VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: Sophia Marshall releases video for ‘Hey Al, Woah!’, upcoming dates

0

Sophia Marshall has released a video for her latest single ‘Hey Al, Woah!’

Speaking on the track Sophia has said, “I was relieved to write a song where the focus was not on me, as songwriters are so self-indulged at times – which I admit to being guilty of. But I wanted to speak out, for possibly more than just myself.” The track focuses on Marshall’s experience with a man that made her realise she couldn’t tolerate his attitude anymore.

The track is the second single taken from her debut solo album ‘BYE BYE’ which will be released in October 2017.

The info

Sophia burst onto the UK Americana scene as one-half of highly acclaimed band The HaveNots, having played hundreds of gigs across three continents from the tiniest dives to the grandest theatres, she’s also delighted audiences at prestigious festivals like Summer Sundae in the UK and South by South West (SXSW) in the USA with her spellbinding voice and songs. Highlights include performing Emmylou’s parts at a Gram Parson’s tribute alongside Evan Dando, (and earning the praise of Gram’s daughter Polly) and touring the land sharing stages with the Be Good Tanya’s, The Sadies and Tift Merrit. More recently, Sophia joined Frazey Ford on her UK tour, as both the opening act and providing backing vocals for Frazey.

EP & TOUR NEWS: Cursed Earth release ‘Cycles of Grief Volume II: Decay’, dates October 2017

0

‘Cycles Of Grief Volume II’ is a continuation of where it began on ‘Cycles of Grief Volume I’. A two part concept, the Cycles of Grief collection is an unflinching and graphic depiction of trauma that breaches the boundaries of generation, country, class or circumstance. The EPs cover themes of isolation and brutality from the point of view of characters caught up in and torn apart by their environment and the actions of those responsible for shaping their lives.

“The story in Cycles of Grief documents the collision of nature and nurture” says guitarist Kieran Molloy. “It’s an unprejudiced look into the intergenerational nature of coldness, addiction and violence.”

Cursed Earth, comprising vocalist Jazmine Luders, guitarists Kieran Molloy and Paul Cottrell, bassist Robert Owens and drummer Sam Forward, formed in Perth in 2013. Through EP Vae Mortis and a split with Burning Season (collected on Enslaved By The Insignificant, released worldwide by Death’s Grip / Holy Roar) they established themselves as unflinching documenters of the darkest corners of human nature.

Their first EP on their new label UNFD was lauded in the pages of Kerrang! Magazine, who featured Jazmine on their cover and awarded Cycles of Grief Volume I a flawless 5 K! score. In late October, Cursed Earth will head to the UK to play a run of dates with Make Them Suffer. Dates for the run are:

23rd Oct – London @ Boston Music Rooms
24th Oct – Manchester @ Rebellion
26th Oct – Glasgow @ The Garage Attic
27th Oct – Leeds @ Key Club
28th Oct – Brighton @ Sticky Mike’s

LIVE REVIEW: Antony and Friends, Central Methodist Church Todmorden, 23rd September

0

The concert opened with Antony Brannick playing Beethoven’s piano sonata no 18 (in E flat, op 31 no 3). This was a piece of varying moods, well conveyed, from formal to playful and from placid to forceful. It ended with a rousing and expansive presto.

Then we had the guests for the evening, the Elmet Quintet, consisting of Rachael Gibbon on clarinet, with Richard Webster and Alison Mordey on violins, Robin Pennie on viola, and Caroline Steer on cello. This group combined beautifully, both as a quintet and in a piece in the second half, the formal and melodious first movement of Hoffmeister’s duo (in C major, op 6 no 1) featuring Richard Webster and Caroline Steer.

Their first piece was Stanford’s atmospheric Fantasy no 1. The strings set up a rhythmic march, and the clarinet introduced a melody, which the strings then echoed: the pace varied throughout, with the clarinet leading.

The concert concluded with Weber’s clarinet quintet (B flat major, Op 34). This had varying pace and moods, concluding with a technically brilliant and vital rondo.

Look out for the next concert on 14th October.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Shed Seven release ‘Room In My House’, tour Winter 2017

0

York’s finest Shed Seven are set to make one of indie-rock’s most triumphant returns this winter, having recently signed to BMG they release their first new album in 16 years and then embark on a tour that’s seen them shift more tickets than ever before.

Shed Seven were one of the leading lights of Britpop with two gold albums and 15 Top 40 singles under their belt. The band’s new album ‘Instant Pleasures’, which is released on 10 November and produced by legendary producer Youth from Killing Joke , who’s previously worked with other esteemed musicians such as Kate Bush, U2, Depeche Mode and The Charlatans, is their first new music in 16 years and seen enough pre-orders to have made the album a Top 10 chart album if it had been released any week so far this year.

