TOUR & VIDEO NEWS: Jim White September 2018 dates, video for ‘Playing Guitars’

0

JIM WHITE is set to return to the UK in September, playing End Of The Road Festival and Moseley Folk Festival along with a string of headlining shows, accompanied on guitar by Clive Barnes. Tickets are on sale now for the following shows:-

1 Sep – MOSELEY FOLK FESTIVAL
2 Sep – END OF THE ROAD FESTIVAL
3 Sep – GUILDFORD St Mary’s Church
4 Sep – EXETER Phoenix
5 Sep – BRISTOL Fleece
6 Sep – YORK Crescent
8 Sep – NEWCASTLE Gosforth Civic Theatre
9 Sep – EDINBURGH Voodoo Rooms
10 Sep – HEBDEN BRIDGE Trades Club
11 Sep – CAMBRIDGE Junction 2
12 Sep – LONDON Lexington

Jim tours in support of his sixth solo studio album, the bizarrely titled ‘Waffles, Triangles & Jesus’ – a mind-bending joy ride of sonic influences featuring a bevy of his hometown Athens’ roots musicians, including Cicada Rhythm, plus west coast indie darlings Dead Rock West and rock and roll maverick Holly Golightly.

Prior to ‘Waffles, Triangles & Jesus’, White released five eclectic, totally uncatagorisable albums plus another six even stranger side projects. Numerous songs from his back catalog have appeared both in film and television, with his Primus-esque Word-Mule being featured in Breaking Bad, and more recently his cautionary rocker Crash Into The Sun appearing Ray McKinnon’s highly praised Sundance Channel series Rectify.

UK fans may recognise White as the narrator and defacto tour guide for the award winning BBC documentary, Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus, a road movie set in the rural South, which the LA Times described as “Decidedly strange, delightfully demented.” Prior to becoming a musician White led an aimless, diverse life, working countless menial labor jobs: dishwasher, landscaper, lifeguard, cook, surfboard laminator, road builder, culminating with thirteen long years driving a taxi cab in New York City.

White is presently at work completing a memoir, Incidental Contact, based on a series of uncanny coincidences that befell him during his days driving that taxi in New York City. Two chapters of Incidental Contact, The Bottom and Superwhite, have been published in the literary music journal Radio Silence, with Superwhite being awarded a Pushcart Prize for short fiction. White was a pro surfer. He served as literary commentator for the National Endowment of the Arts. He was a European fashion model. Samuel Beckett once played a practical joke on him. There’s lots more non linear information that doesn’t really fit the usual bio format. But that’s Jim—he gets around.

Waffles, Triangles & Jesus is out now on Loose, available on 2LP, CD & digitally.

INTERVIEW & GIG NEWS: Paloma Faith headlines Summer Music Saturday at York Racecourse 30th June 2018, plus an interview with Paloma

0

Tickets for Summer Music Saturday at York Racecourse with Paloma Faith headlining are still available.

Ahead of her visit, Paloma said “I’m really looking forward to playing York Racecourse next summer, it’ll be one of the first chances I’ll get to play tracks from The Architect in the sunshine. I love a day out at the races too so can’t wait for it”

Tickets for Paloma Faith can be obtained from www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or calling 01904 620911.

The interview

By Neill Barston

Becoming a parent is just about the biggest event in anyone’s lives, bringing with it a raft of challenges and unforeseen scenarios that potentially pose the sternest of tests. For Paloma Faith, the experience of being a new mum may have left her wondering where her next night’s sleep might ever be coming from, yet it’s brought a renewed sense of purpose and focus to her music.

“I’m trying to juggle being a mother and a singer. I have no idea how I am managing, but I am somehow,” she laughs, recounting her whirlwind existence recording her fourth studio album.

The 36-year old Londoner has already amassed an enviable career over the past decade that has seen her become the only female artist beyond Adele to have three double platinum recordings to her name.

While it’s been a road requiring plenty of hard graft, her artfully soulful sound and quirky style have undoubtedly played their part in propelling the Hackney-born star to success. The singer’s latest offering, The Architect, follows boldly in its predecessors’ footsteps, showcasing her distinctive powerful vocals that have earned comparisons with everyone from 60’s icons such as Etta James and Billie Holiday, through to the late Amy Winehouse.

As she admits, she’s hoping her latest work, partly recorded in America, might yet crack the elusive holy grail of top slot in the album charts. If the slick, yet lyrically reflective lead single Crybaby is anything to go by, then the signs are indeed looking promising.

It seems the singer is enjoying a comparatively settled phase of her life living with French boyfriend Leyman Lahcine, and it’s apparent that starting a family has directly influenced her music.

“I do feel my approach to music has changed since I’ve become a parent – which does have an impact. With difficult things that are happening in the world, you feel protective and want to make things comfortable for your family.

