EP REVIEW: Bear Chest – ‘Leather and Sweat’

0

Bear Chest promise us ‘beefy riffs’ and ‘unadulterated sounds of the 70’s’. Well they ain’t fucking kidding people. This thing holds the heaviest music I’ve heard in ages. It’s just the unholiest mix of the more raucous side of alternative rock, sludge – think Samothrace, 70’s heavy metal – think Judas Priest, think Black Sabbath, early 80’s metal in places – think Metallicia, and that punky heavy rock – think Motorhead. This is music to demolish houses to, your neighbour’s car will be in small small pieces after you’ve ripped it apart just to shake out the sound from your head. Listening to this loud is like beating your head against a brick wall but you love it, you just want it not to stop.

The EP opener ‘Sphynx’ starts with bass, bass so low you feel it in your stomach. There is this small section of vaguely Egyptian sound and then it just let’s go. It’s sludge-y slow. It’s all low, way low, this thing is so bass heavy. The drums batter you into submission. And those vocals are frankly scary. The riffs on this track just batter into you.

‘Hinge’ starts out sounding like an early Motorhead track. And then, shit, it’s this punky rock thing. The guitars squeal and roar in the most fantastic way. Yep there is this alternative rock thing going on but this just gives it an edge. It’s raw, it’s raucous, it fucking rocks. But this thing seeps into your head, you suddenly find yourself roaring along to the song.

With ‘The Gout’ we are back in sludge-y territory, this is slow, way slow, it really grinds. And this thing doesn’t speed up, it slows down, it slows down to a point of almost stopping. And then it does stop. It’s epic, huge. The absolute highlight of the EP for me.

‘Reign’ is almost refined, yep there’s the bass heavy riffing, but there’s harmonies on the vocals (they’re way back but listen). it’s almost ‘Kashmir’ like in feel, it has that hypnotic thing going on. And the break, boy is that nice. The guitar in this is incredible, it’s sustained and ‘meaty’ (look I just had to put that in quotes, that’s just too 70s for words).

I love the tracks on this EP, they take me back to my youth when heavy meant heavy, when rock meant raucous, and when neighbours complained to my parents as I turned up my sound system. But, and it’s a big but, this ain’t no pure retro fest. Yep, 70s/80s rock sounds run through these but it’s filtered through alternative rock – there are hints of Muse, of The White Stripes even, going on – it has vague hints of post-hardcore. There’s even hints of System of a Down in places. It’s clever (not sure the band would thank me for that but it is), it’s original, it’s incredibly well put together and played. And listen these songs have tunes, listen hard enough and there are tunes, you can hum them, well I know I find myself doing that, perhaps I just have the strangest idea of what a tune is.

This is music that is meant to be played loud, way loud, loud enough to annoy the outskirts of the town you live in. So put it on, turn it way up, assume a suitable 70s/80s rock pose and bloody rock out people.

TOUR NEWS: Rick Wakeman Piano Odyssey tour Autumn/Winter 2018

0

Following the hugely successful Piano Portraits tour last year, in support of the album of the same name, Rick Wakeman will return in Autumn 2018 with a new show based on the follow up release, entitled Piano Odyssey. The fourteen-date tour will feature even more classic tracks given Rick’s unique piano treatment, and will travel to towns and cities not previously visited in 2017.

Rick says, “In the footsteps of Piano Portraits, the new album Piano Odyssey features a collection of music old and new that includes some particular favourites of mine. I’m looking forward to performing tracks from it live on my own odyssey around the UK in the autumn!”

Upon the release of his Piano Portraits album in January 2017, the YES keyboardist made chart history, becoming the first solo piano album to enter the UK’s Top 10, eventually reaching number 6. Inspired by the unprecedented public reaction to his cover of Bowie’s Life On Mars on BBC Radio 2 a year earlier, the album features instrumental versions of hits that Rick was originally involved with, such as Space Oddity and Morning Has Broken, as well as others which he chose for their melodies, including Stairway To Heaven and Help!.

The 2018 concerts will be based on a selection of tracks from both Piano Odyssey and Piano Portraits, showcasing music that has a special connection with Rick’s own personal musical journey, all accompanied by his hilarious memories and anecdotes about the tunes, plus a few musical surprises.

In December, an additional special Christmas tour will follow, in which the setlist will be given a distinctly seasonal twist. Expect a night of beautiful piano arrangements, interspersed with Wakeman’s renowned comedy interludes.

Tickets for both runs of the tour are available at
myticket.co.uk, and prices will begin at £29.50.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: PARCELS ‘TIEDUPRIGHTNOW’ out now, dates November 2018

0

PARCELS return with irresistible new single ‘TIEDUPRIGHTNOW’, out now on Kitsuné / Because Music.

