SINGLE REVIEW: FloodHounds – ‘Psychosemantics’

0

Oh my word this is so good, so fucking good. FloodHounds have made a track that is huge, really huge.

This is built around some dramatic guitar; it’s all sinister spy movie soundtrack. This is heavy, people, this is guitar that batters its way through your skull. Backing this up is some heavy pounding drums and a bass that just won’t quit. The cherry on the icing is some frankly thrilling synth and hits of electronic drums effects. This is the band’s trademark stomp turned up to 11.

There is – as if I need to tell you – a darkness in this track.“The theme is dealing with the external chaos that you can sometimes find yourself thrown into without warning,” says songwriter Jack Flynn. “The line ’Get me out of this, Why’d you get me into this,’ sparked it off, that’s the genesis of the song. Sometimes these situations are your own doing, sometimes they are somebody else’s, and even though you can see it coming, the allure of the chaos can get you hooked in before you realise you’re bang in the middle of it. An uplifting chorus opens up the song, reminding you about how a bit of space to breathe is often all you need”. It’s that uplifting chorus that provides the solution to the darkness.

For me, this is the track that brings together all of the sounds the band have played with in the time I’ve known their music. There are the sounds of heavy stomping blues Indie Rock, the bite of Alt-rock, those hits of Psychedelia; it’s all here. It sounds like a new start for the band, a new direction, a new way of mixing up their musical ingredients.

Before I gush to the end of this review there’s something I need to tell you. The tracks sounds great on headphones and PC speakers but hearing it on a decent sound system is going to open up a whole other level to it. “We added sub-bass drops, so when the riff hits, it hits hard. You won’t hear it on a phone, but put it on a big sound system and you’re going to feel it rattling in your bones.” says Lauren. And Anna adds “We had great fun in the studio, screaming the word “psycho!” and burying it deep into the mix, so you can’t figure out why it feels so uneasy but it’s all lurking in there”.

‘Psychosemantics’ is a song with so many levels, so it opens up in sound, in meaning, the more you listen to it. Fucking hell this is so-so good. Go get yourself some of this right now.

SINGLE REVIEW: daisy graves – ‘grapejuice’

0

I am not a huge fan of pop-punk, most of the Green Day era bands and the new crop just don’t grab me. However, I am of course always happy to give a release a listen, and in the case of Leeds’ band daisy graves’ ‘grapejuice’ boy am I really happy I did.

This is one of those ‘instant like’ songs; seconds in and I had the biggest grin on my face. It comes with a great earwormy tune, a great pop element and, of course, those crashing guitars. It’s that great pop element that has me hooked; clever touches of synth, the odd vocal effect. And to top this off there’s the great vocals. Musically this is the full package.

But wait, there’s something else. This is the sweetest love song; bet you weren’t expecting that. It’s just lovely. Now I’m not sure the band are going to be all that happy with me describing it as sweet and lovely but it is. And it’s honest and true to real life.

I’m well and truly hooked. Fantastic tune, great playing, fabulously put together. Words we can all relate to, sung brilliantly. And you can throw yourself around the room, just try not to. Go on, make yourself happy, crank your sound system up loud, and hit play.

SINGLE REVIEW: Surgiõ – ‘Shame’

0

I am – if you’ve been keeping up – somewhat picky about the Indie mixed with Alt-rock bands I like; they have to have something that makes them stand out from the crowd. And this release from Bradford’s Surgiõ has that.

Sure there’s that loping rhythm of old style Indie, there’s that steady guitar but, and it’s a BIG BUT, it’s the slightly warped surfy guitar that runs through the track that’s going to grab you. And then there’s the tune; this is a tune that drills its way into your head and takes up residence. If you’re looking for a FFO, it reminds me in some ways of The Las, the way they had with a tune. That is until the revved up end; fast and building guitar.

So the question is, is this really Indie mixed with Alt-rock. The answer is, yes in some ways and, predictably for me, no. It would be if it wasn’t for that warped guitar. This makes some bizarre fantastic mix of The Jesus and Mary Chain, old-school Indie and something that I can’t quite put my finger on. And it’s this that makes it so compelling.

Look, this release has been out for a while, and I bitterly regret not getting round to it before now. This is made even worse by the fact that the band are trailing an upcoming new release right now.

This is a thrill. It’s got me waiting for the next release but until that comes this is more than enough. This is bloody fantastic, go get your ears treated.

GIG NEWS: The Searchers – The longest running band in pop history is back for one final tour; including Victoria Theatre Halifax Saturday 20 May.

0

When John McNally formed The Searchers in 1957, aged just 16, he could never have imagined the phenomenal success that his band would enjoy: 50 million record sales, thirteen UK chart hits – including three No.1’s – and a sound that inspired some of the greatest artists of all time, including The Byrds, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen.