“I think things are changing in our history and maybe not for the better, which is something I’m concerned about. I feel there’s a sense of duty to talk about events.”

Much like any other artist in the limelight, her rise has come with the perhaps inevitable burden of being followed around by the ever-hungry paparazzi.

Everyone from Hello magazine through to the national red-top national papers has been waiting to secure pictures of her new youngster, whom she is keen to shield from un-necessary public attention.

“I value my privacy more so than ever now, as it’s a real responsibility being a parent, and I want my child to know itself first rather than everyone else feeling that they know all about them.”

Such determination to do things on her own terms has proved a consistent theme throughout her career, and something that has helped her stand out from the crowd. As she recalls of her childhood in East London, the half-Spanish artist says that she always had something of a creative streak. However, it was far from obvious that she was destined to become a singer, with her initial studies being at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

“Growing up in Hackney, I was surrounded by lots of different types of music – from my mum, I remember listening to plenty of revolutionary music from the 60’s such as Bob Dylan, while my dad was really into jazz, which is where my interest in all that comes from.

“Later, when I was studying, I got into R and B dancehall as well, and originally I wanted to be dancer. Then I did my musical theatre, and I think that music just chose me,” she explains of her formative years.

From her early CV that spanned everything from being a life model, cabaret dancer and bartender, to a gig as a magician’s assistant, her rich experiences have offered plenty of tales and adventures to fuel her inventive songwriting.

As if to underline her determination, she famously walked out on a deal for a record contract when the agent watching her refused to stop texting on his phone. Needless to say, it was very much his loss, and the wider music industry’s gain, for Paloma then secured a major deal that set in motion her strikingly memorable debut album. To her credit, Do You Want The Truth or Something Beautiful? blazed a trail into the top 10, and proceeded to lodge in the album charts for the next 100 weeks. But how does she look back on it now?

“Well, that was nearly 10 years ago, and it was what it was. But I think it is great that I’ve managed to sustain a career as unfortunately not many people get to make more than one or two albums these days,” reflects the singer on what she feels is now an over-saturated market.

By her own admission, trying to sustain a fanbase and avoiding the trap of merely recreating a formula for previous hits has offered plenty of challenges. But as she enthuses, she is not one to rest on her laurels, and ‘likes to mix things up a bit’ which is certainly the case with her latest material.

While her towering vocal abilities have continued to garner contrasts with the late Amy Winehouse, it’s something Paloma is entirely at ease with.

“I’m flattered by comparisons to Amy. It’s not something I am offended by, though I am quite different.

“When she met me once, she asked if I played an instrument, but I said no, and she said that was a shame as she would really have liked someone like me in her group.

“I was a massive fan of hers, and after watching the documentary about her life, I actually wrote a song for her, Price of Fame, which is on the new album. Her death was such a tragedy,” adds the vocalist with a note of sadness.

Her down-to-earth manner is a breath of fresh air in an industry awash with egos, and her willingness to give something back was seen with her time on The Voice series. Beyond being a vocal mentor, she was determined to help those under her wing with additional songwriting classes.

As for her own career, having been nominated several times for a Brit Award, persistence paid off two years ago as she claimed a long-awaited win in the best female solo artist category. Being in an industry that is often quick to cast judgment, she felt there was a real sense of vindication in claiming the coveted accolade.

“It was amazing to win the Brit Award and to finally gain some acknowledgement. I come from a long line of people that haven’t really been acknowledged for what they did. I think there are a lot of people out there doing important work, like doctors and nurses who don’t get that recognition they should.”

With a major award to her name, there has been plenty of hype surrounding her latest release, bolstered by notable additions including an appearance from Samuel L Jackson and a duet with singer songwriter John Legend in the mix.

Besides the album, fans will have to wait a little longer for her next UK tour, which kicks off in March and she has announced a huge summer run of shows taking in Forest and Jockey Club Live events. It’s destined to feature some of Paloma’s trademark self-designed sets to spark the tone for a hit-packed series of shows.

“The only reason I do what I’m doing is because I love touring – as when I’m out there I am excited and feel that I’m in the right place,” adds the engaging singer, who may well have a little more to think about with a young child in tow, yet it won’t stop her from enjoying every single moment.

Yes indeed – the festival with its feet firmly off the ground is back… and now even bigger!

Cotton Clouds Festival has unveiled a whole extra day of music and good times to come as it expands into a two-day event for the very first time.

Landing amidst the bucolic hills of the Peak District National Park this Summer, Cotton Clouds Festival 2018 will be nestling itself into one of the cosiest festival settings for not just one, but two blissful days – Friday 17th August (* Just added *) + Saturday 18th August.