This follows a breakout 2017 for the Berlin-based Australian five-piece, who have already surpassed 50 million streams, sold out sizeable shows worldwide (including a date at London’s Koko, on top of touring with Phoenix) and made their US TV debut on Conan. Currently completing work on their debut album (which is expected to be released later this year), Parcels have confirmed early festival appearances at the likes of All Points East, with news of further live plans to follow soon.

‘TIEDUPRIGHTNOW’ is Parcels’ most instantly infectious cut to date, mixing crate-digging disco grooves, a taut indie sensibility and effortlessly uplifting harmonies into immaculate modern pop. Describing the track, Parcels say: “We recorded Tieduprightnow in a Berlin studio, we had just lived out 6 months of German winter without even a hint of sun. But during this session it was the start of spring and the first rays began to peak through our window. The video is a homage to our roots. We all liked the idea of playing with the Australian stereotype, how the world views Australia and how we fit into that. We drive through our original hometown Byron Bay, the quintessential Australian surf paradise, and observe what it means to be Australian.“ Director Beatrice Pegard also comments on the video: “Northern NSW and Byron Bay are coastal areas that are currently being destroyed by profit-motivated policies and lobbies, and where marine life and ecosystems are disappearing at an alarming rate. The Australian lifestyle as we know it, the joys of summer, of surfing and living by the beach would not be much without its marine ecosystem and wildlife.”

If a chance encounter with the world’s most reclusive robots offered the band a surprise break, ‘TIEDUPRIGHTNOW’ more than confirms Parcels’ early promise as one of the most vibrant and vital new bands around. Already building a truly global, musically-diverse audience, Parcels are still-just-20-year-olds Louie Swain (keyboards), Patrick Hetherington (keyboards), Noah Hill (bass), Anataole Serret (percussion) and Jules Crommelin (guitar). Three years ago, the Byron Bay schoolmates made the big leap of moving to Berlin, finding in one Europe’s most creative cities the prospects that equalled their ambition. Parcels’ early sound suitably reflects this ability to travel, and transform yourself: following an eclectic thread from The Beach Boys and Chic through to yacht rock heroes like Steely Dan and local heroes Tame Impala, all the while blending elements of electronica, funk, yacht rock and tirelessly-drilled live musicianship into classic but contemporary pop. It’s in their Berlin exile – and its long history of creative breakthroughs – that the alchemy which makes Parcels so refreshing first crystallised. Theirs is a maniacal taste for perfection when it comes to production, composition and arrangement, with a live show so accomplished that Daft Punk offered to work with them on the spot (the first time the duo have chosen an emerging act to add to their list of collaborators, which also includes the likes of Kanye, The Weeknd and Pharrell).

After a long, tough winter – though perhaps tougher in Berlin, and arguably tougher still for homesick Australians in Berlin – ‘TIEDUPRIGHTNOW’ is a tantalising glimpse of good times ahead. On that, and so much more, Parcels look set to keep delivering the goods.

TOUR NEWS: Sunflower Bean dates August-December 2018

New York trio SUNFLOWER BEAN (Jacob Faber, Julia Cumming and Nick Kivlen) have just released their second record, Twentytwo in Blue, and recently completed a month long UK and European tour. Today they announce that they will play a further 12 shows across the UK in November and December 2018.

Sunflower Bean released Twentytwo in Blue on March 23rd – when all members of the band were 22 years old – which comes almost two years and two months after the release of their critically acclaimed 2016 debut album Human Ceremony. Co-produced by Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jacob Portrait (who also mixed the record) and HC-producer Matt Molnar of Friends, Twentytwo in Blue shows Sunflower Bean stay true to their guitar band core and classic rock-inspired roots, while exploring new sonic textures with more direct and progressive themes. Unlike their debut, which was essentially a compilation of songs Sunflower Bean wrote while still in their teens, Twentytwo in Blue was made in the year between December 2016 and December 2017 and showcases how far the band has come since playing together in their high school days. Order Twentytwo in Blue, HERE.

BOOK NEWS: Joolz Denby -award winning novelist, artist, tattooist and co-founder of New Model Army shares her autobiography via Facebook

0

Author, poet, artist, tattooist, band manager and women’s rights advocate, it is safe to say that one way or another – you will have heard the name Joolz Denby.

In 2014 Joolz was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction, before that signed to Harper Collins when she won New Crimewriter Of The Year, before that she a renowned poet and if you were lucky (or old enough) to have lived through the Eighties, then you may likely know Joolz as a sub-cult icon, ‘It’ girl and style trend setter in the Goth/Post-Punk scene, and of course, last but not least, as the in house artist, music, manager and collaborator for legendary international cult-band New Model Army.

