite band of that era The Pack)

The current line up of Spear is the longest serving to date and features Adrian Portas (New Model Army / Sex Gang Children), Craig Adams (Sisters of Mercy / The Cult / The Mission) and Phil Martini (Jim Jones and the Righteous Mind) on drums. Long time Brandon cohort Steve Allan-Jones will be covering the keyboards.

On April 6th 2018 SPEAR OF DESTINY will release their 14th studio album “Tontine” The album has been fully funded from a private fan pre-sale of “Tontine”. The album will be officially released for Brandon’s own Eastersnow Recording Company label imprint and will be available on CD, Vinyl and Download.

The current live show pulls on songs from all 35+ years of SOD. The classic’s Liberator, Mickey, Rainmaker, The Wheel, Never Take Me Alive etc… are all found sitting closely alongside newer fan favourites such as Sputnik, Suicide God, Judas, Lucky Man & Berlin! Berlin!’.

As 2018 is the 35 anniversary of the band’s iconic debut long player “Grapes of Wrath” live shows throughout the year will most certainly feature a good smattering of GOW tracks for good measure.
