GIG & ALBUM NEWS: The Slow Show November tour & new album

0

‘Dream Darling’ is the new album from The Slow Show, out November 25th on Haldern Pop Recordings. The first single from the album is ‘Ordinary Lives’, available to stream & download now on iTunes and Spotify.

There are few bands who are aware of how potent a weapon silence can be in their music. As their name implies, The Slow Show have both a magisterial beauty to their sparse songs and the confidence to let their spellbinding four-minute stories find their mark.

After taking four years to assemble, last years debut album ‘White Water’ was a more aggressive, angry affair, topped off by Goodwin’s mordant baritone vocals. It’s a startling rumble that bears comparison to Leonard Cohen and Mark Lanegan but, on ‘Dream Darling’, Goodwin has honed his vocal range to become a compelling storyteller. He’s a singer who’s now able to narrate the jilted-at-the-altar heartbreak of ‘Last Man Standing’ or ‘Hurts’ tale of a man offering redemption to a sex worker with the necessary levels of wit and pathos, as well as convincingly crooning into the mic.

‘Dream Darling’ was recorded at a farmhouse in the Lake District and produced by Goodwin and Fred Kindt, The Slow Show’s keyboardist. The band would start at 8am and record until 2am, with the night-time studio sessions partly inspired ‘Dream Darling’s title. “It’s an album written in the dark and worked on late at night. It feels quite a dreamy record. The alliteration is deliberate – I think alliteration is an official theme now for The Slow Show, following the band name and ‘White Water’ for the first album title.”

Having experimented with orchestration on ‘White Water’, they were determined to push the classical influences further this time, recording with a choir in Berlin and letting them carry the vocals in places – most notably the soaring wordless finale ‘Brick’, which is the perfect, tear-jerking climax for the album’s theme of change.

The album’s other key guest is local Manchester singer Kesha Ellis, who sings the devastating duets ‘Hurts’ and ‘Last Man Standing’. “I don’t find traditionally ‘great’ singers so interesting. Kesha doesn’t sing much, but the texture and tone in her voice are beautiful.”

While they’re proud of Manchester’s heritage, musically The Slow Show stand apart, influenced more by Sigur Ros than New Order or The Stone Roses. “But seeing how many great bands come from Manchester makes you realise you can make it, and that’s important,” says Goodwin.

The Slow Show: Rob Goodwin (vocals); Fred Kindt (keyboards); Joel Byrne-McCullough (guitar); James Longden (bass); Chris Hough (drums)

VIDEO NEWS: Ceiling Demons release video for ‘Lost The Way’

0

Ceiling Demons are an alternative hip hop group from Yorkshire, they explain their goal simply as ‘Seeking to capture the rawness of human emotion in rhythms and rhymes.’ Currently one album and an EP deep into their career, the band have earned praise from legendary Hip Hop group ‘Arrested Development’, BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson, Scroobius Pip and BBC Introducing as well as shows supporting the likes of Astronautalis, Sleaford Mods & De La Soul. Comprised of identical twin brothers Psy Ceiling and Dan Demon, the always masked Ceiling Demons are dark, experimental and raw, this is perfectly summed up in their contribution to CPWM, ‘Lost The Way’

Discussing the song, the band explain: “There are a few themes in ‘Lost the Way’, nature is one. We live in the Yorkshire Dales so naturally the landscape influences our music. Feelings of loneliness and directionless sometimes come from it, other times it’s a kind of respect for the vastness and beauty of those rolling hills. As ever, though, it’s a song to be interpreted however you like. It’s one of our more positive songs; a little bit of light against the darkness that usually permeates our music, but it’s nice to have a track that calls for a bit of solidarity and progression.”

GIG NEWS: The Travelling Band celebrate 10 year anniversary with tour dates

In April 2015 I rolled the dice and decided to leave Manchester and head to Nashville for the spring. Inspired by the old stories of Dylan, Cash and the ‘Nashville Cats’ as well as today’s (just as feline) alternative scene in the east side of the city, I wanted to break free from the self-imposed confines of Manchester in search of fresh inspiration.