This is a chance to experience a truly legendary band, possibly for the last time. Original members John McNally (guitar, vocals) and Frank Allen (bass, vocals) are joined by Spencer James (guitar, vocals – Spencer has been part of the line-up for 37 years) and the newly recruited, highly rated Richie Burns (drums). The Searchers will be at the Victoria Theatre Halifax with their Thank You Tour on Saturday 20 May.

Frank said “It’s been four years since our last tour. We all needed a break but now we are ready to come back and do what we do and love best. Mind you, I do sometimes shudder at what we’ve taken on – 43 dates in 3 months – that’s quite a schedule for a band of a certain age! But I’m really up for it as are the rest of the guys.”

John said “I set this band up in 1957 and so far things have worked to plan. I thought we would probably do a 43-date UK tour 66 years later. I’m joking of course! Who would have imagined that we are still able to do this – touring the best towns and cities in the UK and still playing to thousands of fantastic fans. I can’t wait.”

The band has chosen to call this the ‘Thank You Tour’ as a mark of respect and appreciation for the legions of fans who have supported them over the years. Fans will be treated to a full set of The Searchers’ best-loved songs, including ‘When You Walk In The Room’, ‘Goodbye My Love’, ’Sugar & Spice’, ‘What Have They Done To The Rain’ as well as their three UK No.1 hits ‘Sweets for my Sweet’ (1963), ‘Needles and Pins’ (1964) and ‘Don’t Throw Your Love Away’ (1964). Also included will be material from the 70s and 80s, when the Searchers were signed to Sire Records, becoming label-mates with some of the hippest acts around including Talking Heads, The Cure, Madonna and The Ramones – who covered ‘Needles and Pins’. This was one of the band’s favourite creative periods and saw them recording at Rockfield Studios in Wales (famous for Queen’s recording of Bohemian Rhapsody). Keep an ear out for gems including ‘Hearts in Her Eyes’, ‘Love’s Melody’, ‘Infatuation’ and ‘It’s Too Late’.

The Searchers are the longest running band in pop history. They have been in constant demand for 66 years. Not even The Rolling Stones can match that: they’ve only been going for 61 years!

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: FUDGE. Drop new studio version of ‘Your Fall From Grace’, UK tour April 2023

0

Following their signing to the Marshall Live agency last year, Leeds four-piece FUDGE. have released their new single, a studio version of ‘Your Fall From Grace’ which previously featured on their Town Hall Session live EP.

This new version of Y.F.F.G. again has the magical touch of producer Kane Whitelam. Placed in a studio setting, though, Kane and the band have uncovered a new depth to the song with greater experimentation and a greater attention to detail. The single demonstrates a new edge to the FUDGE. sound and one they are extremely proud of. It unveils a new era that sets the tone for further development and exploration, and this is an electrifying start.

Described by the band as a rebellious love song, Y.F.F.G. is as close to that as their style will possibly allow. It’s more authentic, more palpable, and one free from the idealised romanticisms and cliches we are invariably used to.

Y.F.F.G. unearths the less glamorous yet more common aspects of relationships and highlights the angst of anticipating the future when perhaps we should really be enjoying the present. The accompanying video, which will be available soon, perpetuates this narrative, providing a deeper connection to the underlying message that love is the answer.

By their standards, FUDGE. are perhaps at times more restrained here, which allows the narrative to come through, although it’s certainly not something you can sit back and relax to. Come the chorus, however, the band provide us with another song that implores the listener to react to and, importantly, engage with because the chances are it’s something that we can all relate to.

Commenting about Y.F.F.G. singer Cam says: “It’s different to our usual songs but it’s a fan favourite and shows a very atmospheric, abstract vibe and I see it as a rebellious love song. The feeling I get from this song is the same as the almost surreal sensation you get when you’re on your own late at night or early morning. That may sound strange but some of you might get what I mean.”

Guitarist Otto expands: “I call this our quiet song. I wrote it whilst someone was sleeping in the same room as me, so I picked something sweet sounding and played it with compassion. Luckily, the outcome was one of our most palatable songs for the listener and, honestly, one that I never meant to write but am grateful that I did.”

Drummer Angus adds: “You get to hear Cam’s sensitive side on this song, which is usually hidden behind his radginess. It’s a lot smoother in its ebbs and flows and playing drums to this is actually quite a relaxing experience because, for once, I can sit back and let the song do the work. For that reason, it’s bigger than its constituent parts. A bit of a banger in other words.”

The single is the first to be taken from the band’s forthcoming THAT’S JUST IT, THIS IS NOW EP, which will be released during their forthcoming headline April tour.

After a short hiatus from the live circuit, the band are back and they’re hungry. Anyone who has ever witnessed a FUDGE. gig can expect the same intensity but with a little minty freshness to cleanse the palate. For those who haven’t seen them live before, the band recommend a spare pair of trousers. Some baby wipes probably wouldn’t go amiss either.