‘Instant Pleasures’ is the most fitting title for this, their fifth album and their first since 2001’s ‘Truth Be Told’. Frontman Rick Witter remarks that it works in two ways. Not only is it a comment on our tech-obsessed, social media crazy, instantaneous world, it’s also a literal tongue-in-cheek reference to the tracks themselves. “Whatever you want these days you just click a button and you’re instantly pleasured,” says Witter. “It’s certainly the way the world seems to turn at the minute. But it’s also a nice little nod because if you were to play our album you’d be instantly pleasured. There are twelve pretty damn cool songs on there.”

https://ShedSeven.lnk.to/IPPR

The first single to be taken from the album is ‘Room In My House’. It’s a thunderous indie-rock anthem with Rick Witter’s distinctive vocals driving a track that wouldn’t sound out of place on their classic 1996 album ‘A Maximum High’.

Room in My House – Edit

In November and December, the band will undertake the biggest tour of their career, aptly-titled #Shedcember. They’ve sold over 50,000 tickets across the country with more shows being added to an ever-extending tour schedule and that’s before any fans have heard a note of music. The band will headline London’s 02 Brixton Academy on 16 December, with a career-defining live show set to be announced later this year.

‘Instant Pleasures’ will be available digitally, heavy weight vinyl, limited red vinyl, cassette, CD and a limited deluxe 2 CD featuring new tracks, demos and remixes.
Shed Seven will also be releasing a 7” Box Set which will contain seven coloured 7”s and one polaroid which will be unique to each box. Limited to 777 boxes, available exclusively via their artist store. PRE-ORDER ALBUM:

SINGLE REVIEW: Regan – ‘Broken Promises’

0

Having reviewed Regan’s last single – ‘Four Fingers’ (read the review) I had some idea of what to expect from ‘Broken Promises’. I expected great guitar, I got it in spades. I expected great vocals, got them. I expected a great arrangement, got that.

Musically what we have is is something that sounds as though it was written on an acoustic, it has that feeling. I can hear this played acoustically in my head. This gives it swagger and energy. Regan have then taken this this and made it roar, without losing the tune. Yep there’s tune. It’s reminding me, in all the right ways, of the rock music I used to listen to. The band has taken those ‘classic rock’ sounds and made them their own.

For me the thing that stands out, and grabs me every time I listen to the track, is the simply stunning lead guitar. It starts around halfway through the track behind the vocals and then it just carries on. It soars, it has quite wonderful controlled power.

I’ve tried hard to come up with something else, a different way of summing up this track but I can’t so I’m just going to have to say it. This is fabulous.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: French For Rabbits ‘drop ‘It Will Be Okay’ 22nd September, dates October 2017

0

New Zealand’s dream pop five – piece, French For Rabbits are set to release a new single on the 22nd of September to coincide with a UK Tour in October 2017.

‘It Will Be Okay’, the follow up to the recent ‘One And Only’ single, was recorded and self produced in Wellington and Christchurch and will be available to download at all the usual major outlets.

Taking inspiration from the likes of Beach House and Hundred Waters, the new single is a beautifully crafted break-up song that’s heart breaking yet strangely uplifting. Without doubt their most expansive and cinematic sound to date, the new single is a hint of what to expect from the band’s forthcoming second album.

French For Rabbits have also announced that they will play six UK shows in October, their first British dates since the release of their debut album ‘Spirits’ in 2014. They start the tour at The Mash House in Edinburgh on the 9th of October and wind up at the Old Blue Last in London on Monday the 16th of October. Following the UK dates they will head off Europe to play further shows in Berlin, Copenhagen and Amsterdam.

Originally formed in Waikuku Beach in 2011 by Brooke Singer (piano, guitar, vocals) and John Fitzgerald (guitar), the duo have since moved to Wellington and are now a quintet following the addition of Ben Lemi (guitar, vocals, bass), Hikurangi Schaverien-Kaa (drums) and Penelope Esplin (vocals, bass, keys, percussion). Since the release of their debut ‘Claimed by the Sea’ EP in 2012, their music has featured in The Vampire Diaries and Being Human and has picked up over 10 million listens online. The aforementioned ‘Spirits’ record on Portland label Lefse Records was acclaimed by critics and public alike in their homeland and universally by the likes of Stereogum and BBC 6Music’s Gideon Coe and Tom Ravenscroft.

Currently on tour in New Zealand, French For Rabbits are set to announce more release details of the new album in the very near future.