That Blues Brothers saloon bar sketch and general myth about there being two types of music in the south, and particularly Nashville – “Country AND Western” – was far from a complete picture. Much as they had done in the 60s and 70s, artists and bands spanning various genres are flocking again to ‘Music City’ to make records, and many are making it their home. Music is in air and the level of musicianship would be intimidating if the place wasn’t so friendly. It’s a city that feels like a small town and there is a genuine sense of a healthy, collaborative music community.

Amongst a host of legendary venues, I also visited several studios including Sputnik Sound and Welcome to 1979 which both blew my mind and left me drooling at all the vintage gear. Recently established enterprises like Jack White’s multipurpose set up Third Man Records showed me a city that is more than just country music and is at the forefront of modern music in America. It wasn’t just the hot chicken and purpose built studios that got me hooked on the place either. Analogue project studios built into 19th century craftsman houses, where living rooms are live rooms and bathrooms are vocal booths, made me dream of The Travelling Band having our own place to record back at home.

I returned to Manchester with a renewed sense of optimism about the spirit of collaboration in our own music community in Manchester, and beyond. After the near miss of having our van and gear stolen (and then recovered), The Travelling Band had begun writing new music but our recording equipment was located in our carpet covered rehearsal room sweat box, located above a pole dancing studio in the Northern Quarter and felt like hell compared to what I’d just experienced. Chief engineer Adam Gorman was beginning to lose his mind too, so we decided it was time to find a new room! Pinhole Sound Studio was established in the summer of 2015 in Ancoats, Manchester and from this base we have been recording The Travelling Band’s fourth album as well as producing other bands from Manchester and further afield.

Pinhole Sounds Volume One is the first in a series of compilations on Sideways Saloon and marks the celebration of ten years since The Travelling Band’s formation on a whimsical recording project in Brooklyn, NY in the autumn of 2006. The mini compilation includes as yet unheard tracks from bands on the Sideways Saloon roster, as well as one-off gems from other bands and artists we love. Side A opens with ‘Wasted Eyes’ – the first glimpse of The Travelling Band’s forthcoming new album – a self reflection on the reckless behaviour of the troubled protagonist. It features a wild fuzz that any 70s dad and/or Charles Manson follower would be proud of. It’s followed by a live recording of ‘Borrowed and Blue’ (from The Grand in Clitheroe in May 2015) that conjures the sentimental last shreds of now departed guitarist Steve ‘Mugger’ Mullen, in what was his final show for the band. Side B opens with the killer ‘Mustanging’ from Manchester’s Jo Rose & Pit Pony, weaving literary references through scuzzy guitars and feel good riffs and showing that much like Nashville, there is more to Jo Rose than simply country music. Sweden based Barbarisms follow up from their highly rated sophomore album ‘Browser’ with a new dreamy, harmony drenched ear worm ‘The Two Most Boring Things’. Their music was introduced to us by A. Dyjecinski, who closes the EP with what could be the exit music of a yet to be written modern western, with the beautiful ‘The Way of the Buffalo’. I first saw him perform this song a cappella around a campfire at End of the Road festival back in 2009 and from that moment I fell in love with his baritone voice and his ability to write songs that transcend the space between darkness and light. His critically acclaimed 2016 debut LP The Valley of Yessiree is out now on Sideways Saloon.

Close Your Eyes and Count to Ten Videos

To celebrate their tenth anniversary, The Travelling Band are filming a series of ten videos featuring covers of songs that have inspired them in each of the years they have been playing together.

YouTube playlist: http://smarturl.it/ttb10-videos

There are four so far, with more to follow leading up to the EP release…

Part 1 – Naked as we came (Iron & Wine cover)

We’d often this beautiful song around campfires and coffee tables when we first started out. Iron & Wine’s album ‘Our Endless Numbered Days’ was a staple for us and the close harmonies and beautiful fingerpicking certainly inspired our early recordings. Sam Beam is an incredible songwriter. Check out his albums if you haven’t already, including his recent collaboration with Manchester based artist Jesca Hoop.

