ALBUM, VIDEO & TOUR NEWS: Pulled Apart By Horses announce new album ‘The Haze’, stream title track, tour March/April

0

Leeds’s Pulled Apart By Horses have announced their new album, The Haze, for release on March 17th 2017 via Caroline International. Having recently shared their first new music since 2014’s Blood LP in ‘The Big What If’, dubbed “an instant mosh-pit maker” by the NME, Pulled Apart By Horses today reveal the new album’s opening and title track.

“We had to have ‘The Haze’ as the album opener – it gets down to business pretty quick!” vocalist and guitarist Tom Hudson reveals. “One of my favourite sections on the album is the Kraut-rock-vibe middle eight in this track. We wrote and demoed it in our ‘middle of no-where’ Welsh writing session, the weird atmospheric sounds at the start of it were recorded outside the lodge we were in. There were these giant whirring fans and birds tweeting everywhere. The bell that opens the album was this little brass doorbell that was hanging up in the porch too.”

“With the third album [2014’s Blood], we were making a conscious effort to think about everything and really analyse what makes good songs work,” explains bassists Robert Lee. “This time around we wanted to get back to the spontaneity of the first record, to just hang out and have fun and see what happened, so we wanted to take ourselves away from our usual practise room, find a new space, both literally and metaphorically, and just immerse ourselves in music for fun once again.”

“Basically,” says vocalist/guitarist Tom Hudson, “we wanted to go with our guts and fuck everyone else.”

To facilitate this, at the beginning of 2016 the members of Pulled Apart By Horses, Tom Hudson, guitarist James Brown, Robert Lee and new drummer Tommy Davidson, an old friend recruited from Leeds noise rockers These Monsters, decamped from their lock-up rehearsal facility in their native Leeds to a tiny, remote cottage on a dairy farm in the Welsh countryside for 10 days.

“When we first got to the cottage we thought ‘There’s nothing to do here!’” says James. “But that was precisely the point. There was no internet, no emails, no-one checking how we were getting on. We were writing for no-one but ourselves. We became like a little family – cooking for one another, building fires, holding late-night karaoke competitions – and completely immersed ourselves in the music.”

“One of the biggest influences in writing this new album was the new line up”, Rob reveals. “We’ve known Tommy for many years, and he’s created a whole new level of creative spirit within the band.” “Tommy has a different style of drumming – he’s a bit more hard-hitting, like a Dave Grohl / John Bonham type – and so that changed the dynamics,” adds Tom. “He probably felt like he had something to prove, and in terms of creativity and pushing ourselves, his presence really made everyone step up.”

Recorded by Ross Orton (Arctic Monkeys/MIA/Drenge) at his McCall Sound Studio in Sheffield, The Haze is twelve tracks of whip-smart, unpredictable, fierce and sussed hardcore noise-pop. “When we were making our previous album Blood we were referencing a lot of Ross’s work, so it made sense to go straight to the source, and it was great to see him investing so much in the process” Rob reveals. “Ross essentially became a fifth member of the band for a month,” adds James.

CHARITY NEWS: Youth Music Give A Gig Week 24th-31st March, 2017

0

‘Without Youth Music we wouldn’t have got to where we are today, honestly! We’re supporting Give a Gig ‘cause we want others to have the same opportunities for making music that we did’ Rizzle Kicks

Give a Gig Week will be a nationwide music-making extravaganza, with the charity aiming to have 100 gigs happening in this one week.

Gigs can take place anywhere, from your own living room, local pub to legendary music venues or more unusual spaces. One band, The Monotones, plan to stream gigs live from all Three Peaks in the Yorkshire Pennines!

Getting involved is easy – Youth Music offers a useful support pack with advice on planning and promoting gigs, as well as an online poster generator for creating publicity materials.