And with this announcement, Cotton Clouds can now unveil a raft of stunning new acts who will be pitching up with you on the Friday night…

FRIDAY LINE UP

“Oh, Lucky you!”…
Headlining the Cotton Clouds Main Stage on the Friday night, the festival is over the moon to be welcoming: THE LIGHTNING SEEDS.

The brainchild and baby of legendary Liverpudlian Ian Broudie, The Lightning Seeds have been an indisputable presence on the guitar pop landscape since their genesis in 1989. From the release of their top 20 denting debut album ‘Cloudcuckooland’, the vibrant and gently psychedelic pop pennings of Broudie & Co. saw the band notch up oodles of unforgettable hits right from the get-go. Bask in the warm glow of the likes of ‘Pure’, ‘Change’, ’Lucky You’, ‘The Life Of Riley’, and (if it’s not too soon after this year’s World Cup of course), ‘Three Lions’ as this seminal band raise the roof on the first Friday of Cotton Clouds.

Earlier in the evening, Platinum-selling pin-ups THE PIGEON DETECTIVES will be swooping in with a fun-filled set of their renegade indie anthems. Riding high on the warm reception to their fifth studio album, 2017’s ‘Broken Glances’, the hard-working Leeds lads have been delivering the goods time and time again since their inception in 2004. Expect to hear new tunes and old favourites including ‘Take Her Back’, ‘This Is An Emergency’, ‘I Found Out’ and more.

A meeting of minds that is sure to stun – CHALI 2NA & KRAFTY KUTS, will be bringing their irrepressible collaboration to the festival too. Boasting a repertoire brimful with the old school hip hop staples of the Jurassic 5 icon, plus the break-beat cuts of Krafty’s solo outings, the duo’s live sets see them unearthing the treasures of their shimmering catalogues, whilst winning crowds over with the infectious new material of their superb recent album together: ‘All 4 Corners’.

Plus, a man who surely needs no introduction in these parts, Cotton Clouds is overwhelmed to be welcoming the exceptional BADLY DRAWN BOY to the Friday bill. A beloved Mancunian who captured the nation’s hearts with his Mercury Music Prize winning debut album: ‘The Hour of Bewilderbeast’, the artist AKA Damon Gough will be stopping by to perform a set of his endlessly earnest and endearing alt-folk gems.

Plus, cutting the ribbon at this year’s festival, Cotton Clouds is pleased to present CAVANA. Having already earned themselves a storming reputation on the Manchester circuit for their impassioned live performances, the band channel influences including The Cribs, King Krule and Wolf Alice into an aggressive indie rock sound that’s sure to kick off proceedings with a mighty bang.

EP REVIEW: Bluehearts & The Broken Souls – ‘Broken Woman’

0

So when Sheffield’s Bluehearts & The Broken Souls got in contact and described themselves as a heavy blues rock band I had this idea of what I would hear in my head. What I actually heard in the first track I listened to wasn’t really at all what I had expected. So yes while the basic structure of heavy blues rock was there, there was also something else. Something else I couldn’t put a finger on until it came to me in a flash. It’s in the heavy on the bass rumble, the bass grunge, the grind. It reminded me just the tiniest bit of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

The track that grabbed my attention was the title track of the EP ‘Broken Woman’. This is grinding stuff, it’s sludge slow. It’s blues rock as played by Samothrace. And then suddenly it explodes If you’re expecting guitar pyrotechnics there isn’t at least until the end. But strangely it’s all the more effective for that, the weight of this thing, you feel it pushing you down.

‘Another Life’ is all slide-y, it’s swampy as fuck. The drums pummel away. And it slows down not up, I like that a lot, a whole lot. And then it changes again and again. You just never know what’s coming next.

‘You’re My Saviour’ sounds a little like early Whitesnake or possibly even Bad Company, it’s more traditionally blues rock. But there’s something about it I just can’t exactly put my finger on that makes me like this a whole lot. It might be the rather fine stuttering guitar breaks, it may be the vocals.

We back with way heavy for ‘Give Me A Sign’. It’s way way slow at the start, there’s some fine fine vocals. Stuff to like a lot – the rather fine guitar on this track, the drumming, that locked in groove.

While Bluehearts & The Broken Souls’ music may have all those heavy blues rock boxes ticked – screaming vocals, riffs to die for, guitar pyrotechnics – they bring something that is very much their own to the genre. This isn’t blues rock for the fainthearted, it’s grinding, swampy and way way way heavy, with barely a let-up. It’s blues rock for the brave.

SINGLE REVIEW: Waterways – ‘More Human Than Human’

0

Ah ‘instrumental progressive post rock’, something that you don’t come across too often, and this is the first track that falls into this genre I’ve reviewed. Let’s say right away that this track is haunting, emotional and hugely effective.