Now, Joolz has announced that she is serialising her long awaited and hard biting autobiography via a Facebook group. She is focusing on her turbulent and intensely creative personal life, her ground breaking time as a woman working in rock music, as a spoken word poet through the Eighties, a novelist through the Nineties and a tattoo artist through the 00’s. Alongside this, Joolz will also be sharing stories from the 38 year association with New Model Army, including the truth behind ‘that’ t-shirt, which famously got the band blacklisted from Top Of The Pops and how her scribbled-on-the-back-of-an-envelope business plan for the band ensured them an unbroken decades long career – Joolz’ memoirs are engaging, honest, scary, revealing, funny and at times, vunerable and wholly relatable.

Says Joolz – ‘It’s 2018, writers need to use all the tools and avenues they can to share their writings. Majority of people use some form of social media, it’s important to reach people, not only the way they want it, but also where they want it – short, sharp and engaging. After all these years, I’m finally writing my life story – and its been a crazy, full tilt boogie – on my smartphone and posting it in serial form. I’m overwhelmed and humbled by the response’.

So, how can you get in on the action? Just subscribe to Joolz’ Facebook Page and ask to join the Group, The Memory Box: Stories Of Light And Dark, which has been described as ‘absolutely gripping’ and a ‘must read’ by group members.

ALBUM REVIEW: Shatner’s Bassoon – ‘Disco Erosion’

0

How in the hell do you review a band like Shatner’s Bassoon? It’s going to hard to convey exactly what they sound like, but I feel compelled to review it, to introduce you to the brilliance of this Leeds band’s music.

In reviewing my options for quite how to approach this I looked at some other reviews, they vary. Some reviewers take a soundbite approach where they just go for a starling phrase – the most memorable of these being ‘demonic garglings and cacklings, or what sounds like a monkey eating cornflakes overlaid by cool Fender Rhodes licks’, well yes but this doesn’t exactly help anyone who hasn’t heard them work out whether they like them. And basically does anyone really know what a monkey eating cornflakes exactly sounds like, not me. Whereas some analyse each individual track almost sound by sound, but this isn’t gong to help either really.

I really like Shatner’s Bassoon but defining exactly why is hard, really hard. If pushed I might say “Because I just do”. That doesn’t help you much either does it, unless you have some idea of what music I like and why, that’s just not helpful, and I like so many different types of music that it’s almost easier to say what I don’t like. So after much listening to this new album, and frankly probably irritating the hell out of my neighbours, I decided to actually really listen to it and try and work out why I like this band.

So OK at least some of their sound is avant-garde jazz of an improvised nature. I like jazz, I’ve been listening to it from a very early age – look I didn’t start with the difficult stuff, my Dad started me on New Orleans marching band stuff at an early age, he worked up to the more difficult stuff over time. I like that difficult to listen to stuff – bebop, modern improvised jazz, that sort of thing. And they use basically what are jazz band instruments – saxophones and clarinets feature for example. And yet that jazz sound is filtered through what could broadly be called rock of various types.

So in their music I hear stuff that I like influencing it. I’m hearing absolutely tons of Zappa type sounds and structures. I hear hints of the Hedvig Mollestad Trio (a jazz-prog band that use electric guitars in a ‘traditional jazz trio’ format. By the way HMT rock, they rock big time). I hear the angularity of Devo, the acid improvisational psychedelia of say Gong, the stop-start fairgroundy punkish sounds of early Cardiacs. And some vaguely classic prog sounds somewhere there – there’s one part of one track that almost sounds like Nektar. There are hints of Van Der Graaf Generator – perhaps the rather more raucous tracks rather than the more delicate material. There are bits that sound like sludge played by a jazz band. And rather bizarrely The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, or perhaps not at all bizarrely.

So rather strangely I’ve just – honest, didn’t read it before – actually read the press release that comes with the review link and it says

“The result is a glitchy and deranged carnival of paranoia, which blends influences from the likes of Mr. Bungle, Frank Zappa, The Cardiacs, Tim Berne, John Zorn, Man From Uranus and Fred Frith”

This throws in a few more sounds I hadn’t picked up on, but couldn’t disagree with at all. As an aside I might (and will) just correct the writer of this release who calls Cardiacs ‘The Cardiacs’. Rant starts. Never were a ‘The’ band at all. Always were just Cardiacs – apart from the period where they were called Cardiac Arrest. Try saying The Cardiacs on the Cardiacs Facebook Group and you’ll see what happens. Rant over.

To actually review each of the four tracks individually – they vary from being around eight minutes long to almost 13 minutes long – would be almost pointless. I’d end up reviewing the tracks note-by-note. So I’m not going to do that.