Sign up at www.giveagig.org.uk

“We’re really excited about Give a Gig Week,” says Matt Griffiths, CEO of Youth Music. “The money raised from the 100 gigs across the country will ensure that young people experiencing challenges in their lives can regularly make music. Musicians, bands and those making music for fun know first-hand the personal and social benefits of music-making and how it can help overcome really difficult situations. I urge you to get involved and put on a gig so that many more young people have that opportunity too. ”

Pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor spoke up for the initiative: ‘Music is a huge part of my life and I feel so lucky to have been able to make a career out of something that I love so much. Youth Music creates music-making opportunities for thousands who would otherwise miss out. That’s why I’m supporting Give a Gig – so others can experience the joys of music as I’ve done’

Youth Music, founded in 1999, is a national charity investing in music-making projects for children and young people facing challenging circumstances. These challenges include disability, poverty, mental health issues, refugee status or being brought up in care. Each year more than 350 Youth Music projects are happening across England. That’s around 75,000 children and young people regularly making music.

The projects support practical, creative music-making of every possible style and technique, with activities including songwriting, music production and performance. Projects include Amies Freedom Choir in London which supports young women who’ve been trafficked into the UK and the Songbirds project which provides music-making for seriously ill children on the wards of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

As well as helping young people develop musically, Youth Music projects also improve their personal and social skills, helping them to face difficult challenges in their lives. Communities divided by prejudice or gangs can be brought together to perform. Writing lyrics can enable a bereaved teenager to express their grief. Making hip-hop beats can help a kid understand maths in a way they never grasped at school.

Before their chart-topping success, Rizzle Kicks performed on the Youth Music stage at the Underage Music Festival in 2009. Laura Mvula honed her songwriting skills with Black Voices, a project supported by Youth Music in Birmingham, while rising grime star Elf Kid has taken part in the No Hats No Hoods project in Lewisham, South East London.

Amies Freedom Choir in London, which supports young women who’ve been trafficked into the UK, is run by Pan Intercultural Arts with financial support from Youth Music.

The Songbirds project, which provides music-making for seriously ill children on the wards of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, is run by LIME Music for Health with financial support from Youth Music

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Amber Run new album out 10th February, February tour

0

Amber Run are back flexing their muscles with brand new song “Fickle Game”. The UK four-piece are also readying to release their sophomore album, ‘For A Moment, I Was Lost’, a 12-track chronicle of their interval between the last, packed with moments of expansive beauty & full-blooded raw emotion. They’re also announcing a February tour to coincide with the album’s launch.

Teasing their album with a new single. “Fickle Game”, the latest release in video form, delves deep as frontman Josh Keogh reflects, “’Fickle Game’ is about self-reflection in the music industry – how being in a band can, if you let it, stop being spontaneous and easy and instead become overly political and eventually exhausting.”

Speaking about the album the band had to say “We have always believed in evolution as a band. Not reinvention so much as taking what’s already there and making it better. As students in Nottingham, we would sit and say “we’ll be the band we want to be by the 4th album”. Somewhere along the way, we forgot that evolution takes time. We forgot that any new experience has a learning curve.

“The new album trims the fat from our previous music, and get down to the bare bones of the songs. We’re songwriters, and where 5AM was a collection of songs written in our youth, these new songs are, for us, a timely response to more recent experiences.”

Also on the album is track “Haze”, which doubles as an instant download for pre-ordering the record early. You can listen to this now via Soundcloud:

GIG NEWS: Islington Mill Salford Fundraiser 10th February 2017

0

Renowned Northern tastemaker site Too Many Blogs brings its new music section – ‘What’s New?’ – to life for the first time as it showcases three of the most exciting upcoming bands from the UK at Salford’s Islington Mill.

If that wasn’t enough, the night will be topped off by an established SECRET HEADLINER that have already sold out Manchester venues three-times the size; followed by a DJ set from one of Manchester’s even bigger favourite bands. TICKETS

On February 10th, Too Many Blogs will be putting on their first ‘What’s New?’ event. Islington Mill is a legendary Greater Manchester venue that is currently fundraising to keep its doors open, so we thought we’d offer our support. You can learn more about why the Mill needs help – here.

First up on the night will be Leeds-based Team Picture who released three outstanding tracks in 2016. This will be the first time that the band have played on this side of the Pennines and all at TMB are delighted that they have chosen to visit Manchester for the first ‘What’s New?’ event. – Here is what they do.