TOUR NEWS: Theatre Of Hate October 2017 tour

0

The band have announced a run of UK shows this Autumn. In 1980, Kirk Brandon formed Theatre Of Hate from the ashes of heralded punk band The Pack. Joining Kirk on vocals were notable punk musicians Stan Stammers and Luke Rendall, along with old school friend, Steve Guthrie and Canadian born John “Boy” Lennard, who revolutionised the band’s sound with his haunting sax lines.

Theatre Of Hate’s debut double-A-side single, “Legion”/”Original Sin”, topped the independent chart in 1980, and “Westworld”, their debut album, produced by Mick Jones from The Clash and released in 1982, held the number one position for 21 weeks. The single taken from the album, “Do You Believe In The Westworld?” has become an anthem and is still widely played in clubs and on international radio, as well as featuring on numerous compilation albums.

Supporting the likes of The Clash & Ian Dury lead to Theatre Of Hate headlining major venues across the UK & Northern Europe.

Theatre Of Hate imploded in 1982, with Kirk taking Stan forward to form Spear Of Destiny, but the band has resurfaced over the years to play some very special shows.
Having been asked by John Curd to join The Damned for a massive show at London’s infamous Roundhouse in December 2014 the band once again joined the fray. A short set of dates around the London anchor show attracted rave reviews, as did a 6 night night SOLD OUT run in December 2014. (see reviews below)

2015 saw the band play two short jaunts across the UK in April and December both sets of dates wowed large crowds.

During touring in 2014 and 2015 the band constantly recorded at Oxygen Studios in Manchester, the first new studio album in 30+ years is now complete and released via a private pledge! ‘Kinshi’ was released on October 14th 2016 on CD, Vinyl, Download & Dub to pledgers. The 12 brand new songs are simply stunning. 2017 is looking like a very busy year with the album getting labels releases in Europe & the USA. Shows in the UK, Europe and the USA are already on sale.

Kirk, Stan and John will be joined by current Spear Of Destiny band member Adrian Portas (New Model Army) on guitar and Chris Bell(Hugh Cornwall) on drums to pay homage to the iconic TOH sound.

CONCERT NEWS: Music in the Round’s amazing artists return for more pitch perfect performances in Barnsley this Autumn

0

Ensemble 360

In this special event, Ensemble 360 present an evening of beautiful music by one of classical music’s finest writer of melodies. Though written in the last year of Schubert’s life, the Piano Trio in B flat is remarkably bright and carefree. For contrast, the dark slow movement of ‘Death and Maiden’ in the second half of the performance is worthy of a chilling ghost story!

Ensemble 360 will be at Emmanuel Church on Sunday 15 October 2017 at 3pm performing the SCHUBERT Piano Trio in B flat D.898 and String Quartet in D minor D.810 ‘Death and the Maiden’

Ensemble 360 has gained an enviable reputation across the UK for the quality and integrity of their performances. Formed in 2005, eleven musicians of international standing came together to take up residency in South Yorkshire with Music in the Round, establishing a versatile group comprising five string players, five wind players and a pianist. Their home performance space is Sheffield’s Crucible Studio Theatre, an intimate space in which the audience is seated “in the round” and never more than twenty feet away from the stage. It is from this wonderful performance space that both Ensemble 360 and Music in the Round take their names.

Ensemble 360’s enthusiasm, drive and musicality draw audiences into their performances both through the quality of their playing and their engaging spoken introductions. Due to the flexible nature of the group’s line-up the repertoire possibilities are enormous; anything from baroque duos, through classical quartets to new commissions for all eleven players.

Marmen Quartet

Marmen Quartet will be at Emmanuel Church on Friday 17 November at 7.30pm performing GLASS String Quartet No. 3 Mishima, HAYDN String Quartet in C Op.74 No.1 and BEETHOVEN String Quartet in E Flat Op. 74 Harp.

Founded in 2012 at the Royal College of Music in London, the Marmen Quartet consists of four highly skilled players who have played across the globe. They recently organized a chamber music series in Sweden, receiving critical acclaim for their recital of Mozart’s quartet in G major k.387 alongside transcriptions of Monteverdi madrigals together with flutist Taylor Maclennan. Their recent debut recital in Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre offered an eclectic and exciting combination of Haydn, renaissance composer Josquin Desprez, and Bela Bartok.

This performance will include Philip Glass’ minimalist 3rd string quartet which was originally written for the soundtrack to Paul Schrader’s film ‘Mishima’ in which the atmospheric movements correspond to different periods in the life of Japanese writer Yukio Mishima.

The performance concludes with Beethoven’s Op.74 quartet which reveals the composer in his most serene and relaxed mood. It is undoubtedly a masterpiece.

Tickets for both performances are £13 / £6 Under 18s and Students; available from The Civic Box Office on 01226 327000 or online at barnsleycivic.co.uk