Part 2 – New Slang (The Shins cover)

This song blew me away when I first heard it. I love the cryptic lyrics and the way he turns a phrase, almost waiting for the last minute to get the words out. It reminds me of sitting in Adam P. Gorman’s flat overlooking the Northern Quarter in 2007, dreaming of getting back to Brooklyn to finish the first album. It was in this period that I wrote ‘Desolate Icicle’ and looking back you can definitely hear the influence of James Mercer on that song.

Part 3 – Glenn Tipton (Sun Kil Moon cover)

Songs can be saviours. It was the summer of 2008 and i’d just left my old ruckus to follow The Travelling Band, split with my girl and then moved back to the city. A couple of years before i remember Adam P. Gorman had leant me the AC/DC covers record and then I got into Sun Kil Moon’s album ‘Ghosts of the Great Highway’. This song opens that album, it’s such a beautiful trail of thought. I remember sitting in my sisters flat learning it and wondering what was next in life. No one does nostalgia quite like Mark Kozelek. Hope we haven’t trashed it…

Part 4 – My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue) – Neil Young cover

Not much hasn’t been said on the impact that Neil Young has had on generations of musicians and music lovers. He is a legend of the road, a giant of songwriting and the godfather of grunge! As a band we have covered entire albums of his (1974’s ‘On the Beach’) and he is possibly the biggest influence on our early music and he continues to inspire us. We all watched his 2009 Glastonbury Festival (official) performance together and it was a really special moment. We hope you enjoy our version of ‘My My, Hey Hey (Out of the blue)’ recorded rough and ready at our studio Pinhole Sound Studio. I think we might do this one on the tour!

VIDEO NEWS: Colour Of Spring release video for new single ‘Snow’

0

Of the video concept Robin explained: “The song Snow is quite a personal one to front man Shane, so I wanted to make the main focus of the video about him. I had the idea of trying to make it like a dream going on in his head. The close-ups of his face are him talking to and rationalising with himself, while the shots of the forest and him falling are meant to symbolise the idea of being lost or unsure of his emotions.

“At the time of filming Shane felt quite self-conscious about the idea but after seeing it was pleased that it portrayed the same feelings visually as he was trying to express musically.”

Here’s Shane (vocals & guitar in Colour Of Spring) talking about the track itself: “‘Snow’ is mainly about inner conflict. About self analysing your short comings and bad habits while wanting to change them for someone you care for. Snow is the experience of knowing somebody who eventually disappears from your life over time.”

You can read more about the single in our news piece.

October Dates:

5th York – The Fulford Arms (supporting Man of Moon
14th Leeds – Brudenell Social Club (supporting INHEAVEN)
15th Manchester – A Carefully Planned Festival

Holmfirth welcomes the return of the UK’s only Brass Brand talent show

0

Established in 2010, the award-winning Brass Factor is a celebration of one of Britain’s most traditional forms of entertainment. Taking on the form of a talent contest, the brass band event will showcase six brass bands, from across Yorkshire, competing for the coveted title of “Brass Factor Winner”.

Performing 18 to 20 minute sets each, the bands will aim to impress a panel of celebrity judges who will decide their preferred musicians on the night.

The only brass band contest of its kind, Brass Factor adds an unusual twist to the judging process, where audiences will also receive the opportunity to vote for their favourites.

Growing up with brass band music and having played the cornet since the young age of 11, Brass Factor creator, Alex Bray founded Brass Factor with the aim of raising public awareness and nurturing young talent.

Since its inception, Brass Factor has raised around £15,000 in support of charities; the 2016 event will help to raise funds in aid of The Town Foundation and Martin House Children’s Hospice.

Commenting on this year’s launch of the Brass Factor, Alex Bray stated:

“I am incredibly excited for the launch of Brass Factor this year and plans are in place for it to be just as fantastic an event as previous years. The support we have gained since 2010 has been phenomenal and if some of this can transferred into promoting brass band culture and young talent, then the event has fulfilled its objectives.”

Alex’s plans for the future of Brass Factor include taking the event nationwide.

Last year’s winners, Besses o’ th’ Barn stole the show with their outstanding choice of music, unique arrangements and all-round entertainment value. Now the search is on to find 2016’s Brass Factor winner.