Also from Yorkshire, Leeds three-piece Caro. Too Many Blogs have been vocal about the band over the last twelve months and are delighted to be able to showcase their brilliance. Described by DIY as having “enough going on here to set pulses racing at dangerous levels” they are a band who really come to life in a live setting. Catch them now and then brag to your mates that you saw them before everyone else. Check out the live session video for Smorgasbord.

Travelling from Brighton and completing the lineup for the first ‘What’s New?’ event will be Our Girl. People may recognise the band’s front-woman, Soph Nathan, thanks to her work as ace guitarist with The Big Moon, but don’t let that fool you into thinking you know what they’re about. Our Girl are, as NME put it, “A thundering yet intimate delight”. They released their debut EP, Normally, in November of last year with ‘No Big Deal’ being our pick of a very strong bunch.

To finish the night of live music off, the event has secured some very special guests as a SURPRISE HEADLINER. Born and bred in the Manchester scene (and why they were keen to help support the Mill), this will be a chance to catch the act in a venue that is significantly smaller in comparison to the room that they last played in the City.

To bring our fundraiser to a close, we have Everything Everything’s Jeremy Pritchard on the decks to spin some of his favourite top tunes and get the party started. Expect to see: dancing, singing, smiling and probably some tipsy TMB writers.

About the event, founder of Too Many Blogs, James Hughes, said, “Islington Mill is one of our favourite local venues and because of the situation they find themselves in, it felt like a no-brainer for the debut of our night. With 3 brilliant upcoming acts as the main attraction, we wanted to make the night really special by bringing in a guest headliner to round it all off”.

‘What’s New?’ creator, Elli Brazzill, added, “Promoting and sharing new music is something we care about possibly too much at TMB, so to be showing off some of the best new acts we love at the Mill is a really exciting prospect”.

Tickets are available now for just £7 (applicable to the first 50 sold) and will be £10 once the advance discount tickets are gone.

GIG NEWS: Dust Junkys play Manchester Academy 3 22nd April 2017

0

“It felt like they were pioneers of something we’d not had before.” – Clint Boon (Inspiral Carpets)

“…Dust Junkys probably were the best band in the country at that time” – Graham Massey (808 State)

“Dust Junkys were a great band and absolutely brilliant live.” – Terry Christian

“Loved the Dust Junkys, Manchester got it. But London didn’t…That’s our loss” – Alan Mcgee

“Av It Tunes” – Bez

Following on from their unmissable comeback performance at last year’s Moving Festival, the pioneering cult outfit are back and with unfinished business as they bring their “Not Quite Done & Dusted” tour to Academy 3 on Saturday 22nd April 2017.

Featuring original members including audacious frontman Nicky Lockett (AKA MC Tunes), Guitarist Sam Brox, Bassist Stephen “OJ” Oliver Jones, and drummer Mykey Wilson, plus Manchester DJ Vince Vega, the show will be home to one of the outfit’s first live performances together in nearly two decades.

Following a stint fronting 808 State to two Top 20 hit singles (“The Only Rhyme That Bites” and “Tunes Splits the Atom”), Nicky Lockett founded Dust Junkys in Manchester in 1995 as he sought out accomplished guitar-based backing for his bar-spitting excellence.

Boasting top tunes and an enviable live reputation, Dust Junkys quickly established themselves as a cult favourite in the Northwest. Turning heads with striking TV appearances on the likes of TFI Friday, cover splashes across some of the era’s leading pop culture magazines, and not to mention rampant festival sets at Glastonbury and Reading Festival, and soon enough the rest of the nation had caught up.

Snapped up by the Polydor label in 1998 for the release their critically acclaimed “’Done and Dusted” album, the Junkys’ reeled in a loyal and dedicated fanbase with a string of scintillating singles including “What time is it?”, “Nothing Personal” and “Non Stop Operation”.