SINGLE REVIEW: Del Scott Miller – ‘Some Days Are Alright’

0

My father would have described ‘Some Days Are Alright’ as a ‘rollocking little number’ – he was rather fond of a great phrase. For those of you not entirely familiar with the word it means boisterously carefree, joyful, or high-spirited.

As you may have worked out, the song is an up-tempo dance yourself silly kind of track full of fiddle, accordion and mandolin played in a joyful rush. It is a musical celebration of at least some of the time being good.

I know some of you are asking ‘Frank, what does it sound like?’. Well, it’s kind of folk based, kind of poppy. It has something of both the Housemartins and ‘Come On Eileen’ period Dexys. I say this in terms of feeling not sound. I’m entirely OK with you if you were to call it ‘a folk based uptempo track’.

The danger so far is that you may be thinking it’s rather lightweight musically. It’s not. One, there are great words (as you’d expect from Del). And two, there’s nothing lightweight about the quality of the playing. Del has assembled a group of absolutely fantastic musicians for this track who are playing out of their skin. It’s a riot of wonderful playing.

Simply put, this is fantastic. ‘Nuff said.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Mickelson drops new single:’Only Grey Matter Boiling In My Head’. February UK tour

0

Kicking-off the new year with a choice collaboration, the new single sees the San Francisco songwriter teaming-up with XTC legend Colin Moulding, who provides the track with its wandering bassline and production nous.

Hallmarked with the humour, wit and ambition you might expect from a meeting of Mickelson and Moulding’s minds, ‘Only Grey Matter Boiling In My Head’ offers a comical take on those moments of completely losing your cool. As Mickelson explains ““Only Grey Matter Boiling In My Head” is a humorous song dealing with anger management issues. This theme of self depreciation shows up in my lyrics from time to time. I am also extremely honoured that Colin Moulding played bass. We had several chats about the song and he also offered some great production ideas.”

Introduced to Colin by his son Lee (who performs in Mickelson’s live band), the chance encounter seemed to chime serendipitously with a new song Mickelson had been writing that bore the arch lyrical quips and off-kilter arrangements not so dissimilar to XTC’s vintage output. Reaching out to Colin with the bare bones of the track, he consequently added his own distinctive stylistics. Speaking about how the collaboration came to be Mickelson adds “I’d just written the song and thought it would be a good fit as there are some unusual twists and turns in the song and to my mind, reminded me of XTC. We recorded the basic tracks and Lee sent it to Colin. I quickly received his bass track and was pretty blown away by it.”

Gifting the track with its notably tilting basslines, the additional grandiose piano lines and accomplished drum rolls are courtesy of Mickelson’s UK-based live band, Jon Buckett and Lee Moulding respectively. Standing as the first piece of recorded music they have laid-down with their frontman, the drums and piano were recorded at Earthworm Recording Studio in Swindon, whilst Mickelson performed, produced, arranged, and mixed the rest from his Bay Area studio.

SINGLE & GIG NEWS: Spielmann drops ‘The Right Track’, upcoming festival dates

0

‘Spielmann’, the new project from Leeds mainstay Ben Lewis, has shared second single ‘The Right Track’. The songwriter & producers first musical offering of 2023, Spielmann has crafted a timeless pop song.

Despite only unveiling Spielmann in December and with only a handful of shows under his belt (His third found him opening for Yard Act at a sold-out Leeds O2 Academy – ‘Pure nepotism’ according to him, having spent time in various projects with 3 quarters of the band), Lewis has been around the block; as a songwriter, producer, band member, DJ and promoter over the years. After a decade or so playing with acts like Ruthie, Menace Beach and Bruising, it’s time for Spielmann to take centre stage on his own.

This first brace of singles show his lofty aspirations – Like Jack Antonoff producing The War On Drugs, or Phoenix if they’d grown up on heartland Americana, Spielmann’s take on modern pop and how it aligns with alternative music, is studied, honed and purposeful. Expansive yet intimate, with a tongue firmly planted in its cheek and toting stadium-ready choruses that will stick in your head for days, telling stories that are arguably autobiographical, as he explains; “Some of it’s me, I’m in it somewhere…But I’m really not that interesting”.

“It’s pop music, but for people who don’t want to admit they like pop music… for people who listen to “proper” music but really just want to sing along to a big chorus”

Stream/Download: https://kycker.ffm.to/therighttrack

One single and a handful of much discussed hometown shows in, Spielmann has already found himself booked for a busy summer with performances at Green Man, Long Division and more planned.