So it does that quiet loud thing that alternative rock does, but obviously there’s no vocals, so what’s there to replace those. In this case there is the most fantastic guitar – it’s quietly plucked, it’s ringing out, it sears, it spears its way into your ears. Listened to loud this thing is mind-blowing. The other thing that hits you about this track is the drums, the drumming is just amazing. It’s not overdone but it’s inventive, it’s musical.

The quiet bits are sort of pastoral – well at least that’s how I think of them – in feel, the loud bits are just stunning. But even with that searing guitar, somehow it left me feeling quite quite calm. It’s oddly emotional, sometimes instrumentals can just be musically effective and fantastic but lack any feeling, this track has feeling in spades.

There were times, and to be honest quite a lot of times, where I was reminded of early King Crimson (‘Larks’ Tongues In Aspic’ period). So if that’s your sort of thing – and it is for me – this track is for you.

This track by Waterways surprised me hugely, I fully expected to be left thinking this is great from a playing point of view – and it is – but I didn’t expect to be so moved.

The single can be streamed or purchased via the links on this page: https://songwhip.com/artist/waterways

SINGLE REVIEW: Regan – ‘What Do You Want’

0

So I thought I’d got Regan, I thought I knew what to expect from a new release from the band. ‘What Do You Want’ has thrown all that out of the window. So yeah, while it has that Regan metal/alt-rock thing, this thing is seven minutes long. Yep, you read that right, seven minutes of pounding rock.

It opens with something that threw me slightly, which is a short out and out punk intro but this is just an appetiser. What comes after is perhaps, at least to my ears, slightly more metal than alt-rock in feel than Regan’s previous tracks. Although thankfully what is still present and correct is those tuneful vocals. And I loved the moments when those vocals just let go, boy that sounded great. Also present in spades is the great drumming I’d expect from Regan.

This track has a tune that will drill it’s way into your head. And it has riffs that just don’t stop. What it also has is guitar, guitar that roars. And in the final minutes of the track it bloody soars, it kicks arse, it screams. Frankly no guitar should suffer that sort of abuse. And you’re not going to get bored because this thing keeps changing – there’s riffs coming at you from all sorts of directions, it has these thrilling breakdowns that give you a break from the pounding and then we are off again.

This thing is fucking epic people.

And there’s a bonus in the package, an acoustic track called ‘Show Me’. It’s strange hearing a band that you had thought of as being ‘hard rocking guys’ play something like this. And we have to bear in mind that it’s marked as a demo (at least it is on Spotify) so it’s a little rough around the edges. I loved the vocals which my friend who I played the track to described as ‘yearning’. And it has these lovely little delicate guitar parts. I rather liked it to be honest. Nice one.

SINGLE REVIEW: Green Gardens – ‘Face’

0

I was rather taken by Green Gardens last single ‘I’ve Wanted’ and so I was looking forward to a new release. Although the band had warned me that this would be different and a departure from the hooky debut single, this was not quite what I expected.

I’ve been searching for that one single word to describe this and I’ve decided on ‘classy pop’ (and yes I know that’s two words but I’m taking music reviewer’s privilege on that). But there’s more, it’s classy in that sort of 80s classic pop vein. OK so there’s a vaguely indie feel going on, but there are hints of say The Associates, perhaps even ABC or The Divine Comedy there. Oh and perhaps even Aztec Camera, it has that mid-tempo rather country feel as well.

As you’d expect – well I was expecting it – there are some frankly gorgeous vocals on this track. The lead vocal has this slightly affected thing going on which gave me that Associates feel. And there is this rather great section with harmonies. And the thing that really stood out on my first listen was the – lets call it – rather retro guitar sound of the two guitar breaks.

The band themselves say the song “settles in a darker, more nostalgic corner of the bands ever-developing sound. ‘Face’ is a song about falling and human resilience”. And while it’s darker than ‘I’ve Wanted’ it’s certainly not dark dark, it sounds more thoughtful and lyrically is deeper.

In my review of the first single I suggested that it could be best enjoyed with a group of friends, ‘Face’ isn’t that sort of track, perhaps it fits into that post evening out final drink phase of a night with a smaller group of closer friends, it has that intimate feel.

This is frankly rather lovely thing, it’s great classy classic pop and it’s pretty near as damn it perfect.

‘Face’ can be found in all the usual places online as well as a FREE download on Bandcamp.

The info

The band say ‘Leftfield rockers Green Gardens, a blossoming Leeds band, embody an impromptu spirit. With funky riffs and exhilarating choruses, Green Gardens are as much a vehicle of energy as they are an outlet of true expression. Real exploratory sincerity sets them apart from the tiring ‘boys with guitars’ formula as darker themes simmer behind the facade of a smiling four piece in a mixture of old school and current influences’.