The band have released one of the tracks as a single – it’s the shortest one – so give that a go and you’ll hear what they sound like.

Clearly this isn’t easy-listening music – it’s wild, disconcerting, complex and confusing. For the first few minutes you may find yourself just chanting ‘no I can’t listen to this any more’ over and over again but suddenly you start hearing the structures in the tracks, sounds that’ll just make you smile, and things that make you think ‘hey wait a minute that’s brilliant’. And yes, this is music with a disturbing edge, but that’s not a bad thing, not all music should be obvious, easy and happy. And it is music that rewards repeated listening – the more you listen the more you hear.

The info

Steeped in malfunctioning improvisation, passive-aggressive minimalism, surreal avant-punk and free jazz trances, Leeds quintet Shatner’s Bassoon sound like little else. Since their formation in 2010, the experimental outfit’s intense maelstrom of beguiling yet disturbing noise has earned the group a reputation as a must-see live act.

Each member has a wide and disparate influence and approach to making music which all filters into the bands overall sound of evasive song structures, angular rhythms and anxiety inducing psychedelia.

Shatner’s Bassoon’s aberrant amalgamation of styles, create an unforgettable spectacle, which has previously taken them to festivals such as North Atlantic Flux Festival, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Manchester Jazz Festival, Lancaster Jazz Festival and Beacons Festival. Similarly, the band have toured extensively around the UK, previously playing alongside the likes of Melt Yourself Down, Matthew Bourne, Roller Trio, and more, whilst captivating audiences as if by hypnosis at every outing.

Shatner’s Bassoon is:

Johnny Richards – Keyboard
Michael Bardon – Bass
Craig Scott – Guitar
Oliver Dover – Alto, Baritone Sax and Clarinet
Joost Hendrickx – Drums and Cowbell

Interesting fact

The TV series Brass Eye (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brass_Eye) used the term Shatner’s Bassoon in a 1997 programme. In this episode the programme makers asked drug dealers for several types of fictitious drugs. One drug mentioned was called Cake, described as being from Czechoslovakia, despite the country no longer existing when the episode was screened. The drug purportedly affected an area of the brain called “Shatner’s Bassoon” (altering the user’s perception of time).

With earlier opening hours than before to accommodate more time for families, this year’s offerings include an expanded ‘Into the Trees’ area featuring, by day, a pop-up cinema, woodland workshops, circus skills, inclusive art collectives and, by night for older crowds, a tongue in cheek retro disco and more party DJs, ensuring that people of all ages have plenty of things to get up to across all days and nights of the festival.

The Intro The Trees area debuted at Tramlines in 2017 but returns for the 10th year in a larger setting courtesy of the site move to Hillsborough Park with a real focus on kids and family entertainment. Nestled in a section of the park surrounded by a ring of impressive trees, the area will come alive with twinkling lights and visually exciting decor. It’s here, by day, that families can find tailored programming to entertain the kids, and by night, the colourful party DJs come out to play for the festival’s later stayers, making Into The Trees an essential place to explore.

Friday will see the Sheffield-based Village Screen Presents bring a pop-up cinema to the festival screening family favourites and cult classics. By night, festival goers can look forward to Club Tropicana, which brings 80s pop, disco and timeless anthems all night long. With coloured Hawaiian shirts, free flower garlands, surprise confetti canons, flamingos, rubber ducks and much more, the dance floor will be a lively affair.

The pop-up cinema returns during the day on both Saturday and Sunday with a kids’ disco between films, but also comes the Responsible Fishing team who will invite kids into to their woodland workshop. Inspired by the natural landscape and using foraged materials of whatever they can find nearby, little hands can create beautiful transient artworks unique to Tramlines. This promises to be a relaxing space for visitors to reconnect with nature – with the added activity of gravity defying stone balancing!

Over both Saturday and Sunday at Tramlines, guests can runaway to the circus tent with Jamboree Arts to learn wobbly circus skills, from walking the tight wire to juggling and acrobatics, with circus artists and tutors on hand to turn novices into accomplished circus performers.

The Cool Beans Roadshow Mega DJ Party gear things up a notch at Into The Trees on Saturday night with an energetic, interactive and amusing hour of power from the hosting duo who are guaranteed to leave smiles on faces – think Vic & Bob with decks and a mixer! On Sunday night, the arts collective Fruit N Juice take charge with a focus on empowering and celebrating everything feminine and queer. Expect sounds from R&B to Kylie and everything in between.

Weekend tickets cost £79 plus booking fee and under 12s go for free. Tickets are available now from www.tramlines.org.uk.

Keep an eye out for further lineup announcements by following Tramlines on social ‘@tramlines’.