During their five years together, Dust Junkys toured extensively, supporting artists such as Fun Lovin’ Criminals and Black Grape on their European tours, whilst packing out innumerable headline shows of their own. Over one twelve month period the hard grafting band played no less than 315 live shows, a statistic that no doubt contributed to them being hailed as one of the best live bands in the UK.

Coupling a tireless attitude to touring and an effortless knack for sonic innovation, the trail blazed by Dust Junkys during their short but inspiring career earned them much respect from their musical peers. With a fan in Fatboy Slim, in 1998 the superstar DJ would in turn provide the band with their biggest hit when sampling their Rinse (Beatbox Wash)” as the backbone for his global smash “Gangster Tripping”.

As such, the reformation of the Dust Junkys for live shows in 2017 has already been warmly welcomed by the likes of Alan McGee (Creation Records), Bez (Happy Mondays), Terry Christian, Graham Massey (808 State) and many more. Capturing the mood aptly, Inspiral Carpets man and Radio X DJ Clint Boon states:

“The Dust Junkys were, quite simply, one of the best live bands I ever saw. It felt like they were pioneers of something we’d not had before. Rappers just weren’t fronting rock bands in 1995. Nicky Lockett was. Great to have them back. Rinse it boys!”.

Dust Junkys will be joined at their Academy 3 show by an aspiring band very much cut from from the same Mancunian cloth: THE BRAKES. Familiar faces to many on the scene already, the quintet have gigged relentlessly around the city over the last few years, pricking ears with their hook-laden indie rock laced, brimming levels of Mancunian swagger and an energising live show.

DUST JUNKYS Plus Special Guests THE BRAKES will play @ Manchester Academy 3 Saturday 22nd April 2017 – Tickets – £12.50 Advance STBF

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Lower Than Atlantis new album out 3rd February, March 2017 tour dates announced

0

The rock four-piece recently debuted their new single ‘Had Enough’ taken from their forthcoming fifth album, due to be released on 3rd February 2017 via Easy Life Records / Red Essential.

‘Had Enough’, was named as Annie Mac’s ‘Hottest Record In The World’ on Radio 1 show.
Speaking about Had Enough, Frontman Mike Duce says: “Had Enough was the first song written for Safe in Sound and felt like it perfectly picked up from where we left off with the self titled but also took things some place new. We feel that it’s one of the best Lower Than Atlantis songs ever so we couldn’t wait to share it with the world! The album feels like a much truer representation of our band than the last record and the success of that album meant we had to challenge ourselves to write bigger and better songs this time around. The song is about exactly what the title suggests! Everyone has one of ‘those’ days and this song is the soundtrack.”

Speaking about making the new album ‘Safe in Sound’ and following up on the career-high of their 2014 self-titled album, Mike Duce reveals: “Everything we achieved with the self titled completely surpassed our expectations and now it’s time to make an album that can really take us to the next level…. We’ve spent a lot more time refining our sound as well as trying some new techniques, Ben has engineered a lot of the record and Eddy has designed the aesthetic so this project is definitely very close to our hearts. We just wanted ‘Safe In Sound’ to be a true representation of where this band is nearly ten years on! This album tackles concepts such as depression, rejection, being in love and monetary worries to name a few so there’s definitely something in there that most people can relate to. We’re certain that this album is the best work from this band and can’t wait for everyone to hear it! The album title is born from the idea of being “safe and sound” but being safe within music.”

The band recently played in Europe with You Me At Six and will start their headline UK tour in March 2017. This will be their biggest tour to date and sees them play London’s iconic Brixton Academy whilst bringing out support from Young Guns, Hands Like Houses and Roam for the ride.

Speaking about the upcoming live dates Duce says: “ We’re headlining the biggest shows we’ve ever played so we’ve written what we think is a record big enough to be played in those venues.”

Lower Than Atlantis will play the following live dates this Spring:

THURSDAY 09 MARCH Norwich UEA
FRIDAY 10 MARCH O2 Academy Birmingham
SATURDAY 11 MARCH Manchester Academy
MONDAY 13 MARCH O2 Academy Leeds
TUESDAY 14 MARCH O2 Academy Newcastle
WEDNESDAY 15 MARCH ABC Glasgow
