FESTIVAL NEWS: Jon McClure completes his hand picked Tramlines Leadmill Stage line-up with Spring King and Sophie and the Giants

0
Spring King

As Tramlines celebrates their 10th birthday party, they have introduced some all new festival features for 2018! This is exemplified by the brand new Leadmill Live Stage that features live music and comedians during the daytime and is exclusively curated by Jon McClure of Reverend and the Makers on the Sunday.

Jon McClure, the charismatic frontman of local legends, Reverend and the Makers completes his curation of the Leadmill Stage on Sunday 22nd July with the addition of Spring King and Sophie and the Giants who will join headliner Tom Grennan and Sheafs.

Originating in Macclesfield, Spring King are a four-piece art-pop-punk bank who shot to fame following their appearance at SXSW in 2015. After supporting the Kaiser Chiefs ‘Stay Together Tour’ in 2017 they have a host of festival appearances coming up in 2018 including a return performance at Tramlines after their appearance last year.

Sophie and the Giants are a new band straight out of Sheffield, hotly tipped by the Rev for great things. Despite forming last year they have already made significant forays into the world of music touring with Reverend and the Makers, The Rifles, Findlay and Yonaka. Their debut single ‘Monsters’ was released in April filled with roaring guitars and a fem-punk attitude from the lead singer Sophie Scott.

Jon has also curated a side-splitting comedy line which up is headlined by local legend John Shuttleworth who will be showcasing his unshakeable faith in his own musical compositions which are patchy at best! Joining John will be Britain’s only ‘goth, lesbian, transsexual comedian’, Bethany Black with her uniquely dark humour.

“I am very excited to be bringing the best new music to tramlines for my stage curation. Stoked to be working with my friends at the Leadmill and also having Tom Grennan and Sophie and the Giants there will be ace as they are artists I have worked with previously. All the bands are ace. See u down the front!” – Jon McClure

The Leadmill Stage is a completely new addition to Tramlines Festival. The Leadmill is Sheffield’s longest running live music venue and nightclub. Since opening in 1980 it has become a massively important fixture on the live music circuit, described by Franz Ferdinand as a ‘rite of passage’ for any act with Pulp, Culture Club, Suede, Arctic Monkeys, Stone Roses, The Killers, The Strokes and thousands more gracing their stage over the years.

Of course, these new offerings come on top of the festival’s hard hitting lineup. Next to music from Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Craig David’s TS5, Blossoms, De La Soul, Jake Bugg, Reverend and The Makers, Stefflon Don, Mystery Jets, Rat Boy, The Sherlocks, Mabel, The Magic Gang, Pale Waves and more, there is also comedy from Henning Wehn, John Shuttleworth, Bethany Black, Tom Stade and plenty of others.

This all plays out across four main stages that includes a stage hosted by iconic local venue the Leadmill, plus an all new Library Stage focusing on contemporary, breaking talent. Also expect great food and drink, special treats from Sheffield’s local breweries and much more.

All this makes Tramlines excellent value with weekend tickets costing £79 plus booking fee and under 12s go for free. Tickets are available now from www.tramlines.org.uk.

SINGLE REVIEW: Zach Pygall – ‘Blue Skies’

0

I prefer my singer/writers to let the song do the talking, and Zach certainly delivers on this. His vocals are just simple and not overblown, I like that, I like that a lot. And although ‘Blue Skies’ could be described as Americana he sings in his native North East accent which certainly gets your attention.

This song is just so earwormy, it has this chorus which has lodged itself in my head and just won’t be dislodged – I even found it singing in my head at a gig the other day. I really like the song but I couldn’t think quite how to say why, so I asked my friend. He said “well it’s a simple song really isn’t it, but it’s sang and played really well”. Couldn’t have put it better myself. What he failed to mention is the rather great guitar break and the fact that I, and indeed anyone else I’ve played it to, has been completely unable to stop some sort toe-tapping, head sway or even joining in with the chorus.

Sometimes what you need is just a great song, sang and played really well. ‘’Blue Skies’ is there to meet that need.