Live Dates:

FEB 11 – Westgarth Social Club, Middlesbrough w/ Phil Madeley
APR 1 – FairPlay Fest, Manchester
MAY 6 – Are You Listening?, Reading
MAY 14 – In Colour, Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
MAY 20 – Get Together, Sheffield
JUN 10 – Long Division, Wakefield
AUG 17 – 20 – Green Man, Brecon Beacons

EP & TOUR NEWS: Bedsit ‘Dead Bands’ EP out 3 February, UK Tour February & March 2023

0

Hull four-piece BEDSIT have revealed the video for the title track of their debut DEAD BANDS EP which will be released on 3rd February via their own independent label Forever Underdogs. The four track EP was self-produced in their own Unit 45 studio, mixed by Hull legend Nick Russell and mastered by Pete Maher (Pixies, Nick Cave, Garbage, Jack White, Nine Inch Nails, Glasvegas, The 1975).

The video refers to the lineage of live music and how passion and creativity flows through the generations. The band invited people to participate in the video shoot to represent their favourite dead bands and the response was overwhelming with several local legends – The Housemartins, Pink Noise, The Gargoyles and The Von Trapps – among them.

“There wasn’t a more suitable location on earth to film the video than the monolithic New Adelphi Club in Hull,” say the band. “We all have history there, and we’re eternally grateful for the scene it has nurtured since 1984, with special thanks to owner Paul Jackson who has dedicated his life to independent live music.

“We had a bit of trouble filming this project – we lost a lot of footage – and we joked that the release must be cursed, that we’d jinxed ourselves by calling it Dead Bands. But we pulled through and, with several re-shoots, we’re more than happy with the finished product.”

DEAD BANDS EP

Tracks

• Drip Feed
• Go Outside
• Dead Bands
• Eloquent

The EP will be available on CD and via all major streaming and download platforms including Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, Apple Music, TIDAL, Deezer and Soundcloud.

Pre-save the DEAD BANDS EP here: https://push.fm/ps/deadbands

From the opening feedback-drenched power of Drip Feed to the final chaotic absurdities of Eloquent, you may hear Fugazi, Husker Du, Buffalo Tom or the Dead Kennedys as reference points, occasionally even Discharge in the coruscating guitar sounds, but all four tracks retain an identity that remain unique and consistent to BEDSIT throughout.

“The EP is about the chaos and uncertainty of modern times,” say the band, “the struggle for meaning and motivation. We all have the sense that something isn’t right. We often get cynical and angry. But, occasionally, we get a glimpse of the magical – a moment of ecstasy – and that relief is worth living for.

“This is our first EP as a full band and the title track is a celebration of the heritage of live music. From gigantic rock stars who inspired generations, to local artists who you think never got the exposure they deserved, they were all answering the same calling – blessed release. How those burning passions, die as they may, continue to smoulder in the hearts of strangers, inspiring joy and creativity.”

TOUR

To coincide with the release, the band will embark on their first full headline tour. Dates as follows:

FEBRUARY

Fri 03 BRIDLINGTON Black Lion
Fri 10 HUDDERSFIELD Northern Quarter
Thu 16 SHEFFIELD Washington
Fri 17 BRADFORD Underground
Sat 18 HULL DIVE HUS
Fri 24 SCARBOROUGH Indigo Alley

MORE ABOUT BEDSIT

BEDSIT formed as a solo project in 2019 by Tom Hockney. Struggling with depression and the loss of a friend, he picked up an acoustic guitar and learned his first chords during late nights sat on the kitchen floor. Scratchy phone recordings eventually lead to fully fledged songs in 2020 when Tom recorded his debut solo EP in the bedsit where he lived.

Lockdown hit shortly after the EP release and Tom began jamming in a variety of projects with Casey Stead (guitar) until, later in 2021, George Garnett (drums) and Tom Scanlon (bass) joined the band and brought BEDSIT to life. Together they created songs grounded by their shared love of grunge and allowed outrage and anguish to swell through their soul and their lyrics.

In 2021 when the scene was suffering and many gigs were cancelled or had to go underground, BEDSIT took a risk and booked a date to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind by playing the album in its entirety. After much practice, they performed to a sold-out audience and stole the show. Buzzing from that success, the band wrote and recorded their debut single, Go Outside. The song is a cry for help – a plea for freedom – to do away with the stress and uncertainty of modern times and to reconnect with one’s primal humanity. Released in April 2022 under the band’s own Forever Underdogs label, Go Outside demonstrated what was possible for the band to produce themselves.

The band’s hometown shows have since grown in both strength and numbers. With three members of BEDSIT working at the New Adelphi Club in Hull – one of Britain’s oldest independent music venues and winner of the MVT (Music Venue Trust) Grassroots Venue: Spirit Of The Scene award in 2022 – the band immersed themselves further into the live music scene. Tom Scanlon left the band and bassist Ciaran Hall joined and they then set their sights on recording and releasing the DEAD BANDS EP. That time is fast approaching with the video release taking us one step nearer.

And that’s as far as things have gone. So far …