SINGLE REVIEW: The Clouded Lights – ‘Night of the Underdog’

0

OK so while the Clouded Nights might describe themselves as an indie rock band this reminded me of nothing less than Love (a lot to live up to there I know). It’s that slight almost latin swing to the track. It’s the vocals. It’s the mix of acoustic and electric guitar. It’s basically all kinds of psychedelic poppy rock.

It starts in that acoustic guitar, vocals, really nice electric guitar line sort of way. And then the drums come in and it stands to swing. And then it goes all driving rhythm, crashing guitar. This thing is wonderful. And yeah if you had to, really had to, there is slight indie guitar sound thing going on, but you have to listen really hard to get that. I don’t really get ‘moody indie rock’ unless I listen really hard, but then again the gap between some some indie and psychedelic pop is to be honest pretty small.

It’s got a tune in spades, great vocals, fantastic dynamics, it soars, it’s danceable. It’s basically absolutely fab gear.

‘Night of the Underdog’ is availabled on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Music and all other
major music providers.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Cowboy Junkies release ‘All That Reckoning’ 13th July, dates November 2018

0

“It’s a deeper and a more complete record than we’ve ever done before. We’ve always tried to make records that are relevant to who we are as people. … These songs are about reckoning on a personal level and reckoning on a social level.” – Michael Timmins

Cowboy Junkies will release ‘All That Reckoning’, the band’s first new recording since ‘The Wilderness’ (2012) on July 13, 2018 via Proper Records. Pre-order HERE.

Whether commenting on the fragile state of the world or on personal relationships, this new collection of songs encourages the listener to take notice. It also may be the most powerful album Cowboy Junkies have yet recorded.

Their now classic album, ‘The Trinity Session’ celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. On its release in 1988, it was like a whisper that cut through the noise and Cowboy Junkies proved that there was an audience waiting for something quiet, beautiful and reflective, selling more than a million copies. For over 30 years, Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique vision, creating a critically acclaimed body of work that has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty.

In addition to The Trinity Session, albums like Pale Sun, Crescent Moon (1993), Lay It Down (1996) and more recently, Open (2001), and At the End of Paths Taken (2007) chronicle a creative journey reflecting the independent road the band has elected to travel.

Cowboy Junkies will make a very welcome return to the UK for live dates in November as follows:

Nov 9 Glasgow, Mitchell Theatre
Nov 10 Manchester, RNCM
Nov 11 London, The Bridge

SINGLE & EP NEWS: Luna Pines release ‘Spring’, announce debut EP ‘The House We Lived In’ out 1st June

0

Originally formed by 3 passionate female Leeds based producers, Luna Pines showcase modern electronica and refined dream pop and mix it with ambient, almost post-rock echoes. Influences ranging from Explosions In The Sky to Beach House can be felt across their debut EP ‘The House We Lived In’ that is due June 1st. Today, the band have released their new single taken from it, ‘Spring’.

Luna Pines’ sound travels through landscapes of 80’s synth-wave & eccentric beats, to post-rock inspired, soundtrack–esque atmospheres. A deeply sensitive tone is felt in new single ‘Spring’ that serves as a spacious, indulgent moment that explores painful issues such as death and loss in a mask of Cocteau Twins inspired melodies. The track is taken from their upcoming EP that is due out June 1st of this year.

Having played sold out local shows at prestigious venues like Belgrave in Leeds last year, the five piece take influence from acts like Daughter, The Japanese House, and James Blake, creating a nostalgic air of ambience, with soaring synths and heavy bass lines, reminding listeners of soundtracks similar to the brilliant ‘Drive’ score by Cliff Martinez. The band produces and mixes all their own material, making them even more of a force to be reckoned with inside of the brilliant and eclectic Leeds music scene. Having gained attention from various publications and BBC Introducing with their last two singles, they are gearing up to play venues across the UK and use this solid foundation to take their music to new heights this year.

Dusty Pop Entertainment Presents:
Luna Pines – 3rd June – Oporto, Leeds
Support from Laminate Pet Animal, In The Morning Lights & Denton Thrift.
TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE

Luna Pines is:
Holly Matthews – Vocals
Ryan Hawkins – Guitar/Vocals
Lotte van de Berg – Keys/Pads/Sampling

TOUR NEWS: Black Grape announce Winter 2018 tour

0

Following the success of their album ‘Pop Voodoo’ which showcased the band’s first new material in 20 years the band announce a series of shows in the UK.

As Irvine Welsh writes in the band’s biography: I’m delighted to report that Black Grape are back on the road, and with new album Pop Voodoo that really does rock the fuck out of the discotheque. Shaun’s word play has never been deployed to such devastating effect, and he scores a bullseye whether he hits the obvious targets (Trump), and the more obscure ones…well, find out for yourself. The world is in a bit of a state right now, and bullshit reigns more than ever, and perversely disguised as candour. We need Manc street sass, intelligence and wit more than ever right now. This album has that in spades.

Shaun and Kermit teamed up with producer Youth on the album, who has previously worked with The Verve, U2, Primal Scream, Guns N’ Roses, Pink Floyd and Depeche Mode to name but a few.

Last year saw them play festival dates and arena shows with Richard Ashcroft. The 2018 tour will see them playing songs from the ‘Pop Voodoo’ album alongside the well loved classics.

Ahead of the tour Shaun Ryder added: ‘Looking forward to getting back out on the road with Kermit for the Black Grape party – playing some new songs and of course some old favourites’

Widely regarded as one of the most innovative and iconic bands of the last twenty years… Black Grape!

SINGLE REVIEW: Apollo Junction – ‘Begin’

0

On paper Apollo Junction’s new single ‘Begin’ isn’t something that I’d like at all. The band are described as being ‘electro-dance indie’ which might have put me off. However (and luckily) I’d had the pleasure of seeing them play at Bingley in 2015 so I had some idea of what I’d hear.

What I didn’t expect was to be quite so bloody taken by this track, it’s huge people – the band frankly don’t hold anything back here. It has a chorus you live for. It soars, it’s full of energy, so full of energy that you feel frankly exhausted by the end of it. And that middle eight with that piano, wow.

Yep you could, if you’re feeling picky, say that it employs all those indie dance track things but hell, don’t stop and analyse this thing. This is a huge blast of good times not something to sit and work out quite what the band have done with the drums there, or how they added a wooshing keyboard there. It’s something to be enjoyed as a whole, a joyous whole.

Listen. Dance. Be uplifted. Enjoy it. And that’s an order.

SINGLE REVIEW: LELO – ‘I Looked At The Sun’

0

I absolutely loved LELO’s last single ‘Breathing’ so I leapt at the chance of reviewing this. So before I get into the review first some information. This track features backing vocal from Leed’s band Marsicans.

This is dreamy, it takes you on a trip. It’s fuller in sound than ‘Breathing’ but it still has that simplicity, a sense that no sound is there unless it’s contributing to the track. It has, like ‘Breathing’, this atmosphere of calmness. It has a melody that gets into your skull, but then it has these quieter moments, moments of washes of sound that just feel calming. It sort of has, and I can think of no other way of saying this, a feeling of slow motion film.

There is one strange moment in this track – suddenly and for no reason I can think of there is is this rather strange sound. It sounds like a bird call. There is only one, it only happens once but for some strange reason it makes complete sense that it is there.

If somebody absolutely forced me to say what I thought influenced the sounds of this track I might mention a whole load of 80s synth bands but that wouldn’t be that fair because LELO has taken those, throw in a whole lot more, and what results is something that is very much original.

What I think this is is classic pop, pop that is crafted with skill and attention to detail. Pop that reminds me of those classic pop moments from way back when, when pop was considered to be a ‘valid art form’ and not just a throw away thing. Please understand that when I describe it as classic pop this is a compliment. I might even go as far as to say that this is damn near perfect.
